Alan Carr’s amazing act of bravery when friend was attacked with knife

Alan Carr was in Morocco with Cleo Rocos when a man brandished a knife at her during a night out – and the comedian didn’t hesitate to step in to protect his friend

The Celebrity Traitors winner Alan Carr once saved his friend’s life when she was attacked during a night out in Morocco.

The comedian, 49, tackled an assailant who was brandishing a ten-inch blade at actress Cleo Rocos, 63, and knocked the weapon out of his hand. The shocking incident happened in the city of Marrakesh, Cleo said, as she explained the man came out of nowhere and told her he wanted to be with her.

Cleo and Alan didn’t think he was being serious – but at some point, he took out a knife, which terrified her. But Cleo recalled that despite the tense moment, Alan managed to remain calm, pulled his friend to the other side and told the man: “Don’t be so rude.”

“Before the man could react, he slapped the knife out of his hand,” she explained. Speaking to The Sun, Cleo said she was “shocked” and after Alan intervened, they walked off at a pace, while still looking behind to ensure the man wasn’t following them.

Cleo, who lives in Brazil where she runs the AquaRiva tequila company, said: “Alan had really knocked the wind out of him – he didn’t punch him or anything but he disarmed him and he was so brave in the way he handled it. That night could have gone terribly wrong, but Alan dealt with the situation so decisively – he literally saved my life.”

She added that once back home, she recounted the story but Alan never mentioned it again. “That’s how humble he is,” Cleo said. “And I suddenly realised that Alan is a really big person. He is much taller than people realise and he is also strong and chivalrous despite his nervous demeanour. He’s a real gentleman, which is so nice, and he’s very protective.”

After winning The Celebrity Traitors, Alan has been tipped as the new host of Strictly Come Dancing, replacing Claudia Winkleman – and there are also rumours that his former long-running Channel 4 series Chatty Man could return. One source told The Mirror: “Alan’s comedy talents were showcased perfectly in the Traitors castle and it’s reminded many people just how funny he is.

“Even people who claimed they didn’t like him before have loved watching him laugh and lie his way through the episodes. It would be no surprise if Chatty Man now got a reboot – not necessarily on Channel 4 – and the Beeb could do way worse than letting Alan loose in the ballroom. He’d be a hoot.”

Viewers saw Alan burst into tears as he won the £87,500 prize on The Celebrity Traitors, as he told Faithfuls Nick Mohammed and David Olusoga: “I’m so sorry, it’s been tearing me apart.” Speaking afterwards, the comic said he couldn’t help the outpouring of emotion at the very end.

“I think all the deceit, the lying, the murdering of Paloma and Celia had all taken its toll and then I think it dawned on me that I had won such a huge amount for my charity, Neuroblastoma UK,” he explained. “Hopefully when people see how upset I was they won’t feel so bad that I killed all those national treasures.”

Strictly’s Lewis Cope backs Traitors star to replace Claudia Winkleman and Tess Daly

EXCLUSIVE: Strictly Come Dancing star Lewis Cope has opened up about his time on the show and who he would like to see replace Claudia Winkleman and Tess Daly as host

Strictly Come Dancing star Lewis Cope wouldn’t mind seeing Alan Carr take over the Strictly Come Dancing ballroom reins.

With Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman stepping away, speculation over their replacements is already swirling with Alan reportedly holding the top spot after his Traitors victory. “I think Alan would be brilliant,” Lewis says. “He’s funny, people love him, and he’s really current. Why not? He’d be hilarious with the judges – he’d probably go, ‘I don’t know what you’re talking about, but you were brilliant!’”

His partner Katya Jones smiles but has her own view. “Alan would be great fun, but I think Jeannette Manrara would make an amazing host. She knows the dancing, she knows what we go through. She’d bring real heart.”

Away from host talk, Lewis, who is one out of 13 siblings, is still adjusting to life under the glitterball – and his girlfriend, Call the Midwife actor Rachel Maya Lopez, has been cheering him on. “She’s absolutely loving it,” he says. “She’s bursting with pride. I show her rehearsal videos and she’s the best confidence booster. Even when I think we’re struggling, she’ll say, ‘I love this – it’s your best one yet!’”

He laughs when asked if they practise together at home. “No – I’m quite regimented. I like rehearsing in the same space, keeping things structured. I don’t want to confuse my brain!”

Critics might point to his past – Lewis trained in dance years ago before focusing on acting – but he’s quick to clarify. “It was a long time ago and only for a couple of years. I’ve been an actor for 12 years. You can’t fake what we do out there – I’m drenched in sweat every day trying to keep up with the pros.”

Katya nods. “People think he’s had it easy, but he’s working harder than anyone. It’s not a given – it’s earned. Compared to my previous partners, this isn’t easier or quicker. If anything, it’s more challenging because I can ask more of him.”

After scoring a perfect 40 last week, the pair are determined to stay grounded. “We never try to top it,” Lewis says. “From the start we’ve focused on working as hard as we can each week. What happens at the weekend happens – then we move on. Every dance is new.”

Still, for all the physical intensity, Katya says the show is as much mental as muscular. “You need stamina in your body, but even more in your head,” she says. “Every week you’re resetting – new choreography, new story, new pressure. That’s why having someone like Lewis who can stay positive makes such a difference.”

The physical demands don’t get easier with time. “As the years go on, you feel it more,” Katya admits. “Viewers are more educated now – they know what to look for, and the standard’s higher.”

“I once popped into Boots and someone said, ‘Aren’t you meant to be rehearsing? I need a good show tonight!’ You really feel that responsibility.”

Every week brings a new challenge for the pair and as they have performed the Cha Cha to Pete Rodriguez’s I like it Like That, Lewis found it tricky. “You’re learning a new way of moving every time,” Lewis says.

“This week it was about transferring weight – that was tricky.” Katya adds, “He’s an incredible student. Even when we hit a low midweek, he’ll watch the videos, critique himself, and come back the next morning ready to go. His resilience is amazing.”

He smiles. “We just want to entertain people – that’s what the show’s about. If we can give people joy on a Saturday night, that’s a win.”

Speaking to The Sun, the source said: “Her signature charm and infectious humour will go down a storm. She’ll only be away a week so This Morning won’t miss her too much.”

And Alison has previously been honest about her initial experience. She admitted she didn’t enjoy being part of the show due to her late entry.

“I went in like, halfway through,” she said. “So everyone had established relationships and I just really didn’t enjoy myself at all.”

Maybe if I went in now and went in from the beginning and bonded with everyone. Basically everyone was bonded and I was like, oh God I don’t really like it here.”

She added: “There was no hot water, I went into the creek and washed in cold water.”

While Alison is now expected to be a part of the sister show and let her feelings be known, this year’s campmates were reportedly announced this week.

Joe Marler breaks silence after ‘heartbreaking’ Celebrity Traitors loss

Joe Marler said he felt ‘heartbroken’ as his friend Nick Mohammed turned on him during the Celebrity Traitors finale and voted to banish him instead of Traitor Alan Carr

Joe Marler has broken his silence after being banished from Celebrity Traitors at the last minute – and admitted he felt “heartbroken” when he was eliminated.

The former rugby union player, 35, correctly guessed that comedian Alan Carr, 49, and singer Cat Burns, 25, were the remaining Traitors – and thought that his friend Nick Mohammed, 45, would support him in voting both of them out. Even though Cat was eventually eliminated, the nail-biting finale took an unexpected turn when Nick actually started believing that Joe was a Traitor too as he told the singer “I’m sorry” after voting for her to be banished.

This meant that Nick eventually voted to eliminate Joe instead of Alan – and the actor was shocked to find out, alongside filmmaker David Olusoga, that the comedian had been a Traitor from the very beginning of the show. Joe has now spoken out following he finale, which at its peak was seen by 12 million people, according to the BBC.

He told BBC One’s Saturday Kitchen: “I was also expecting to win. I thought me and Nick, really, we’d nailed this one. I was heartbroken. He didn’t stick to my plan.

“He went with his gut, which is a shame, but I still was so in love with him, because that little like dickie bow, his little face, the three little love hearts, he put on my name [on the blackboard after voting for him].”

However, Joe admitted: “Although in that moment, I was heartbroken.” But he added: “I really enjoyed Nick. He’s fantastic.” Joe also described Alan as “unbelievable” after the comedian won the entire prize pot of £87,500, which he has donated to the children’s cancer charity Neuroblastoma UK.

After this week’s finale, Joe announced he is returning to podcasting with his new show, Joe Marler Will See You Now, which will see the former Harlequins forward “reimagined as an entirely unqualified yet oddly persuasive pseudo-psychologist” who will grill celebrity guests with a series of increasingly probing questions and bespoke personality tests.

The podcast – which will launch on Thursday, November 13, and will be available to listen to on BBC Sounds – is produced by Folding Pocket, the same label that produces The Celebrity Traitors: Uncloaked. Joe also shared a post on Instagram about his new show just minutes after the Celebrity Traitors finale ended.

“I am really excited to be launching a new podcast with a twist! Think Good Will Hunting meets The Goonies,” said Joe as his new project was announced. “I’ve always loved asking questions and learning new things.

“This new show lets me do it in the most surreal, unpredictable way. I can’t wait for people to see just how ridiculous, and surprisingly revealing, it’s going to be.”

In a funny TikTok video announcing the show, Joe also took a swipe at Nick as he filmed himself receiving a call from the actor. But after looking at his phone, he said: “Nick Mohammed? Nah,” before throwing his phone to the side. The logo of his new show then flashed up on the screen.
