Hundreds of thousands of festivalgoers have pitched up at Reading Festival for a weekend of headliner acts from Travis Scott to Chappell Roan. While they’re set to attract huge crowds, there was a time when one noughties pop band sparked fury among fans, resulting in bottles and a wheelchair being thrown at them while performing at the notorious festival.

Daphne and Celeste, an American pop duo consisting of Celeste Cruz and Karen ‘Daphne’ DiConcetto, shot to fame with their debut single, ‘Ooh Stick You!’ in 2000. They later released their track ‘U.G.L.Y.’, which notoriously featured in the popular cheerleader movie ‘Bring It On’.

They found a huge fan base in the UK, and three of their tracks reached the top 20 in the UK singles chart. And so, they bagged themselves a slot to play at Reading Festival in August 2000. However, it didn’t quite go to plan.

As the duo took to the stage, they were immediately hit with bottles of water, toilet paper, bottles of urine, and a bag of meat. Their controversial appearance also saw a wheelchair sensationally thrown at them.

But despite the crowd backlash, they managed to hold their own and even mocked the crowd. “You guys are such a good crowd,’ Celeste voiced at the time, while Daphne added, ‘I’m loving the signs. ‘Die!’ Yes, I will!’

For their safety, they only performed two of their three planned songs before swiftly leaving the stage. Karen later revealed: “Backstage, Slipknot and Rage Against the Machine were coming up to us and telling us how hardcore we were – how they wouldn’t have stayed out there.”

Fans had been outraged that the Reading Festival organisers had scheduled a pop band, also known as “bubble gum artists” at the time, rather than alternative artists that the event was famously known for. Others believed that their song ‘U.G.L.Y.’ promoted bullying.

The duo reflected back on their time at the festival in 2015, revealing that Celeste’s mother got hit during the outburst, and that it took three people to throw the wheelchair onto the stage.

“Because, of course, we invited our families along, not thinking at all how it would be for them! When we came off, my sister was crying!” Karen told The Guardian. In reference to the wheelchair that was thrown, she added, “Someone lost their mobility because they hated us so much!”

In 2015, three years after they had last performed together, the duo made a comeback and released their song ‘You And I Alone’. This followed their track ‘BB’ and a second album titled ‘Daphne & Celeste Save the World’, but neither found success as their first hits in 2000.

They have since stepped away from the spotlight. Karen, now 44, is married with a son and is said to be a screenwriter and a television producer. Meanwhile, Celeste, now 41, is reportedly still performing in a handful of small acting gigs and has a son with her husband.

He included a steamy pose on the dancefloor, as well as a selfie in the back of a car and snaps from multiple night outs together. Alongside the post, Pete gushed: “It was never about dancing…it was about the person.

“Happy birthday @jowitaprzystal – I am so blessed and grateful to have you in my life. My pocket rocket.” He added a black love heart emoji to the post, which sent fans wild.

Last month, Pete revealed just how much Jowita means to him as he shared how their relationship is still blossoming off the show. “A lot of that [making it to the semi-finals] if I’m totally honest, is down to Jowita,” he said.

“She was the best partner I could have had… she’s become one of the most important in my life. She’s one of my best mates, and I adore her. She had to put up with me, she dragged me through it, because it certainly wasn’t the dancing.”

“I didn’t take myself too seriously but I took the show really seriously, and I took the process really seriously, I took the learning really seriously,” he told Mail Online. “I didn’t really enjoy learning things, and that was my favourite part of the whole thing.”

Following his exit from Strictly, Pete poured his heart out on social media as he wrote: “This experience wouldn’t have been anything without Jowita. She believed in me since the first day and never stopped.

“She supported me, listened to me, made me laugh and cry but most of all she made me believe in myself when I didn’t think I could do it.

“We did everything our way, and for me that was the right way. I’m so sorry that I couldn’t get you to a final, I tried my best and you deserve to be there. The show may have ended for us but one thing won’t, you will always have a friend in me.”

Black Mirror’s Charlie Brooker makes chilling cinema prediction over ‘worrying’ AI

Charlie Brooker, who created the smash-hit Netflix series The Black Mirror, has shared his thoughts on the future of artificial intelligence as its use increases

(Image: James Gillham/REX/Shutterstock)

Screenwriter and TV host Charlie Brooker believes cinema fans will one day be able to appear in the movies they watch as part of the ticket price thanks to AI.

The Black Mirror creator is known for his dark stories on screen which sometimes predict the future.

Speaking at the Edinburgh TV Festival he said fans may become part of films and you may also be able to choose new lead stars in old classic films, with Charlie amusingly offering up the idea of “Lorraine Kelly in Die Hard”.

Asked about AI in the TV industry, possibly even providing scripts or things to watch on screen, Charlie said: “I have to believe that people want audiences, want humans communicating with them, not just the machine. So I kind of have to believe that you’re always going to want the messy human in the mix. I can see sort of the value as maybe as an analytical tool.

“A much cleverer a writer than me said to me the execs will take our script, feed them into AI sit down and watch a video, a rough video preview of it. I could sort of see that felt plausible to me, so that basically the script becomes a prompt, and then you get notes on that which worries me, I hope we will be keeping keyboards warm with flesh.”

Going onto discuss film and cinema, he added: “I had an idea once, which I think is now close to possible, say there’s 200 people going to a cinema. You go in and on the way it scans up your face, and then you sit down, you watch the film, and it’s cast the film randomly, with the members of the actual audience there. And you can do this with old films.

“So imagine if you went to see Raiders Of The Lost Ark and you don’t know if you’re going to be the Indiana Jones or a Nazi.

“I can imagine a lot of AI generated imaging kind of remix of two things so you can be like ‘ok I want to watch Die Hard with Lorraine Kelly.”

Charlie said he has recently tried to use Chat GPT to help him with a computer game but all the advice had been wrong and he has “wasted an hour”. Charlie also teased an upcoming announcement about a new and “very different” project which he expects to announce in the next few days.

He spoke about how understanding Netflix had been about him satirising subscription models in Black Mirror episode Common People, starring Rashida Jones.

“I would love to say that I stormed into a boardroom and went: ‘This must happen.’ No, they’ve been very up for that sort of thing,” he said.

Brooker said he was fortunate in being able to cast actors, including Paul Giamatti, in the anthology drama, but said he still regularly writes “begging letters” to try to land other big names. He added that most consider Black Mirror a fun gig. “It’s exciting because you’re not bored, and you don’t have familiarity breeding contempt,” he said.
