Primark shoppers outraged as they’re told they’re pronouncing shop name wrong

Some Primark shoppers are only just realising the ‘ correct ‘ way to say the shop’s store name – however some people aren’t very happy about the revelation after it emerged

Shoppers have been left scratching their heads after discovering a surprising truth about Primark. It’s strange to start pronouncing something differently when you’ve been saying it a certain way for so long. Manu were taken aback when the budget clothingchain announced that its name is pronounced differently than most people have been saying it for years.

The correct pronunciation of the fashion retailer’s name is often a contentious issue, but Primark bosses have confirmed that the brand name should be pronounced ‘Preemark’. The original Penneys brand, which originated in Ireland, is known as Primark to the rest of the world. However, a branch located in Braehead shopping centre, Glasgow, has now put up their own sign to settle the debate.

Some shoppers were left incensed by the window display, erected on 21 August, which declares: “It’s pronounced Preemark”.

The display also shows the shop’s name with the ‘ Pri ‘ crossed out and replaced with ‘ Pree’.

Despite claiming that the ‘ debate is settled’, the store’s actions have ignited anger across the UK – with many customers left seething. Shoppers didn’t hold back while expressing their views on the debate.

Emma Tonks stated: “Absolutely not, I used to work there and it was always Primark”.

Ellie commented: “Anyone that says Preemark can’t speak properly. It’s Pri-mark, the way it’s actually spelt”.

Susie remarked: “Preemark is how it’s pronounced properly in Scotland.” One added: “If it’s spelled Preemark then yes, if it’s spelled Primark then no.”

Another said: “Hell yes. Of course it’s Preemark. There’s archive radio adverts when it opened in the 70s for Preemark”.

However, there’s a specific reason behind this move and it won’t impact all of its outlets. The rebrand applies solely to the 21 branches in Scotland.

It’s being done to celebrate the company’s 50-year milestone north of the border.

Gavin O’Reilly, Area Manager for Primark Scotland West and Cumbria, who currently manages Primark’s inaugural store in Hamilton, Scotland, said: “Our loyal Scottish shoppers have been instrumental to our success over the last 50 years.

” So we thought it was high time we acknowledged it in true Primark style. It’s a proud moment for all our stores to be celebrating our milestone together with a fun ‘ Preemark ‘ nod.

Where is Jussie Smollett now six years after hate crime hoax scandal?

Jussie Smollett was taken to trial in 2019 for allegedly filing a false police report after the actor claimed he suffered a racial and homophobic attack in Chicago

Over than six years after Jussie Smollett claimed he was the victim of a racist and homophobic attack in Chicago, the former Empire star is working to rebuild his career in television, film, and music. After years of fallout from his high-profile 2019 arrest, the 42-year-old actor and singer is re-emerging with several new ventures that mark his most ambitious comeback yet.

Smollett, who is the subject of a new Netflix documentary, was once best known for his breakout role as Jamal Lyon on the Fox drama. He is now more widely recognised for his 2019 scandal that divided public opinion and led to years of courtroom battles.

The actorm 43, first appeared on screen as a child actor in The Mighty Ducks. He then became more widely known for starring in the smash-hit series Empire alongside Terrence Howard and Taraji P. Henson.

The actor reported being attacked as a hate crime but was later taken to court for allegedly filing a false police report

But in January 2019, his career was derailed when he told police he had been brutally attacked in Chicago’s Streeterville neighbourhood. The actor, who is Black and openly gay, alleged that two men yelled slurs at him, doused him with an unknown substance and tied a noose around his neck in a sickening, racist attack.

Initially, Smollett received an outpouring of support. His family released a statement insisting, “Jussie was the victim of a violent and unprovoked attack. We want to be clear, this was a racial and homophobic hate crime. Jussie has told the police everything from the very beginning. His story has never changed, and we are hopeful they will find these men and bring them to justice.”

But police became suspicious as they investigated the incident as Jussie claimed the assailants were white. After questioning brothers Ola and Bola Osundairo, who worked as extras on the set of Empire, law enforcement was told that Smollett had paid them to stage the incident.

Smollett was arrested in February 2019 and charged with disorderly conduct for filing a false police report. Though the Cook County State’s Attorney initially dropped the charges in March 2019, citing his community service and bond forfeiture, a special prosecutor later re-indicted him.

After a highly publicised trial, Smollett was convicted in 2021 on five felony counts of disorderly conduct and sentenced to 30 months of probation, including 150 days in jail. He served just six days before being released pending appeal.

In 2024 the Illinois Supreme Court overturned his conviction, ruling that he had already fulfilled a plea agreement made years earlier. The following year Smollett and the city of Chicago reached a settlement, bringing the long-running legal battle to a close.

Despite his legal troubles, Smollett has managed to keep building his career. In August 2025 Netflix released a documentary featuring interviews with Smollett, police officers, lawyers, journalists and the Osundairo brothers called The Truth About Jussie Smollett.

In the special, Smollett once again defended himself, stating: “My story has never changed. My story has remained intact. At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter whether someone likes me or doesn’t like me… The fact is, I didn’t do that. And that’s all that matters.”

Beyond the Netflix documentary that revisited his alleged hoax hate crime, Smollett is now set to return to FOX for the first time since his dismissal from Empire.

He will appear as a contestant on season four of the reality series Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test, competing against fellow celebrities including Teresa Giudice, Johnny Manziel, Shawn Johnson East, Kody Brown, and Brittany Cartwright. The series is set to premiere on September 25, 2025.

Smollett is also shining a spotlight on his new music. He recently released his single Break Out, which has received a warm response from fans who praised his vocals and expressed excitement for his next project.

“He’s still a very good singer and an artist,” one supporter commented, while another described his return as “everything” they had been waiting for.

Smollett has also returned to the big screen with The Lost Holiday, the first film he has ever directed, starring Vivica A. Fox and Jabari Redd. The family drama, which received a big screening at the 2024 S.O.U.L Fest Film Festival x ABFF Global London at the BFI, explores themes of grief and acceptance.

The actor spoke about the personal experiences that inspired the film to Alt A Review, admitting: “It’s been almost a decade that my father passed away, the very same day that Empire ever aired on television. And so when the world kind of got to know me, I was dealing with this certain level of grief that I didn’t really know what to do with.

“I felt guilty for being so sad, but I couldn’t do anything about it. So I really tried to start channelling that into something. And somehow this story came up.”

Away from the cameras, Smollett has reportedly been focusing on his wellbeing. The actor checked himself into rehab in 2023. In June 2025, he shared the exciting news of his engagement to New York actor and producer Jabari Redd.

Coldplay Wembley review: Music is intoxicating but new kisscam moment floors everyone

Associate Editor Tom Bryant is at Wembley Stadium for the first night of ten at the venue – and witnesses an “intoxicating show….that is a feast for the senses”

Coldplay kicked off the first of 10 sold-out nights at Wembley – with a cheeky nod to the “kiss cam” moment in the US which went viral. Chris Martin spotted a man in the 80,000-strong crowd on Friday night with a sign saying he wanted to propose to his partner.

As the camera panned in on him, and the woman, Chris joked: “Now listen my brother I need you to nod as I do some very basic security checks ok? Is this person your partner, yes? Noone else’s partner?”

The joke was in reference to his July 16 concert in Boston where Coldplay’s kiss cam appeared to expose an extra-marital affair. The camera had panned to Andy Byron, then CEO of New York tech firm Astronomer, and his colleague Kristin Cabot, the company’s Chief People Officer. “Either they’re having an affair or they’re just really shy,” Chris said at the time. They both quit their roles.

There was no such kisscam drama this time around. But the scenes playing out at Wembley were just as intoxicating.

Fans were treated to a spectacular show that was a feast for the senses. A sea of LED wristbands lit up the famous arches as part of a light-show in perfect sync with the music. The dazzling visuals went hand in hand with a scintillating set list that included Clocks, Viva La Vida and Paradise.

But there were also stripped-down songs without the pyrotechnics. Introducing Don’t Panic, Chris said: “This is how we used to play in (guitarist) Jonny’s bedroom in Camden around his s***** sofa and we would stop to watch Neighbours, and The Fast Show and things like that.”

And a rare outing of Trouble – from the same debut album – saw Chris pluck an autistic boy from the audience who sat next to him on the piano. It was highly stirring stuff.
