Ian Watkins’ sick life in jail with groupie visits, daily attacks and killing just a ‘matter of time’

Disgraced Lostprophets frontman lived in constant fear during his time in the ‘Monster Mansion’ with daily attacks and abuse. But he also somehow kept a loyal fan base of young women who would visit the sick paedophile

From the moment he walked into his cell in HMP Wakefield, vile sex offender Ian Watkins was a target.

It’s an unwritten rule that lags don’t ask other inmates what they did to find themselves in the UK’s largest highest security prison – chillingly known as Monster Mansion. But the disgraced Lostprophets frontman couldn’t hide from his fame – everyone knew the depths of his depravity.

In 2013, the Welsh singer was jailed for 29 years for 13 horrific sex offences, including the attempted rape and sexual assault of children under the age of 13. One of the infants was just 10 months old.

The “determined” sex offender had a collection of child abuse photos and films almost five times the size of the police force that arrested him. A total of 27 terabytes of data storage from computers and devices found in Watkins’ possession. His heinous online library was encrypted, and the sick pervert used a reference to child abuse as his password.

Still, a former Wakefield inmate says Watkins never showed any remorse and remained a ‘self centred loner’ before he was killed in prison last weekend. Insiders say that after being locked up, his weight yo-yoed and hair dye from the prison shop was the only thing keeping his thinning hair jet black.

Yet somehow, the proud paedo kept a deluded fan base of young women during his time inside – he was reportedly even allowed regular visits from three ‘goth groupies’ and was spotted holding hands and giggling with his visitors. A sickened onlooker claimed they once saw him kissing one fan.

In his cell, he hoarded 600 pages of letters from different women – some including sexual fantasies. It’s difficult to comprehend what would drive anyone to stick by a dangerous and prolific paedophile. But at his trial, the court heard that Watkins was a master manipulator and used his frenzied fan base of young women to gain access to children, including babies.

A source told the Daily Mail: “He got a lot of correspondence [in jail], mainly from women, with some asking him to marry them. It was beyond comprehension, given his horrendous crimes.”

But Watkins’ female admirers would do little to ease his miserable life inside – the rocker’s fame, horrendous crimes and attention from women made him even more of a target and he is said to have lived in constant fear of the repercussions.

“Watkins was effectively a dead man walking from the moment he arrived in Wakefield,” an ex-prisoner told the publication. “He had been attacked before and was abused every day. He was a loner, self-centred and remorseless. He had no real friends and spent a lot of time on his own in his room.”

Meanwhile, speaking to The Mirror, ex-prison officer Tony Cottenden said of paedophiles in prison: “They’re usually supervised if they’re alongside a normal population, or if they need to go somewhere they’re usually taken there by an officer.

“Some prisons have separate movement, so usually most offenders move around the prison on something known as free flow, and on the way to work these offenders will move at separate times at certain prisons.

“…So yeah, it’s not a very pleasant experience for them. [It’s] very limited. Everything is separate. You’re usually just on the landing full of other vulnerable prisoners, whether that be paedophiles or people that are on active documents, which is like your classic case of suicide watch, etc. People who can’t cope with the prison environment.”

In 2019, Watkins has another 10 months added to his sentence for possessing a mobile phone in jail, which he used to contact a woman he was previously in a relationship with. The subsequent court case revealed grim details of his time inside.

Watkins used the phone to contact his former girlfriend, who first met him when she was 19. They had been in a relationship but she cut contact in 2012. Despite being aware of his crimes, she started speaking to him again in 2016 through letters, phone calls and legitimate prison emails.

Then, in March 2018, her phone pinged with a text from an unknown number which read: “Hi Gabriella-ella,-ella-eh-eh-eh”. The woman told the court that it was a nod to the Rihanna song Umbrella – a reference that Watkins had made before. When she asked who was messaging her, she got the response: “It’s the devil on your shoulder”. The next text read “I’m trusting you massively with this” and she knew immediately who it was.

The woman spoke to the sex offender on the phone to make sure it was him then reported him to the prison authorities. The numbers of seven women linked to Watkins were found on the phone. The paedo claimed he had been acting under duress and that two other prisoners had made him look after the device, in order to ‘hook them up’ with his admirers and use them as a ‘revenue stream’.

Watkins, keenly aware of the danger he was in every day in prison, refused to name the inmates saying they were ‘murderers and handy’. He said: “You would not want to mess with them. I like my head on my body.”

Speaking about possible repercussions following his case, Watkins accurately predicted his own grim fate. “Chances are someone would sneak up behind me and cut my throat. It’s not like one-on-one. Stuff like that, you don’t see it coming.”

In 2023, Watkins was brutally attacked by three other inmates and nearly died as a result of his injuries. Watkins was rescued by a specially trained squad of riot officers who chucked stun grenades into the cell to free him. “He was screaming and was obviously terrified and in fear of his life,” a source said. He needed life-saving treatment in hospital.

Despite having the money to buy protection inside, Watkins was abused every day in jail and eventually met a gruesome fate. The disgraced singer was killed in prison on Saturday and two inmates have been charged with his murder.

Few if any of his fellow lags will mourn his passing. The partner of one serving prisoner told the Daily Mail: “He said that there was cheering when word spread that Watkins had been killed.

Alison Hammond asks ‘would you rather I die’ as she addresses 13.5st weight loss

This Morning’s Alison Hammond has revealed how her staggering weight loss journey that has seen her shed 13.5 stone has been marred by a topic that “keeps getting brought up”

Alison Hammond has posed a heartbreaking question to anyone who questions specific methods for losing weight. Alison, best known for her appearances on ITV’s This Morning and The Great British Bake Off, has detailed how her staggering 13 and a half stone weight loss journey has been marred by a modern diet trend that “keeps getting brought up”.

Once weighing in at 30 stone, the TV star has cut her weight to approximately 16 and a half stone. Alison previously revealed that she set out on a path towards a healthier lifestyle after a worrying pre-diabetic health assessment.

Enlisting the help of a fitness expert, Alison says she achieved the feat without the need for restrictive diets. Instead, she doesn’t “deny” herself anything and told Heat magazine that she focused on eating in “moderation”.

Despite this it seems Alison’s hard work has been subject to “persistent questions” by those who want to know whether she’s used weight loss jabs.

She reportedly told the Daily Mail’s Richard Eden at the Women of the Year awards: “It worries me that the jab keeps getting brought up. Every single time I have a conversation in public, that is the question thrown at me.”

Alison was asked if she’d used such in vogue methods, but she responded with a resolute “absolutely not”. She added that she’s “not a follower” of other people’s actions and only does what she needs to do for herself.

Despite this, Alison hasn’t ruled out using these types of medication. Indeed, she even weighed in on the apparent stigma associated with using weight-loss jabs and gave her defiant assessment.

She said: “I don’t like the fact that you have to say: ‘Oh, no, I wouldn’t have the jab ever’. Maybe next year. Do you know what? I might start jabbing up. What does it matter how people lose weight.”

Finally, in a poignant question, Alison cut through the logic of any potential critics: “Would you rather me die from being obese?”

It appears that Alison’s weight loss isn’t solely down to her diet, however, as she’s also shared that she has a personal trainer and goes for walks when she can’t train.

Speaking previously about her diet, she explained: “I just try and live healthily and drink lots of water, and the weight loss will come. If I lose one or two stone, it’s not going to be obvious to anybody, but I’ll feel better in myself.”

Alison’s fans have showered her with praise for her new look on social media. One said: “Wow did not even recognise you Alison you look fantastic.”

Another added: “You look amazing and love watching you on TV, such a breath of fresh air.”

In terms of approaching a diet for obesity, the NHS says most people are advised to reduce their energy intake by 600 calories per day. In this manner, a safe and sustainable weight loss of 0.5 to 1kg a week can be achieved.

It means that for most men, they should consume no more than 1,900 calories a day. For most women, this should be no more than 1,400 calories.

Celebrity Traitors’ Clare Balding says ‘I was lucky’ after devastating health battle

Clare Balding was diagnosed with thyroid cancer after spotting a lump on her throat while she was presenting on television

Clare Balding has admitted she was “lucky” after opening up about a devastating health diagnosis. The 54-year-old revealed she discovered a “large lump” on her throat back in December 2008.

The presenter noticed the lump whilst watching herself on television. A visit to her family GP revealed Clare had thyroid cancer and would need surgery.

She went on to have three operations and underwent a round of radioactive iodine therapy, reports Wales Online. Clare had a cyst, her thyroid gland and a lymph node removed.

The Celebrity Traitors star says she experienced a “dark stage” following the diagnosis as she worried about the impact it might have on her career. According to the NHS, thyroid cancer can cause difficulty swallowing and a hoarse throat if left untreated.

However, Clare was given the all-clear in 2010 and has seen her career flourish ever since. Speaking to Yours magazine, she has now disclosed she felt “lucky” to have recovered following the health battle.

She said: “In December 2008, I noticed a large lump on my throat. The tests revealed thyroid cancer. I was lucky.

“Three operations and a round of radioactive iodine therapy and it was gone. The upside was that it made me more determined than ever to grab every opportunity with both hands to live life to the full.”

Clare, who lives with wife Alice Arnold, previously spoke about her diagnosis on the Stick to Rugby podcast.

She explained: “It was an odd one because I hadn’t noticed feeling any different.

“I was doing the show jumping at Christmas when it was at Olympia and I recorded an opening link, and I was watching it back on the monitor as we were about to go live.

“I was looking at the mirror and I saw this lump on my neck, a big lump. I thought, ‘Wow, that’s really weird, where has that come from?’ I went home for Christmas and my sister-in-law’s Welsh grandfather was a doctor, and he looked at it. He was still a practising GP and he said that I’d better go to the doctor. He took Alice to one side and said, ‘Make sure she goes’.

“Between Christmas and New Year, when the doctor’s surgery was open, I went and the GP did some tests and he sent me to a specialist. They came back and said, ‘You’ve got thyroid cancer’ and they had to operate.”

Clare revealed she was left with a “cracking scar” but was initially concerned that surgeons might damage her vocal cords.

She continued: “I came back and was commentating on the tennis for the radio and I couldn’t hit the notes, the vocal cords weren’t meeting properly.

How Alison Hammond lost 13 stone as she opens up on weight loss jabs claims

Alison Hammond has opened up on her huge 13 stone weight loss, as she says she has ‘absolutely not’ used weight loss jabs, but wouldn’t rule them out in the future

This Morning TV presenter Alison Hammond has opened up on her huge 13 stone weight loss, as she revealed that she has ‘absolutely not’ used weight loss drugs to assist her. The Great British Bake Off star has been asked many questions about if she’s used any weight loss jabs during her journey.

Alison, 50, recently opened up and said she was ‘worried’ about how much the jabs get brought up and that the conversation is ‘thrown’ at her whenever she has a conversation in public.

Alison said: “It worries me that the jab keeps getting brought up. Every single time I have a conversation in public, that is the question thrown at me.”

After being asked if she had used any of the weight loss drugs, the TV star said: “‘Absolutely not. I’m not a follower of what people do. I do what I need to do for me.”

Alison reached 30 stone when she was at her heaviest, but after the weight loss, she now weighs around 16 and a half stone. While she denied any use of the drugs so far, she explained how she wouldn’t close the door on that option in the future.

Alison added to the Daily Mail.: “I don’t like the fact that you have to say, ‘Oh, no, I wouldn’t have the jab ever’. Maybe next year. Do you know what? I might start jabbing up. What does it matter how people lose weight? Would you rather have me die from being obese?”

Alsion reportedly made the change to her lifestyle and started to lose weight after the death of her mother, Maria, in 2020, who had been worried about Alison’s diagnosis of prediabetes.

Just last month, Alison opened up on her impressive weight loss and explained how she managed the feat without dieting and simply chose to focus on “moderation” when it comes to food.

She opted to work with a personal trainer following the diagnosis, as she told Heat: “I’ve got a personal trainer – she’s amazing, she trains me when I can train. If I’m working, I don’t train, I’ll go for a walk. But when I’m at home, I’ll go and have a session with her in the morning, just an hour. It might be four days a week.”

She also said she chose to focus on “moderation” when it comes to food rather than cutting things out entirely. “I don’t deny myself anything, I eat everything, but in moderation,” she went on.

It follows after it was also revealed that Alison’s relationship with her 28-year-old boyfriend David Putman has her feeling “on top of the world.”

A source told The Mirror last month: “Alison is literally on top of the world at the moment – she just could not be happier. She’s been grinning from ear to ear recently and David is a huge reason for that.”

Cliff Richard’s incredible journey from emotional teen to ‘thirst trap’

Exclusive:

Birthday boy Sir Cliff as you’ve rarely seen him. As The Saviour’s Day star turns 85, the Mirror digs deep into our exclusive photo archive – and discovers star was more daring than we ever realised…..

He is the legendary entertainer who has sold almost 300million records worldwide, landed 14 No.1s in the UK and is the only star to reach top five in the album charts in eight different decades.

He became the first British musician to be knighted back in 1995, has two Ivor Novello awards and three Brit Awards, and has been wowing fans on stage and screen since 1958.

Now as he turns 85 today, Sir Cliff Richard certainly has a lot to celebrate – starting with his latest tour, which kicks off its UK leg in Cardiff next month.

To mark the star’s big day, The Mirror has launched a new book, Cliff at 85, which shares some of the best, most candid and rarely-seen photos of the man himself – all taken by our army of photographers throughout his career.

Here in an exclusive, we bring you some of the favourite shots – charting his life from his time as the young Harry Webb, born in India to a British dad who worked on the railways, through his movie star era with Summer Holiday and his Christian preacher years to the octogenarian we know today, who led the Platinum Jubilee Parade for the beloved late Queen Elizabeth II.

Sir Cliff was just seven when his family spent weeks on a steamliner moving back to the UK. Yet it was not that journey but one night, aged 15, which would have the biggest impact on his life. He was playing Ratty in a school production of Toad of Toad Hall, and had reluctantly agreed to sing his first ever solo. He was nervous – but on opening night, he was left shocked by how much he enjoyed it.

That was the moment his passion for performing was born.

Just three years later he was playing his first gigs with The Shadows, a year after that he had his first number one with Livin’ Doll, and by 1960 he was a bonafide British superstar, causing controversy with his “too sexy” hip–shaking dance moves – just like his idol Elvis Presley.

“If people say I’m too sexy in my singing, that’s it – I can’t help it,” The Summer Holiday star once told Michael Parkinson. “I do exactly what the songs tell me inside I gotta do.”
