One of the BBC’s longest-serving newsreaders, George Alagiah, passed away at the age of 67 after receiving a bowel cancer diagnosis in July of this year.

Late BBC newsreader George Alagiah left a small sum of money for his wife and family in his will when he died aged 67. The broadcaster’s family received £49,000 from the star after he passed away on the 24 July, 2023 after a decade long battle with bowel cancer.

George had $49, 387 in his name at the time of his passing, according to the former News at Six presenter’s will. The will stipulated that Frances Alagiah, his widow, would be the sole executrix of the estate. Adam and Matthew, the couple’s sons, were born after 39 years of marriage.

He earned between £335,000 and £399,999, according to the BBC. The corporation released the salaries of its highest paid stars and these figures were published just a fortnight before his death. The will stated that if his wife were to pass before him, his sister Miriam Christine Denington to be guardian of his children, as reported by Needs To Know.

Then, George added his four sisters and sister-in-law to his estates, giving them five equal shares. Additionally, the former journalist and presenter requested cremation of his body.

I appoint my wife Frances Alagiah to be the sole executrix of my will, but I appoint my sister-in-law Helen Robathan and my sister Miriam Christine Denington as my alternate executors and Trustees of my will if she passes away in my lifetime or before renunciating my will, or if she is unable or unwilling for whatever reason to do so, I appoint her as my trustees.

My trustees shall be entitled to make investments as freely as they would be in the best interests of my trustees. My trustees are authorized to pay premiums on income or capital to insure any asset of my estate at the terms that they deem appropriate.

“To use any insurance proceeds received to restore the asset, or if it is not practicable to do so as if it were the sale proceeds.”

My trustees may use my estate’s income or capital to pay for the maintenance or improvement of my own or my leasehold property.

“My trustees shall be able to appoint a professional person or trust corporation at such terms and remuneration as may be agreed in addition to the statutory power of appointing new trustees.”

“The Last Will and Testament of Maxwell Alagiah was proved and registered before the High Court of Justice. The Administration of George’s estate is granted by this court to the following Executor of Frances Alagiah. The application has stated that the gross value of the estate in the United Kingdom amounts to £49,387.00 and the net value amounts to £49,387.00.”

Since 2007, the presenter has been BBC News’ face at Six. In 2014, George was diagnosed with bowel cancer, and in 2014, he underwent 17 rounds of chemotherapy and five operations to treat the condition, which had spread to his liver and lymph nodes.

Following his treatment, the father-of-two returned to work in April of last year, and he credited his job with keeping him motivated and energised. However, just six months later, in October of that year, he told viewers that the illness was returning, saying, “It’s back to the tough stuff.”

After her on-screen boyfriend, Ryan Donnelly, applied for an Apprehended Violence Order (AVO) against her, married At First Sight star, Jacqui Burfoot, arrived in Australia today.

Married At First Sight’s Jacqui Burfoot was seen at Sydney Court House today after her former onscreen husband filed for a protection order against her. Ryan Donnelly, who married Jacqui on the Australian version of the reality show last year – before they chose to separate during the Final Vows ceremony – applied for an Apprehended Domestic Violence order against the 29-year-old after his ex was granted an interim restraining order, preventing Ryan from talking about her on social media.

Although Jacqui sent an email opposing the restraining order, Magistrate Shane McAnulty wrote to the court to say he would not grant the order in her absence and that the parties should work together to submit documents before the case returns to court on June 24.

With her new fiancé Clint Rice and burly bodyguard, Jacqui smiled for the cameras as she entered the court today while wearing a trench coat, cream dress, Longchamp bag, and brown ankle boots.

The reality star and Ryan first spoke in person since MAFS filming finished in November of last year.

After the case was adjourned, she continued to speak with reporters about the allegations outside the court.

Marcia Edwards, her barrister, said it would be difficult for her to speak.

Ryan’s attorney, Daniel Wakim, later stated that his client still wanted protection and that he would discuss a resolution with Jacqui’s attorneys.

He said, “We haven’t yet seen what the respondent has to put on in relation to my client’s fears.”

Ryan claimed that his ex-wife had posted about him “almost incessantly” to media and that he was struggling emotionally.

He claimed that he never anticipated the outcome of his on-screen marriage, saying: “It wasn’t the adventure I had planned. I wanted to have this amazing chapter of my life, have a comfortable circle, and leave amicably and as friends.”

On July 29, the case will go back to court.

Ryan claimed to have suffered “a lot of harm” and was targeted by trolls as a result of ‘malicious’ claims Jacqui made about him online, along with his representative Shirin Razi from Azadi Lawyers, back in April.

He said outside the courthouse, “An individual has attempted to destroy my life, my potential for career options, collaborations,… with false allegations, so men can also be victims,” adding that he “was very afraid” at one point.

Ryan added that he believed the court would make a wise use of his time and that he would “have an extremely strong case” for defamation against his on-screen wife.

The reality star, however, said MAFS is a “programme that can do wonderful things for people” and that he would stop posting about Jacqui.
