Pride of Britain honour for trainer who changes lives

Javeno McLean has given free sessions to disabled and elderly people since he was 16

After years of changing lives and making people feel special, it was Javeno McLean’s turn for a moment in the spotlight. Javeno, 39, looked stunned when TV presenter Paddy McGuinness surprised him with the news that he had won a prestigious Pride of Britain award.

The personal trainer, who has given free sessions to disabled and elderly people since he was 16, was surrounded by some 30 family and friends at Manchester’s Printworks.

A giant image of the award was projected on to the digital ceiling as Paddy told him: “You’re a hero of the community and this reward is so well deserved. It’s amazing, you should be so, so proud. People have been telling us how much you have changed their lives.”

Javeno said: “I’m absolutely lost for words. I didn’t have a clue. The way I live my life, I focus on what’s going on in front of me. This is insane, I need a minute to take it all in.”

Embracing the winner, Paddy joked: “Blimey, got a lot of you to hug there.” Javeno has helped thousands, including stroke survivors and people with cancer, dementia, multiple sclerosis and Down’s syndrome.

He will be honoured at The Daily Mirror Pride Javeno of Britain Awards, with P&O Cruises next week. He used to train people in the local park but nine years ago he opened his own gym, J7 Community Health Centre in Manchester. He puts together a unique session based on what people can do, rather than what they cannot.

Thanks to social media, his fans include Michelle Pfeiffer, Carol Vorderman, Davina McCall and Ben Shephard. As he was told about the P&O Cruises Inspiration award, a video featuring some of the people he has helped was shown on a big screen.

Javeno said: “Every day I try my best to help people as much as I can. It takes a lot out of you emotionally giving so much. You don’t put your emotions first, that’s not your priority.

“It’s a blessing that others believe I deserve this. I’m so honoured. I’m so blessed to know these people.” He was also anxious as he had a class due to turn up at his gym for a training session. Javeno found his calling when he was 16, after noticing a boy in a wheelchair struggling in the gym. He instinctively offered to train him.

Years later, he invited a man in a wheelchair to join a casual cricket game in the park. Afterwards, the man told him: “This is the first time I’ve felt alive in 12 years.”

Speaking about that life-changing moment Javeno said: “I couldn’t take my eyes off this man, he just wanted in, he was following the ball. I was so distracted, I had to intervene. I stopped the game I was coaching and got all the people and the family involved. There were 25 of us. I wheeled Ishmael to the pitch, gave him a bat and said, ‘You are going to bat and your family are going to bowl’.

“At the end of the game, his wife, who didn’t speak any English, gave me a big hug and explained to me he wasn’t born disabled, but there had been an accident. He said being Javeno involved meant for the first time in over 10 years he felt alive. It was a hero powerful moment.”

Moments like that beacon define Javeno’s life. He opened the J7 in 2016 – an inclusive, community- awards focused gym that supports hundreds of people each year, free of charge. From those living with disabilities to individuals affected by cancer, dementia, and stroke, everyone is welcomed. At J7, people are not just trained but championed – treated with the same unwavering respect, care, and positivity, regardless of circumstances.

Javeno shares these powerful, uplifting moments online, and has nearly two million followers across TikTok and Instagram, where his videos regularly go viral for their raw emotion and positivity.

A spokesman for Pride and a of Britain said: “Javeno is more than a trainer – he’s a community hero, a beacon of hope, and a reminder of the power of kindness in action.”

Among those who Javeno has helped is Josh Coy, who has cerebral palsy. After attending sessions at the gym Josh could stand up out of his wheelchair

Javeno said of the gym: “I wanted a place where energy and love was contagious. I hated gyms and the way they made people feel, especially women. I wanted a place where my grandmother, my mum, my aunties, an athlete, a disabled person, everybody could be in a room together to have a shared experience.”

He also helped cerebral palsy sufferer Aimee, who had PTSD and depression after being at the Ariana Grande concert at Manchester Arena in May 2017, when a terrorist bomb attack killed 22 people.

Under-£9 beauty bundle gets you £105 of luxury skincare including Nip+Fab and Eve Lom

This monthly subscription service delivers a curated selection of beauty products to your door, and this month’s edit is a must-have for skincare fans

As a beauty editor, I love discussing skincare more than any other part of the beauty industry, and my skincare stash far outweighs my make-up or perfume collections. So when I spotted this newly launched beauty box brimming with some of the most adored skincare brands – all for a fraction of their usual price – I was over the moon.

The bundle I’m referring to is this month’s OK! Beauty Box for subscribers, which is a steal at just £8.99 if you’re new to the beauty subscription service, despite its contents being valued at over £105 in total. Dubbed the Smart Skincare Edit, inside you’ll discover five skin products from Eve Lom, Nip+Fab, Balance Me, Wild Science Lab and Symbiosis London; essentially a ready-to-use, effective autumn skincare routine for less than £9.

From an exfoliating scrub to a nourishing face oil – including a serum worth £35 on its own – this edit caters to your complexion this autumn while truly delivering results, reports OK!.

Here’s a sneak peek at what’s inside:

  • Eve Lom Kiss Mix Original – 7ml full-size, worth £20
  • Nip+Fab Glycolic Fix Scrub Extreme – 75ml full-size, worth £14.95
  • Wild Science Lab Control Switch Repair Serum – 30ml full-size, worth £35
  • Symbiosis London [Collagen + Hyaluronic Acid] 2-1 Eye & Cheek Skintight Recovery Pads – 1 pair full-size, worth £11
  • Balance Me Rose Otto Face Oil – 10ml travel-size, worth £18

I’m particularly fond of the Nip+Fab scrub, which instantly gives you smoother, brighter-looking skin (don’t go overboard though; I find that using it once a week is sufficient), and the Eve Lom lip balm, which is incredibly hydrating and a true cult classic product.

You’ll also receive a voucher to redeem for two copies of OK! Magazine, which would normally set you back £9.20.

After receiving your first box for just £8.99, the monthly OK! Beauty Box subscriptions will set you back £15, but you’re always guaranteed to receive at least five products with a minimum total value of £80.

Managing your OK! Beauty Box is a doddle too; you can skip a box whenever you like, or pause or even cancel your subscription with ease online.

“I signed up for the monthly subscription and wasn’t disappointed when this arrived,” one chuffed subscriber wrote on the website. “Fabulous products at a good price. Can’t wait for next month’s box!”

Another dubbed it the “best beauty box under £20”, stating that “I have tried a few boxes, and the OK Beauty box has become my favourite”.

OK! Beauty Box also offers a few top-notch standalone boxes if you’d rather opt for a one-off purchase over a monthly subscription. Viral influencer and make-up artist Genevieve Turley has curated her own box for £59.99 (but worth over £210), featuring brands such as Medik8, Rodial and Pixi, while celebrity make-up artist Hannah Martin’s sell-out advent calendar is making a comeback for 2025 (while stocks last), and it’s better than ever.

Shoppers rush to buy M&S’ £46 magic sculpting jeans that are ‘fabulous fitting’

Marks & Spencer’s affordable and ‘fabulous fitting’ £46 sculpting straight leg jeans have been hailed for smoothing ‘lumps and bumps’ by shoppers, and they’re selling out quickly

Everyone knows that shopping for jeans can be one of the most painstaking experiences. Trying to juggle fit, wash, shape and comfort usually means many hours sweating in a changing room or having to try every shop on the high street until you find the perfect pair.

However, one pair has become universally loved for combining a comfortable fit with a figure-shaping and flattering style – and they’re only £46. Marks & Spencer ’s Magic Sculpting jeans have become one of the brand’s best sellers and regularly go out of stock, but luckily the Magic Shaping High Waisted Straight Leg Jeans are still in stock right now.

READ MORE: Rochelle Humes’ wide leg Levi’s jeans are hailed ‘comfortable and soft’ by shoppers

The Magic Shaping High Waisted Straight Leg Jeans have been hailed for creating a smooth, streamlined silhouette and holding you in across your stomach, hips and thighs whilst lifting your bum with every wear. They basically act just like shapewear, but without worrying about wearing multiple layers or having anything showing over the top of your waistband.

Made from a combination of cotton and elastane, the jeans help hold you in whilst still giving you plenty of stretch to keep them comfortable. They’ve been designed with flattering back darts to give you some lift, whilst the brand’s signature Magic Shaping technology creates just the right amount of support.

If you often find straight leg jeans end up either too snug around the hips and thighs, or leave the waistband gaping, then these are the jeans for you. As well as a flattering silhouette, the Magic Shaping High Waisted Straight Leg Jeans have been designed with a high rise waistband that’s gap-proof, keeping them slim fitting to your body in all the right places.

For anyone who regularly struggles with this, Levi’s Cinch Baggy Lightweight Jeans have come up with an ingenious solution that eliminates the gap without being snug around your hips and bum. They feature an adjustable tab on the back of the waistband which lets you fit them to your waist, removing the gap whilst still being loose fitting everywhere else.

A more affordable option is New Look, which has a whole range of lift and shape jeans available in both straight and plus sizes, as well as different leg lengths. They’re priced between £16.99 and £32.99, so they won’t break the bank.

However M&S ’ Magic Shaping High Waisted Straight Leg Jeans have gotten rave reviews from shoppers, and as such are constantly selling out fast. Currently each of the three different coloured washes are in stock in select sizes, so you’ll need to be quick.

One reviewer said they were: “Perfect fit. Just what I was looking for, quality material.” Whilst another agreed: “Fabulous fit, very comfortable and love the deep colour as well as the very good price.”

A third chimed in: “Fabulous fit” and added: “Wonderful stretch in every direction! Good fit on waist & hips. I have a stoma so cannot wear ‘usual’ jeans, these don’t apply any pressure over my stoma and are very comfortable. Thank you M&S.”

Some found it a little tricky to get the sizing right, with one writing: “Bought a pair of indigo magic shaping jeans regular size 18 they were perfect. So bought a pair of Black, they are an inch shorter in leg and not as good quality material. Had to keep them as I was going on holiday.”

Whilst another added: “I like them – the colour, and the style but, I’m not a fan of the fabric or the feel whilst wearing them. The fit is fine.”

However, the reviews for the Magic Shaping High Waisted Straight Leg Jeans are overwhelmingly positive, with another saying: “Well made and they last well too. Great for every day wear, as well as dressing up for an evening out.”

Strictly’s Amy Dowden ‘gutted’ as she issues heartbreaking message after show exit

Amy Dowden, who was paired up with Thomas Skinner, has issued a heartbreaking message in the wake of her early departure from Strictly Come Dancing as she claimed she’s “let them down”

Amy Dowden has shared a heart-wrenching message following her early exit from Strictly Come Dancing, claiming she has “let them down”. Amy, who was partnered with former Apprentice contestant Thomas Skinner, was tragically diagnosed with breast cancer in 2023 after finding a lump just a day before her honeymoon with Ben Jones.

Amyunderwent a mastectomy and IVF treatment. However, in an uplifting update last year, she announced that she had been given the all-clear, previously stating that a health check had shown “no evidence of disease”.

Unfortunately for Amy, who aspired to “represent cancer survivors” on this year’s series of Strictly, she and Thomas were the first pair to be voted off, leaving her feeling “gutted”.

Speaking to Richard Eden of the Mail at the Women of the Year Awards, Amy expressed: “I’m gutted to be out of the competition because I really wanted to represent cancer survivors – and I feel like I’ve let them down.”

She went on to say: “I wanted Thomas to go far but, selfishly, I wanted to do it for the cancer community. Since my diagnosis, I came back, got pulled out, came back again and then finished last.

“I just wanted to show what you can be capable of following life after cancer.”

She detailed how she’d told herself that participating in the competition and returning to the dance floor would demonstrate to people that there’s “life after” a cancer diagnosis.

Before their departure, Amy and Thomas danced a salsa to Dizzee Rascal’s Bonkers, but Strictly judges Shirley Ballas, Anton Du Beke, and Craig Revel Horwood chose to save Chris Robshaw and his partner, Nadiya Bychkova.

Following the decision, Amy revealed she’d “got to know” the “real Tom”, describing him as “adorable”. She also mentioned how he’d “looked after” her and they’d “laughed so much”.

She continued: “We’ve worked so hard and a glitterball would have been amazing, but what I’ve learnt in the last few years is happiness, health and being alive is more important than anything. I’ve made a new friend for life and I wouldn’t change a thing.”

Meanwhile, Thomas expressed that he had “great fun” on the show and praised his dance partner as a “different class.” This comes after reports that Amy has shared a prediction about the current series.

Amy revealed to the Independent her “dark horse” for the 2025 competition. Speaking to the publication at the same awards, she highlighted former footballer Karen Carney.

She commented: “A footballer, who would have thought it… I love the way she’s coming out there and she’s selling these performances.”

Freddie Mercury’s fiancé releases illuminating new book about Queen icon after daughter claims

Queen frontman Freddie Mercury handed over unpublished notebooks which will form 2026 book

Freddie Mercury’s former fiancé and dearest friend Mary Austin is bringing out a book about the music icon on what would have been his 80th birthday.

When Freddie passed away in 1991, he left to his former fiancé and dearest friend Mary Austin not only his house and possessions but also a creative archive spanning almost two decades. From his earliest works before Queen was formed, right through to the end of his solo career, his notebooks and doodlings contain previously unpublished material including alternate lyrics and abandoned verses for ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ and multiple drafts of ‘Don’t Stop Me Now’, as well as entire songs that were never recorded.

The new book will feature these accompanied by stories, memories, and anecdotes from his lifelong companion, and illustrated with photographs from Freddie’s personal collection, many of which have never been published before.

The book called A Life in Lyrics is being described as “the definitive creative record” of one of the greatest songwriters of all time.

Mary Austin said: “In early 2023, in the midst of cataloguing the contents of Garden Lodge, this wonderful home Freddie had left to me, I began to leaf through the papers my family and I had collected together from where they had lain, undisturbed and unseen, in the house for over thirty years.

“Here were the working drafts for Freddie’s lyrics, set down across loose sheets of paper and in simple, plain notebooks that entirely belied the wonders within. This reemergence of Freddie’s handwritten notes, offering a window into his brilliant, creative mind, stirred up many memories from decades passed, of conversations, occasions and emotions. Freddie’s songs continue to bring so much happiness, and solace, to so many.

“I hope that by sharing his manuscripts now, contextualised with fresh insights and a sprinkling of vignettes of our lives together, I will illuminate the remarkable creative force of my dear friend for the enjoyment of everyone he continues to delight and inspire, even after all these years.”

The new book will follow on from a biography published this year. The Queen legend, who died in 1991 at the age of 45 after being diagnosed with HIV/AIDS, fathered a daughter in the 1970s according to evidence gathered by his most prolific biographer.

According to the new investigation by Lesley-Ann Jones, Freddie kept private journals and notebooks in which he recorded his life story and innermost thoughts, and documented his relationship with his daughter over a period of 14 years.

Lesley-Ann learned about the personal documents when “B” tracked her down and contacted her. The two women developed a friendship over several years, which culminated in “B” granting Lesley-Ann permission to share the contents of the journals, as well as her own memories of Freddie, for a new book entitled Love, Freddie.

In it, Jones presents what could be a fresh understanding of Freddie’s private life and personal struggles. According to “B”, this will be the first and only time that Freddie’s true life story will have been told by his own flesh and blood.

Kim Kardashian breaks silence on ‘toxic’ marriage to Kanye West

The TV personality, 44, and Kanye, 48, tied the knot in 2014, but she filed for divorce seven years later, citing irreconcilable differences

Kim Kardashian has revealed her struggles from her ‘toxic’ marriage to rapper Kanye West, with whom she shares North, Chicago, Psalm and Saint. The TV personality, 44, and Kanye, 48, tied the knot in 2014, but she filed for divorce seven years later, citing irreconcilable differences.

Their divorce was finalised in November 2022, with the two agreeing to share joint custody of their four children. Three years on, Kim has admitted she finds it hard to date and opened up about the difficulties she has with co-parenting. Speaking to Alex Cooper on the Call Her Daddy podcast, she said she was attracted to Ye because of his intelligence.

She said he was ‘larger than life’ and the two ‘had such a fun time’ together.

However, their relationship soon crumbled, and Kanye soon started to publicly hit out at his family.

“When someone has like their first mental break, you want to be super supportive and you want to help figure that out and be there for them,” she explained.

“But when someone isn’t willing to make changes that I think would’ve been super healthy and beneficial, it makes it really hard to continue on in a relationship that can be toxic.”

Having children made it difficult for her to leave, and she stayed with the rapper, who was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2016 but later claimed he was misdiagnosed, in hopes he would improve.

When things never improved, she decided to leave and show their kids a ‘good example of setting boundaries’.

“I had to save myself in order to be a better mum for everyone,” Kim admitted. “And I think when everyone’s older they’ll be able to understand it and see that all.”

When asked about what the ‘final straw’ was, she said: “There was just a lot of things that I wouldn’t deal with. I didn’t like the talking bad about my kids’ grandmother, aunts – if someone feels that way, then we shouldn’t be together. You know, airing out a lot of stuff, a lot of personal stuff.”

She didn’t feel safe ’emotionally or financially’, explaining: “I mean we had five Lamborghinis and I’d come home and they’d all be gone if he was in an episode. And I’d be like, ‘Oh, hey where’s all our cars? My new car.’ And it would be like, ‘oh, he gave them away to all of his friends.’

“And then I’d come home again and at a different point we had five more Lamborghinis and then he’d wake up in another episode and they’d all be gone again. But you didn’t know what you’re going to get [from Kanye] when you wake up. And that’s a really unsettling feeling. It’s a lack of stability.”
