Inside Black Sabbath’s biggest scandals from drugs woes to eating live bat on-stage

Black Sabbath are a legendary band that helped define the genre of heavy metal, but in a career that has spanned more than 50 years they have had their fare share of scandal.

Black Sabbath is one of the biggest bands in heavy metal history. Front manned by the iconic but temperamental Ozzy Osbourne it’s fair to see the band is no stranger to scandals. The band lived and breathed the rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle often taking it to the extreme.

But after more than 50 years playing for fans, the Birmingham-born band will be hanging up their guitars for good with one last farewell performance at a jam-packed Villa Park Stadium on Saturday (July 5).

But with more than five decades touring the world, the band’s history is full of controversy, rolling the clock back, here are some of the biggest scandals to hit Black Sabbath.

Rockstars or Satanists?

First forming in 1968 in an era of flower power, Black Sabbath stood from something all around very different. They didn’t pretend to be of the Woodstock era and instead embraced the grungy darkness.

However, different things often scare people, and Black Sabbath soon fell into that category. The band’s dark imagery played a part and their self-titled song also featured some lyrics that perhaps didn’t help their cause.

“Big black shape with eyes of fire. Tellin’ people their desire. Satan’s sittin’ there, he’s smilin’. ‘Watches those flames get higher and higher. Oh, no, no, please, God, help me,” the band sing.

For many this just proved they dabbled in the satanic, but the song’s lyrics, written by Geezer Butler were misunderstood. They came from a night when he was lying in bed with upside-down crosses hanging on the wall when he claimed to have seen a ghost. “It frightened the p**sing life out of me,” he said.

So he wrote the song about the dangers of messing with the paranormal. Meanwhile, Ozzy was an atheist and instead just enjoyed the dark. Talking about the controversy, drummer Bill Ward is paraphrased as boiling it down to being just a bunch of blokes from Birmingham.

Drugs battles

It’s no secret that Black Sabbath and particularly frontman Ozzy Osbourne indulged in the white stuff in their heyday. Cocaine in particular became an almost constant companion on the road. In an interview on The Madhouse Chronicles Podcast, Osbourne talked about his history with addiction.

He said: “In Sabbath, when we discovered cocaine, it was like the meaning of life… We had a dealer on the road with us.

“We had this guy, he was a bit strange, And he’d have these f*****g bags with these big f*****g chunks of coke. Big bags of coke. ”

There are even reports that during the recording of their album Vol. 4, many sessions had to be cut short because of drug use. This continued to escalate tensions throughout the 70’s which in 1979 eventually led to Ozzy’s firing from the band for his erratic behaviour.

Bill Ward’s battle

While Ozzy opted for cocaine, Bill Ward, Black Sabbath’s drummer, has spoken out about his struggles with alcohol particularly during their heyday. His drinking began to spiral to the point where he was heavily drinking during gigs. By the late 70’s the lifestyle caught up with Bill, whose mental health took a hit which led to his departure in 1980 after their album Heaven and Hill.

The drummer left very abruptly, shocking the band at the time. He famously told new singer Ronnie James Dio: “I’m off then, Ron,” before disappearing with the band not seeing him for months.

Managerial Mayhem

Beyond their internal struggles, the band found themselves embroiled in complicated legal battles with their management throughout the 1970s. The issues began with the first main manager Patrick Meehan who the band claims ripped them off as they were “clueless about finances” according to Butler.

They eventually switched to infamous and brash music manager Don Arden, the father of Sharon Osbourne, and although he secured a better deal for the band, the relationship was often tested. When Sharon took over the solo management of Ozzy it even led to some family friction with her becoming estranged from her dad for 20 years after the split.

Ozzy’s bat biting antics

During performances in the 80s Ozzy began a strange ritual where he would pummel the crowd of his shoes with raw meat and they in turn would throw back whatever strange objects they managed to sneak in. But in 1982 during a show in Des Moines, one fan threw a live bat onto the stage – creating the now infamous moment.

Speaking to Rolling Stone Ozzy said: “I thought it was a rubber bat, I picked it up, put it in my mouth, crunched down, bit into it, being the clown that I am. ”

“Bats are the biggest carriers of rabies in the world, and I had to go to the hospital afterwards and they started giving me rabies shots. I had one one each rear and I had to have that every night. ”

A sitcom star has been seen looking completely different as he made a Wimbledon appearance this week. The Office US star Rainn Wilson blended into the tennis fans as he enjoyed the annual sporting event.

The actor wore a khaki-coloured bucket hat and navy blue jacket as well as a bushy beard and moustache which isn’t the look fans will remember from The Office US.

The US actor is best known for his iconic role of Dwight Schrute where he appeared on NBC for nine seasons. Other famous faces such as Steve Carell and John Krasinski also appeared on the series.

Rainn’s character was a paper salesman and regional manager who is known for his comical habits. Rainn has a clean shaven look for his role but it looks like he’s now gone for a different style.

He starred in the sitcom from 2005 to 2013. Despite the show finishing more than ten years ago, The Office became the most watched show on Netflix during the coronavirus pandemic in 2020.

Rainn is best known for his comedy role but has also opened up in the past about his difficult childhood. He appeared on Steven Bartlett’s The Diary of A CEO podcast and talked about the abuse and trauma he faced as a child.

“I experienced a lot of pain in my life and a lot of suffering with anxiety and depression and addiction,” he explained. “As I dove into recovery and the therapeutic process, I can pin that squarely on a lot of gross imbalances and trauma that I suffered as a child. “

The star also revealed he was in therapy for more than 22 years to learn to undo the trauma that has haunted him for so long. “It’s important to excavate and honour the pain we went through, the lies that we were told, the gaslighting that we might have undergone, religious trauma as well, all kinds of different traumas that we suffer,” he added.

Rainn told the podcast host that his mother “took off” before he was two years old and left him with his father and eventually his stepmother as well. The actor said his father made a move and took him to “the jungles of Nicaragua when I was three years old,” as he said. Rainn eventually settled in Washington just as he started kindergarten.

When his father remarried, Rainn said he was raised in a “loveless shell of a house” and encountered “lots of different kinds of abuse” full of rage and “gaslighting. ” The actor said his home life pushed him into acting and comedy.

“There’s a reason why so many comedians come from painful backgrounds because comedy is what you plug in to shift your perspective away from pain and trauma just like gratitude takes you away from depression,” he explained.

Oasis was supported by Richard Ashcroft ahead of their epic reunion gig in Cardiff last night, but one fan was caught using Shazam during one of The Verve star’s iconic songs

An Oasis fan watching the reunion gig in Cardiff last night has gone viral after being caught using Shazam to identify what many reckon is one of the greatest songs of all time. The Britpop sensations were supported by Richard Ashcroft at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff who treated fans to The Verve’s classic Bittersweet Symphony.

The iconic track from 1997 has been named one of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time by Rolling Stone magazine, but one fan in the stadium appeared to have never heard of the masterpiece. In a clip shared on TikTok, in which a woman can be seen using the app to identify the song, one irate fan wrote: “Did they just Shazam the national anthem? Imagine not knowing the greatest song of all time. “

Quickly flocking to the comments section, others sensationally fumed that the woman didn’t deserve her ticket to the gig, which has been sold out for months.

They complained: “Seriously! I couldn’t get a ticket because of these people. ” Another ranted: “This is the people who got our tickets. ” While a third said: “If you don’t know Bittersweet Symphony we can’t be friends. There’s no way I lost tickets to someone Shazamming one of the most popular songs of the Britpop era. “

Despite the mad rush for tickets when Oasis announced their reunion last year, with many fans complaining they couldn’t get one or were being asked to pay through the nose, 70,000 lucky people did manage to go to the glittering gig last night.

The special evening at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium marked the start of the Gallagher brothers’ epic world tour – and it didn’t disappoint.

The crowd were blown away by both Richard and Oasis as the Supersonic stars delivered an electrifying set, packed with energy and nostalgia.

Taking to social media to share their reactions, many reckoned the gig was the ‘greatest rock n roll show of all time’ as they praised the ‘momentous’ occasion.

Comments included: “LIAM SOUNDS SO F****G GOOD! ! ! OASIS ARE BACK. THIS IS BETTER THAN JESUS’ RETURN! ! ” as another dramatically declared: “I died and ascended to a new plane. “

Also enjoying the gig was Noel’s daughter, Anais, who looked like she’d had a whale of a time as she posted a snap of herself with a pint of beer, wearing an Oasis shirt.

Captioning the photo, she simply wrote: “It’s great to be back” as many other fans agreed.

However, the 25-year-old’s mum, Meg Matthews, who was also at the concert, left before Noel came back on stage to perform Wonderwall, which was written for Meg by her ex when they were together.

Noel had originally claimed he’d written it on a rainy Tuesday night for his then girlfriend. Back in 1996, he said: “It’s about my girlfriend, Meg Mathews. She had a company which folded and she was feeling a bit sorry for herself. The sentiment is that there was no point in her feeling down, she has to sort my life out for me because I was in bits at the time. “

Noel Gallagher is known for his dry sense of humour, however some Oasis fans are only just finding out about a cheeky prank the musician played on his brother Liam Gallagher for years.

Stories about Liam and Noel have been circulating online as their Oasis Live ’25 tour kicked off in Cardiff last night (Friday July 4), and one fan shared an Oasis story on X which they claimed was the ‘best of all time’.

The fan, named Paul, shared a screenshot from an article which revealed Noel spent years moving furniture around to ‘make Liam believe in ghosts’.

Captioning the post, Paul said: “Fairly certain that no Oasis story will ever be better than this. “

The Vice article referenced a story from The Mirror back in 2016. It reported that Noel had decided to play the prank on Liam and have ‘decades of fun’ as Liam is ‘terrified of evil spirits’.

Noel recalled at the time: “It’s highly amusing and if we were ever anywhere remotely spooky, we’d tell Liam that the house was haunted, particularly his bedroom.

“We convinced him his bedroom was haunted, so when he’d get up in the morning and go and have his breakfast, someone would go in and turn the pictures back to front, or f***ing move a lamp beside his bed across the other side of the room.

“He’d arrive pale: ‘Have you been in my f***ing room? ’ ‘No, why? ’ ‘You’ve been in my room, because now the f***ing lamp is in the toilet. ’ ‘No way, f***ing hell. Wow. ’

“Yeah, that was amusing. That was worth it. ”

The X post about the story has gone viral in the last few days, racking up more than 600,000 views.

One person called the tale “so good”, while another quipped: “The things people do to keep their spirits up! “

A third chimed in: “It’s just the sort of thing an older sibling would do! “

Noel and Liam’s first show at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium saw the pair out on stage together after ending a row which has lasted over a decade.

The brothers, from Manchester, came out to a roaring crowd and walked to the stage with their song “F**king in the Bushes” playing. They then performed their hit “Hello,” a thousands of pints were thrown into the air by fans.

Oasis played some of their biggest hits from the show, with the tour setlist featuring tracks such as Acquiesce, Morning Glory, Some Might Say, Bring It On Down, Cigarettes & Alcohol and Live Forever.

Oasis tickets spotted on sale for £72 despite Liam Gallagher’s claim

Oasis ticket prices have dropped to a jaw-dropping £72 for their Cardiff seats as more tickets are issued to allow fans to witness the Gallagher brothers reunite

Oasis tickets are now on sale at a staggeringly low price(Image: PA)

The long awaited reunion of Oasis has kept fans on the edge of their seats since the announcement was made last year. Many at the time complained that tickets to the UK leg of their world tour were hard to come by due to issues with ticket sales website, or in fact the price was too high.

But now fans who missed on tickets now have the opportunity to watch their favourite band on stage for a fraction of the price.

Tickets for their Cardiff gig tonight, held at the Principality Stadium, have now been dropped to £72. 15 for tonight’s show on the resale site Twickets.

And this is for U34 Row 32. This was noticed when the filters for the price section of the website changed to “low to high”.

It comes after Liam shouted out to the crowd at last night’s show in Cardiff: “Are you having a good time? Is it worth the £40,000 you paid for a ticket?”

The rock band who took the nineties by storm with hits including Wonderwall, kick started their reunion tour Oasis Live ’25 in Cardiff.

This is the first location of many as they then make their way around the rest of the UK and the world.

Liam and Noel Gallagher were last seen on stage together 16 years ago before their well publicised fall out which resulted in the brothers not speaking to each other for many years.

But it looks as though the hatchet has been well and truly buried as the brothers came out on stage last night (July 4) hand in hand.

The pair treated fans to their iconic hits including Supersonic and Champagne Supernova.

Other UK cities on their tour list include Manchester Edinburgh, London and Dublin.

And as a nod to the iconic rock and roll group, the city of Cardiff have made a special effort to embrace the spirit of the group by laying on a number of Oasis themed treats.

Doughtnut brand WhoCult have provided residents and fans with Oasis Doughnuts at Digsy’s Dinner.

Health food shop Holland & Barrett have been offering free Kombucha to residents and Pizza Express have been running a limited edition Oasis inspired menu.

At the time of their reunion announcement it was uncertain whether the brothers would repeat old habits and lock horns once again, ahead of the Cardiff concert.

But according to body language expert Judi James, they appeared in harmony and put on a united front.

She told The Mirror: “It was really enough to see them on the same planet, in the same vicinity or on the same stage and getting through their set without anyone walking off.”

She added: “But they gave the fans a celebratory ritual that almost suggested an air of sibling peace and harmony, walking out with their arms raised together in acknowledgment. Analysis of the ritual is fascinating. It’s Liam who has grabbed Noel’s wrist to raise their arms, suggesting he’s the one wanting to push the idea that they’re reunited for real. “

Judi then explained: “He also places a confident and controlling hand onto Noel’s shoulder, raising his maracas in the air in what looks like a V sign to signal victory. “
