‘Victoria Beckham and I got eating disorders for same reason, I almost died’

Former Emmerdale star Gemma Oaten has spoken of the sadness and devastation eating disorders can cause and voiced fears the ‘heroin chic’ trend from the 90s is returning

Victoria Beckham has revealed she has faced a lifelong struggle with an eating disorder after being body shamed at theatre school when she was a teen.

The Spice Girl turned fashion designer will open up about her ordeal for the first time in her new Netflix documentary, saying she had controlled her weight in an “incredibly unhealthy way”.

“I have been everything from porky posh to skinny posh, I mean, it’s been a lot and that’s hard,” said the 51-year-old star of being judged for her size over the years.

“I never spoke about it publicly, it really affects you. When you’re told constantly you’re not good enough. And I suppose that’s been with me my whole life.”

Former Emmerdale actress Gemma Oaten knows first hand the devastating impact of an eating disorder, having suffered with anorexia for 13 years. The star was hospitalised 21 times from the age of 12 to 19 and heartbreakingly told The Times last year: “I could be sitting here today with a husband and a child. I might not have had a heart attack at 18.”

Gemma, 41, grew up in the ’90s, a time when the term “heroin chic” became popular, with extremely thin fashion models placed on a dangerous pedestal. Like Victoria, she says, “My eating disorder stemmed from bullying.

“I couldn’t control what people were saying but I felt my weight was something I could control. I began my eating disorder journey at ten years old in 1994 and I remember the Spice Girls coming out around 1996.

“It’s just so ironic and sad that these were powerful, go-getting women who me and many other girls around the world looked up to and aspired to be and yet I think three of them – Mel C has talked openly about an eating disorder, Geri has and now Victoria Beckham, it’s just really sad to think that those people I looked up to were struggling as well. It just goes to show that nobody knows the hidden battles between the success and the glamour and the glitz.”

The star told how Victoria’s description of a need for control resonated deeply. “I think it’s really brave that Victoria has spoken out,” said Gemma, who has been appeared in Doctors and Coronation Street.

“She’s very eloquent in saying about how an eating disorder is about control, which is a really important thing to get across in the narrative.

“A lot of people misconstrue that an eating disorder is brought about by seeing images of thin people and magazines and social media. Yes, there is an element of that but ultimately it’s about losing control over something and feeling like the eating disorder is a way of getting control back.”

“Like she says in the article, people were just having opinions of her and she was losing sense of who she was and couldn’t control the narrative,” she added.

“The eating disorder tricks you into believing that there is something you can control but the ironic thing is that an eating disorder will make you lose control of everything. It’s such a sad and devastating mental health illness.”

Gemma is now the CEO of SEED, a charity service that provides support to people with eating disorders. Worryingly, she feels we are going backwards when it comes to the pressure women face to be skinny. “There’s a lot around pressure to be skinny again at the moment which is really scary,” she said.

“I was talking about it to my friend, with the Montjaro jabs. In the ’90s and ’00s we were in our Kate Moss and Jodie Kidd era, ‘heroin chic’ was on the catwalk. It was this big narrative around how skinny and thin was beautiful.

“Then things progressed with body positivity and seeing larger models and people in our social streams and on television. All of a sudden I feel like the narrative is going back to: thin is how society is meant to be, especially for women.

Katie Price ordered to cut ‘extravagant’ spending as she’s set to lose half her monthly income

Katie Price faced more financial woes as she was told to pay almost half her earnings to creditors after being declared bankrupt for a second time last year

Katie Price is set to lose almost half of her monthly income from multiple companies to pay off creditors after a judge said she must reduce her “extravagant pattern of expenditure”.

The former glamour model was first declared bankrupt in 2019 and again last year. Both bankruptcies have since been discharged, but she remains the subject of a court order known as an income payments order (IPO) – meaning she must pay 40 per cent of her monthly income from several companies to the trustee of her bankruptcies until February 2027.

On Thursday, barristers for the trustee asked a specialist bankruptcy court to make a second IPO, which would see a further 10 companies pay 40% of Ms Price’s monthly income to the trustee for three years. The companies include media and entertainment firms, and the partnership which acts as Ms Price’s agent.

Neither Ms Price nor any of the 10 companies were in attendance or represented at the hearing. But Deputy Insolvency and Companies Court Judge Stephen Baister said Ms Price had “every opportunity to appear and to make representations”.

Making the second IPO, he said: “The bankrupt’s expenditure seems to have exceeded her income, but that is only because she has adopted an extravagant pattern of expenditure, that of course she is now going to have to trim somewhat.”

He continued: “I will make the order for the reasons that the trustee of the bankruptcies seeks.”

The judge said that Ms Price now works as an influencer and has “enjoyed a considerable amount of success”, earning income “that by any standard would be regarded as significant”.

He also said that “very substantial sums remain that provide ample headroom” for Ms Price, despite the second IPO being made.

Rowena Page, for the trustee, told the court in written submissions that under the terms of the first IPO, Ms Price had to pay a lump sum of £25,000 and 34 monthly payments of £12,500 to the trustee.

But she continued that Ms Price had “failed to make the lump-sum payment due” and had “failed to discharge any of the monthly instalments she was ordered to make”.

Ms Page also said that more than £124,000 had been paid to the trustee by the companies covered by the first IPO. She added that the second IPO “should be granted for the benefit of Ms Price’s creditors”.

She said: “It is apparent that Ms Price earns sums significantly in excess of the sums required to meet her and her family’s reasonable domestic needs.”

After her first bankruptcy in November 2019, Ms Price was made bankrupt again in March 2024 over an unpaid tax bill worth more than £750,000.

The first IPO was made in February last year and covered Ms Price’s monthly income from four companies, including the adult entertainment website OnlyFans, with more added at a hearing in July last year. At that hearing, a judge also issued a warrant for Ms Price’s arrest after she failed to attend.

She was due to attend a public examination in August last year to face questions over her finances, but this was adjourned so she could attend a “private interview”. Both bankruptcies were then discharged earlier this year, but the IPOs remain in force as they were applied for before the bankruptcies ended.

Big Brother star Simone Reed jailed after buying petrol used in Molotov cocktail

Former Big Brother star Simone Reed has been jailed for 32 months after a person was ‘set alight’ at a Teesside bar back in February

A former Big Brother star has been jailed after a person was ‘set alight’ at a Teeside bar. The 36-year-old, who was a contestant on the hit show in 2017, drove with Carl Wild to a garage after threatening to firebomb the Peggy Junes pub in Redcar following a row.

Reed watched on as Wild, 34, launched the Molotov cocktail at reveller David Brotton. The petrol bomb hit the victim in the head and CCTV video showed Brotton rolling around on the ground to try and extinguish the flames.

Today, Carl Wild and his co-accused were in court to hear their sentences. Carl Wild admitted to causing grievous bodily harm with intent and aggravated burglary and he received 18 and a half years – a prison term of 13 years and six months and five years on extended licence.

Lee Wild – who admitted causing fear of violence – was handed an 18-week prison term. Reed was in tears in court earlier this year as she pleaded guilty to encouraging or assisting the commission of an offence – the offence being arson with recklessness as to whether life would be endangered.

“I had no idea that Carl was going to take it as far as he did… I did not expect at any point that anyone would suffer physical injury,” she said in her basis of plea. She today has received a sentence of 32 months in jail.

Handing out the sentences, Judge Laird said: “Just before 8pm a fight occurred outside the bar. One participant produced a large knife. Carl Wild you were seen on CCTV revelling in the violence. You were refused entry back into the bar.

“A fist fight ensued between you and the owner of the bar, and he knocked you to the ground. Inside the club, Simone Reed, you head-butted the owner Mr Jarvis. Carl Wild and Simone Reed, and her sister, drove in her car to a nearby petrol station. Wild you selected a jerry can, alcohol and a bottle of bleach. You filled the jerry can with petrol.

“Simone Reed, you paid for the items and you placed the petrol can in your car. Simone, you demanded to go back into the bar to collect your telephone. When that was refused, you threatened to petrol-bomb the bar.”

Judge Laird added: “Lee Wild, you arrived in a Range Rover. Carl Wild appeared, you can be seen on CCTV lighting an improvised petrol bomb, made from the bottle of alcohol. You were carrying a car jack and a bottle of bleach. You threw the petrol bomb at [the victim’s] back. It exploded into flames and engulfed his head, face and shoulders.

“Carl Wild you squirted bleach on terrified customers – who feared they would be set alight. You proceeded to smash up the bar. The DJ tried to prevent you from damaging his mixing desk, so you attacked him. As you left, you smashed the window of the car where the bar owner’s heavily pregnant partner sat.”

Giving the sentencing, Judge Laird also said of their decision to jail Reed: “You drove Carl Wild to the petrol station where he obtained the items to make the petrol bomb. You paid for the items. You threatened the landlord to petrol bomb the pub,” but the judge did accept that Reed was remorseful for what had happened.

Princess Kate shows support to Victoria Beckham in ‘bold’ trouser suit in trending autumn colour

Kate Middleton has given a subtle show of support for Victoria Beckham on the day of her Netflix documentary, wearing a trouser suit in the ‘bold’ colour of the season – olive green

We can always count on Kate Middleton to be ahead of the curve when it comes to fashion, and when she wore an olive green trouser suit back in May, we knew it was going to become an instant hit. And sure enough, as autumn has rolled around, olive green is the top trending colour of the season, which is why Princess Kate thought now was the perfect time to re-wear her chic trouser suit.

During a visit to charity Home-Start Oxford today, the Princess of Wales re-wore the olive green tailored suit that was designed by none other than British icon Victoria Beckham. Whether a happy accident or a subtle show of support to coincide with the release of Victoria’s new Netflix documentary (which launched today) one thing is for sure; Princess Kate’s suit is about to be the must-have look for autumn.

Whilst Kate’s bold olive green version of the suit is now officially out of stock everywhere, you can still pick it up in a slightly more muted shade of green. The Alina Trousers are available in the shade Oregano for £490, whilst the aptly named Katherine Jacket – which also comes in shade Oregano – is £890.

Currently the trousers are very low in stock, with only sizes eight, 12 and 14 still available to buy. However they’re also available at Selfridges in a much broader range of sizes, with sizes six to 14 still in stock.

Whilst meeting the children at Home-Start, one child accidentally dirtied Princess Kate’s suit during messy play, with one of the children injecting Kate with a toy syringe. The Princess also left with flour on the jacket of her trouser suit and she asked another child “what are you making, are you making a cake? Delicious.”

Whilst we’re a huge fan of Princess Kate’s VB trouser suit – and her love of re-wearing the items in her wardrobe – if it’s a little out of budget there are some other places to get her look without breaking the bank. At Hobbs, the Neava Wide Trousers are currently on sale down from £119 to £101.15 and come in a similar dark green shade. You can also pair it perfectly with the matching Neava Jacket which is now £139.30, down from £199.

For an even more budget-friendly pick, River Island’s Green Long Sleeve Oversized Blazer is £59, whilst the matching Green Wide Leg Tailored Trousers are £39. The trousers have a more wide leg fit to Kate’s tailored, tapered style, but the suit is a great way to embody her look for less.

Stanley cups have shot up in popularity over the past few years, becoming the water bottle to get your hands on. Although items like this are often not worth the hype, Stanley is not one of those.

The cups keep liquids genuinely cold or hot all day long, and the larger size is great for upping your water consumption throughout the day. Not to mention, they also look stylish on your desk or in your gym bag.

I’m a fashion writer – this is what to buy from Debenhams X Ashish collection with Kim Cattrall

The Debenhams X Ashish collection with Kim Cattrall is finally available to shop and I’ve already got my hands on some of the pieces – here’s my top picks as a fashion writer

When Debenhams announced its latest Designer collaboration was with Ashish , I couldn’t wait to get my hands on it. When they announced the face of it was Kim Cattrall; well, you better believe I was counting down in my calendar to snap up some items from it.

Although the first look at the pieces has been around for over a week, the collection only just officially launched on the Debenhams website today, and everything is now available to shop. I was lucky enough to get my hands on some pieces early, and there are four pieces that I think are an absolute must-buy from the whole collection.

Ashish Pink Maxi Faux Fur Coat – £195

Let’s start off strong, with one of my absolute favourite pieces in the entire collection. This pink faux fur coat is a showstopper, and it’s the absolute bringer of joy in any wardrobe. The second I put this on, I felt quite literally like a movie star, and it gave me such an intense dopamine hit that I couldn’t bring myself to take it off for at least 15 minutes.

The faux fur is thick, soft and luxurious feeling, and it’s made with absolutely impeccable quality. The sizing is also generous; I’m typically a size 14, and will regularly size up to a 16 in jacket for added room, and the size large in this was plenty big enough to squeeze chunky knits underneath (not that you need it – this will keep you warm in an arctic blizzard with nothing but a mini dress underneath.) All in all, absolutely faultless, and my favourite piece out of everything in the collection.

Ashish Hot Pink Sequin Mini Dress – £110

If there’s one thing Ashish is known for, it’s sequin mini dresses, so it was a given that this collection would feature several different styles. You can imagine my joy when I spotted this version of the brand’s iconic sequin mini for a much more affordable £110 (the designer’s sequin mini dresses typically cost around £2k) which comes in a hot pink colour that pairs perfectly with the faux fur coat.

The dress is another generously fitting size – I opted for my usual 14, but could probably have gotten away with a size smaller. However I like that it has a more relaxed, straight cut rather than a figure-hugging shape, as it gives it a much more cool, laidback and effortless look. Well, as effortless as a hot pink sequin mini can be any way.

My one caveat with this dress is that it’s quite delicate. I lost five sequins just trying it on, so if you’re planning on wearing it for a party, you’ll either need to limit your dance moves or resign yourself to the fact you’ll leave a little pink sequin trail behind you. It does come with extras though, so you can always quickly reattach any that you’ve lost along the way.

Ashish Swirl Print Sparkle Tube Skirt – £75

This was a bit of an unusual choice for me; at 5ft 4” I tend to avoid longer skirts and dresses for fear of them drowning me, however I took a chance on this one and I’m so glad that I did. It’s deceptively flattering considering its simple tube skirt design, and the stretchy material makes it a dream for wearing for dinners, whilst bloated or even whilst pregnant.

This one I would definitely recommend sizing down in as it’s very roomy and stretchy, but even on my height the skirt wasn’t so long it trailed on the ground and can be worn with all styles of shoes from heels to flats. The colours and print are also unusual enough to be a stand out whilst still being wearable and easy to style, and who doesn’t love a subtle bit of sparkle?

Ashish Spray Paint Maxi Faux Fur Coat – £195

The final top pick of mine is the Spray Paint faux fur coat. This has been the star of the campaign with Kim Cattrall, and it’s not hard to see why. Just like the pink version, the faux fur is luxuriously soft and thick, and it’s heavy enough to feel warm and cosy without being uncomfortable to wear. The colours are so vibrant and, again like the pink version, bring an instant dopamine hit to any outfit.

Article continues below

You could of course save this for a special occasion, but you could just as easily wear it with jeans and a T-shirt to bring some fun and joy to a basic outfit combination. You also have the added bonus of being able to remove the waist belt and wear it as a faux fur scarf, which gives you even more styling options.
