Bargain Hunt star loses jail sentence appeal over sales to ‘Hezbollah financier’

A Bargain Hunt expert was given a jail sentence for selling high-end art to a US national who had been arrested on suspicion of financing Hezbollah.

A BBC Bargain Hunt art expert, who was jailed for failing to report a series of high-value art sales to a man suspected of financing militant group Hezbollah, has lost an appeal against his sentence.

Oghenochuko Ojiri was jailed for two and a half years and a further year on licence in June for selling artwork worth around £140,000 to Nazem Ahmad, a man designated by US authorities as a suspected financier for the Lebanese organisation.

The 53-year-old is the first person alleged to have been charged with the offence because he had previously admitted guilt to eight crimes under section 21A of the Terrorism Act 2000.

Ojiri’s lawyers told the Court of Appeal on Wednesday that the art dealer should be sentenced to a lower sentence. They argued that the artist was “naive.”

However, three senior judges decided against the claim and said Ojiri “knew what he was doing.” There can be a lot of things said in his favor, according to Lord Justice Edis, who is seated alongside Judge Samantha Leigh and Mr. Justice Martin Spencer. However, we must accept that he poses a naive offender’s role.

He may have been an inexperienced art dealer, but by the time this series of transactions began, he was fully aware of his obligations, of Ahmad’s activities, and of the causes of those obligations.

He continued, “He was committing these crimes in order to make a sizable sum of money,” and he knew what he was doing. That is not at all naive.

In January 2020, Ojiri was accused of failing to report information about transactions in the regulated art market sector on or before October 2020 due to new money laundering laws that were passed by the HMRC.

According to the prosecution, Ojiri was the owner and manager of the Ramp Gallery at the time. According to a previous hearing, Ojiri was aware that Mr. Ahmad, who was alleged to be based in Beirut, had been arrested in the US.

According to US prosecutors, Mr. Ahmad used “high-value art and diamonds” to launder money and finance the organization. He is a “major Hezbollah financial donor.” He is accused of avoiding terrorism sanctions by using front companies to buy more than 160 million pounds of artwork and diamond services.

Hezbollah is a Shia Islamist political and militant group based in Lebanon, backed by Iran and known for its armed resistance against Israel.

The entire organization, including both its political and military wing, has been declared a terrorist organization in the UK since 2019.

Mrs Justice Cheema-Grubb, sentencing, told Ojiri he had been involved in a commercial relationship “for prestige and profit”, and that he had been “seeking the kudos of dealing with an eminent name in the dealing world ”.

On Wednesday, Gavin Irwin, who was representing Ojiri, testified for the Court of Appeal, claiming the judge did not consider mitigating factors in the case and did not take into account Ojiri’s naivety or inexperience.

This was not a man who was ignorant or uninterested in the change in the law, according to Crown Prosecution Service spokesperson Lyndon Harris.

He added that there were instances of Ojiri “changing the details on invoices to conceal Mr. Ahmad’s identity,” citing the offence as being “a serious example of a section 21A offence.”

Although the case “did not involve any money moving from the appellant to any terrorist organization or any other criminal source,” Ojiri “went to some trouble” to “disclose Mr. Ahmad’s identity,” according to Lord Justice Edis. He came to the conclusion that the phrase “was not fundamentally excessive or wrong.”

Ojiri, of Brent, north London, has appeared on a number of BBC shows, including Bargain Hunt and Antiques Road Trip, as a freelance presenter.

Although he was detained while filming a BBC TV program, it is known that he hasn’t contributed to the company’s programming since 2023.

A prison officer informed the court that he had “refused to attend,” but he was scheduled to show up at the hearing via videolink from jail.

Emmerdale’s James Moore ‘in tears’ as he takes on impressive challenge in tribute to dad

James Moore, the actor from Emmerdale’s Ryan Stocks, has taken on the difficult task of raising money for charity by climbing the top of Scotland’s tallest mountain in honor of his late father.

Emmerdale star James Moore admitted there were “lots of tears” as he completed the gruelling task of climbing the height of Ben Nevis in memory of his dad. The actor, 33, decided to take on the challenge with a team made up of his friends, family and a soap co-star to raise money for Myeloma UK.

His dad Stephen sadly died aged 69 from blood cancer, multiple myeloma, in June this year. According to the NHS, multiple myeloma is a type of blood cancer that affects bones and different parts of the body, which cannot usually be cured.

James, who is best known for playing Ryan Stocks in the soap, climbed 1,345 metres in just one day at a climbing centre in Cheltenham. Explaining how the idea came about, James told us: “My dad passed away this year in June of myeloma, the type of blood cancer. It’s not rare but it is uncommon.

Simply put, I believed there wasn’t enough awareness of it. I donated to the charity Myeloma UK on August, which would have been his 70th birthday. But I believed I could probably do more than that.

He continued, “I’m not a swimmer at all and can’t run very far, but I’ve been really into bouldering and climbing,” so I thought I would do it.

The actor explained what the challenge meant to him by explaining that it “brought us all together” as a result of my family’s participation and friends’ attendance. Along with raising money, it also had a real community component. What we did, in my opinion, would have surprised my father.

James, who was born with ataxic cerebral palsy, described his long-standing, positive relationship with his father Stephen. He has always been very supportive of my career and pushing me to pursue whatever I wanted when I was growing up, whether it was through drama or music, “he said.

He has always been very patient with me and very helpful with issues like disability. removing obstacles and encouraging me to act when I was uncertain.

He had time for everyone, the soap star continued, “That’s it. He had time for everyone.” He had a very kind heart. He was very calming and comforting to be around.

However, James’ challenge didn’t go off without a hit because the climbing team had a power outage when they arrived. He acknowledged that a lamp was placed on a smaller climbing wall before the team could climb the larger walls to get around it.

The team, which also included James’ Emmerdale co-star Ash Palmisciano, who plays Matty Barton, worked out they needed to do 100 climbs of the wall and they managed it in an impressive three and a half hours. James was also battling an injury, having pulled the muscle in his hip just a week before.

He made the final climb, however, and persevered and was honored. James admitted that there were many tears.

I became a little emotional. Thinking about dad and the family both felt something, though. But it was also very rewarding. Being able to handle the emotional side of it was probably the biggest challenge.

James and his wife Sophie are gearing up to celebrate their first wedding anniversary, having tied the knot in a stunning Autumn wedding last November. It has come as a poignant time though, as the couple reflected on James’ dad being there for their big day.

James explained how difficult their first year of marriage has been, explaining that my dad’s passing has made things difficult. The married life itself has been wonderful, Sophie added. He is merely my closest companion. It’s just my best friend and I going through life.

She has been incredibly supportive of everything, James said. giving me constant support and assistance. She is incredible. He teased “I’ve done something, but I can’t tell you what it is right now,” and he also has a secret plan for Sophie on their first wedding anniversary.

The actor said that having 20 minutes of free time with himself and Sophie in a campervan was his favorite memory from their big day. A drive-around was held. Everyone wanted to celebrate with you with you for about 20 minutes, which was really lovely because the day was so busy.

You and your new spouse actually don’t spend a lot of time together. Sophie said seeing James’ parents, brothers, and sisters with her own brother and mother next to them was her favorite moment as she walked down the aisle.

With everything that has happened this year, she said, “That was just such a beautiful day with so much happiness.” James continued, “I’m grateful that I spent that day with his father.”

He also acknowledged that watching his real family and his on-screen family on stage together for the first time was “surreal.” When you watch Emmerdale co-stars dancing with friends they know from a completely different country, you feel like a kind of world-colliding.

The couple has set their sights on Disney World despite having a challenging year ahead of them. They are also working on their lives together because they are preparing to purchase a home and expecting children in the upcoming year.

Sophie shared as James quipped, “I don’t know when but it is coming. That’s part of the plan, wedding, house, and kids.”

James teased that he will be “busy” next year, but he hasn’t been kept quiet about his upcoming Emmerdale plots. When questioned if he planned to leave anytime soon, he responded with a defiant “no.” “I’m still really enjoying it and happy to be there,” he continued. What a crazy thing it has been almost eight years.

Shirley Ballas’ ex fiancé gushes over new flame after ‘vanishing’ from Strictly star

Shirley Ballas, the star of Strictly Come Dancing, reported to the Mirror that her ex-boyfriend Danny Taylor had left him and that their romance had ended.

Strictly Come Dancing head judge Shirley Ballas’ ex fiancé Danny Taylor has thanked his new partner for her support following his heartbreak. The ballroom dancer, 64, dated Danny, 52, for six years before their split.

She confirmed their split last year as she admitted she was grateful to have the love and support of her mother Audrey and her son Mark Ballas.

While performing panto, Shirley and Danny met at the age of 13. Before Danny vanished, the pair fell in love and remained in touch for six years before getting engaged. Later, when Nannette showed up, she appeared as though nothing had happened, leading to Shirley’s decision to end their romance. Her ex-boyfriend Danny is now praised by his 40-year-old new partner Rachel Jones for guiding him through “murky waters.”

He gushed, “Happiest of birthdays to this absolute corker!” and shared a number of photos of Rachel. A generous, compassionate, and hilarious powerhouse who has helped me survive the most difficult and agonizing times I can recall, as well as being a fabulous mother to two smashing boys.

Keep the laughter coming, please! Normster xxxx, big love. When he shared a photo of them together on a June vacation, “Danny publicly confirmed his romance with Rachel.”

His new love came just seven months after he “vanished,” leaving Shirley devastated on her 64th birthday. She had received a text from one of Danny’s relatives expressing concern that he’d gone missing.

Shirley was engulfed by the harrowing thoughts of her brother David who had tragically taken his own life, in 2003, aged 44. The Strictly star frantically tried to hunt Danny down and at 2am she noticed her messages to him were being read.

Her relief turned to anger as Danny reappeared the next day and carried on as if nothing had happened. It was clear she wouldn’t have him in her life anymore as she told the Mirror: “I will never forget that day until the day I die.

“I can remember looking across the room and seeing my mother go through her trauma.” I initially believed that this couldn’t continue. Not just for my sake, but also for my mother.

Shirley told us, “I still loved him, but I thought I couldn’t continue to be a part of.” It’s all very depressing, they say. The pair first pantomized together in 2018.

They quickly fell in love, and Shirley even had wedding rings when the pair got married in 2021. “It was obvious how much I cherished that man,” she said.

She explained, “And he entered my life when I really, really needed it, and he was such a kind person.” What’s the most appropriate way to say this, though?

There were red flags along the line that I chose to ignore, but it just got to the point where the relationship was becoming increasingly difficult for me. Since that time, Shirley and Danny haven’t spoken to one another.

Shirley was engaged to her ex-boyfriend Nigel Tiffany when she was 16 and later wed another ballroom partner Sammy Stopford when she was 18 before their romance.
