Succession star Brian Cox’s powerful U-turn call on adopted kids therapy fund cuts

The acclaimed actor, whose sisters rallied to care for him as a child, is campaigning against cuts to the Adoption and Special Guardianship Support Fund

Enduring the loss of his dad at the age of only eight, Brian Cox is no stranger to childhood hardship. Now the acclaimed actor, whose sisters rallied to care for him as a boy before big-screen fame, is backing a campaign to help vulnerable kids. Succession star Brian has thrown his weight behind a call to reverse cuts to a therapy fund.

The scheme, helping adopted kids and those in kinship care like Brian as a child, has had support for individuals slashed by 40%. Emmy award-winning Brian has added his name to the U-turn call on government cuts to the Adoption and Special Guardianship Support Fund.

One-time Labour supporter Brian, 79, whose mum suffered nervous breakdowns, described the fund as a “special lifeline”. The Scot – who rose from poverty to star in Braveheart, Churchill and the Bourne Identity – is supporting the call after Motherland’s Anne Maxwell Martin’s plea last month. In a powerful video for campaign group, Action Against ASGSF Changes, Brian said: “All children have the right to feel safe, thrive and reach their potential.

“Adopted and kinship children and those under special guardianship orders are no different. The Labour government has cut a vital fund that supported these children. The Adoption and Special Guardianship Support Fund is a lifeline that allows adopted and kinship children and young adults to access specialist assessments and therapy. Therapy that cannot be accessed in any other way. No matter your start in life we have, as a nation, a moral obligation to individuals and society as a whole to ensure that we have the best chances to be happy and healthy.

“I am supporting the urgent call for the government to reverse all cuts made to the ASGSF, conduct an independent and robust consultation with the families and, finally, make the ASGSF a permanent ringfenced fund. I urge you all to support the campaign against the cuts and sign the open letter to the minister for children and families, Josh MacAlister.”

Brian, from Dundee, shared a two-bed flat with his parents and four siblings. He and his brother slept in the living room alcove, he once said. But his dad — who had a grocer’s shop — died and his mum had nervous breakdowns. Brian, whose “traumatised” brother joined the army aged 16, told the Mirror: “I was totally dependent on my three sisters. They looked out for me as much as they looked after me.”

He described his eldest sister, Bette, who died aged 92 in 2023, as “my absolute rock”. Brian said: “She was the one who was Dundee-based… she gave me a key… to my flat where we lived. I used to go home on my own and stuff and then I’d spend a lot of time with her as well. So she was fantastic to me.”

Explaining further where he stayed as a child after his dad’s death and mum’s breakdowns, the actor said: “She [Bette] gave me a key and I would stay in our flat which was still there. Not all the time but I would occasionally go back to the flat and spend the night there, so I had a key to my mother’s flat who wasn’t there. And I also stayed with my youngest sister for quite a lot of the time until she emigrated to Canada, [she]… was also in that flat.”

Asked what his message was to PM Keir Starmer on the therapy fund: “What he should realise is that the fund is so more important because there is much more kinship around now than there is family. And that’s the sad thing about the state of the family. We have to think about kinship because of the crisis that goes on within working-class lives. Because of heroin addiction… because of alcoholism.”

The £50 million 2025-6 Adoption and Special Guardianship Support Fund (ASGSF) pays for therapy, supporting vulnerable children and young people in England. But the government’s changes announced in April cut the per child funding from £5,000 to £3,000 each year – a 40% drop. And the separate £2,500 per child sum for specialist assessments was scrapped. Meanwhile, the ASGSF no longer match-funds support for kids with exceptional need.

Campaigners met with minister MacAlister on Wednesday but came away unimpressed. A spokesperson for Action Against ASGSF Changes said: “The cuts to the ASGSF were made without warning, evidence or consultation. The Minister offered no credible explanation for this, and showed no willingness to engage with the impact of those cuts.”

Alex Scott’s go-to hair curler slashed to £50 ahead of I’m a Celeb appearance

Former Lioness Alex Scott will be heading into the I’m a Celeb jungle on Sunday, and ahead of her appearance, one of her favourite hair styling tools has been slashed to under £50

The 2025 series of I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here is set to kick off tomorrow (Sunday November 16) and the line up has already been announced ahead of the show. Amongst this year’s contestants is former Lioness Alex Scott, who’ll be ditching her signature glamour for camp life as she competes to be crowned this year’s queen of the jungle.

Alex is so well-known for her effortless glam both on and off the pitch that she even previously launched her own haircare edit with Beauty Works . The brand is known for its celeb collabs with the likes of Zara McDermott and Molly-Mae Hague, with Alex’s joining the ranks after it was revealed she regularly used their products to style her hair.

The collection includes clip in extensions and a hair oil, as well as The Professional Styler – a curling wand that’s perfect for recreating Alex’s go-to loose curls and waves. The styling tool has a ceramic-coated wand which features an extra-long barrel that’s perfect for styling long hair, giving you plenty of room to wrap your strands around it. It also has an adjustable temperature that ranges between 80-220°C so you can tailor it for your hair type.

The Professional Styler is usually priced at £70, but it’s currently reduced to £49 on the Beauty Works website ahead of Alex’s I’m a Celeb debut. You can also pick it up with a discount at LookFantastic, where it’s down to £56.

LookFantastic shoppers have also praised the affordable tool, with one saying: “Always curled my hair with straighteners but decided to give these a go with 22 inch hair extensions- oh my god they are amazing! So happy with my purchase – curls look so good.”

Another said: “Amazing curler! My go to for quickly curling my hair. Curls last for a few days (I have silky hair which tends to not hold well).”

Others had less success with The Professional Styler , with one shopper writing: “The curls don’t even last an hour! I have curly hair so my hair usually holds a heated curl well, for days even. I’ve used this multiple times now, I love the look as soon as I’ve finished it but they have all dropped straight and flat before I even get to leave the house. Wouldn’t recommend.”

Another agreed: “This tool is easy to use great if your not that good as curling hair as you only need to wrap hair around the barrel. I just didn’t find my curls last very long and they are inconsistent in shape.”

But others found they worked great, adding: “I got this at a very good discount and I’m so glad I got it! The packaging is lovely and the curls are the best I’ve ever had. It also takes less time due to how big the barrel is.”

Anton Du Beke reveals tell-tale sign that indicates ‘difficulty’ between Strictly pairs

Anton Du Beke, Strictly Come Dancing’s professional-turned-judge, revealed a hidden message he’s spotted in a move by competitors chasing the Glitterball trophy

Strictly Come Dancing judge Anton Du Beke says he knows when a dancing duo have had a “very difficult” week, before they’ve set foot on the dance floor. Having started in the competition as a professional dancer, the 59-year-knows all too well about how the programme operates and how the couples are feeling.

Since becoming a permanent judge in 2021, he says he has spotted certain tell-tale signs that expose how rehearsals have gone for a pair that week.

Praising the show as a family favourite, he told Yours Magazine: “I think that’s the most beautiful thing. It sums Strictly up. It keeps striving and moves with the times in a slightly old-fashioned way. So, long may it continue. The Waltz is always lovely to judge.”

He continued: “You can see how good or bad a couple’s week has been, it makes me laugh. As I sit there, I know exactly what’s been going on. I can see by the routine what sort of week they’ve had.”

And it’s not only on the dance floor where Anton says he can spot the signs. “If they start at the top of the stairs and walk down, they’ve had a very difficult one! They are wasting as much time as they can until they get on the dance floor,” he added.

Throughout his 17 years as a professional dancer on the programme, Anton partnered with numerous famous faces, including Ruth Langsford, Emma Barton and Ann Widdecombe.

The latter remains as one of his most unforgettable partnerships, due to the comedic value and charm it provided.

While the former Conservative MP didn’t claim victory, she stunned viewers with her efforts and eagerness to tackle something entirely beyond her comfort zone.

Looking back on their time together, he revealed to the publication: “When Ann came along, it was a wonderful moment. I was always gentle with my partners, I could not imagine being in a room with someone you don’t get on with, as you’re there for eight hours.

“Dancing with Ann gave me another string to my bow. I could do humour in the choreography, it was brilliant for me.”

Anton frequently makes light of his pairings on the programme, having never claimed the coveted Glitterball trophy.

Previously speaking at the Cheltenham Literature Festival, he quipped: “I say this in the nicest way, but none of them are 25.”

He continued, according to the Daily Mail: “Because they can’t dance, even when they are good, it is awful.”

Meanwhile in the present series, eight couples continue their their battle for the coveted Glitterball trophy.

This weekend, the performers will dance their new routines at the legendary Blackpool Tower Ballroom, in the hope of securing their place for another week.

Last Saturday, Gladiators star Harry Aikines-Aryeetey became the latest celebrity to depart, after the judging panel opted to rescue La Voix in the dance-off.

TOWIE’s Myles Barnett engaged after split from Love Island’s Kady McDermott

TOWIE star Myles Barnett has popped the question to girlfriend Isobel Scarlet Emery during a romantic break to Mexico and posted the happy news on social media

The Only Way Is Essex star Myles Barnett has finally found his happy ever after following his public split from Love Island star, Kady McDermott.

Myles, who became a household name after appearing on the reality TV show between 2017 and 2019, started dating Isobel in 2022, just 11 months after his relationship with Kady broke down.

And while on a romantic holiday in Tulum, Mexico, fans saw an image of Myles on a bended knee asking Isobel to be his wife. The moment was at the top of a jungle canopy at a restaurant famed for its views.

In another picture, the couple appeared to be in the throws of happiness as they kissed. A third picture gave fans a close up of the stunning diamond engagement ring.

The post was captioned saying: “Easiest Yes! Love you forever and always (heart emojis).” And it certainly didn’t take long before friends of the pair and fans rushed to the comment section of the post to congratulate them.

Former TOWIE star Clelia was one of the first to lead the tributes, posting: “Ahhh congratulations guys!!! (heart emoji).”

Myles is no stranger to dating reality TV stars as he first started dating Kady back in 2018 soon after his split with fellow co-star Courtney Green.

And at the time, Courtney’s difficulty in accepting Myles’ new relationship was captured on screen. But his romance with Kady was far from smooth as the pair regularly split, before finally ending things in 2021.

Amid their tumultuous relationship, the former couple bought a renovation project together but Kady recently announced to The Sun that she had been financially able to buy Myles out of his share of the property.

In a chat with The Sun back in February 2022, she revealed: “I just bought my ex out of the house, I’m really happy about that.”

She continued: “I’m finishing renovating that, hopefully to do another project at the end of the year. I’ve got the relaunch on my fitness app at the end of this month so we are doing loads of stuff with that. I’m hoping to travel more this year with Covid settling down.”

Kady is believed to be in a relationship with millionaire boyfriend Harry Simmons after appearing on Love Island for the second time, two years ago.

Holly Willoughby opens up on Strictly Come Dancing rumours with 10-word comment

The 44-year-old former This Morning and Dancing on Ice presenter was carefully diplomatic when asked about the rumour that she coud lbe taking over Claudia Winkleman’s job

TV presenter Holly Willoughby has opened up on the possibility of presenting Strictly Come Dancing with a cryptic comment.

Since the surprise announcement that Claudia Winkleman and Tess Daly are both set to leave the BBC show at the end of this season, fans have been speculating wildly about who might be taking over as the long-running BBC TV show’s presenters.

One name that’s frequently being mentioned in connection with the high-profile job is that of Holly Willoughby. And, according to the Daily Mail’s Richard Eden, the former This Morning presenter has issued a very careful comment on the rumours.

Approached by reporters at the preview night for Winter Wonderland in London’s Hyde Park Holly, 44, coyly commented: “At the moment, I’m just having a lovely time at home watching Strictly.”

Further confirmation of Holly’s potential involvement in the show came from a celebrity hairdresser.

Founded by Hari Salem in 1976, Hari’s West London salon has seen bookings from the likes of Bianca Jagger, Blondie’s Debbie Harry and – according to reports – “a well-known TV channel controller.”

TV producer Peter Fincham let slip that he had heard some inside gossip while getting a trim: “My hairdresser also cuts the hair of a well-known channel controller,” he revealed. “What’s said in Hari’s the hairdresser stays in Hari’s. But he says with great confidence that Holly Willoughby will take over.”

If Holly were to step into Claudia Winkleman’s shoes, then of course the next question would be who would be standing alongside her next September.

This Morning’s Dermot O’Leary, who had been rumoured to have been in contention, has firmly stated that he is not in negotiations – saying that signing up for Strictly would enrage his old X-Factor boss Simon Cowell.

Another presenter with an X-Factor connection, Rylan Clark, has also been tipped for one of the jobs. But Strictly professional Katya Jones is convinced she knows who will be best for the job – former professional dancer and co-star Janette Manrara.

Janette is married to Alijaz Skorjanec, who recently made his return to the ballroom, and she presents It Takes Two alongside Fleur East.

Asked on Loose Women who she’d like to see take over, Katya said: “Naturally for me, it’s Janette Manrara. She’s done it all – she’s done it as a professional, she’s presented It Takes Two. She knows what we’re feeling – she’d be the perfect Claudia, talking it through with us.”

However, Katya refused to rule herself out of contention too: “ I judged Dancing with the Stars in Belgium in the summer, and I really thoroughly enjoyed it. I feel what the contestants are going through and how much work goes into it.
