Inside Anthony Perkins’ life from Psycho ‘curse’ to wife’s tragic 9/11 death

In Netflix’s newest true crime series, Charlie Hunnam portrays Ed Gein, but the late Anthony Perkins was the original Psycho’s lead actor.

Following the release of Monster: The Ed Gein Story, Netflix fans have been revisiting some horror movies that drew inspiration from the killer, including Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho.

Anthony Perkins, a star in the 1960 film, is regarded as one of the best horror movies ever made.

The late actor is well known for his recognizable role, and his family is still a part of Hollywood thanks to Oz Perkins, the film’s director.

Anthony also experienced a lot of difficulties throughout his life, with his son even later describing the role he played as a “curse.”

Was Ed Gein the one who influenced Anthony Perkins’ role in Psycho?

According to Netflix’s Monster: The Ed Gein Story, Norman Bates’ relationship with his mother and the horrific crimes committed by Ed Gein served as inspiration for the book and Psycho adaptation.

Her son built a shrine to his late mother in Augusta Gein’s room after her death by keeping and boarding up the rooms she used.

The director shows Anthony Perkins a recreation of Gein’s home, while Alfred Hitchcock and author Robert Bloch go into great detail about Gein’s crimes in the film.

The Netflix series “tells the story of how one simple man in Plainfield, Wisconsin, became history’s most singular ghoul. He revealed to the world the most horrific truth of all – that monsters aren’t born, they’re made… by us.”

After Norman Bates and Alfred Hitchcock, Anthony Perkins started his acting career.

Anthony Perkins won an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor before making his debut in Psycho.

Anthony reportedly chose to buy out his Paramount contract and relocate to France where he made his European film debut in 1961’s Goodbye Again as a result of the success of the 1960s Psycho.

He made his first appearance in Pretty Poison in 1968 and returned to Hollywood in 1968, where he also co-starred in Catch-22 and Murder on the Orient Express.

Oz Perkins, Anthony’s son, described Anthony’s Psycho role as “a curse” in an interview with Vanity Fair.

He claimed that the Psycho thing was viewed as a lot more of a curse than not in my family’s mythology. At the family gathering, where do you think we all agreed this story was the story?

However, this is a young actor who is incredibly attractive and capable of any role. He performs really well. And he’s doing a matinee idol stunt.

He is a real person who plays cowboys, basketball, and baseball. Girls adore him. Then, because he is so dangerously close to who he actually was, this crucial part of his journey arrives.

He continued, “It’s funny because I find many of my dad’s later performances very stilted and oddly done, while the early stuff is really impeccable.” However, I believe the rock is thrown, and Psycho was the result.

Anthony Perkins’ secret behind-the-scenes conflict

Anthony Perkins achieved enormous success after achieving his Psycho success, but American conservatism forced him to conceal his sexuality throughout his Hollywood career.

The actor previously had relationships with Grover Dale and Tab Hunter, but all of these things were kept secret.

Oz Perkins, Anthony’s son, responded to the Irish Times when asked whether he was surprised to learn these revealing details about his father as an adult. “The surprise was that it was not a surprise. Right ? We hadn’t been talked about it, so it was surprise.

I’m not sure who would speak during that conversation. I’m not sure how that conversation will continue for those whose public spaces don’t permit it, even today. How do children and I interact in that conversation?

“I’m not at fault for anyone,” I assure you. However, I believe a membrane was applied over everything with a gauze. Everyone appeared to be aware of it. All of their friends, undoubtedly. It wasn’t like [top agent] Sue Mengers and [top director] Mike Nichols were like, “Oh, really? ” You’re kidding? ‘”

He added: “It’s such a weird thing because, even in today’s context, it’s not safe to be that way. It’s still not safe to be gay and a movie star unless you’re going to be a ‘gay movie star’.”

wife of Anthony Perkins and tragic passing

In 1973, Anthony Perkins and actress Berry Berenson welcomed two children.

In the 1978 Alan Rudolph film Remember My Name, Berry and Anthony co-starred opposite one another, as well as Jeff Bridges in the 1979 films Winter Kills and Malcolm McDowell in 1982’s Cat People.

The couple remained together until Anthony tragically passed away from pneumonia in 1992 due to the illness.

Tragically, Berry was killed when American Airlines Flight 11 was hijacked and crashed into the World Trade Center’s North Tower nine years later as a passenger on the same plane.

Sons and family legacy of Anthony Perkins

Two sons, Elvis Perkins and Oz Perkins, 51, are surviving the late Anthony Perkins.

In 1983’s Psycho II, Oz began his acting career as a child actor, appearing in films like 2001’s Legally Blonde and Star Trek. He later reprised his roles in the films Star Trek and Legally Blonde.

He is best known for his direction in the past, having directed the likes of Gretel and Hansel in 2020, Longlegs in 2024, and The Monkey in 2025.

Inside Anthony Perkins’ life from Psycho ‘curse’ to wife’s tragic 9/11 death

Charlie Hunnam plays Ed Gein in Netflix’s new true crime series, but it was the late acting icon Anthony Perkins who played the original Psycho.

Following the release of Monster: The Ed Gein Story, Netflix fans have been revisiting some horror movies that drew inspiration from the killer, including Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho.

The 1960 picture, considered to be one of the best horror films ever made, also turned Norman Bates actor Anthony Perkins into a star.

The late actor is remembered well for his iconic role and his family is still a part of Hollywood thanks to his son, actor and director Oz Perkins.

However, Anthony also faced a lot of struggles throughout the course of his life, with his son even later describing his largest role as a “curse”.

Was Anthony Perkins’ role in Psycho inspired by Ed Gein?

Netflix’s Monster: The Ed Gein Story suggests that Ed Gein’s horrific crimes inspired the novel and adaptation of Psycho, as Norman Bates has a similar relationship with his mother that Gein had in real life.

After Augusta Gein’s death, her son preserved and boarded up the rooms she used, making a shrine to his late mother.

In the show, we even see Alfred Hitchcock and author Robert Bloch discussing Gein’s crimes in great detail, with the director showing Anthony Perkins a recreation of Geins’ home.

The Netflix series “tells the story of how one simple man in Plainfield, Wisconsin, became history’s most singular ghoul. He revealed to the world the most horrific truth of all – that monsters aren’t born, they’re made… by us.”

Anthony Perkins’ career after Alfred Hitchcock and Norman Bates

Before appearing in Psycho, Anthony Perkins also starred in the William Wyler movie Friendly Persuasion, which earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

The success of 1960s Psycho arguably led to Anthony being typecast, and the actor chose to buy out his Paramount contract and move to France, where he made his European film debut in 1961’s Goodbye Again.

In 1968, he returned to Hollywood and appeared in Pretty Poison that year, before starring in several critically-acclaimed films including Catch-22 and Murder on the Orient Express.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, Anthony’s son Oz Perkins has described Anthony’s Psycho role as “a curse”.

He said: “In the mythology of my family, the Psycho thing was considered far more of a curse than not. I don’t think we ever had the family meeting where we all decided this was the story.

“But here’s a young actor, an extremely beautiful young man who can play anything. He’s really good. And he’s doing this sort of matinee idol thing.

“He’s playing cowboys and basketball players and baseball players, and he’s real. Girls love him. Then this important part comes his way, which is so kind of dangerously close to who he actually was.”

He added: “It’s funny because I look at a lot of my dad’s later performances and I find them very stilted and kind of strangely done, whereas the early stuff is really so impeccable. But I feel like the rock comes up, the bugs scatter, and that was Psycho.”

Anthony Perkins’ secret behind-scenes struggle

While Anthony Perkins became a huge success following his Psycho fame, American conservatism at the time meant that he was forced to hide his sexuality throughout his Hollywood career.

The star, who later married a woman, previously had relationships with actors Tab Hunter and Grover Dale, but this was all kept under wraps.

Asked whether he was surprised to learn these truths about his father as an adult, Anthony’s son Oz Perkins told the Irish Times: “The surprise about it was that it was no surprise. Right? The surprise was that we hadn’t been talked to about it.

“I don’t know who would have that talk. Maybe, even today, I’m not sure how that conversation goes for people whose public lives don’t allow it. I don’t know how that conversation happens with children.

“I certainly don’t blame anybody. But I do think that a gauze was put over everything – a membrane. Everybody seemed to know it. Certainly all of their friends. It wasn’t like [top agent] Sue Mengers and [top director] Mike Nichols were like: ‘Oh, really? You’re kidding?’”

He added: “It’s such a weird thing because, even in today’s context, it’s not safe to be that way. It’s still not safe to be gay and a movie star unless you’re going to be a ‘gay movie star’.”

Anthony Perkins’ wife and tragic death

Anthony Perkins married his wife, actress Berry Berenson, in 1973 and the pair welcomed two children.

Berry and Anthony starred opposite each other in the 1978 Alan Rudolph film Remember My Name, and she also appeared with Jeff Bridges in 1979’s Winter Kills and Malcolm McDowell in 1982’s Cat People.

The pair remained married until Anthony sadly died from Aids-related pneumonia in 1992.

Tragically, Berry was killed nine years later as a plane passenger during the 9/11 attacks when American Airlines Flight 11 was hijacked and crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center.

Anthony Perkins’ sons and family legacy

The late Anthony Perkins is survived by two sons: Oz Perkins, 51, and Elvis, 49.

Oz began his career as a child actor, playing a younger version of his father’s character Norman Bates in 1983’s Psycho II and later appearing in films like 2001’s Legally Blonde and 2009’s Star Trek.

He is now best known for his work as a director, having helmed such horror films as 2020’s Gretel and Hansel, 2024’s Longlegs and 2025’s The Monkey.

Laura Anderson fires back at claims she stopped ex Gary from seeing daughter Bonnie

Former Love Island star Laura Anderson has taken a public swipe on social media believed to be aimed at her ex Gary Lucy, who she shares daughter Bonnie with

Laura Anderson’s public feud with ex Gary Lucy has been the talking point among many since she gave birth to the couple’s daughter Bonnie, back in 2023. But it seems as though the hatchet is far from being buried as the former Celebs Go Dating star took to social media with another post that appeared to criticise her ex.

Laura, 36, shared a new post on Instagram, writing the cryptic phrase: “I used to tell myself, ‘maybe they’re going through something’. But then I realised…. So was I but I never treated anyone that way.”

She concluded her Instagram post saying: “Don’t let anyone treat you with disrespect. There’s no excuse.” This comes after it was exclusively revealed by the Mirror that Laura had joined forces with the former Hollyoaks actor’s ex wife.

Laura is believed to have “bonded” with Natasha Gray who shares four children with Gary. A source told us last month: “Laura and Natasha have bonded over their experiences with Gary and neither of them has anything nice to say. They don’t see an issue with their friendship. Neither of them are with Gary any more so in their opinion it’s none of his business.”

Following the announcement of Laura’s pregnancy two years ago, it emerged that the couple had decided to split. But they reunited briefly and finally called time on their tumultuous relationship soon after.

It was claimed at the time that Gary had refused to relocate to Scotland as he would be too far from his older children. And a source told The Sun that Natasha had in fact noticed similarities between their experiences with Gary, which has made her realise the trauma Laura was going through.

Their close bond was noticed after Laura posted a snap of Natasha and her children. She wrote: “From one proud hard working mother to another @natasha_v_lucy. We are lucky to call our beautiful babies siblings. You have been and still continue to be my rock. Bonnie and I love you all.”

Last October, Gary was forced to address claims that he was acting like a “deadbeat dad”, a claim made by his ex girlfriend Laura.

Soon after the former couple welcomed their daughter into the world, Laura said she was left disappointed over Gary’s alleged lack of involvement.

Gary had posted a picture of him as the doting father with his son Theodore. And an enraged, Laura wrote: “Instead of posting videos of the one time you saw your daughter this year, can you please reply to my text from 2weeks ago please, that would be great.”

Gary did not respond with a comment, instead he used the power of hashtags to express his opinion. Under his comment that read: “I could eat him all up,” he added “#handsomeboy #deadbeatdad.” This was accompanied by an emoji of a middle finger.

But this is not the only time. Back in June, Laura was asked by a fan if their daughter Bonnie had a relationship with her father. And in response she said: “Do you mean has her daddy seen her…. No he hasn’t since 2nd January if you would like to direct those questions to him as I have no control over the actions of others.”

Beckhams show up to support Victoria’s Paris Fashion Week show as Brooklyn snubs

The Beckham family have come together in support of mum Victoria Beckham’s fashion show in Paris despite Brooklyn Beckham being a no-show to the big family event

This time last year, Victoria and David Beckham’s eldest son Brooklynwas one of her biggest cheerleaders when it came to supporting her fashion shows. But what a difference a year makes as this time, following a well-documented family feud, Brooklyn was nowhere to be seen as the former Spice Girl’s Paris Fashion Week show.

That did not stop the rest of the Beckham clan flocking to Paris to support Victoria as David, sons Romeo and Cruz, along with their youngest child Harper came together and put on a united front. The family were pictured leaving their hotel to head to Victoria’s show.

Covering his 14 year old daughter with an umbrella, David shielded her from the Parisian downpour. Harper stunned the waiting crowds in a salmon pink floor length strapless dress. She completed her look with a delicate necklace and a pair of heels.

Meanwhile, David was seen looking sophisticated in a tailored suit. Romeo and Cruz appeared to exude their mother’s love for embracing fashion as their chosen looks were cutting edge. Cruz stepped out by his girlfriend Jackie Apostel in a T-shirt which read: “You wanna know how it looks.”

Brooklyn has reportedly been feuding with his family members for months. Tension between the once close knit family had become so bad that Brooklyn skipped out on celebrating his dad’s milestone birthday.

But David’s 50th birthday was one of many occasions the aspiring chef and his wife Nicola Peltz snubbed.

Addressing the ongoing drama with his family Brooklyn spoke to the Daily Mail. During his interview he said: “There’s always going to be people saying negative things, but I have a very supportive wife.” He added: “Me and her, we just do our thing, we just keep our heads down and work. And we’re happy.”

Brooklyn continued: “Everyone is always going to say rubbish. I just try and do this, play some golf with some friends.”

His comment was in reference to the celebrity golf event at the Ryder Cup and competed as part of Team Europe.
