Caroline Flack’s heartbroken friends have revealed their “real feelings” for Laura Whitmore taking over her Love Island presenter role.

In December 2019, just months before Caroline’s tragic death, it was revealed that Laura would be taking on the role of host for the ITV2 dating show. Caroline and ITV executives had a difficult conversation about her potential retirement from the show. Following an argument with Lewis Barton, she was charged with assault.

Up until 2022, Laura served as host and was replaced by Maya Jama. Five years after Caroline’s tragic passing, Laura took to Instagram to share screenshots of a Whatsapp conversation with Caroline after she was hired.

However, it was said her decision to share the messages was viewed as ‘ totally unnecessary ‘ by Caroline’s circle.

In 2020 (Dave Benett/Getty Images for EE), Laura assumed the role of Love Island presenter.

Caroline’s friend has revealed that the late star left voice notes for her friends expressing her shock after being revealed as the host and saying she hoped Laura had secured the role and that she was happy for her. Speaking to the Daily Mail, a friend of the star said “it broke Caroline’s heart”.

She clung on in the hope that the charges would be dropped and that she would continue in the end. Laura then began working. It felt awful for Caroline. She had a little bit of experience with Laura, but she didn’t do it well, and she had lost her job. Caroline was furious and desperately upset”, the said.

Caroline informed Laura that she was messaging her on December 18th, 2019 via WhatsApp, and that she hoped Laura got the job. When the news was confirmed, Laura later messaged Caroline saying: “I’ve been offered the role for this series and they’re going to announce it today. As you can imagine, it’s been back and forth over the last few days, so I didn’t have to answer anyone until now, but I wanted to tell you first. I’ll do everything in my power to give it what it deserves. How are you doing? xx”.

Responding with a red love heart emoji, Caroline said: “I’m glad it you xxx”. Laura responded: “That means a lot thank you x”.

Revealing that she had recently retrieved the old messages, Laura penned: “Looking at messages I’ve never publicly shared as they were private messages. They do, in my opinion, add a side to Caroline that makes her special. Hence I’m sharing now”. After sharing the messages, many thanked her for sharing, as Love Island star Laura Anderson added: “Thanks for sharing”.

However, others questioned the decision, as one said: “Why would Laura do that? They were private messages between them, Caroline’s nearest and dearest wouldn’t publicly share private correspondence so why would Laura”? as others slammed it as ‘ poor taste’.
