Canada PM Justin Trudeau’s Liberal Party to elect new leader on March 9

Prior to the 2025 general elections, the party of retiring Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced that it will elect a new leader on March 9.

The initial rules for the upcoming leadership race were discussed and approved by the Liberal Party’s National Board of Directors on Thursday night.

“After a robust and secure nation-wide process, the Liberal Party of Canada will choose a new leader on March 9, and be ready to fight and win the 2025 election”, the party said in a statement late on Thursday.

A new leader will be chosen on the same day as the leadership vote, the party added.

After nine years in power, Trudeau&nbsp announced on Monday that he would step down, bowing under pressure from concerned voters who were alarmed by the party’s miserable performance in pre-election polls.

Till the party chooses a new leader, Trudeau declared that he would remain in office as both the Liberal Party leader and Prime Minister.

The Liberal Party predicts that January 27 will be the deadline to register as a Liberal and cast a ballot in the leadership race.

A candidate needs to pay $350, 000 Canadian dollars ($243, 000) to join the leadership race, it added.

Late on Thursday, The Globe and Mail learned that Mark Carney and former finance minister Chrystia Freeland were vying for the Liberal Party’s leadership.

Despite reports, innovation minister Francois-Philippe Champagne and foreign minister Melanie Joly are reportedly unsure about enlisting.

On Monday, Trudeau announced that the legislature would be suspended until March 24. That implied that an election was unlikely to take place until at least until May.

No matter who wins the party’s leadership, polls indicate that voters will elect the opposition Conservatives&nbsp in a resounding defeat on October 20 for Canadian elections.
