Hip-hop star Stormzy will receive an honorary degree from Cambridge, where he has launched a scholarship program for black students, according to a statement released on Wednesday.
The British grime rapper, Michael Omari Owuo Junior, is credited with earning a Doctorate in Law for his philanthropic work and influence in fields like literature, music, sport, and education, according to Cambridge’s website.
After receiving approval from Regent House, the university’s governing body, Stormzy will receive his honorary diploma. He has 9.5 million monthly Spotify listeners.
The 31-year-old actress has a close relationship with Cambridge.
He launched a program to pay for two black British students’ university studies in 2018 and give them full tuition and living expenses.
According to Cambridge, which claims 55 students have received them overall, it has since grown to provide 12 annual scholarships.
According to the statement, “The “Storzy effect” has been credited with contributing to a rise in applications from Black students to Cambridge in the UK.”
For less lofty reasons, Stormzy made headlines in January when a London judge forbade him from driving for nine months after being found using a phone while driving a Rolls-Royce.
