Calandagan wins horse of the year award

At the Cartier Racing Awards in London, Calandagan has won the title of horse of the year.

The four-year-old, trained by Francis-Henri Graffard in France, won three of Ascot’s top-tier Group One races, including the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes and the Champion Stakes.

He is the only horse to win both competitions in a single season, aside from Brigadier Gerard (1972).

Calandagan, who colors the Aga Khan, also placed second in the Coronation Cup and Dubai Sheema Classic, which were his previous accomplishments.

Ombudsman, the winner of the Prince of Wales’ Stakes and Juddmonte International, and the leading three-year-olds Delacroix and Minnie Hauk, both received main awards.

Following four victories this year, including the Gold Cup at Ascot, Trawlerman, trained by John and Thady Gosden, was named the top stayer at the 35th annual awards.
