At a meeting of the executive committee in Accra on Saturday, Moroccan Fouzi Lekjaa was elected as the CAF’s first vice-president.

His choice will be widely acclaimed on the continent because of the 54-year-old’s successful record in Morocco, particularly in terms of building football infrastructure.

He is a member of the FIFA Council, the highest body in the world, which is located close to Algeria’s border. He was born in Berkane, the eastern city.

Lekjaa previously served as the CAF’s vice-president from 2017, but he was not reelected several years later. He plays both football and senior civil service positions in Morocco.

According to many African officials, Patrice Motsepe, the current head of the African Football Federation, might be the country’s president.

The 63-year-old billionaire won a second four-year term as the head of African football, winning unopposed. In 2021, Motsepe was also chosen by acclamation.

There are three terms that CAF presidents can serve. Before being removed in 2017, Cameroonian Issa Hayatou led the CAF for 29 years.

Ghanaian Kurt Okraku, Pierre-Alain Mounguengui, Congolese Bestine Ditabala, and Mozambican Feizal Sidat were the four new vice-presidents chosen.

Former Cameroon star Samuel Eto’o, who was elected to the CAF executive committee last month, was one of the candidates who were unable to attend.

The 44-year-old forward had long-term contracts with clubs like Barcelona, Inter Milan, and Chelsea, where he scored an all-time high 18 goals at Africa Cup of Nations competitions.

Before retiring, Eto’o was voted African Footballer of the Year four times, an unprecedented four times. Four years ago, he presided over the national football team in Cameroon.
