The House of Representatives has passed a bill that will end the discrimination and dichotomy between holders of bachelor’s degrees and higher national diplomas (HND).
The bill sought to replace HND with Bachelor of Tech, according to the speaker, Tajudeen Abbas, so that polytechnic graduates could compete favorably with other university graduates.
The bill, which was supported by a member of Lagos State, also stressed the value of technical education.

Speaker Abbas remarked that the only way to replace the HND is with a Bachelor of Technology, so that at least polytechnics graduates can compete with those from universities.

They are also calling for “hybrid supervision,” where the NUC (National Universities Commission) will handle the degree component of the polytechnic education, while the NBTE (National Board for Technical Education) will continue to handle the national diploma.
They argued that the requirement to be rector should also be upgraded to a Ph because of the degree component of this amendment. Since you will be addressing degree programs right now, having a PhD is at the very least required for such a type of establishment. He claimed that D was in charge of the institution.
