Following the spread of his cancer, Joe Saumarez Smith announced on Thursday that he would no longer serve as the chairman of the British Horseracing Authority (BHA).
The 53-year-old made the decision, which takes immediate effect, after his lung cancer spread to his brain.
He underwent treatment after being first diagnosed with cancer in 2023. He continued in his position.
He said, “I’ve been told that my lifespan is fairly short, and I think it would be unfair to horseracing if I didn’t give it back right away.”
“I’ve loved playing a sport I’ve loved since I was eight years old,” I said in a statement.
until Lord Charles Allen’s formal transition on June 1st, Director David Jones will serve as interim chair.
If questions were raised about whether the cancer had harmed my abilities, “I did not want to stay on and make decisions that were potentially up for later challenge,” Saumarez Smith said.
