Ex: I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here! and Louise Minchin, a host of BBC Breakfast guests, said the “significant moment” in her family’s history has sparked new forms of grief.
Former BBC Breakfast presenter Louise Minchin has opened up about a bittersweet chapter in her family life, that many parents can relate to. The 56-year-old said she was feeling an “impending loss bearing down on me” after her youngest daughter, Scarlett, recently flew the nest.
Six years prior, when Louise’s eldest daughter Mia left her at home to pursue a university, she felt the same way. She revealed that when I opened her bedroom door, I felt my heart ache when I saw her bed made and the floor clear.
Who would have known that I would miss both her mess and hers? I woke up with what I thought was a dull sense of grief pressing on my chest for weeks because a vacuum had opened in my life that I couldn’t fill.
Louise said she is still adjusting to what she described as “a significant moment” that brings bittersweet feelings as both of her children are away from the family home. She expressed joy in seeing them “fully fledged adults with homes of their own” despite her sadness over their departure.
In her column for Platinum magazine, she continued, “I’m lucky that they feel free to do that.” Louise said she has set dates in her daughters’ calendars for some quality time together, including a trip to Tuscany, to help her through this chapter.
Louise claimed the three had some “difficult conversations” that they “wouldn’t have touched on during snatched moments at home” while embracing this time together.
The presenter and author realized right away that her role as a mother had changed from “practical support” to “psychological support.” Louise added that she has realized it’s time to enjoy her newfound freedom after making the most of her communication with her daughters through texts and calls.
She continued, “I have to be content with that as long as they keep in touch, and in the meantime, enjoy my own life, remembering that they might be back at any time,” she continued.
Louise shares her two daughters with her long-term husband David, who she married in 1998. The former I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! star is best known for previously fronting BBC Breakfast for 20 years.
In 2021, Louise left the show because she couldn’t put in such “utterly gruelling” hours. The mother-of-two had to set her alarm for 3.40am, which she acknowledged had a toll on her lifestyle, to be ready on the red sofa for 6am three days a week.
She previously stated to The Times, “The hours are horrific, completely, completely gruelling, and it affects every aspect of your life, whether it be when you eat, sleep, or how you feel.” I had already done what I wanted to do, and I absolutely loved it.
