Juan Ayuso, a Spaniard, regained his complacency on stage seven of the Vuelta a Espana after battling with his issues in the Pyrenees the day before.
Ayuso (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) competed against favorite Jonas Vingegaard in the final climb of the first mountain stage of the race on Thursday, but he was dropped on the final climb.
The 22-year-old won his first individual Vuelta stage on Friday, which started at Andorra la Vella and finished at Cerler. He then turned in his best on the 188km stretch, which started at Andorra la Vella and finished at Cerler.
Ayuso praised the achievement of winning a stage in the Vuelta, which is my favorite race, after the Giro, when I won my first Grand Tour stage.
I’m very proud of my victory in the race, and I’ll remember it forever.
Marco Frigo of Italy (Israel-Premier Tech) came in second place in a minute 15 seconds, while Raul Garcia Pierna of Spain (Arkea-B&, B Hotels) came in third.
After battling back, Norway’s Torsten Traeen (Bahrain Victorious) and Vingegaard (Visma–Lease a Bike) finished in second place.
Vingegaard, a two-time Tour de France champion from Denmark, is still 2 minutes 33 seconds behind Traeen.
Ayuso, who won the stage competition in 2022 and finished fourth the following year, is almost seven and a half minutes behind Traeen.
We didn’t want to leave, Vingegaard said, and it wasn’t an easy day. We decided not to do anything today because we wanted to still try to save some energy.
