Grand Prix of Saudi Arabia

Jeddah Dates: 18-20 April Start time for the race: 18:00 BST on Sunday

Lando Norris says he is “on the right track” for the Grand Prix of Saudi Arabia after setting the pace in Friday practice.

The Briton led teammate Oscar Piastri by 0.16 seconds on a day that was hampered by a Yuki Tsunoda crash.

At the end of the second session, the Japanese, who had previously raced in two races this season, clipped the inside wall and was thrown into the wall on the outside.

McLaren once more appeared to have an edge over the competition: Max Verstappen from Red Bull finished the day third fastest, at least on one-lap pace, 0.280secs ahead of Norris’ best.

Despite leading the championship by three points from Piastri heading into the fifth race of the season, Norris has acknowledged that he hasn’t felt comfortable driving the new McLaren since the start of the season.

He claimed he had been working hard to improve his confidence while driving on the fast-paced Jeddah street track.

A respectable first day, Norris declared. Because of how fast it moves, how many walls, and how many near-misses it causes, everything feels chaotic around here.

“Today, I’ve been working more on myself and my driving than probably on the car.” gaining more self-assurance.

“A good place to start, productive, and empowering. On the right path, from what I wanted to learn today.

We are confident, in my opinion, but the rest are not far behind. I had hoped for a bigger gap than it did today, probably. We are quick, after all. We are confident in our vehicle. Not as cozy as we would like.

Piastri once said, “I’ve been feeling pretty good and the car is moving.” I’ve made a few cuts, which I need to make better use of tomorrow.

Verstappen finished third overall, but the Dutchman was behind Ferrari and Mercedes in terms of race pace both during the first and second sessions.

The four-time champion said, “We tried some different things, trying to find maybe a different direction, and we came away with a lot.”

Still, not where I wanted to be. You have to move away from what you feel in the car, I don’t really look at the gaps. Although it is slightly better over a lap, our long runs were still very challenging.

Leclerc finished the day 0.48 seconds slower than Norris, but he did not finish the day with a clean lap on the day’s quickest soft tires.

The championship leaders’ advantage appeared bigger than ever at any race this season, despite the fact that he and Russell appeared the closest thing to a McLarens’ challenge on a race run.

A challenging day, Leclerc declared. It’s a very difficult track, and at best, one’s confidence must be very high.

We changed a lot about the car, but it turned out to be very positive because I learned a lot. I believe that once we adjust the window, the vehicle will experience a little more performance.

Lewis Hamilton, a teammate, however, acknowledged his difficulties. The seven-time champion was 13th place, 0. 622 seconds slower than Leclerc, and eighth fastest, 5 places, and 0. 506 seconds behind in the first session.

Hamilton called him “not the greatest.” Our main concern was getting the tires to work today.

“Sunday usually goes backwards, but there isn’t much going backwards for me to leave.”

“The car needs to be improved. A few times throughout the session, the soft tyre didn’t appear until the soft tyre is reached. Tonight, we’ll make some adjustments, and we’ll probably come back stronger tomorrow.

The late in the second session race simulation runs were halted by Tsunoda’s crash.

The left-front track-rod was damaged when he first struck the wall, which caused the car to crash into the outside wall, where the front right also suffered damage.

Allies say Ghannouchi ‘unjustly’ held, as he marks 2 years in Tunisian jail

An international committee established last year to raise awareness of Rached Ghannouchi’s imprisonment claims he is being held “unjustly” and on “trumped-up charges” in honor of the second anniversary of his arrest.

The former Tunisian parliament speaker and former leader of the Ennahdha party was imprisoned and ordered by the International Committee for Solidarity with Rached Ghannouchi to release him immediately.

More than 15 cases against Ghannouchi have been brought forward, according to a statement released on Thursday, and “several unjust convictions and sentences have been sentenced.”

The committee said that the most recent of these was a 22-year prison sentence that was handed down in February on charges of plotting against state security. “He has no connection to this case,” the committee said.

Ghannouchi was given a three-year sentence earlier this year for making allegations that his party received foreign contributions.

The 83-year-old, who has been the country’s president’s main rival, was detained in April 2023 and given a one-year prison sentence on suspicion of incitement.

He has spoken out against Saied frequently and became the most well-known person to be detained as part of the president’s ongoing consolidation of power. He was elected in 2019 and has overseen a wave of legal reforms and repression that grew his rule.

The committee stated in its statement that “these unjust trials and sentences occur within the context of a widespread repressive campaign led by Kais Saied’s regime, which targets opposition voices from all backgrounds, represses organized action in all its forms, controls the media and civil society, and silences critical voices.”

Saied’s government must “exploit the judiciary as a tool for settling political scores,” it said.

An era of political prisoners

Human Rights Watch (HRW) called on Tunisian government to halt its crackdown on opposition and release all detainees just days prior to the committee’s statement.

In Tunisia, Ghannouchi is being tried on conspiracy charges in the wake of the trial of prominent opposition figures, according to the rights group.

HRW’s report, which was released on Wednesday, reinforced the concerns of opposition leaders over Saied’s authoritarian rule, which was established when he dissolved parliament in 2021 and became legally able to rule by decree.

Saied’s action was deemed a coup by the opposition. He has refuted these accusations, claiming instead that he is attempting to end the country’s political unrest and widespread corruption.

According to the report, Tunis had transformed arbitrary detention into a framework for repressive measures.

Bassam Khawaja, HRW’s deputy director for Middle East and North Africa, said, “Said’s government has returned the country to a time of political prisoners, robbing Tunisians of hard-won civil liberties.”

Shock as 200-1 Heavenly Heather wins at Newcastle

Media PA

Heavenly Heather, a 200-1 outsider, won in a major horse racing shock on Good Friday in Newcastle.

The filly is the joint highest-priced winner in British Flat racing history and was trained by Tracey Waggott at her stables close to Durham.

On All Weather Finals Day, Heavenly Heather, ridden by Amie Waugh, won the Fillies and Mares Championships Handicap.

In each of her previous five starts, the horse had lost.

Waggott said, “We always knew she was a really good horse.” Simply put, it was sufficient to get her in shape. She puts a lot of effort into getting fit because she’s such a big, heavy mare.

Before she passed away a year ago, Chris Rain, a part-owner, claimed his mother had given him the name Heavenly Heather.

Equinoctial, who won over hurdles at Kelso in November 1990, was the longest-priced winner in British racing history. Equinoctial made the 250-1 start.

O’Sullivan to overcome ‘stage fright’ to face Carter at Crucible

Halo World Championship

Venue: Crucible Theatre, Sheffield Dates: 19 April to 5 May

Seven-time winner Ronnie O’Sullivan says he will overcome “stage fright” to take on Ali Carter in the first round of the World Snooker Championship.

O’Sullivan, 49, who only confirmed his participation on Thursday, has not played competitively since snapping his cue at the Championship League in January.

“Because it is the World Championship and the last tournament [of the season] I thought I need to try and break that cycle,” he told BBC Sport.

“Call it stage fright, I just haven’t had the [will] to go and compete. Call it lost my bottle. You sometimes lose your nerve. Just to come here is an achievement for me.

“The kind of nerves I have [been] feeling off and on for the last two years have not been good nerves. I have just been not wanting to go out there – sometimes struggling to even take my eyes off the floor. The confidence has been draining away, so it has not been a great place to be.”

Next Tuesday’s meeting with Carter, who at 18th in the world is the highest ranked qualifier, is a repeat of the 2008 and 2012 Crucible finals, which were both won by ‘The Rocket’.

The pair also contested a Masters final in 2024, which O’Sullivan triumphed in, but there were genuine fears that he would not go for a record eighth world title in the modern era this year having been an ever-present at the sport’s showpiece event since turning professional in 1992.

He pulled out of the Masters at Alexandra Palace on medical grounds, missed the German Masters in Berlin and apologised to fans after electing not to play at the Welsh Open.

He also withdrew from the World Grand Prix in Hong Kong in March and has not played in anything over a best-of-seven match since his first-round loss to Barry Hawkins at the UK Championship in November.

“Ali is a really good match player and I will have to play better than I have been just to give him a game,” added O’Sullivan.

“I really have nothing to lose. I have done well to just get here to be honest. If it was any other tournament I probably wouldn’t have come.

“I don’t know how excited I am because the reason I stopped was because my game was suffering and I wasn’t getting anything from it. Not much has changed but I thought at some point I have to try and play.

O’Sullivan not ready to retire

In the build-up to the 17-day tournament, O’Sullivan said that he received “a proper good hiding” while practising with world number 11 Barry Hawkins.

However, recent footage of him constructing a maximum 147 break in less than seven minutes in practice suggests he is acclimatising well to a new cue.

“It is the second time I broke my cue. The first time was a similar situation, I was struggling for maybe a year or two and you just get tired in the end and so frustrated,” O’Sullivan added.

“That was kind of like the end of my tether. Obviously regretted it but that is how the game got me.”

O’Sullivan, who has won a record 41 ranking titles, also outlined that he is not ready to pack away his cue just yet.

“I’d like to do another two or three years playing so the aim is to try and just focus on this event,” he continued.

Selby supportive of O’Sullivan’s stance

O’Sullivan has previously stressed that he has had to take medication to deal with anxiety and also had a candid studio discussion on TNT Sports with Mark Selby earlier this season around the mental health pressures faced by snooker players.

That prompted some debate around the potential for players to be offered a counsellor at tournaments to help them deal with issues.

And four-time world champion Selby, who has had well-documented struggles of his own to contend with, believes that service would be a valuable addition to the professional tour.

“I don’t think we have carried on and progressed with it but I think something definitely needs to happen,” Selby told BBC Sport.

“Ronnie hit the nail on the head. There are probably a lot more players on the tour going through it than you think that just don’t speak out or feel strong enough to speak out.

“If you had someone like that there, who you could go in a room with for 20 minutes or half an hour to speak to, a neutral person, to get things off your chest, it would be a great addition to the tour for all the players. You would definitely use it for sure.”

Selby, 41, also believes that O’Sullivan did the right thing by taking some time away from snooker.

“He obviously wasn’t in the greatest place to miss all these tournaments. He must be suffering a lot off the table. If I look back at how I was last year going into the World Championship, if I was in the same position now coming in as I was 12 months ago, there is no way I would be playing.

“I would pull out and I have learnt from that, and know if I am in the same position I won’t make that mistake again.

“He’s definitely done the right thing. At the end of the day it is a game of snooker and you have to put yourself first and be selfish.

Celeb Big Brother’s Tiffany Pollard slammed after ‘fat shaming’ Donna Preston

Celebrity Big Brother fans have been left far from impressed by comments made by former contestant Tiffany Pollard on the ITV reality show’s spin-off, Late & live

Celebrity Big Brother star Tiffany Pollard has found herself in hot water over her latest comments. The New York-native reality TV star, 43, has been a regular guest on the ITV spin-off show, Late & Live. However, her outlandish behaviour has led to complaints.

Tiffany hasn’t held back with her views of this year’s contestants, often giving controversial opinions. And it’s two in particular that have caused viewers to share their discontent with the show’s big bosses.

Tiffany, who is best known for appearing on Flavor of Love with Flavor Flav, was pulled up for her comments regarding housemates Jack P Shepherd and Donna Preston. During her appearance, she said: “But she [Donna] knows how to order a cheese pizza!” She went on to call Donna “plus size.”

Host AJ Odudu furiously hit back: “So what?” Tiffany replied: “Because she’s plus sized, she’d know how to order my dinner!” Meanwhile, co-host Will Best commented: “We want her there because she is very funny and I personally think she’s a great housemate.”

The comments have not gone down well with viewers who flocked to social media to share their views. One user on X, formerly known as Twitter, shared a complaint email they had sent to ITV.

It read: “For the second night in a row since ‘Tiffany’ has been on the Celebrity Big Brother Late and Live show, I have found her vocabulary completely inappropriate. 15th April she referred to Donna as ‘plus size’ in a derogatory manner. 16th April she referenced size of a man’s penis.”

The user’s complaint went on: “This is completely unacceptable and she should be removed from the panel and a formal apology made by ITV. I look forward to your response.”

She wasn’t the only person hitting out at Tiffany’s language either. Another user wrote online: “Did that Tiffany just fat shame that audience member how is this allowed.”

When another user replied to say Tiffany had also made a comment about Donna, the original poster said: “Absolutely disgusting how she’s getting away with it.”

Another post read: “I have no idea why people seem to love Tiffany Pollard, she seems like a loud vile human being. Fat shaming someone but can some how get away with it because she just shouts at everyone.” ITV has a viewer services FAQs page readily available on their site to help with anyone who has an issue with any lines on any of their shows.

Earlier in the week, Tiffany also appeared on This Morning. During her segment, she made a brutal dig about Gemma Collins’ weight, leaving the hosts stunned as she reignited her feud with the former TOWIE star. The duo had appeared on 2016’s version of Celebrity Big Brother together.

During Tiffany’s chat with Alison Hammond and Dermot O’Leary, talk turned to her own time in the house and her feud with Gemma. The pair seemed firm friends at first before things turned sour. Discussing an incident from their time in the house regarding shoes, Tiffany stunned the hosts as she made a swipe at Gemma’s weight.

She said: “I was like ‘Honey I would’ve given you those shoes back’ because her big everything knocked stones out of those shoes. I did look at those shoes and examine them, they were missing so many diamonds girl she could’ve kept them.”

Alison then asked: “Are you friends now? Have you made up? Do you DM each other?” Tiffany admitted: “We will never be that close Alison but what she did say when I left the house, she said ‘Well done.'”

Barcelona vs Celta Vigo – LaLiga preview: Team news, how to follow, stream

Who: Celta Vigo vs. Barcelona
What: Spanish LaLiga
Where: Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys, Barcelona, Spain
When: Saturday at 4:15pm (14:15 GMT)

Follow Al Jazeera Sport’s live text and photo commentary stream.

When Celta Vigo hosts Barcelona on Saturday, they will try to increase their lead to seven points.

Real Madrid, the defending champion, is second in the table, but they won’t play until Sunday when they face Athletic Club.

The leaders of the league are not happy with the way their matches are scheduled in the top flight of Spain, which they have been chasing quadruple this year.

What causes Barcelona’s outrage?

Hansi Flick, the coach of Barcelona, demanded to meet with LaLiga officials over the “joke” schedule, alleging that Spanish football was neglecting its players.

After being changed from an afternoon start on May 4, the Catalan giants’ LaLiga game will begin at 9:00 PM (19:00 GMT) at Real Valladolid on May 3.

Even with that change, they still have less than three days to get ready for the crucial Champions League semifinal return match against Inter Milan on May 6.

“I want to see the person who is in charge of that.” It’s a joke, Flick said at a news conference on Friday.

The men who are in charge of that have no time to rest, and I want to talk with them because they have no idea how it is, are unbelievable and have no idea how it is.

What is it that Barcelona can still win this year?

One of the three competitions in which Barcelona are still competing is the Champions League, which Flick is familiar with after a trophy-filled spell at Bayern Munich, which raises issues related to fixture congestion.

The German manager, however, claimed he was speechless as a result of the team’s situation before a significant European game.

“This was the first time I had this.” When a champion league team plays, especially in the semifinals, he said, “every league protects its clubs.”

Bundesliga “take care of the clubs,” according to Premier League. But not here. Simply put, let them play.

In Saudi Arabia, Barcelona defeated fierce rivals Real 5-2 to win the Spanish Super Cup earlier this year.

What does Barcelona’s form book look like?

Barcelona are looking to rebound from their first defeat of 2025 following a 3-1 defeat at Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday in the Champions League quarterfinals, despite being able to advance to the semi-finals 5-3 on aggregate.

In LaLiga, how are Celta Vigo fares?

Flick praised their 37-year-old coach Claudio Giraldez, who came in this year and helped the team that finished its previous three campaigns in the bottom half. Celta Vigo are seventh in the standings, chasing European football.

Flick claimed that he has the highest regard for his work because he has led a great team and that it is unrelated to his age.

“Celta are very brave in their build-up, and they have a clear idea of how they want to play.”

It’s crucial for us to show our strengths, perhaps in addition to what Dortmund showed us. We discussed the circumstances surrounding our meeting in Dortmund, and we must improve tomorrow. They enjoy playing away games as well.

Head-to-head

The clubs meet for their 58th meeting, with Celta winning 13 and Barcelona winning 28.

In their final three games, Barca have won all three of their matches, with the only other defeat coming in one of the last six.

When did Celta Vigo and Barcelona last meet?

With only six minutes left in normal time, Barca held a 2-0 lead over Celta in their LaLiga match in November.

Barca scored two goals with Raphinha and Robert Lewandowski, but Alfon Gonzalez and Hugo Alvarez scored for Celta, who were awarded a 2-2 draw after Marc Casado was sent off in the 82nd minute.
