Monty Don has shared a hidden tribute to his much-loved dog Ned as he unveiled his Chelsea Flower Show garden. The Gardeners’ World presenter has consistently surrounded himself with canines over the years, with Ned joining in his show.

The golden retriever has become a familiar face alongside Monty as he embraces his green thumb and gives gardening tips. Monty is using his love of greenery at this year’s Chelsea Flower Show and designed his very own garden.

His creation will be on full display for the flocks of crowds, including the royals, as they attend the five-day show next month. However, this year, Monty has broken the moUld with his design as the garden pays tribute to Ned.

They have made their designer duo debut for the event hosted by the Royal Horticultural Society. Monty and gardener Jamie Butterworth are the brains behind the design of the ‘dog garden’.

Visitors to the Royal Hospital Chelsea grounds will be able to walk though winding pathways and shady spots that have been inspired by Ned’s love of outdoor spaces.

The unique design saw Ned let loose along with dogs owned by gardener Jamie and RHS director-general Clare Matterson, to sniff out routes and explore the garden.

Monty told The Times: “We’ve been observing the way that they move around among the plants in order to plan out the paths. It didn’t actually go according to our expectations, which is good, because it meant that we had to rethink.”

He added: “You have this sort of branching, curving system, which neither Jamie or I would have really thought out. We would have made it much more sort of maze-y, like one’s idea of a snake’s passage.”

The garden is also dog friendly, which was at the top of Monty’s priority list. It features lots of trees and shrubs to create shady areas for dogs to cool down in in warm weather.

He also made sure there was a stream for them to splash about in and drink from and the lawn will be left long for them to roll around in. There is a dog friendly sofa, leads and balls.

For years, Monty has proudly proclaimed his adoration for dogs. On his website, he writes: “I have lived with dogs all my life and so it is absolutely natural to me that wherever I am in the garden I should be accompanied by a dog or two. It is their garden as much as mine or any other members of the family.

“Something that I take for granted is that, by and large, they do absolutely no damage and respect the garden completely. They (rarely) dig holes or crash through the flower beds. They do treat the long paths as bowling alleys down which they career in chase of the ball that we are obliged to throw, but it is harmless enough.”

The presenter’s late dog Nigel, also a golden retriever, became an unexpected star, attracting fan mail and even inspiring fan accounts on social media during his regular appearances on BBC Two’s Gardeners’ World.

His sudden death from violent seizures in 2020 left Monty heartbroken. Three years after Nigel’s passing, Monty had to bid farewell to his other cherished golden retriever Nell, who died of cancer.

Victoria and David Beckham’s son Romeo has gushed over his six-month anniversary with his girlfriend Kim Turnbull amid rumours that he is no longer on speaking terms with his brother, Brooklyn

Romeo Beckham is celebrating six months with his girlfriend Kim Turnbull amid his ongoing feud with his older brother Brooklyn. Taking to his Instagram stories on Thursday, Romeo, 22, marked his six-month anniversary with Kim, 24, who has previously dated Brooklyn, 26.

Posting a loved-up photo of the pair on a recent holiday while lounging in the sunshine, smitten Romeo wrote: “Six months around the sun with this beautiful soul.” Romeo’s post comes amid rumours that he and Brooklyn are no longer on speaking terms and sources have suggested that it’s all down to the fact that Romeo is now dating his brother’s ex-girlfriend.

The rumours began to swirl after Brooklyn and his wife, Nicola Peltz-Beckham were absent at David’s early 50th birthday celebration in Miami earlier this month. Meanwhile, Cruz, 20, and daughter Harper Seven, 13, were in attendance, along with Romeo and his current girlfriend Kim.

After the event, Romeo shared some pictures to Instagram, captioning the upload: “Family is everything.” He tagged most of his family, but left out Brooklyn and Nicola, leaving fans wondering if there’s tensions bubbling within the usually close-knit Beckham clan.

Sources told TMZ that Romeo’s relationship with Kim is playing its part in the siblings falling out. The publication states that Brooklyn reportedly had a romantic connection with Kim years ago, while Romeo and Kim went public at the end of 2024.

However, the outlet quoted a source as saying “that’s all water under the bridge.” With Brooklyn now happily married to Nicola, sources said “the issue at hand is the couple questions whether Kim has the right intentions in dating Romeo”.

Romeo’s girlfriend Kim has many skills, and primarily works as a model and DJ. The latter isn’t surprising as she comes from a musical family – her dad Alex Turnbull is the founder of UK hip hop label Ronin Records, and is well respected in the music industry.

She has also collaborated with several fashion brands, including Tommy Hilfiger, and her Instagram page is full of her attending glitzy events, with and without her famous boyfriend. On Valentine’s Day, Romeo posted a gushing social media post about his partner. In the social post, Romeo shared a number of snaps, adding: “I love you so much” and a white love heart emoji.

Someone else who “loves” her is Victoria herself. She is said to be pleased with the match, and reportedly thinks it’s beneficial that Kim has previously dated Madonna’s son – and friend of Brooklyn – Rocco Ritchie.

Sadly for Cruz’s girlfriend Jackie Apostel, 30, VB isn’t believed to be as overly enthusiastic. A source told the Mirror: “Although Victoria is pleased that Cruz seems happy in his relationship, she does have some concerns about the age gap and whether her youngest son is ready for that kind of commitment.

“She really likes Jackie, and Jackie seems to get on with all the family but Victoria would be lying if she said that her being 10 years older than Cruz isn’t a worry. Cruz is still a teenager whereas Jackie is a fully grown woman who is at a different stage in her life and may want things that Cruz is not quite ready for.”

150 Million Nigerians Now Have Access To Adequate Electricity – Adelabu

The Minister of Power, Adedayo Adelabu, has disclosed that approximately 150 million Nigerians now have access to adequate electricity, while 80 million still lack reliable power.

He made this known on Thursday during the 2025 Ministerial Sectoral Update Conference held in Abuja, where he spoke alongside the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Malagi, and other key stakeholders.

Adelabu stated that the progress stems from Nigeria’s participation in the “Mission 300” initiative—an ambitious joint effort by the World Bank and the African Development Bank (AfDB) aimed at providing electricity access to 300 million Africans by 2030.

“The compact sets ambitious goals to enhance electricity access, increase renewable energy adoption, and improve clean cooking solutions for millions of Nigerians — that is Mission 300, and we are making good progress on this,” he said.

He continued, “I’m happy to tell you that out of the 300 million Africans that the World Bank and AfDB aim to reach, Nigeria is on course to account for no less than 25 per cent, which translates to about 75 million Nigerians. When we presented our compact, they agreed with us.”

According to Adelabu, Nigeria, with a population of over 240 million, currently provides adequate electricity access to 150 million people. However, he emphasised that the issue is not merely access but the ‘reliability’ of that access.

“As it is today, Nigeria—a country with about 240 million people—has access for 150 million people already, while about 80 million lack access to adequate electricity in Nigeria.

“The real challenge lies in the stability and affordability of electricity. That’s how we measure reliability. We must ensure that those who have access enjoy consistent and affordable power,” he said.

The minister urged global financiers to prioritise strengthening Nigeria’s power grid alongside off-grid solutions, warning that over-reliance on renewables risks leaving urban areas and industries behind.

“When you’re extending access to the 300 million people under this initiative, let’s not concentrate solely on renewable energy—which is more appropriate for rural communities.

“Strengthening grid infrastructure is equally crucial so that those connected to the grid can enjoy reliable power. Otherwise, how do we explain the growing number of Nigerian companies opting out of the national grid to generate captive power?”

Ambitious Generation Targets

The minister also highlighted recent improvements in Nigeria’s power generation capacity.

“We have increased our generation to 6,003 megawatts, up by 1,700 megawatts in one and a half years since President Tinubu assumed office. It took Nigeria over 40 years to achieve an incremental 2,000 megawatts of average energy; we achieved this in less than two years. Past administrations have their positives, but if they had been adding at least 1,000 megawatts of power since 1999, we would be talking about 26,000 megawatts and more in Nigeria.

“Now that we (the current administration) have created the trajectory, if we can sustain it, I can assure you that before the end of this administration’s first term in 2027, we should be able to generate and distribute nothing less than 8,000 megawatts of power.” Adelabu declared.

He also announced that the Kaduna Power Plant would become operational before the end of 2025.

On metering challenges, Adelabu assured Nigerians that “the metering gap will soon be a thing of history.”

Tariff Reforms, Financial Strain

Addressing the sector’s financial framework, Adelabu noted that electricity tariff reforms implemented had yielded an increase of ₦700 billion in revenue.

In April 2024, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) approved a tariff increase for Band A customers—those receiving a minimum of 20 hours of electricity daily—from ₦68 to ₦225 per kilowatt-hour. This 230% hike affected roughly 1.9 million consumers.

The government had previously explained that the hike was necessary due to the unsustainability of energy subsidies, which were projected to cost ₦2.9 trillion in 2024. Even with the increase, ₦2.8 trillion was still budgeted for electricity subsidies that year. NERC estimated that the tariff adjustment would reduce subsidy obligations by ₦1.14 trillion.

However, the move has drawn criticism. The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) called it “an additional burden on already struggling citizens.” The Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry similarly expressed concerns about the impact on Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), citing increased operating costs.

Grid Collapse, Alternative Solutions

National Grid Successfully Restored After Collapse – TCN
A file photo of electricity installations.

Despite improvements in generation, Nigeria’s grid continues to underperform. In 2024 alone, the national grid suffered no fewer than 12 collapses, plunging major cities such as Abuja, Lagos, and Kano into repeated blackouts.

Minister Adelabu, speaking at the ministerial conference, advocated for the grid to be regionalised to avoid total national blackouts.

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) attributed these failures to ageing infrastructure, vandalism, and an inconsistent gas supply to thermal power plants.

The minister also lamented the country’s overreliance on imported power equipment, which he said continues to strain foreign exchange reserves.

The unreliability of the national grid has led many Nigerian companies and households to turn to off-grid power solutions. Collectively, petrol and diesel generators now produce around 40,000 megawatts—eight times what the national grid transmits. Some states are actively exploring independent power markets and mini-grids to reduce dependence on central infrastructure.

Tsurenko to take legal action over WTA ‘abuse’

Ukraine’s Lesia Tsurenko says she will “seek justice in court” after being subjected to “moral abuse” by the Women’s Tennis Association.

The 35-year-old says she has suffered from panic attacks because of the tour’s decision to “protect” an unnamed senior official after their “conscious” attack on her.

“I spoke about it openly and directly. I tried to seek protection and justice within the WTA,” Tsurenko wrote.

“But in response, faced indifference and injustice, which led to a prolonged moral decline.

“Pain, fear, panic attacks, humiliation, withholding information, harassment of my team to silence me… and this isn’t even the full list of what I’ve had to endure.

“My last chance to defend myself, to stand up for my rights, my dignity, and to prevent such acts of violence in sports is to seek justice in court.”

Tsurenko, who considered quitting tennis following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, has spoken regularly about the challenges of competing on the tour against the backdrop of the war.

The Ukrainian, ranked 239th in the world, pulled out of a match in 2023 after suffering a panic attack following a conversation with the WTA leadership about its response to the war.

She says the organisation has become a “terrifying and alien place”.

“The WTA tour refused to protect a woman, a player, a human being. Instead, the WTA tour chose to protect a person in a leadership position,” wrote Tsurenko.

What has the WTA said?

The WTA has emphasised its position in opposing Russia’s invasion and maintaining its support of Ukrainian athletes.

“From the outset, the WTA has been steadfast and clear in its condemnation of Russia’s war on Ukraine and the actions of the Russian government against the Ukrainian people,” the association said.

“Consistent with our position, the WTA has taken numerous steps to assist our Ukrainian player members, who have faced great challenges as professional athletes.

“The WTA has been equally clear that it was founded on principles of equality and non-discrimination and its rules provide that competitions are open to all women players who qualify based on their merit, and without discrimination.

“Consistent with those principles, and in common with other tennis organizations, the WTA has taken the position that individual athletes should not be penalised for the actions of their governments.”

It added: “While the WTA has the greatest sympathy for the significant challenges that Ms Tsurenko and our other Ukrainian athletes have faced, we are disappointed that she has decided to engage in litigation to seek to hold the WTA responsible for her distress.
