“We talked at length over two years about this and what he said to me on many occasions is ‘look at my options’…’Look at what my options are. I can either go there and I can die peacefully, with grace, without pain, without suffering or I could be laid in a bed not being able to move, not even being able to look at something unless you move my head.’ What he wanted, nothing more but a good death.”

King Charles mourns ‘cruelty of humanity’ in emotional Easter message for Maundy Thursday

In the run up to the weekend, our Royal team awoke to the King’s Easter message to the nation. In the emotional address to mark Maundy Thursday, Charles III spoke of humanity’s “great cruelty and kindness”.

The King’s Easter message reads: “One of the puzzles of our humanity is how we are capable of both great cruelty and great kindness. This paradox of human life runs through the Easter story and in the scenes that daily come before our eyes — at one moment, terrible images of human suffering and, in another, heroic acts in war torn countries where humanitarians of every kind risk their own lives to protect the lives of others.”

The King and Queen met specially invited guests and handed out Maundy money this Wednesday to commemorate the Last Supper, Jesus’ final meal with his 12 disciples before he was killed the following day. According to Durham Cathedral: “Each recipient of Maundy money is given two small leather purses by The King, one red and one white.”

David Beckham is at war with his neighbours over plans for a new barn at his rural retreat. An exasperated local complained: “Why do famous people move to the country… then make silly alterations?”

The England legend, who’s wife is celebrating her birthday today, is seeking planning permission for the timber-clad structure at the £6m property in the Cotswolds. Becks, who turns 50 on May 2, keeps bees and chickens at his country bolthole which has a giant lake.

He has asked planners at West Oxfordshire District Council for the right to create an “agricultural storage barn for hay/straw and agricultural equipment”.

Angry villager Harriet Jones has told the council in a letter of objection: “This is just the latest in a long line of applications to build new structures on this land, plus a giant lake. Why do famous people move out to the country and then clutter up their land with endless buildings and make silly alterations? It makes no sense.”

The plans reveal the building will have a steel frame covered in wood with a metal roof which will measure 10m by 5m. Planners will decide on the merits of the application in the coming weeks.

Two years ago, David Beckham and his wife Victoria were given planning permission to transform the property near Chipping Norton, which they bought for £6m in 2016. Roof space in an outbuilding was to be turned into offices.

The pair previously got into hot water with neighbours over developments, including a now-withdrawn application to build a second access road into their home.

They have also been granted planning permission to construct a kitchen garden and glasshouse so that they could grow their own fruit and vegetables.

One nearby resident told the council: “Many people locally indicated to West Oxfordshire Council that the increase in the residential curtilage of this property will see an ever-increasing number of buildings, and to date we have all been proved right.”

Some within Great Tew and surrounding villages have accused the former footballer and pop star of bringing suburbia to the countryside with development at the property.

The family’s Maplewood Barn property sits just over a mile from the popular members club and hotel Soho Farmhouse and around 7 miles from Chipping Norton. The Beckhams have enjoyed success with their hugely popular Netflix series which shows their home and professional lives.

Radio 1’s Katie Thistleton has emergency operation on ovary weeks after giving birth

Radio host Katie Thistleton has revealed this week that she was rushed for “emergency surgery” a few days ago, just six weeks after having given birth. She’s recalled having been in “insane” pain with a health issue prior the procedure.

Katie, 35, who had shared that she was pregnant last year, announced the birth of her son Reuben last month. The BBC Radio host – who presents Radio 1’s drivetime show, Going Home – has now announced that she was back in hospital just days ago for “emergency surgery” on an ovary.

In a post on her Instagram Story this afternoon, Katie shared a photo of herself on a video call with her newborn son . She was seen in a hospital gown whilst on the call with Reuben, who was lying on a mat in a brown onesie.

Alongside the photo, Katie told her followers that she had been “so excited” to have recovered from the C-section that she had over a month ago, prior to needing the more recent surgery. She described the pain she had been in as a result of her ovary having “twisted” as “insane” in the post.

She wrote: “So I’m 6 weeks postpartum today and was so excited to be officially recovered from c section and drive again etc but ended up having emergency surgery on my ovary a couple of days ago for a 16cm (huge) cyst that had twisted the ovary and tube. Guys when I tell you the pain was insane if they’d offered to shoot me in the head I’d have taken it. Luckily they managed to save the ovary after thinking it might need to go.”

Katie later posted an update alongside a clip of Reuben at home. She wrote in the subsequent post today: “And I’m now back home with my lads but livid to be back to square recovery wise.” She concluded by writing: “Big up surgeons!”

She wrote in the post: “Reuben Alexander Harris was born on the 6th March and he is THE CUTEST THING EVER. The love I feel for my incredible husband and this little tiny person we’ve made is almost too much for me to bear.”

The radio host continued: “I feel complete! And so grateful for our family and friends. And so in awe of/want to give a big hug to all the parents I know. And SO impressed with obstetricians and paediatricians and midwives.”

The post prompted well wishes over Reuben’s arrival at the time. Katie and her husband were met with messages from several other celebrities, including fellow radio presenters, in the comments section of her post last month.

CSOs Petition Reps, Accuse Rivers Administrator Ibas Of Impunity

A coalition of 35 civil society organizations in Rivers State has jointly petitioned the House of Representatives, decrying what they termed “severe and brazen acts of lawlessness and impunity” being perpetrated by the state’s administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (Rtd.).

In a strongly worded letter titled “Severe and Brazen Acts of Lawlessness and Impunity Being Carried Out by the Administrator of Rivers State, Vice Admiral Ibok Ete-Ibas, and the Need to Nip Them in the Bud in the Interest of Mutual Peace and Constitutionalism,” the groups urged the Chairman of the Ad Hoc Committee on Rivers State Oversight to take immediate action to halt what they describe as a “drift towards authoritarianism.”

It accused Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas, who is referred to in the letter as the “Administrator of Rivers State,” of undermining constitutional governance. It alleges that he has been using federal power and security operatives to intimidate public officers, suppress democratic institutions, and interfere with the proper functioning of government in the state.

“The conduct of Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas is not only reckless and unconstitutional but also a slap in the face of democratic values. His actions have continued to aggravate political instability and institutional breakdown in Rivers State,” the coalition said in the letter.

The groups demanded that the National Assembly immediately:
• Call Vice Admiral Ibas to order and investigate the legality of his actions;
• Ensure that democratic institutions in Rivers State, particularly the legislature, are allowed to function;
• Direct security agencies to cease illegal occupation of the Rivers State House of Assembly Complex.

They warned that if left unchecked, the continued disruption of civil authority could incite public unrest and erode trust in Nigeria’s democratic framework.

Those who signed are key Civil society leaders including:
• Comrade Enefaa Georgewill – Rivers State Civil Society Organizations (RIVCSO)
• Amb. Marvin Yobana – Citizens’ Quest for Truth Initiative
• Comrade Loveday Enyinda – MOSOP, Rivers State Chapter
• Pastor Mike Daka – Foundation for Leadership and Youth Initiative
• Comrade Nwilene John – Niger Delta Youth for Peace and Development
• And representatives of 30 other organizations.

They emphasized that Rivers State is not a military cantonment and that “no one man, however connected, should be allowed to operate outside the constitution.”

“This is a democracy. Rivers people deserve peace, order, and functional institutions — not autocracy dressed in federal camouflage,” the letter stated.

Singer and Loose Women star Jane McDonald has placed her £1 million Yorkshire home up for sale four years after the death of her partner, Eddie Rothe. The 62-year-old has lived in the cosy bungalow for the past 18 years but might be looking to find a change of scenery in the future.

Since 2022, she’s been living in the Wakefield house with best pal Sue Ravey and spent the last few years renovating the property to get an open plan kitchen, panoramic views and walk-in closets. She previously discussed moving to a new location in an interview with The Times last year.

“I converted the bungalow into a house during lockdown,” she explained at the time. “I had everything done and it’s gorgeous, but now it’s far too big. All I do is clean. I’ll probably downsize. The sea is calling.”

In a rare admission, the presenter expressed her gratitude for having experienced “real love” with the musician.

Reflecting on the heartache of losing her partner, Jane shared: “You have to find your way of dealing with it, it’s not easy. It never leaves you either. Everybody thinks, ‘Oh, she’s back on track.’

“No, it never leaves you. I have to make a decision every morning about what my day is going to be like, because you can go that way, or you can go that way.”

Jane’s first husband is Henrik Brixen, a ship’s plumbing engineer, from Denmark, who later became her manager. They got married in 1998 but parted ways in 2003.
