Macron hails Paris talks with top US officials on ending Ukraine war

As Kyiv’s allies in Europe attempt to rekindle the conflict in Paris amid mounting tensions with Washington, French President Emmanuel Macron has hosted senior US officials in Paris for talks on ending the conflict.

Macron said the discussions were “a very important occasion for convergence” after meeting with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and US envoy Steve Witkoff on Thursday.

Everyone wants a strong, long-lasting peace, according to the statement. The French leader said, “The question is about phasing.”

Trump has been urging the US president to end the Russian-Ukraine conflict, with Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelenskyy speaking bilaterally with his Russian and Ukrainian counterparts.

Trump has expressed frustration with both Moscow and Kyiv, and his efforts have not so far failed.

Russia rejected a Trump request to ceasefire last month, but Ukraine accepted it. Both sides have agreed to halting attacks on energy-focused ships and at sea, both of which they accuse one another of violating.

Some European leaders have urged Trump to ensure that Ukraine has a seat at the table of negotiations in any negotiations because of the US’s overtures toward Russia over the past few weeks.

Hashem Ahelbarra, a journalist in Paris, reported on Thursday that the Macron-hosted discussions showed “strong evidence that the Americans are attempting to work with the Europeans” to reach a ceasefire agreement.

After the Trump administration made its announcement to leave Europe, Ahelbarra claimed there had been “a great deal of frustration and scepticism” among European leaders and that they did not anticipate that the European nations would play a significant part in efforts to end the war.

Because they claim they are the ones who can ensure the voice of the Ukrainians can be heard, “Europe would like to play a key role in the ceasefire talks,” he continued.

Zelenskyy demands that Russia be under more pressure.

In advance of the talks with Rubio and Witkoff, Macron reportedly phoned Zelenskyy, the president of Ukraine, to discuss the matter.

Before that, Emmanuel Bonne, Macron’s chief of staff and his British and German counterparts met, and they spoke about a potential ceasefire and security guarantees, according to Yermak.

We exchanged opinions on the implementation of a full ceasefire, the presence of a multinational military contingent, and the creation of a successful security structure for Ukraine, according to Yermak in a social media post.

Russian aggression comes as Ukraine continues to be attacked by Ukraine, with Ukrainian authorities reporting that at least 12 people were killed by drone strikes and shelling on Thursday.

This week, a Russian attack that claimed the lives of at least 35 people in Sumy, northeast of the city, also sparked widespread outcry and renewed calls for an end to the conflict.

Zelenskyy had earlier urged the leaders of Paris to pressure Russia into agreeing to a ceasefire earlier on Thursday. “Russia kills itself every day and every night. He remarked on Telegram that we must pressurize the killers.

Zelenskyy also pointed out that Witkoff, the US envoy, was “spreading Russian narratives” after suggesting a peace deal with Russia depended on the status of Ukraine’s occupied territories.

Zelenskyy told reporters, “I think Mr. Witkoff has adopted the Russian side’s strategy.” “I believe it is very dangerous because he is spreading Russian narratives, whether we know it or not,” he said.

After their third meeting since Trump’s arrival at the White House in January, Witkoff claimed this week that Putin was open to “permanent peace.”

Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov were reportedly speaking via phone, according to the US State Department in a statement following the discussions on Thursday.

The Secretary also stated that President Trump and the United States want this war to end, and that they have now presented to all parties the blueprints for a peaceful and lasting future. “The Secretary conveyed the same message to the Ukrainian delegation and our European allies in Paris,” it said.

Patrick Adiarte dead: MASH star dies after devastating health struggle

Acting legend Patrick Adiarte has died after a long struggle with illness. The M*A*S*H legend died in hospital from pneumonia at the age of 82.

Patrick’s niece, Stephanie Hogan, confirmed the news to The Hollywood Reporter, stating that he died in Los Angeles on April 15.

The actor was born on August 2, 1943, in Manila, the Philippines, but became huge in the United States for his great character roles. Alongside playing Ho-Jon in the beloved war comedy M*A*S*H, he is also known for his roles as Prince Chulalongkorn in hit musical The King & I, and T.J. Padmanagham in High Time.

Patrick had a glowing career on television alongside stage and the silver screen, and had a special guest role in The Brady Bunch, leading the family through their tumultuous trip to Honolulu. He again appeared on the island in Hawaii Five-O, and carried on the crime theme in Kojak.

Patrick Adiarte, known for incredible character roles across TV, film, and theatre, has died aged 82

On X, formerly known as Twitter, many fans have penned moving tributes to the actor and reminisced about the huge impact he had in the 60s and 70s.

“Sad to read this news. Patrick Adiarte gave Ho-Jon wonderful depth, I always enjoy seeing the episodes that feature him. #RestInPower,” one person wrote.

“Very sad to hear that Patrick Adiarte has passed away. An amazing dancer and a protege of Gene Kelly, who cast him in the original Broadway production of Flower Drum Song, he also almost steals the film version from the actors with bigger roles,” said a second.

Rodgers & Hammerstein – the brains behind The King & I – even noted Patrick’s time working on their show, writing: We’re so saddened to hear the news of Patrick Adiarte’s passing. Our thoughts are with his loved ones at this time.”

Gene Kelly spotted Patrick’s talent, and mentored him as a dancer alongside his acting career

At the time Patrick was in The King & I, he and his family didn’t even have American citizenship. His father had been killed while working as a captain in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, while Patrick was imprisoned by the Japanese alongside his mum and sister.

The trio moved to New York when Patrick was just a small child, and faced threats of deportation for years. It was only when Senator John F. Kennedy got involved in 1956 – thanks to Patrick’s work in The King & I – that he and his remaining living family were recognized as US citizens.

Patrick was a well-known dancer alongside his acting work, frequently appearing on the dance show Hullabaloo. He made a big splash with his moves, with Gene Kelly personally picking him out of the crowd to personally mentor the younger star.

The talented dancer and actor married singer and actress Loni Ackerman in 1975, remaining with her until their divorce in 1992. Alongside niece Stephanie, Patrick is survived by a nephew, Michael.

Supreme Court gender ruling good for women’s sport – Lord Coe

World Athletics president Lord Coe has welcomed the UK Supreme Court’s ruling that the legal definition of a woman is based on biological sex, saying it will benefit women’s sport.

Coe, 68, says World Athletics has always been committed to “protecting the integrity of women’s sport” and hopes the ruling will bring clarity to who can compete.

Current International Olympic Committee (IOC) guidelines allow individual sports to decide on the best approach to balancing “inclusion and fairness”.

Athletics introduced an outright ban on transgender women taking part in women’s events in 2023.

“First of all, I think it underpins common sense, but secondly, it removes a lot of legal uncertainty and interpretation.

“The philosophy that we hold dear in World Athletics is the protection, the promotion of the integrity of women’s sport.

“It is really important in a sport that is permanently trying to attract more women that they enter a sport believing there is no biological glass ceiling here.”

World Athletics introduced a swab test for elite athletes who wish to compete in the women’s category at international events earlier this year.

The test looks for the SRY gene, which is “almost always on the male Y chromosome” and “is used as a highly accurate proxy for biological sex”.

Coe says the introduction of the test has been welcomed: “That was a very important step, and it’s been broadly welcomed in sport and that’s the position we’re in.

“Let me be clear, the World Athletics policy is very clearly defined, and it is around elite female sport – for us that is absolutely vital.

“This is a very different issue, and it is really important that we have clarity at the highest level of sport.

“Inclusivity is a very important element in our sport, and we hold that sacrosanct, and our policies are not preventing transgender competitors from wanting to enjoy the physicality of sport.

“We are saying, at elite level, for you to compete in the female category, you have to be biologically female.”

Several sports including athletics, cycling and aquatics have implemented outright bans on transgender women taking part in women’s events.

In 2022, British Triathlon became the first British sporting body to establish an open category in which transgender athletes can compete.

Other sports have instead put in place eligibility criteria.

Earlier this month, the English Football Association introduced stricter rules, but would still allow transgender women to continue to compete in the women’s game as long as their testosterone was kept below a certain level.

Sport England, which is responsible for developing grassroots sport, said: “Sport England is not a regulator of sport and we do not run facilities.

“However, we do provide guidance on requirements around inclusion, safety and fairness to ensure that the needs of all groups are met.

“We are now considering what the ruling means for grassroots sports and clubs.”

Paris Fury turning down dozens of jobs for one reason despite ‘being in demand’

Paris Fury – who starred with Tyson Fury and their family in Netflix’s At Home with the Furys – is said to be ‘in demand’ at the moment and she’s reportedly ‘selective’ with jobs

Reality TV star Paris Fury is said to be “in major demand” at the moment. It’s been reported that she’s being “selective” over work opportunities lately though and has previously turned down several projects to focus on her family.

Paris, 35, has pursued various opportunities in her career in recent years, including having released two books. She’s also collaborated with fashion retailer New Look and appeared alongside her family in the docuseries At Home with the Furys, which was released through Netflix two years ago.

It’s now been suggested that she turned down projects last year though amid her husband Tyson Fury, 36, being away from Paris and their children whilst training abroad in his boxing career. The author however is now said to have some “exciting things in the pipeline” in her own career.

A source told the Sun that Paris is a “powerhouse” who’s “in major demand” at the moment. They added: “She has turned a lot of things down so she can be with her children as much as she can.”

It’s further claimed that Paris has been “working closely” with her management over her career prospects. The source told the outlet that some of her team are parents too, so they can “appreciate the balance” she wants in her life.

Paris is said to have been “offered loads of projects” since gaining a “massive fanbase” from her family’s reality TV show. The source however said that she’s “taking it slow” over her career ahead with the help of her management team.

The source added that Paris is “being really selective” about her projects. They claimed that this was particularly the case last year when her husband Tyson was away training for months as part of his title-holding boxing career.

It’s reported that she prioritised their kids whilst Tyson was away, during which time she privately dealt with the loss of their unborn baby. Paris, who was six months pregnant, has previously shared that she initially kept the news from Tyson as he was in Saudi Arabia preparing for a match.

The source said: “Paris went through a terrible time when she lost her baby at six months’ pregnant. There were certain opportunities she felt she couldn’t take on at the time, but has a lot of exciting things in the pipeline.”

They further told the outlet that “first and foremost” Paris is a “dedicated” parent who will “do anything” for her children. The source said that she is “really enjoying” building her career though and is looking forward to the future.

According to the Sun, it’s believed that Paris was offered a presenting role at one point. The outlet further suggests that other opportunities have included two reality TV shows and being involved in “other homemaking programmes”.
