Manoj Punjabi produced Indonesia’s top film. Now he wants to shake up TV

Jakarta, Indonesia – Manoj Punjabi, Indonesia’s most commercially successful film producer, has won numerous awards over the course of a career spanning more than two decades.

But the billionaire founder and CEO of MD Entertainment does not hesitate when asked to choose his most treasured accolade.

“It is the one I won for Best Box Office Film at the Indonesian Box Office Movie Awards in 2016 because it was chosen by the viewers,” Punjabi told Al Jazeera in an interview at MD Entertainment’s headquarters in Jakarta.

“Even if I won an Oscar, it wouldn’t be the same because that is chosen by a jury and not by audiences.”

As the producer behind the highest-grossing Indonesian film of all time, KKN di Desa Penari, Punjabi is keenly aware that results count above all else in the entertainment business.

At the same time, the 52-year-old producer has developed a reputation for not shying away from taking risks.

Last year, Punjabi, the scion of a prominent Indian-Indonesian family with a long history of involvement in television and film, made what could be seen as the surprising decision to acquire an 80 percent stake in Indonesia’s NET.TV for some $100m.

By Punjabi’s own admission, the free-to-air television channel, which has a market share of less than 1.5 percent, had been “bleeding money” for years, racking up losses of about $250m over the previous decade.

Still, he saw an opportunity in TV in a world where entertainment options are increasingly dominated by paid-for streaming services such as Netflix, HBO Max, and Amazon Prime.

“First of all, Indonesians like watching for free. Paid TV does not work as well as other platforms, and it is very segmented,” Punjabi said.

“With free-to-air, everyone has access.”

Punjabi said economic and logistical factors in Indonesia, an archipelago of some 17,000 islands, have helped free-to-air TV to remain popular in the Southeast Asian country despite the rise of streaming services.

“In other countries, like India, you have a flats system with many people living in one building, so paid TV becomes very cheap. Over here, it is very scattered. With the infrastructure we have, free TV is very practical and easy. You just need an antenna, so it is more affordable and easily accessible,” he said.

“I thought free-to-air was a sunset market and platform, but in 2020, during COVID, I realised that free-to-air still exists and people are watching it. It is not a dying business, but a sunset business that has been stuck.”

James Guild, an assistant professor at Universitas Islam Internasional Indonesia, or Indonesian International Islamic University (UIII), agreed that there is considerable potential for free-to-air TV to expand.

“There are a lot of places in Indonesia where people lack access to good wi-fi or cannot afford the monthly subscription for a streaming service like Vidio, or can only afford limited data plans and are unable to stream a lot of content,” Guild told Al Jazeera.

“Old-fashioned television is also still good business, [and] there is certainly still money to be made selling advertising on free-to-air television stations in Indonesia,” Guild said.

In 2022, Punjabi made history when he produced KKN di Desa Penari, which eclipsed Titanic to become the highest-grossing film ever shown in Indonesian cinemas.

To date, he has also produced seven of Indonesia’s 20 highest-grossing movies and has been widely credited with reviving interest in the genre of Indonesian horror.

Punjabi’s family started their entertainment business in Indonesia in the 1980s.

He recalls rushing home from school every day so he could watch the raw, unedited footage of the films his family were producing.

Punjabi’s grandfather emigrated to Indonesia following the partition of British India in 1947.

Like his father, he was born and raised in Indonesia.

“I’m Hindu, but I’m a proud Indonesian with an Indian background,” he said.

But in the late 1980s, when Punjabi was 17, everything came crashing down.

There was “a family crisis”,  Punjabi said, which resulted in his parents selling their home and “adjusting their lifestyle”.

“I think my ambition came from that. I never wanted to be like that again. Because you have a certain standard, and then you go down. It hurts and you feel it,” he said.

After brief stints working at a pulp and paper factory and a garment factory, Punjabi founded MD Entertainment in 2002.

In 2024, he was ranked 34th on Forbes’ list of Indonesia’s 50 richest people, with an estimated net worth of more than $1.5bn.

“When you are on that list, you feel a kind of pressure, but in a good way,” Punjabi said.

“To be at that stage, you are thankful, but you have to be more tough, and that is tiring. So that list makes me feel pressured in that way, it makes me motivated to do better, and I hope it doesn’t stop here.”

Asked about his legacy, Punjabi said he hopes that MD Entertainment will still be around in a century and will branch out beyond Indonesia.

“How I am going to do it is still in the pipeline, but there is something iconic that I want to offer audiences, not just in Indonesia or Southeast Asia,” he said.

When it comes to sources of inspiration, Punjabi listed Titanic, Slumdog Millionaire, My Beautiful Life, The Dark Knight, and Casino Royale among his favourite films.

“I’m obsessed with James Bond and Die Hard. I am an action freak, and those are the movies that I kept watching. I’ve watched the James Bond movies 50 to 70 times, particularly You Only Live Twice and Octopussy from the 1960s. Casino Royale blew my mind,” he said.

As for NET.TV., now called MD TV, Punjabi has ambitious plans to raise the quality of free-to-air TV, which has historically not had the best reputation.

“I want to change the game in terms of how we tell stories, be it movies, soap operas or series,” he said.

Punjabi said free-to-air television in Indonesia has often suffered from poor lighting, sets and locations, cliched narratives, and heavy-handed product placement.

“I want to change the look and the storytelling. People think the quality is going down, but with my concept, I hope it will bring in audiences,” he said.

Gemma Collins shares staggering reason she refuses to read her own emails

Gemma Collins claims she has someone else read her emails for her, and that she “can’t stand” the administrative task, elevating her recognizable divaship.

We all dread the feeling of piling up unread emails after some time off work, but reality diva Gemma Collins has taken it one step further by having someone read her inbox for her.

“I’m the worst tech person in the world,” Gemma tells us. “I’ve just about managed to work out how to do a Zoom call and I still can’t stand emails. I get someone to open them for me and read them to me. I just find them so boring!”

While the GC may be living up to her high-maintenance inbox, she claims to be unconcerned about booking holidays and has collaborated with Peach Schnapps to create an AI travel agent tool that can help social media users plan extravagant minibreaks in the UK and Europe. “People simply want a quick, enjoyable, and fantastic holiday.”

At the touch of a button, there are so many more travelers in the world. And that’s exactly what the Archers AI travel agency does, Gemma, 44, the campaign’s campaign manager, Gemma, 44, claims. Whether you’re traveling with your besties or want to escape solo, this tool simply creates a 24-hour itinerary.

And as the reality guru admits she’s planning a trip soon, we can see how amazing she is looking to start a new weight loss journey. Gemma, who started the prescription-only version of Mounjaro earlier this year, claims that “I’m on Mounjaro babe, it’s life changing.”

You wouldn’t believe I’ve lost so much weight. I’ve the only thing I’ve ever been able to lose weight without following a demanding diet. It is a revolutionary, revolutionary drug that can help overweight people. I feel a million dollars more in myself than I do in myself.

Weight loss and diabetes medication is only available on prescription. It was first introduced in the UK privately last year as a weekly self-injectable pen.

Gemma claims that her dress size is shrinking after the injection, and that it’s a gradual progression rather than a race to lose weight. “I want to lose another two stone, but this time I’ve done it super, super slowly, and without feeling any pressure.” I followed it exactly as I had to. I’m wearing everything oversized because all of my clothes are currently too big.

I’m just going to start putting on tighter clothing as the weather warms up, but I’m not yet ready. I’ll wear pyjamas and a nightie, and I’ll think, “God, these are massive.” I find it hard to believe they once suited me and are now hanging off.

Gemma Collins Archers campaign
Gemma’s new travel AI tool campaign is being developed with peach schnapps brand Archers.

She continues, “Wow, even when I travel and people photograph me,” she says. Is that the real me? and I’m not requesting that they teleport me or anything else to make me appear larger. I’m not carrying a lot of weight because my body isn’t in that much pain. So, yes, it’s nice, but I’m not a sucker for it, hun. I’m not going to die because I’m thin, either. It just begins to move along slowly.

Gemma says she hasn’t given much thought to negative outcomes despite the negative feedback that also comes with weight loss injections.

“I’ve only seen positive things, but there might be some.” I don’t think people who are stick-heavy or have weight issues should use Mounjaro. If you’re using it and don’t need it, it’s like anything and needs to go in the right hands. I believe I’m actually saving the NHS. I won’t be using the NHS because I have an illness related to obesity. I’m enjoying life, sweetheart.

And as the reality star admits she’s hoping to jet off on a holiday soon, we note how incredible she’s looking after beginning a new weight loss journey. “I’m on Mounjaro babe, it’s life changing,” says Gemma, who began prescription-only jab Mounjaro, which is used for weight loss and diabetes, earlier this year.

Mounjaro is a prescription-only treatment for weight loss and diabetes treatment. It comes as a weekly self-injectable pen and was launched in the UK privately last year.

As Gemma gets used to her dress size shrinking from the injection, she says it’s a slow and steady journey for her – not a race to drop the pounds. “I want to lose another 2 stone, this time I’ve done it super, super slow and I’ve not put any pressure on myself. And my body isn’t in so much pain so I’m not carrying so much weight. So it’s nice, but I’m not obsessed with it, hun. I’m not dying to be thin and all of that. It’s just slowly, slowly with me.”

Despite weight loss injections also receiving backlash alongside positive results, Gemma says negativity isn’t anything she has paid attention to.

I won’t be going to the NHS with an obesity related illness so I won’t be putting any strain on it. I’m loving life, honey.”

Why Rodgers is keen to keep ‘instrumental character’ Taylor

SNS

As the campaign enters its final weeks it remains unclear whether Celtic left-back Greg Taylor will be at the club next season after nearly six years of service.

The 27-year-old is out of contract and while manager Brendan Rodgers said earlier this year it was more likely than not Taylor will be moving on, some recent reporting suggests the club could come to an agreement with the Scotland international.

Celtic fans are split on whether this would be a wise move or not, with some holding doubts about Taylor’s qualities, particularly at Champions League level.

While the return of Kieran Tierney in the summer perhaps undermines the case for keeping the former Kilmarnock player at a greater cost.

Others, though, believe Taylor is a valuable player who has experience of winning regularly at Celtic, and keeping him alongside Tierney would give them two strong options at left-back next season.

Taylor’s game ‘perfect’ for Celtic

The Celtic manager’s praise for Taylor came after Celtic’s 5-1 thumping of Kilmarnock, where he was named player of the match.

Having dropped out of the team for five league matches, Taylor was re-introduced from the bench at half-time of the 1-0 defeat by St Johnstone.

Despite Celtic failing to come back in the match Rodgers saw enough to reinstate Taylor into the starting line-up, and he thrived as Celtic returned to form with a bang.

Playing as an inverted left-back, as he often does, Taylor was involved in the first two goals through the middle of the pitch as Celtic rattled four in 25 minutes past Kilmarnock.

For the opener, Taylor popped up on the edge of the box and combined with Reo Hatate to open up space for the midfielder to curl in a beauty.

A look at his heatmap for that game, shows he virtually played as a number 10 when Celtic had the ball.

And while it was only one game, the Celtic manager has been clear Taylor’s ability to perform that role is something he cherishes in their bid to open up defences.

“In terms of that role, that inverted position, that’s as good as I’ve seen that played,” Rodgers said of Taylor’s display against Kilmarnock.

“When you’re playing against teams that are man-to-man you need to have mobility in your team, players who can find space. Who are clever and know when to be inside and when to be outside.

‘His character fits this club’

Since returning to Celtic Rodgers has been clear he wants to take them up a level in European competition.

This season was a step forward as they went close to taking Bayern Munich to extra-time in the play-off round, after racking up 12 points in the league phase.

To continue that trend and their dominance of Scottish football, Rodgers knows they need even greater depth and a variety of options in a long season.

That is also why keeping Taylor is important to him. While Tierney, he says, could play further infield, his strengths are more using his pace and dribbling ability to get behind defences and put crosses into the box.

Those different strengths are why the Celtic manager sees them “dovetailing perfectly”.

But it’s not just about ability, but personality as well. When the Celtic boss was asked about Taylor’s future he was effusive in his praise for his player’s attitude.

One of the points he made was Taylor is always up for every game – “And I mean every game” – the Celtic boss emphasised.

The inference was not enough of his team were sufficiently motivated for the first half of their 1-0 loss at McDiarmid Park, something that is understandable given their huge lead in the Premiership, but unacceptable at Celtic.

The nature of the club and Scottish football means a native core is important, as they intuitively understand winning every domestic game is demanded at Glasgow’s big two.

While Tierney will clearly bring that leadership, for Rodgers having as many characters like that as possible, as long as they are also effective, is key.

“He’s very instrumental off the field, he’s got a big personality in the changing room,” the Celtic boss said of Taylor.

So what might Celtic do?

All that said, no player is perfect. Taylor’s lack of height and pace does leave him vulnerable when stepping up to Champions League level.

Comparing his defensive output to that of Celtic’s right-back Alistair Johnston in European games this season suggests this.

The Canadian’s duel success rate is 54% compared to Taylor’s 46%, while the difference in tackle success is 14% in Johnston’s favour, while naturally he was more effective at winning aerial duels too given his height advantage.

With less time and space, Taylor’s impact in the middle of the pitch is also reduced.

Statistics show Alistair Johnston had better defensive output than his Celtic team-mate Greg Taylor in Champions League matches this seasonBBC Sport

And while any player is capable of being undone at Champions League level and Taylor still played his part in the successes in Europe, one of the big appeals of bringing Tierney back are his physical attributes – when fit – and dogged one-on-one defending.

Rodgers has often mentioned a lack of running power and athleticism as reasons why Celtic struggled in the Champions League for so long, something a fit Tierney will help solve.

The question for Celtic, though, is not whether they should keep Taylor but, at what point does it become too expensive to?

A player of Tierney’s pedigree will not come cheaply in wages, and so paying two essentially ‘first choice’ left-backs would be a big call, and not something Celtic would usually do.

The other option is to bring in a younger, cheaper understudy to play the minutes Tierney will miss, with the hope they develop and grow in ability and value.

Those are the solutions Celtic will be considering. And the decision they take could be instructive of how Rodgers wants his team to grow.

“Greg knows how we all feel about him here,” the Celtic boss said.

“It’s a big decision at 27, if you commit you’re committing for four or five years so you’re saying this is your big contract here.

Doncic helps Lakers level series against Minnesota

The Los Angeles Lakers’ 94-85 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves leveled the Western Conference first-round play-off series at 1-1 thanks to Luka Doncic’s game-high 31 points.

As the home team started the game strongly in the first quarter, Doncic recorded 16 of his points, which included 12 rebounds and nine assists.

LeBron James added 21 points to the Lakers’ total while Austin Reaves, a teammate, added 16 points.

At the conclusion of the first quarter, Doncic said, “It was just a question of whether or not we would be more physically active.”

“We spent 48 minutes there,” the statement read. We made a lot of mistakes in the first quarter, learned from the final game, and just kept going.”

Julius Randle added 27 points for Minnesota, but that was not as aggressive as in the first game.

According to Edwards, “it seemed like they kind of kind of went into a zone every time I caught the ball.”

We’ll watch the movie and be prepared for Game Three, the director said, “It was a little confusing at times.”

Giannis Antetokounmpo, a star player for the Milwaukee Bucks, scored a game-high 34 points as the Indiana Pacers defeated Milwaukee on Saturday to fall short of their first-round playoff game, 122-115.

After missing five weeks, Damian Lillard returned to the Bucks for a three-point performance in the final minutes of the fourth quarter to help his team cut a 15-point deficit and move to 115-113 as a team.

The Pacers held on in a game that included a first-quarter scuffle and a number of technical fouls, but Andrew Nembhard, who had 17 points, delivered a three-pointer.

Tyrese Haliburton remarked, “It’s fun. Everyone strives for this, according to the quote. We’re all competing, so we’re enjoying ourselves at the moment.

Pascal Siakam, a Pacers teammate, added 24 points and 11 rebounds, while Haliburton added 12 assists.

Oklahoma City Thunder, the Western Conference champions, defeated the Memphis Grizzlies 2-0 in the first-round play-off series with a comfortable 118-99 victory at home.

As team-mates Jalen Williams and Chet Holmgren added 24 and 20 points, respectively, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander added 27 points for the Thunder.
