“I’m only about titles but Sonia [Bompastor] said she’s after the records – so now so am I,” said Chelsea’s Erin Cuthbert.

The Scotland midfielder, 26, is used to chasing trophies but when you have already won them, you need new targets.

Her side delivered the goods on Saturday, grabbing a stoppage-time winner against Liverpool to ensure they ended the season unbeaten, creating “history” in the process.

They are the first Women’s Super League (WSL) club to remain ‘invincible’ in a 22-game campaign and the champions broke their record points tally to do it.

It capped a brilliant debut season for French manager Bompastor and Chelsea can still achieve a domestic treble, having also lifted the Women’s League Cup, and face Manchester United in the Women’s FA Cup final on Sunday, 18 May.

The scene was set at Stamford Bridge to celebrate in front of their fans in the final game of the season and it was fitting that academy graduate Aggie Beever-Jones claimed the winner after 91 minutes in their 1-0 victory.

Smoke from the fireworks behind the trophy stage drifted across the pitch as players danced in front of the stands – Bompastor watching on with her four children by her side.

“It was wonderful,” she said, when asked how special it was to have her family alongside her. “I had goosebumps just because sometimes behind the scenes [my children] cry because you are travelling and not home.

“It can be difficult, but they understand your job and it’s even better when they can share these moments with you. They know what it means for us.

How does this season compare?

Winning a sixth successive WSL title is one thing, but going unbeaten is another.

It is only the fourth time an English women’s team has gone a full campaign without suffering defeat, excluding the curtailed Covid campaign in 2020.

Chelsea did it themselves in 2017-18 after 18 games, while rivals Manchester City (2016) and Arsenal (2012) had achieved the feat previously in 16 and 14-game seasons – but none in 22 matches until the Blues.

Bompastor’s side also eclipsed Chelsea’s own points record set in 2022-23 (58) with their success against Liverpool taking their tally to 60.

The records, like the trophies, continue to roll in.

“To be able to achieve that, for me, is more than the title,” said Bompastor, as she reflected on the magnitude of their unbeaten campaign.

She revealed it was not something she had thought about until Chelsea had the WSL title wrapped up with victory over Manchester United, with two games to spare.

But defender Lucy Bronze had her eyes on the record for months, stating their goal to be ‘invincible’ back in January following a 1-0 win over Arsenal.

They did not shy away from their ambitions in the end with the word “unrivalled” printed on the front of Saturday’s match programme, surrounded by flowers bearing the dates of their eight league titles.

Having come out on top against their rivals yet again, are they the greatest WSL team in history?

“It’s difficult to say that. For the club to be able to win six titles in a row means we have been consistent and every year we have managed to win trophies,” added Bompastor.

“Maybe the fact this year we were unbeaten makes it even more special because it never happened before.

Where it could have been lost

“Consistency” was the word repeatedly used by Bompastor to sum up Chelsea’s campaign but it has not been easy.

With the former Lyon boss stepping into the big shoes left by Emma Hayes, the squad went through what they described as a “transitional season”, bedding in new players and adapting to the new manager’s style and coaching methods.

Hayes herself was one of the first to congratulate Chelsea, posting on Instagram that their achievements were “so, so deserved”.

The results were immaculate but not the performances – they won by one-goal margins on 10 occasions and trailed four times during the season.

Of their 56 goals, 17 came in the last 15 minutes of matches (30.4% of their total), and eight were scored in stoppage time.

Between 26 January and 2 March, they dropped two points and won four successive matches by a one-goal margin in a period where they had to grind out results.

“It is sometimes difficult to describe my feelings and emotions. We had the right mentality from the beginning of the season until the end,” said Bompastor.

“We have been consistent even when sometimes performances were not the best – we always found a way to win and get the three points.

“I think maybe the game we had against Arsenal [in January] was probably when we started to realise we were in a really good position to win the league.

“The second part of the season was more difficult because we were not as dominant as we would have liked to have been.

“For me, it is a great achievement because we were able to be consistent, unbeaten, and in this league it means a lot because it is really competitive.”

All-in-all, Chelsea’s title was never in doubt as they finished 12 points clear with 19 wins and three draws.

They won six of their six matches against the other top-four sides – Arsenal, Manchester United and Manchester City.

The only times they dropped points were in three draws against Leicester (1-1), Brighton (2-2) and West Ham (2-2).

Katie Price sparks fresh fears for her pet dog as PETA speak out over ‘dangerous’ video

Katie Price has been blasted by fans and the animal rights charity Peta after sharing a video of her dog leaning out of a window while driving in a car – and was warned it could have ended in “tragedy”

Reality TV star Katie Price has sparked fresh alarm among her fans who feared for the life of an animal in her care. The 46-year-old mother-of-five has an unwanted track record of animals dying in unfortunate circumstances.

Eight of the star’s animals have died in recent years – and there has even been a petition calling for her to be slapped with a ban from owning pets, which has attracted over 37,000 signatures. Some fans have been keeping a close eye on the star when it comes to her livestock – and were shocked to see her putting her dog in a potentially dangerous situation.

Taking to Snapchat, Katie shared a video of a dog leaning out the window of a moving car. She captioned the video clip to write: “Anyone else have a pet like this?”

But her simple post attracted a wall of anger from followers who expressed concern for the pooch. Among complainers is the animal charity People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (Peta) – who slammed the star for sharing her video on social media.

A spokesperson told The Sun: “While it’s wonderful for dogs to enjoy the great outdoors and lovely when guardians include them on suitable outings, it can be damned dangerous to have the car window lowered enough for them to jump or fall out.”

Highlighting the risks to the dog, the spokesperson said: “A sudden stop, sharp turn, or tempting distraction can quickly turn a fun trip into a tragedy.”

The latest intervention from Peta comes after they previously offered to pay her thousands of pounds to stop buying pets. Offering the glamour model £5,000, they said in a past statement: “things have gone horribly wrong with many of the animals under her supervision.”

In June 2023, Katie’s German Shepherd Blade was struck on the busy A24, close to her home in East Sussex. Sharing her grief at the time, she wrote in an online post: “Words can’t express the lost of my best friend my protector my absolutely everything who had sadly passed away today. I have no words to say how I’m feeling but numb and shocked rip Blade.”

Six months earlier, her pet Pomeranian Sharon was killed, reportedly in a horror crash on the same road. And the year before that, Katie’s Alsatian Queenie, a present from her ex Kieran Hayler, was allegedly hit by a pizza delivery driver.

She wrote on social media at the time: “I’m absolutely devastated… she was killed by a heartless delivery driver who ran into our dog seeing her struggle and drove off without telling and left her to die.”

Another Alsatian belonging to the star was killed on the A24 in 2020 – but it’s not just dogs that have died in tragic circumstances. A horse was also killed on the busy road in 2017 when it escaped from a field.

In July 2020, French bulldog Rolo died after getting stuck under an electric armchair. The pet had been a present for Katie’s daughter, Princess Andrei’s 13th birthday and the mum called what happened a ‘freak accident’.

The glamour model attempted to revive the pet before rushing him to the vet, where she learned it was sadly too late. “There was nothing they could do, but they did say he wouldn’t have died in pain, it was quick,” she explained on YouTube at the time.

Doyle sets winners record for female jockey

Hollie Doyle secured victory on Brindavan at Ascot to claim the record for most winners ridden by a female jockey in Britain.

The 28-year-old’s triumph on the 8-1 chance, which is trained by Sean Woods, gave her victory number 1,023.

Doyle had moved level with Hayley Turner at Chelmsford on Thursday.

“I’ve got to pinch myself to believe that I’ve done this well, so long may it continue, Doyle told Sky Sports Racing.

“It’s a great milestone to have reached and I’ll keep kicking.”

Woods added: “We don’t get to use her much but I asked her to get a lead and everything went like clockwork, she’s a great asset to the sport.”

Doyle broke the record for the number of annual winners ridden by a female jockey in 2019 by chalking up 116 triumphs, and reached 1,000 British winners in March.

In 2020, Doyle sealed her first Royal Ascot victory on Scarlet Dragon and claimed five victories in one meeting at Windsor.

Those achievements were recognised as she was named Sunday Times Sportswoman of the Year, as well as taking third place in the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award.

The road to Munich is now clearer! The boys have been separated from the men. After months of mouth-watering games and battles on the pitch, only two teams are left in this season’s UEFA Champions League: Inter Milan and PSG.

To get to this point, Inter Milan saw off Barcelona in one of the games that would go down as a classic in the UEFA Champions League. While aiming to get to their second final in the competition, Arsenal slumped against PSG, losing in France to add to Mikel Arteta’s misery.

On May 31, PSG and Inter will now battle to find out the winner of this season’s competition.

Although no English team made the final of the Champions League, Premier League fans will take solace in the Europa League, the second-tier club football competition where Manchester United and Tottenham face off on May 21.

Both sides, enduring a torrid form on the domestic scene, will be hoping to land the trophy to salvage a miserable season that has seen them out of European places. The winner of the competition will get an automatic slot for next season’s Champions League.

Meanwhile, Chelsea also booked a place in the Conference League final and will play Real Betis on May 28.

Nigeria’s World Relays Dreams Scuttled

In athletics, Nigeria withdrew from the World Relays following visa issuance delays by Chinese authorities. The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) says visas for the country’s contingent came “far too late for meaningful participation” in the competition, a move which dampens the diplomatic ties between Nigeria and the Asian country. Nigeria’s 18-person team – including hurdle star Tobi Amusan – was to participate in the men’s, women’s, and mixed 4x100m, and mixed 4x400m.

Flying Eagles Soar To Quarters

The tracks may not have given Nigerians something to cheer about, but the football pitch is bringing joy to millions of football fans. That’s because the Flying Eagles are now in the last eight of the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after battling to a 2-2 draw against Kenya in their last group match. With five points to boot, the Flying Eagles square off against West African rivals and defending champions Senegal in the quarter-final of the event. That game is on Monday. Other matches in the last eight are: Ghana vs Egypt; Morocco vs Sierra Leone, and South Africa vs DR Congo.

Nnadozie’s Heroics Push Paris FC to Glory

In the meantime, the Super Falcons’ pair of safe hands, Chiamaka Nnadozie, was the heroine late Saturday as her club Paris FC clinched the 2025 Coupe de France Féminine, the side’s first major trophy in nearly two decades. The Nigerian saved two decisive penalties in the shoot-out after the game ended barren, earning her accolades from footballers, pundits, and fans alike.

The French club last won that crown in 2005 and only celebrated a silverware when they scooped the 2006 Division 1 Féminine title.

The Drought is Over! Kane Has A Title!

Talking about trophies and silverware may be new to England captain Harry Kane. But that narrative changed for good on Sunday when Bayern Munich won the Bundesliga, earning Kane his first-ever major career silverware.

The forward, who joined the German side last season after years with Tottenham Hotspur, where he never won a trophy despite his impressive goal-scoring record, had a great first term with the Bavarians. He, however, did not crown that display with a title as Bayern lost the league, Champions League and DFB-Pokal.

Alonso to Leave Leverkusen

Leverkusen, who won the Bundesliga in Kane’s first season in Germany, will now be without their title-winning coach, Xabi Alonso, next campaign. This is because the Spaniard has a bigger fish to fry: he will be Real Madrid’s manager!

The 43-year-old has already agreed to join Real and will link up with the Spanish giants after the Club World Cup, replacing Carlo Ancelotti, with a compensation payment of around 12 million euros ($13.5 million) to be paid to Leverkusen. Taking over in October 2022, Alonso guided Leverkusen to an unbeaten league and cup double in 2023-24, the first Bundesliga title in the club’s history.

From Spain and Germany to Portugal, the country that has called up Cristiano dos Santos, the eldest son of five-time Ballon d’Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo, to their Under-15 squad.

This is a first time call for the 14-year-old, who, like his father, plays for Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia, and also had spells with Ronaldo’s former clubs Manchester United and Juventus.

The Selecao Under-15s will face Japan, Greece, and England at the Vlatko Markovic youth tournament in Croatia between May 13-18.

Moving back to club football! While Barcelona have crashed out of the Champions League, one of their players is not giving up hope of bringing the trophy to the Nou Camp! Lamine Yamal, the teenage sensation, is promising Barcelona fans of better days ahead despite an agonising defeat to Inter Milan at the San Siro.

The Spaniard says he and his teammates will continue to put in the fight until the UEFA Champions League returns to the Blaugrana, who last won the trophy in 2015 under Luis Enrique, now coach at Paris Saint-Germain (PSG).

Swiatek’s Rome Title Defence Ends Early

Finally, in tennis, Iga Swiatek was dumped out of the Italian Open on Saturday after the reigning Rome champion suffered a shock 6-1, 7-5 defeat at the hands of Danielle Collins, as Jannik Sinner prepares for his return to action from a contested doping ban.

Barcelona vs Real Madrid: Ancelotti coy on future as Alonso link grows

Carlo Ancelotti says Xabi Alonso has “all the doors open” for a move to a big club, with speculation building that the former Real Madrid midfielder is set to replace the Italian coach at the helm of the Spanish powerhouse.

Ancelotti gave his routine pre-game news conference on Saturday, a day after Alonso announced he was leaving Bayer Leverkusen.

He praised the work of Alonso, who has been widely linked to an eventual move back to Madrid after leading the German club to the Bundesliga title last season.

“I read that Xabi is leaving Bayer Leverkusen, where he did a fantastic job,” Ancelotti said before Sunday’s trip to Barcelona. “He has all the doors open because he has shown that he is one of the best coaches in the world.”

Ancelotti again refused to speak about his future, especially before a decisive Clasico in LaLiga. Madrid trail Barcelona by four points and need to win to keep alive their chances of winning a trophy this campaign.

But he did speak movingly about what Madrid means — and will mean — for the most successful manager in European football.

For Ancelotti, his relationship with the club he has spent six seasons at in two stints is an everlasting “honeymoon”.

“The honeymoon with this club never ends, it continues forever,” he said. “I think that Real Madrid, like Milan before, are the teams that stay with me, given the time I have spent here. At the beginning, there is passion, and when that fades, other feelings emerge, a sense of tender care. My honeymoon with Real Madrid will last for as long as I live.”

The 65-year-old coach is under contract through the next campaign but is widely expected to leave after an underwhelming season in which the team played worse despite adding Kylian Mbappe to its squad.

Brazil have been courting Ancelotti for over a year, and it appears talks are still ongoing with the veteran manager.

Real Madrid must play ‘complete’ game at Barcelona

With only four games remaining of the LaLiga season, only a win will realistically keep Real’s hopes of retaining the title, and for Ancelotti, they will need to get everything right to have a chance on Sunday.

“In this type of game, you have to do things well. Barcelona are used to keeping the opponent in their own area, but no team is perfect,” he said.

“It’s a game where there’s a lot at stake, and to win, you have to manage everything well, defend well, attack well. We have to play a complete game.”

With so much at stake against their great rivals, Ancelotti will have little trouble getting his players fired up.

“It’s not difficult to motivate the players because it’s the type of match for which the players already come out motivated and with a lot of confidence,” he said.

“Playing with Barcelona is special. It will be the last ‘El Clasico’ of the season because Barca are not in the Club World Cup.”

Barcelona focused despite Champions League woe

Barcelona’s players have discussed last week’s Champions League elimination and are ready to put their disappointment behind them against rivals Real Madrid, manager Hansi Flick said in his news conference on Saturday.

Barca suffered a 4-3 Champions League semifinal defeat by Inter Milan on Tuesday.

A home win on Sunday would move Flick’s side one victory away from their 28th Spanish league title.

“We’re doing well. After the defeat in Milan, everyone knows it’s not easy … but we’re doing things right. We’ve talked about what we want to do in these two weeks,” Flick told reporters.

“There are four more games to go. El Clasico is important, we have to show how well we can play. We have to show confidence. The players are doing very well … We’ve been talking about what they are thinking, what they are feeling.

“We had to talk about it as a group. Everyone knows that in a Clasico, you have to give 100 percent. You have to be active, intense, dominant. Real Madrid is a very good team, and we need the fans.”

El Clasico – the low down

Translated as “The Classic” in English, El Clasico is the name given to any football match between rival clubs Barcelona and Real Madrid.

The special matchup between these football sides was born out of a more-than-a-century-old political-historical dimension between an increasingly distinct Catalan national identity, with FC Barcelona representing Catalonia, pitched against the centralised power structures of Spain’s capital city, Madrid, and by extension, its most famous football club, Real Madrid.

The first match between the two Spanish mega clubs was played on May 13, 1902.

In total, 260 matches have been played. Real Madrid lead in head-to-head results with 105 wins to Barcelona’s 103, with 52 draws.
