Thunder rally for record comeback to defeat Grizzlies in Game 3 of playoffs

The Oklahoma City Thunder won their first-round series 114-108, beating the Memphis Grizzlies, to take a 3-0 lead. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander led the team with 31 points and Jalen Williams with 26.

On Thursday night, the Thunder overcame a 29-point deficit in the first half by scoring 23 of his 24 points. With just one more 20 minutes left, Oklahoma City held the lead until Williams made a free throw to give Oklahoma City a 109-108 lead.

With 57.4 seconds left, Holmgren added two free throws, and Alex Caruso added a breakaway layup with 19.4 seconds left. In the final 4:51, the Grizzlies did not score.

Coach of Oklahoma City Mark Daigneault said, “We kind of reconnected to who we are (in the second half).

“We had a very strange first half, and a lot of that came from how well Memphis played and how they landed the first punch and several more punches.” So they deserve praise. However, I thought our response was fantastic in a game that didn’t feel like it was.

Ja Morant, who had a hip injury late in the first half, was not with Memphis during the second half. The Grizzlies led by Scotty Pippen Jr. with 28 points. Jameson Jr. added 22.

[Alonzo Adams/Reuters] Oklahoma City Thunder guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander moves the ball in front of Grizzlies guard Ja Morant.

Prior to the injury, Morant had 15 points and five assists. A left hip contusion was identified for him. The Grizzlies won the second half 63-31 with Morant.

With 3:14 left in the second quarter, Morant soaring in for a layup after falling heavily on his left while fastbreaking and scoring a layup with. Luguentz Dort cut off Morant’s performance in the play. After a few minutes on the floor while being trained by the Grizzlies, he slowly hobbled to the sidelines.

Before being transported to the locker room, Morant returned to the court to take two missed free throws.

After the game, Memphis interim coach Tuomas Iisalo stated that Morant would be evaluated on Friday, “and then we’ll know more.”

Memphis, which had suffered lopsided losses in Oklahoma City’s opening two games, had lost by 51 points in Game 1 and 19 in Game 2, but still had vigor in their home playoff opener.

The Thunder defeated the Grizzlies 36-18 in the third quarter after going 26-26 at halftime. Oklahoma City cut its lead to 10 points midway through the period, largely in the backseat of Holmgren. The 7-foot-1 forward opened the quarter with a 25-9 run that scored 16 points. The Thunder’s lead reached 95-87 as a result of Williams’ 3-pointer at the end of the third quarter.

Daigneault said, “I give Chet a lot of credit because he scored one point at halftime.” He “had a very quiet, subdued first half.” The mental fortitude to maintain it was also very impressive. And he also did a good job of keeping things defensive.

In the first quarter, the Grizzlies jumped to a double-digit lead. Pippen, who had four of the team’s eight 3-pointers in the fourth quarter, was the catalyst. Late in the second half, the Grizzlies had a 12-point lead on three occasions.

Following a 25-5 run that included 16 consecutive points, the Grizzlies increased their lead to 28 points (65-37) midway through the second quarter. Pippen added seven points in the run, while Morant added nine. With 3:07 left, Desmond Bane layup, giving the lead to 29 points, 69-40.

You have to be able to execute, Iisalo said, “We did a great job fighting for 48 minutes, but against this team it’s not enough to fight.”

Memphis had a halftime lead of 77-51 on a 57.4% shooting percentage and a combined three turnovers. In Game 1, the Grizzlies only managed 80 points.

Clippers and Knicks win Game 3 of the series.

Los Angeles jumped out to a 2-1 series lead thanks to a convincing victory over Denver at Inglewood, California, with the help of Kawhi Leonard, who recorded 21 points, 11 rebounds, and six assists.

Norman Powell added 20 points for the fifth-seeded Clippers, all while James Harden added nine assists and six rebounds. Los Angeles won its second straight game in the best-of-seven first-round series with 19 points and nine rebounds.

For his 20th postseason triple-double, Denver star Nikola Jokic recorded 23 points, 13 rebounds, and 13 assists. The fourth-seeded Nuggets also had 22 points and seven rebounds led by Jamal Murray, who also had 23 points.

In Game 3 of their Eastern Conference first-round playoff series, New York defeated Detroit thanks to Karl-Anthony Towns scoring 31 points and Jalen Brunson adding 30, including 12.

The Knicks, who currently lead the best-of-seven series 2-1, host the Knicks on Sunday in Detroit, scored 22 points. In Game 3, Brunson added nine assists and seven rebounds, while his first two games averaged 35.5%.

China pledges support for economy, dismisses US claims on tariff talks

As Beijing refutes President Donald Trump’s claims that he is a part of tariff negotiations, China’s top leaders have pledged to bolster their support for the country’s struggling economy.

Guo Jiakun, a spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, stated on Friday that the two countries had not yet started formal discussions over the trade dispute that US tariffs earlier this month had caused.

China’s retaliatory import duties have increased to 145 percent, while its current level is 145 percent.

China demands that the US first lift all “unilateral” tariffs in order to end the trade standoff.

boosting the economy

Meanwhile, a meeting of China’s top policymakers, including Xi Jinping, was held on Friday to discuss support for businesses and workers who are experiencing “external shocks,” according to state news agency Xinhua.

They added that they would “work with the international community to actively oppose unilateral bullying practices” in the statement.

The meeting’s readout “demonstrates that the government is willing to implement new measures in the event that the economy is impacted by the external shock,” according to Pinpoint Asset Management president and chief economist Zhiwei Zhang in a note.

Zhang did point out that “at this point, it seems Beijing is not in a rush to start a significant stimulus.”

He continued, “It takes time to track and assess the trade shock’s size and timing.”

Beijing has not made a public statement on the subject, but a report from the Reuters news agency reported that China is considering exemptions for some US imports.

No official list of goods requiring tariff relief has been made available, the report claimed, but businesses have been asked to do so.

already exempted

A leaked online document suggested 131 product categories, including those involving aerospace components and pharmaceuticals, could be exempted.

The Chinese Chamber of Commerce of the European Union acknowledged that it had spoken with the authorities about the problem because many businesses rely on crucial US imports.

According to the American Chamber of Commerce, some pharmaceutical companies have already benefited from exemptions for a certain drug.

Safran, a French aerospace company, reported receiving exemptions for some aircraft parts. These actions, according to analysts, could lower Chinese companies’ costs and lessen the strain on US exporters.

The Commerce Ministry has not yet made a public comment on the exemptions, which direct inquiries to “relevant authorities.”

In the meantime, global markets are keeping an eye out for potential de-escalation from both the US and China.

Russia kills 5 people in Ukraine as US envoy Witkoff arrives in Moscow

Following the murder of at least five Ukrainian citizens by Russia, US President Donald Trump’s envoy Steve Witkoff met with Vladimir Putin in Moscow.

According to Serhiy Lysak, the governor of the Dnipropetrovsk region, a child was one of three people killed overnight on Friday in Russian drone attacks on Pavlohrad, a major industrial city in central Ukraine.

He claimed that a six-year-old boy and two teenagers, ages 15 and 17, were also hurt in the attack on a five-story structure. He continued, adding that five of the injured were still hospitalized.

An aerial bomb was dropped on a residential building in the Donetsk region’s Yarova settlement on Friday morning, killing two more victims, according to Donetsk regional prosecutors.

According to the Ukrainian Air Force, Russia launched 103 drones over the course of five days in five different Ukrainian regions, causing damage.

According to Lysak, 11 drones were blown up over the Dnipropetrovsk area.

Visit of Witkoff

Meanwhile, Zein Basravi, a reporter from Kyiv for Al Jazeera, noted that Ukrainians are unlikely to approve of Witkoff and Putin’s meeting.

They view Witkoff and Donald Trump as “parroting Russian propaganda,” he said, underscoring Ukraine’s dissatisfaction with US diplomatic efforts.

As there is no ceasefire, Ukraine and its allies in the EU and other countries agree, and they continue to bomb their cities overnight.

The Ukraine has emphasized that halting Russian aggression and maintaining territorial integrity are its top priorities in the negotiations.

Ukraine’s request to accept Russia’s annexation of Crimea was vehemently rejected by Kyiv.

Sergey Lavrov, the Russian foreign minister, stated on Thursday that the US-proposed peace agreement with Ukraine is “moving in the right direction,” but that it still needs “fine tuning” in some areas.

Lavrov responded to Trump’s assertion that the deal was “very close” and should “finally be done” in a prelim interview that was scheduled to air on CBS News’ Face the Nation on Sunday.

Lavrov concured, saying, “The president of the United States believes, and I think rightly so, that we are moving in the right direction.”

He continued, “We are prepared to reach a deal, but there are still some specific issues that need to be clarified.” This particular process is a big part of our work.

Ukraine’s red lines are obvious, according to Hanna Shelest, director of security programs at the Foreign Policy Council’s “Ukrainian Prism.”

No one will let us decide which alliance our armed forces should join, despite the fact that it is about the country’s territorial integrity. Since no one has offered us security guarantees, she said, “that’s only logical.”

Shelest remarked that Ukraine’s plan is to form a significant international coalition.

It was obvious that Ukraine could rely on a single major partner even before Trump became president, adding that the largest coalition would be required.

Arsenal urged to put Visit Rwanda ‘financial gains’ aside

A number of Arsenal supporters are urging the club’s board to “put financial gains aside” in their calls for the Premier League to end its sponsorship deal with Visit Rwanda.

The Gunners for Peace organization suggests that Rwanda would benefit from Tottenham’s proximity to the club’s former rivals.

Following more violence in the eastern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo, where authorities claim 7, 000 people have died since January, the African nation’s partnerships with Arsenal, Bayern Munich, and Paris St-Germain have come under scrutiny.

Rwanda is accused of supporting M23 rebels with weapons and sending troops to the rebels by the Congolese government. Rwanda has refuted support for the M23 despite claims made by the United Nations and the United States.

Campaigner Joe Mbu, who was born in the Democratic Republic of Congo, reported to BBC Sport Africa that “they are ripping or cutting off the Visit Rwanda part of the Arsenal shirt.”

Tresor Kudabika, a fellow Congolese who has changed his own kit to have the team’s logo on the sleeve, agrees that the team’s popularity is hampered by its close ties to Rwanda.

“We reached the (Uefa Champions League) quarter-final with Real Madrid,” the coach said. He claimed that the entire Congo was backing Real.

Visit Rwanda’s sleeve partnership with Arsenal started in 2018, and it is reportedly worth more than £10 million ($13.33 million) annually, according to campaigners.

PSG, a French club that plays for the Gunners in the Champions League semi-finals, renewed their partnership with Visit Rwanda until 2028.

Despite receiving 75, 000 signatures on an online petition calling for PSG to end the deal, the decision was made.

Mbu and his fellow campaigners are optimistic that North London will not follow suit.

“I think they can make the right decision,” he said. The positive aspect of it is that Arsenal representatives have spoken with them, Mbu said.

When should we consider putting financial gain aside and considering its humanity?

It would be a shame if Arsenal kept up the sponsorship.

A Rwandan government spokesperson defended their sports partnerships and claimed they helped boost the nation’s economy, while Arsenal stated that the club would not be making any comments on the Gunners for Peace campaign.

The Arsenal Rwanda Supporters Club’s secretary general, however, claimed that “the scale of dissent” was “overstated” by claims made by the club’s secretary general.

More than 10 nations gathered for a fan festival for Rwanda, which was recently held in Rwanda.

Olivier Nemeye, president of Arsenal Rwanda, said the festival “spreads strong pan-African support for the team and the Visit Rwanda collaboration.”

Why “Turn Tottenham”?

James Turner and Tresor Kubadika wear red and white Arsenal home shirts and Gunners for Peace armbands as they stand in front of a billboard bearing the message 'Visit Tottenham'BBC Sport Africa

Before a billboard close to the Emirates Stadium with the message “Visit Tottenham,” Gunners for Peace first posted a spoof video online advertising the “beautiful streets” of Tottenham.

According to organiser James Turner, “It is a joke with a very serious punchline.”

We’re attempting to demonstrate that Rwanda is the only sponsor we can think of that can.

“It’s obvious that most Arsenal supporters would not want to be sponsored by Tottenham.

Simply put, we’re looking for a sponsor that best reflects the club’s values.

Prior to Arsenal’s 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace on Wednesday, the group distributed armbands to supporters that could be used to cover the Visit Rwanda logo on a shirt sleeve.

People should feel free to sport Arsenal shirts, Kudabika said.

You can’t be embarrassed to wear an Arsenal shirt with Visit Rwanda on it.

Prior to the Champions League game against PSG at home on Tuesday, Gunners for Peace will be ordering more armbands, and they are also talking about potential joint action with the French club’s fans.

Ceasefire and “economic transformation”

Since January, M23 launched an unprecedented offensive, seizing the cities of Goma and Bukavu, and raising concerns about a wider regional conflict, which has grown more severe in eastern DR Congo.

Rwanda has claimed that its forces are defying the Congolese army and allied militias, some of whom it claims have links to the genocide in Rwanda in 1994.

Rwanda also denies that it is using its mineral resources in a criminal manner, as is alleged by DR Congo.

However, the rebels and DR Congo have agreed to suspend fighting until Qatar’s “peace talks” are concluded.

Following more than a week of talks characterized as “frank and constructive,” both parties jointly announced on Wednesday that they would work toward peace.

Rwanda’s government has been accused of investing in sport to improve its reputation internationally, a practice that critics have referred to as “sportswashing.”

Kigali is scheduled to host the World Road Championships for cycling in September in addition to the Visit Rwanda deals, but chances of the nation hosting a Formula 1 race appear to have waned.

The Rwandan government claimed that its sports partnerships had a significant impact on the nation’s economic transformation since 1994 and that African nations should become more active in this area.

A spokesperson told BBC Sport Africa that the Visit Rwanda tourism campaign helped Rwanda generate nearly $650 million (£488 million) in tourism revenue last year.

The few nations that have historically taken control of elite sport are no longer the ones who can no longer compete in it.

“Global sporting organizations are welcoming the rest of the world because they believe there is a chance to attract new fans.”

Given that Rwanda’s president, Paul Kagame, is a fan of the Gunners, Rwanda’s decision to collaborate with them seven years ago may not surprise you.

Kudabika insists that his club should cut those ties even though peace talks are still in progress.

He claimed that “Wearing Visit Rwanda is simply telling people that killing people in the Congo is acceptable.”
