Muslim nations, European leaders back Arab proposal for Gaza

The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and several European nations have backed the recently unveiled Arab plan for Gaza following 15 months of Israel’s devastating war on the besieged enclave.

The foreign ministers of France, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom said in a joint statement on Saturday that they supported a plan for the reconstruction of Gaza at a cost of $53b.

“The plan shows a realistic path to the reconstruction of Gaza and promises – if implemented – swift and sustainable improvement of the catastrophic living conditions for the Palestinians living in Gaza”, the statement said.

It added that Hamas “must neither govern Gaza nor be a threat to Israel any more” and that the four countries “support the central role for the Palestinian Authority and the implementation of its reform agenda”.

The plan was drawn up by Egypt and adopted by Arab leaders at an Arab League summit in Cairo this month.

Earlier on Saturday, the 57-member OIC also formally adopted the plan in an emergency meeting in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

The body, which represents the Muslim world, urged “the international community and international and regional funding institutions to swiftly provide the necessary support for the plan”.

The Arab-backed plan is seen as a counterproposal to United States President Trump’s suggestion the Gaza Strip be depopulated to “develop” the enclave, under US control, in what has been termed ethnic cleansing.

The Arab plan consists of three major stages: Interim measures, reconstruction and governance.

The first stage would last about six months, while the next two phases would take place over a combined four to five years.

The aim is to reconstruct Gaza – which Israel has almost completely destroyed – maintain peace and security and reassert the governance of the Palestinian Authority (PA) in the territory.

‘ Does not meet expectations ‘

However, the Arab plan has already been criticised and rejected by the US and Israel.

The plan “does not meet the expectations” of Washington, State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce told reporters on Thursday.

Nnamdi Kanu’s Alleged Terrorism Case Reassigned To Another Judge

The ongoing terrorism case against leader of the Indigenous People Of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu has been reassigned to another judge.

The reassignment was directed by the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court in Abuja, John Tsoho, after months of intense pressure.

The special counsel to Kanu, Aloy Ejimakor, disclosed this in a statement on Saturday.

Justice Binta Nyako had been presiding over the trial of the IPOB leader.

However, during the court’s hearing on 24 September 2024, Kanu requested that Nyako recuse herself from presiding over the matter, accusing the judge of bias.

The statement read “Yesterday, before the legal team conducted our routine visitation to Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, we received two separate official letters regarding his case. The letters are momentous and somewhat pyrrhic.

” One letter was from the Honourable Chief Justice of Nigeria, responding to a recent letter we had written to her, seeking her prompt administrative intervention (as the administrative head of Nigerian judiciary) on the matter of a proper and lawful reassignment of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s case, following the recusal of the Judge that was conducting it.

“The other letter was from the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, informing us that the case has been reassigned to another Judge of the Federal High Court”.

Consequent to these latest developments, Kanu instructed the legal team to publicly convey his sincere gratitude to the Chief Justice of Nigeria for her “sound administrative discretions and the despatch with which she responded to our request”.

His legal team also expressed his profound appreciation to members of the general public who publicly expressed their support for “our righteous demands that Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s case be reassigned to another Judge, as the law demands”.

The statement continued “To be sure, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has always been ready to take his trial because he is firmly convinced of his innocence. But the perverse events of the past six months (from September 2024, when the recusal happened) posed portent dangers to his constitutional rights, particularly his right to fair and speedy hearing.

” It was in view of these untoward developments that we were propelled to resort to taking extraordinary measures to ensure that his case is properly reassigned and conducted in accordance with the law.

Robertson beats Murphy in World Grand Prix semi

Neil Robertson fought back from 5-3 down to beat Masters champion Shaun Murphy 6-5 and reach the World Grand Prix final in Hong Kong.

The Australian left-hander knocked in three centuries, including a 114 break in the deciding frame, to win his semi-final.

Robertson, 43, will play either world number one Judd Trump or 2015 world champion Stuart Bingham in Sunday’s best-of-19-frames final.

Robertson was 19th in the world rankings before the World Grand Prix, but his run to the final has boosted his hopes of returning to the top 16 and therefore securing an automatic spot at the World Championship in April.

The 2010 world champion was beaten in qualifying last year, ending a run of 19 consecutive appearances at the Crucible Theatre.

Murphy, who won the world title as a qualifier in 2005, is faced with potentially needing to go through that route again to reach the main draw in Sheffield this year.

There are two ranking events remaining before the cut-off point for World Championship seedings – the Players Championship and the Tour Championship.
