A tribute to Um Adnan

I first met Um Adnan in 2006 in the south Lebanese village of Chehabiyeh, which lies not far from the border with Israel and regularly suffers accordingly. I was travelling in Lebanon shortly after the end of that summer’s 34-day Israeli assault, which had killed some 1, 200 people and littered swaths of the country with unexploded ordnance.

Um Adnan was born in 1939, nine years prior to Israel’s violent self-invention on Palestinian land. She had married a Palestinian refugee from the vicinity of Nazareth, who had fled to Lebanon in 1948 as a child, separated from his family along the way. Her husband was already deceased by the time we met, but her son Hassan told me with a nostalgic chuckle that the pair’s first encounter had been “like magic”.

Um Adnan bore eight children, two boys and six girls, three of whom died – one in a car accident and one during the Lebanese civil war of 1975-90. The third was accidentally shot by a cousin.

A robustو veiled woman, Um Adnan already had difficulty walking in 2006 when my friend Amelia and I turned up at her house – which unlike many other south Lebanese residences had managed to avoid irreparable damage during the summer’s assault. Amelia and I had been hitchhiking our way through the devastated landscape, and Hassan had been one of countless motorists to pick us up on the side of the road and cart us home to be stuffed with food and put up for the night.

I returned to Lebanon alone in 2008 after taking the bus from Turkiye to Syria, where Hassan volunteered to retrieve me. I would then spend the better part of two months sleeping on Um Adnan’s living room floor beneath a colourful portrait of her late husband. Hassan slept on a mattress beside me, an arrangement that occasioned not so much as a batting of the eye from Um Adnan.

By this time, Um Adnan had even greater difficulty manoeuvring, and yet she could rarely be made to sit still, dedicating herself to an endless rotation of chores, gardening, and cooking. A vat of green beans was always on hand for me – as well as an array of other treats – and the fact that one had to pass through the kitchen to reach the only toilet in the house meant that Um Adnan had plenty of opportunities to intercept me and plunk me down at the table for yet another obligatory feeding session.

Um Adnan had a smile for everyone, her stoic grace all the more notable given her life’s trajectory, which included surviving such episodes of mass slaughter as the Israeli invasion of 1982 that killed tens of thousands in Lebanon. The acute losses she had endured over the years – all against a backdrop of persistent torment by the state that had made her husband a refugee – made the mere act of getting up every morning one of fierce resilience.

Whether cooking, cleaning, singing or bellowing for one grandchild or another to make haste on an errand, Um Adnan embodied an everyday heroism that is denied in Orientalist discourse, which reduces the Arab/Muslim woman to a weak and oppressed figure. Never mind that, in Lebanon and Palestine, it is quite the opposite of weak to hold families together while contending with the ever-present existential Israeli threat.

During the brutal Israeli occupation of southern Lebanon, which lasted from 1978-2000, Hassan had fought with the Lebanese resistance – meaning that Um Adnan never knew at what moment she might lose a fourth child. Now that she had him at home, she held him close.

Though unfazed by the sleeping arrangement in her living room, Um Adnan welcomed Hassan’s announcement that he and I were getting married – part of a scheme we had devised while under the influence of too much wine. As per our wine-induced vision, Hassan’s marriage to me – a United States citizen – would eventually enable him to procure a US passport and travel to his father’s village in present-day Israel.

With my less-than-tidy ways and general uselessness in the kitchen, I was no doubt not the daughter-in-law Um Adnan had envisioned for herself, but she took it all in noble stride.

We were wed by a sheikh in the village of Tibnine, and I was inserted as wife number one on Hassan’s identity document for Palestinian refugees in Lebanon, a category to which he had been assigned by Lebanon’s law that barred Lebanese women like Um Adnan from passing their citizenship on to their offspring.

Needless to say, the passport scheme did not pan out, but Um Adnan showered us with good wishes upon our return from the sheikh and promised a proper party in the future.

I would later lose contact with Hassan for many years – and feared the worst – until one day in December 2022 he materialised in my WhatsApp messages with a series of emojis and a “Belennnnnnnnnn”. He was alive, but Um Adnan was not, having passed away during the coronavirus pandemic. His voice cracked as he told me: “She broke my heart”.

Um Adnan’s house has since been converted to rubble along with much of the rest of Chehabiyeh – the handiwork, of course, of the Israeli military, which launched its latest invasion of Lebanon in the autumn of last year. Her family was able to salvage nothing from the ruins, leaving only memories of the place where Um Adnan had loved and lost and emanated strength in the face of adversity, day in and day out.

Today, March 8, is International Women’s Day. And as Israel continues to do its best to make earthly existence hell for countless international women, I’m thinking a lot about Um Adnan.

Gene Hackman police say investigation remains open as cause of couple’s deaths revealed

An investigation into the deaths of Gene Hackman, wife Betsy Arakawa and their dog Zena remains open, police have revealed.

Oscar-winning actor Gene, 95, his classical pianist wife Betsy, 65, and one of their three dogs were found dead in their Santa Fe, New Mexico mansion on February 26. The cause of death of Gene and Betsy was revealed by chief medical examiner Dr Heather Jarrell in an ‘ unprecedented ‘ press conference on Friday.

In the lead up to Dr Jarrell sharing the cause of death, Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza opened the press conference and revealed the investigation remains open as the police await results of more examinations into their investigation.

He said in the press conference: “Zena, the deceased dog, has been taken for a necropsy at the veterinary diagnostic services and we’ll be awaiting those results”. A necropsy is a post-mortem examination performed on an animal.

Sheriff Mendoza later added: “Cell phone information and the cell phone data is pending, we’re working with state police to get the information from those phones but our investigation shows all the last communication and activity from Ms Arakawa was on February 11”.

While taking questions towards the end of the conference Sheriff Mendoza revealed he hopes the mobile phones will shed further light on the circumstances surrounding the couple’s deaths. When asked if police know if Betsy was feeling ill in the lead up to her death, Sheriff Mendoza said: “We’re going through some of the communications and I think the cell phones may have some indications of that prior to the 11th but, as of this moment, I don’t have any information that she was indicating that she was feeling ill during any communication”.

While answering another question he added: “We consider this an open investigation until we close the loopholes of the cell phones, until we finish out the necropsy results of the canine and other loose ends that we need to tie up but I think we’re pretty close with the timeline”.

In a details-filled press conference, Dr Jarrell explained that Betsy most likely died first, while Gene had died a week later – with his pacemaker recording information on February 18. The last known activities of Betsy were determined to take place on February 11 when she was last seen alive.

The medical expert revealed: “The cause of death for Miss Betsy Hackman, aged 65 years, is hantavirus, pulmonary syndrome. The manner of death is natural, autopsy, examination and full body post mortem, CT demonstrated no findings of trauma, internally or externally, with microscopic findings consistent with Coronavirus pulmonary syndrome”.

Dr Jarrell explained that no trace of COVID 19 or influenza was found within Betsy. She added: “Testing for carbon monoxide was negative. There were no other significant natural disease findings. Pills present on scene, or thyroid medication, which were being taken as prescribed and is not currently a concern for a contributory cause of death”.

Strictly’s Nikita Kuzmin ‘emotional’ over wedding to model girlfriend

At just 27, Nikita Kuzmin is taking the dance world by storm, from dazzling audiences on Strictly Come Dancing to his first solo tour. But behind the sequins and the razzmatazz, there’s an old head on young shoulders as the Ukrainian-born pro tells us about staying true to himself – whether that’s embracing nerves or standing by his artistic choices despite criticism, which he faced on Strictly with his same-sex partner Layton Williams.

Away from the dance floor, Nikita shares his life with his model girlfriend Lauren Jaine, 23, who keeps him grounded amidst the whirlwind of rehearsals and performances. Between 12-hour practice days, the couple find time for each other in their fast-paced lives thanks to Marvel movie marathons and fun days out. And now, as he embarks on his first solo tour, Nikita opens up to OK! about his “superpower” and what the future holds…

Hey, Nikita! You’re so busy with the solo tour – how are you balancing your personal lie and dancing?

I’m really lucky to have a supportive family and girlfriend. I always call my mum on my way home, and when I get back, I have Lauren waiting for me. We make time for each other. Last night, after a 12-hour rehearsal, we watched Iron Man. We’re going through the entire Marvel series!

You and Lauren have been together for almost two years. Have you talked about marriage or starting a family?

Yeah, we’ve definitely talked about the future. I hope one day she’ll say yes! We just saw a video of a wedding in South Africa and got emotional watching it. So, why not?

What do date nights look like?

Well, we both love adventures – random road trips, hikes, exploring new places in London. But honestly, 99% of the time we’re at home watching Modern Family. It’s not about what we do, it’s about just being together and respecting each other’s space.

As a dancer, you get up close and personal with partners. Does Lauren ever get jealous?

I think it can be difficult for anyone who isn’t a dancer to understand, but she knows it’s just a job. We don’t really think about it in a romantic way – it’s just part of what we do. And if there was ever an issue, we’d talk about it and just sort it out.

How is your Midnight Dancer tour going?

Great! Not gonna lie, my body is shattered but the show is in a great place, I’m really happy with it. During rehearsals we were doing 12-hour days. It was exhausting, but when you’re creating something special, it’s worth it.

We’ve seen you dance with your glucose monitor on your arm – how do you cope with your diabetes?

It’s overwhelming sometimes, but I see it as my superpower. It makes me more responsible and aware of my body. If I can inspire even one person by showing them it’s possible to dance with diabetes, then I’ve done my job.

Who would be your dream partner to dance with?

TV chef Gordon Ramsay. But I think Victoria Beckham would be cool too.

You were on Celebrity Big Brother last year. What made you want to take part in it?

It was completely random. I watched a similar show as a kid and one day I just told my agent, “I want to do Big Brother”. The next day, I had a call and the day after, I signed the contract.

Did it match your expectations?

Not at all! I thought it would be easy. Just walking around a house and sleeping? Turns out, it was really hard. I’m a very private person, so not having personal space drains my energy fast. But that’s what the show is designed to do – it creates tension.

Did you make friends in the house?

Yes, I love Bradley]Riches], Marisha]Wallace] and Colson]Smith]. They’re coming to see my show. And Sharona – Shazza]Osbourne]!

Speaking of Strictly, what’s been your most memorable moment?

My first dance with Tilly]Ramsay] meant a lot, but also the Moulin Rouge paso doble with Layton. We finally got a perfect 40 after weeks of pushing ourselves creatively. I was exhausted, but when Craig]Revel Horwood] gave us a 10, I was like, “OK, that was worth it”.

What challenges did you and Layton face together?

The biggest challenge was staying true to ourselves, despite criticism. Like when Layton wore a skirt and heels – we stood by that decision 100%. We knew some people wouldn’t like it, but it mattered. We had each other’s backs, no matter what.

If you could do another reality show, which would it be?

I’m A Celebrity would be fun, or Race Across The World – I love travelling. Also, MasterChef!

What’s one thing about fame that you find difficult?

Privacy. I love my job, but I also love just being a regular person. It took me years to find a balance, but I have my ways now, such as being surrounded by loved ones and focusing on what is important.

Nikola Jokic became the first player in NBA history to register a triple-double of at least 30 points, 20 rebounds and 20 assists in a game as the Denver Nuggets beat the Phoenix Suns 149-141 in overtime.

The Serb, 30, scored 31 points, made 21 rebounds and had 22 assists in the match.

Phoenix trailed by 21 points in the third quarter before a stunning fightback, with Kevin Durant – who scored 29 points in total – hitting a three-pointer on the buzzer to send the game into overtime.

However, Denver forged ahead early in the extra period to secure a second successive victory.

Their 41-22 win-loss record means they are third in the Western Conference.

Denver’s next opponents on Sunday are leaders the Oklahoma City Thunder, who beat the Portland Trail Blazers 107-89.

Fresh Tragedy Hits Niger: Seven Dead, One Injured In Devastating Tanker Explosion

&nbsp, A tragic incident occurred in Karamin Rami village, Mashegu Local Government Area of Niger State, on March 4, 2025, at approximately 6: 30 p. m, when a fuel-laden tanker, struggling to manoeuvre through a bad road without a shoulder, lost balance and overturned, spilling its highly flammable Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) content into a nearby stream.

The stream, used by dry-season farmers for irrigation, became the epicentre of a catastrophic chain reaction when the spilt fuel came into contact with an operating water pump.

The pump ignited the fuel, leading to a fierce fire outbreak that swiftly travelled back to the tanker, causing a massive explosion.

Flames spread through the contaminated stream and engulfed the surrounding rice fields and fruit plantations.

Unfortunately, several farmers working in their fields were caught in the inferno. By the time the fire was extinguished, seven lives had been lost, and one person was severely injured.

The deceased victims have been identified as: Rafiatu Sahabi, Ramlat Shehu, Rashida Abdullahi, Raliya Abdulrahman, Zainab Ahmed, Zuwaira Idrisu, and Maryam A. Nura.

Meanwhile, Maimuna Isah, the sole survivor, sustained injuries and is currently receiving treatment at Saho Rami Primary Health Care Center.

The Director General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), Abdullahi Baba-Arah, confirmed the incident in an official statement. He attributed the tragedy to poor road conditions, which forced the tanker driver to manoeuvre dangerously, ultimately leading to the spill and explosion.

Emergency responders and local authorities have since been deployed to assess the damage and provide necessary support to the affected families.

This unfortunate incident highlights the urgent need for road rehabilitation in rural communities and stricter safety measures for fuel transportation.

Authorities are expected to launch further investigations into the disaster while seeking ways to prevent future occurrences.
