Glasgow Warriors secured a home quarter-final in the United Rugby Championship with a workmanlike victory away to Zebre.

The second-bottom hosts threatened a first win over the reigning champions as they led through two Giacomo da Re penalties at the break.

Visiting head coach Franco Smith had made 10 changes from the side that suffered a heavy Investec Champions Cup defeat by Leinster last time out, but their struggles continued in Parma.

They failed to score in Dublin and were to go another 42 minutes before they managed to get the scoreboard ticking in Italy.

After some untidy play by both sides, fly-half Da Re had given the hosts an eighth-minute lead with a penalty in front of the posts.

Zebre thought they had the opening try when Giovanni Licata went over under the posts, but the replay showed the number eight had lost hold of the ball before touching down.

Moments later, centre Scott Gregory also let the ball slip out his grasp as he crossed the line, but the home side did stretch their lead on the half-hour mark through another Da Re penalty.

Glasgow’s 24-match winning run over Zebre was seriously under threat as the second half began.

However, home lock Matteo Canali was yellow-carded for a head-first challenge on Sebastian Cancelliere and Glasgow took immediate advantage, with full-back McKay finding the corner and Tom Jordan adding the conversion.

McDowell added another try under the posts seconds before Canali’s return, with Jordan kicking the extras to make it 14-6.

Zebre would hold their own again with both sides back to full strength, but the damage had been done.

Glasgow Warriors head coach Franco Smith: “We know how much Zebre have improved.

“They slowed down our breakdowns slow made it difficult for us to create momentum, so all credit to them. “

Zebre: Prisciantelli, Trulla, Paea, Mazza, S Gesi, Da Re, Fusco, Fischetti, Di Bartolomeo, Hasa, Canali, Krumov, Ruggeri, Stavile Bravin, Licata.

Replacements: Bigi, Buonfiglio, Pitinari, Nasove, Ferrari, Garcia, Morisi, Gregory.

Glasgow Warriors: McKay, Cancelliere, Smith, McDowall, Steyn, Hastings, Dobie, Bhatti, Hiddleston, RIchardson, Oguntibeju, Samuel, Ferrie, Vailanu, Mann.

Replacements: Matthews, Schickerling, Talakai, Williamson, Darge, Kennedy, Jordan, Cordero.

PSG Beat Le Havre To Stay On Course For Unbeaten Ligue 1 Season

Paris Saint-Germain stayed on course to complete the Ligue 1 season without losing a game as the Champions League semi-finalists beat struggling Le Havre 2-1 on Saturday.

Desire Doue and Goncalo Ramos scored the goals for PSG either side of half-time at the Parc des Princes, as coach Luis Enrique changed almost his entire starting line-up following the midweek European clash with Aston Villa.

PSG had already secured a fourth successive Ligue 1 title before this game, and their 10th consecutive league win leaves them on 77 points with five matches remaining.

No side has ever completed an entire French top-flight campaign unbeaten.

“We knew this game was a potential banana skin for us after a Champions League match which sucked out all our energy and left us feeling tired,” Luis Enrique said.

“All the ingredients were there for this to be a difficult game against a side who were in need of points. ”

Achraf Hakimi and Bradley Barcola were the only players to keep their place in the PSG line-up at kick-off, following the 3-2 defeat away to Aston Villa which saw them edge through to the last four of the Champions League and a tie against Arsenal.

Doue gave PSG the lead inside eight minutes, and Ramos made the most of his chance in the starting line-up by making it 2-0 shortly after half-time with his 15th goal this season.

Issa Soumare pulled one back for Le Havre, but the result leaves the Normandy side still in third-bottom spot, the relegation play-off place.

– Battle for Europe –

If the title race in France is already over, the fight for European qualification behind PSG is intense, with the next six teams separated by only six points.

Second-placed Monaco drew 0-0 at home to Strasbourg, who are three points behind them in fifth, on a blustery evening in the principality.

Monaco were looking for a seventh successive home win in Ligue 1, but leading scorer Mika Biereth had a goal disallowed for a tight offside call in first-half stoppage time.

They had most of the chances, but Strasbourg had the ball in the net late on too, only for Emanuel Emegha’s effort from close range to also be ruled out for offside.

Liam Rosenior’s Strasbourg are now unbeaten in 10 games and remain hopeful of qualifying for the Champions League — a level the Alsace outfit have not played at since the 1979/80 European Cup.

“I have a group of players who believe they can do it, and I believe they can do it as well,” said Englishman Rosenior, whose side are undefeated since early February.

“Nobody said that this team would be able to do this at the start of the season.

“Ten games unbeaten, and the players are disappointed not to win against Nice (a 2-2 draw last week) and now Monaco, which shows how far we have come in a short space of time. ”

Marseille have the chance to move back above Monaco into second with a win at home to doomed bottom side Montpellier later.

Roberto De Zerbi’s Marseille are under pressure on a run of five defeats in their last seven matches, a sequence which has left them at risk of missing out on a return to the Champions League.

Lyon, in fourth, go to derby rivals Saint-Etienne on Sunday looking to bounce back from their agonising Europa League loss to Manchester United on Thursday.

Lille and Nice, who are now sixth and seventh respectively, also play key games in the fight for Europe on Sunday.

The top three qualify automatically for the Champions League, with fourth going into the preliminary rounds.

Fifth place qualifies for the Europa League and sixth for the Conference League, although there will be an extra Europa League place available via the league should PSG beat Reims in the French Cup final next month.

Canada’s PM Carney plans for stronger defence, broader trade amid US rift

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has unveiled plans to cut taxes and beef up defence spending, arguing Canada must project economic strength and defend its “sovereignty” from the United States amid roiled relations with its neighbour.

Carney, who became prime minister after Justin Trudeau resigned on March 14, presented his Liberal Party’s campaign plan on Saturday before parliamentary elections on April 28.

The vote will determine whether Carney, the former governor of the Bank of Canada and Bank of England, secures a mandate to continue as premier or whether the rival Conservatives, led by Pierre Poilievre, take power.

Carney has said he is the best person to stand up to US President Donald Trump, who has opened up a rift in relations with the traditional US ally, imposing heavy tariffs and even threatening to annex Canada as the 51st US state.

“President Trump is trying to break us so that America can own us, and that will never happen,” Carney said on Saturday. “Canada is not America, and it never will be, but we need to do more to just recognise that. We need a plan to deal with this new reality. ”

‘Investing too little’

Carney’s plan includes investing more in infrastructure and defence while cutting income taxes. He also envisions a trade diversification fund to help exporters expand outside the tariff-heavy US market.

“We’re in an enormous crisis, so we have to be able to do two things: one, hold down on that wasteful spending, which we will do, but much more than that, we need to be bold and drive investment in the economy and take the amazing opportunities we have,” Carney said.

The plan would boost defence spending to exceed a NATO target of 2 percent of gross domestic product by 2030. It includes buying more submarines, drones and icebreakers. Canada will also invest in transatlantic security with “like-minded” European partners, Carney said.

Poilievre, too, has called for increased defence spending although he has proposed offsetting it with deep cuts to “wasteful” foreign aid.

Carney aims to balance the budget within three years by cutting expenditures in the federal public service, all while safeguarding healthcare and pensions.

Brilliant Villa boost European hopes – but who can qualify for what?

Aston Villa kept themselves firmly in the race for Champions League qualification with a statement win over fellow European hopefuls Newcastle United.

Unai Emery’s side ran out 4-1 winners with a scintillating display at Villa Park to move level on points with Nottingham Forest in fifth and only two behind third-placed Newcastle.

A fifth consecutive league win was the perfect response to exiting the Champions League midweek as Villa fight to return to Europe’s premier club competition next season.

“Villa have destroyed Newcastle,” former Everton midfielder Pat Nevin said on BBC Radio 5 Live.

“A lot of teams are beginning to wilt at this stage of the season. Aston Villa aren’t. They are looking very, very strong. “

Speaking on Sky Sports, ex-Liverpool captain Jamie Redknapp added: “Aston Villa dismantled the in-form team in the Premier League. From minute one, they were excellent.

“Almost a managerial masterclass, from the team he [Unai Emery] picked, the style they played, the substitutions he brought on. Everything he did tonight he got right. “

Next up for Villa is a trip to Manchester City, another side battling to make the top five.

“Belief and showing our capacity – we did it today,” Emery told BBC Match of the Day.

“Tuesday is another test and another challenge for the team and the club. Man City is another huge test. “

City kept themselves in the Champions League places courtesy of a 2-0 win at Everton.

But with just five points separating Newcastle and Chelsea in seventh – a gap that could be cut to two if the Blues win at Fulham on Sunday – the top-five race looks set to go down to the wire.

As such, having spent a large portion of the season in the top three, Nottingham Forest could be sixth by the time they kick off at Tottenham on Monday night.

As many as 11 European places are up for grabs and there will definitely be a minimum of eight teams – up from the usual seven – playing in Europe next season, but things could change in the coming weeks.

It means Crystal Palace down in 12th still have something to play for.

How many teams could qualify for the Champions League?

Depending on how things pan out this season there will be between eight and 11 teams from the Premier League taking part in Europe next season.

A minimum of five of those will be in the Champions League, which is higher than the usual four because of England’s performance in Uefa’s coefficient rankings.

How many teams could qualify for the Europa League?

The maximum number of Premier League teams who could be competing in the Europa League is three.

Two places will likely go to the team who finishes sixth and the FA Cup winners.

However, if the cup winners have already secured a European place it will then go to the next highest placed side that has not qualified for Europe.

A graphic showing there will be a third Europa League spot awarded if Chelsea win the Conference League and fail to qualify for the Champions League

What about the Conference League?

There will be one Conference League place awarded to a Premier League team.

Currently, that will go to Carabao Cup winners Newcastle, but that could change if Eddie Howe’s side qualify for the Champions League or the Europa League.

As Newcastle currently sit inside the top four that looks likely.

How could 11 English teams be in Europe?

This could happen, but it is highly improbable.

It would require Arsenal to win the Champions League, Manchester United or Tottenham to win the Europa League and Chelsea to lift the Conference League trophy, and all three winners to finish outside the top six.
