Iran bets big on gold as it weathers Trump turmoil

Tehran, Iran – Iran has been importing tonnes of gold in the past few months as it hunkers down for more hardships under the United States’s “maximum pressure” policy.

Iran has turned more to gold as a safe haven investment for more than a decade as it weathered never-ending economic storms exacerbated by sanctions over its nuclear programme and regional influence.

But the government of President Masoud Pezeshkian, who took over after an election last summer in the aftermath of his predecessor’s death in a helicopter crash, has taken it to new levels in the face of pressure from US President Donald Trump.

By January 19, the end of Dey, the 10th month of the Iranian calendar year, Iran had imported at least 81 metric tonnes of gold bullion, according to the country’s customs administration.

This was reportedly more than 300 percent higher in terms of value compared with the corresponding period of the previous year, and 234 percent more in terms of weight.

In late February, new customs chief Foroud Asgari told reporters that gold imports earned for exporting goods have surpassed 100 tonnes, without elaborating further.

That would signal a more than three-fold increase compared with the 30-tonne total of the previous year.

Central bank chief Mohammad Reza Farzin claimed in December that 20 percent of the country’s foreign currency reserves have been turned into gold, and Iran possesses one of the highest ratios of gold to foreign exchange in the world.

Mohammad Ali Dehghan Dehnavi, the head of Iran’s Trade Promotion Organization, said last month that the country’s trade balance is again negative this year, but “most of that is due to the increase in gold imports”.

Iranian authorities have not disclosed where they imported the gold from, or what they exported to get it.

Some reports have indicated Iran got part of the gold from Russia in exchange for suicide drones. Iranian officials have not commented on the claim, maintaining that they only exported some drones to Russia months before the start of the Ukraine war.

Gold everywhere

The increasing focus on gold has not been limited to the Iranian government, which has also been scrambling to plug its budget holes by significantly raising taxes.

Iranians have long been hedging against their freefalling national currency by purchasing foreign currencies and various gold products, especially coins minted by the central bank.

Authorities have also been heavily encouraging gold purchases in recent months.

Dozens of services and applications have sprouted up, with large public advertising campaigns telling people they can turn their savings into gold for as little as the equivalent of $1 or less.

But not all of them have proven gold reserves, prompting authorities to periodically warn citizens to only buy from certified vendors to avoid being duped.

Superstition played in too, with thousands queueing in front of gold stores last August to buy based on the belief that purchasing gold on the 13th day of the Islamic month of Safar would bring good fortune.

Those people, and others who bought gold this year, are comfortably in the green as the value of gold – both driven by global demand and local upheavals – has risen much higher than Iran’s 35 percent inflation.

The central bank has also been holding a string of new gold coin pre-sales, with delivery dates of up to six months. Some of those coins have been sold at higher prices than their intrinsic global value.

The central bank planned to issue new gold certificates before the end of the current Iranian calendar year on March 20 as well but postponed it to next year.

The monetary regulator has not announced conditions for issuing the state-backed certificates, only saying the plan was delayed “considering the economic conditions of the end of the year and the stock market”.

TEDPIX, the main stock market index in the Tehran Stock Exchange, reached all-time highs in January but has been undergoing a highly volatile period as the US and Israel threaten to bomb Iran and the country’s economic woes worsen.

What’s behind the gold rush?

After Iran was cut off from the global payment network and found its access to foreign currencies heavily constrained, gold was increasingly favoured by authorities as a way to decrease dependence on the US dollar and to hold assets with intrinsic value to use as a medium for trade.

Iran is believed to have flown in most of its imported gold through Tehran’s Imam Khomeini International Airport to limit potential logistical challenges linked with transporting large volumes.

The government is also trying to expand local gold production in the coming years, as it currently plays a relatively modest role due to lacklustre investments in exploration and mining operations.

But while the gold strategy may yield short-term gains for an economy under immense pressure, it has serious limitations in curbing runaway prices.

Economist and market analyst Mehdi Haghbaali told Al Jazeera that the central bank’s gold coin sales to the public are unlikely to be very effective.

He explained that excessive money supply growth – a main reason behind perennial inflation in Iran – cannot fully explain the devaluation of the national currency in recent months, as it has been closely linked with geopolitical turmoil.

“By selling gold coins, the central bank supposedly tries to signal its confidence and its huge reserves of foreign assets – either in foreign exchange or in gold”, he said.

“But even if this is the case, the auctions will be futile. The central bank and the government’s cards are known to the public, and the huge fiscal deficit and the forthcoming trade difficulties under the new US administration are all very well known to market players. As a result, no matter how much gold the central bank sells, it will fail to change public perceptions, thereby having almost zero impact on the prices”.

Haghbaali said only improved macroeconomic and political conditions could have a meaningful impact on prices, rendering the gold sales “almost a waste of energy and resources”.

Missing gold?

The vast quantities of imported gold and the expected murkiness surrounding it amid the sanctions have led to more accusations of wrongdoing.

Yashar Soltani, an independent Iranian investigative journalist, made headlines last week after he claimed that more than 61 tonnes of gold were “missing” and had not been offered on the market.

He also pointed out that gold coins are being sold at inflated prices, strengthening longstanding accusations by local politicians and economists against successive Iranian governments that they manipulate rates to boost short-term gains.

The central bank issued a short statement to reject the claims without elaborating, only saying that it would pursue a legal case against the journalist through the judiciary.

A blood moon will rise: When and how to watch the total lunar eclipse

The night sky is about to deliver a rare spectacle.

A total lunar eclipse will occur on March 13-14, 2025, and the moon will be cast in a deep, coppery-red hue. This eclipse will be observable from the Earth’s Western Hemisphere.

Here is all you need to know about the eclipse, why the moon will appear red, where you can watch it, and how rare this is.

What is a total lunar eclipse?

A lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth positions itself directly between the sun and the moon, obstructing sunlight and casting a shadow over the moon’s surface.

There are three primary types of such eclipses:

Total lunar eclipse – The moon is completely in the Earth’s shadow and takes on a reddish hue.

Partial lunar eclipse – It happens when the Earth’s shadow covers a fraction of the full moon. The shadow expands and then recedes, but never reaches the totality phase.

Penumbral lunar eclipse – A subtle phenomenon where the moon passes through the Earth’s outer shadow, known as the penumbra. The moon appears dimmer than usual.

Why does the moon appear red?

During a total lunar eclipse, the moon turns red or orange. The only sunlight that reaches the moon has to first pass through the Earth’s atmosphere.

There, the sunlight bumps into dust particles, water droplets and atmospheric gases. A phenomenon known as Rayleigh scattering comes into play: colours of the sunlight that are associated with longer wavelengths scatter less and are able to make it around the Earth to reach the moon, while shorter wavelength colours scatter everywhere else and never make it to the moon.

The colours in sunlight — as anyone who has seen a rainbow or observed a prism knows — range from violet (the shortest wavelength) to red (the longest wavelength).

The red light that makes it to the eclipsed moon reflects off its surface, giving the Earth’s only natural satellite that colour.

What time will the blood moon lunar eclipse occur?

This total lunar eclipse will be visible across much of the Western Hemisphere. North and South America are expected to be able to see the whole process.

Here’s a breakdown in Greenwich Mean Time:

    Penumbral eclipse starts: 03: 57 GMT (23: 57 ET)

  • Partial eclipse starts: 05: 09 GMT (01: 09 ET)
  • Total eclipse starts: 06: 26 GMT (02: 26 ET)
  • Maximum eclipse (Deepest Red Color): 06: 58 GMT (02: 58 ET)
  • Total eclipse ends: 07: 31 GMT&nbsp, (03: 31 ET)
  • Partial eclipse ends: 08: 47 GMT (04: 47 ET)
  • Penumbral eclipse ends: 09: 59 GMT (05: 59 ET)

The totality phase, during which the moon is entirely covered by Earth’s shadow, will last for about 65 minutes. Overall, the eclipse will span between 03: 57 GMT and 09: 59 GMT.

Is a blood moon rare?

A total lunar eclipse is not rare, but it does not happen frequently either – there are usually a few every decade.

The most recent blood moon occurred on November 8, 2022. The next one is expected on September 7-8, 2025, and it will be visible across Asia, Africa, Australia and parts of Europe.

What is the relevance of the total lunar eclipse?

A total lunar eclipse holds significance in various ways, ranging from scientific and astronomical importance to cultural and symbolic meanings. Some of these include:

Studying Earth’s atmosphere: Scientists can analyse atmospheric composition, pollution, and volcanic activity by examining how sunlight passes through the Earth’s atmosphere.

Exoplanet research: According to NASA, studying how light bends around the Earth during an eclipse allows astronomers to better understand how planets orbiting other stars behave when they transit in front of their suns.

It also provides an opportunity to observe and analyse the interaction between the sun, moon and the Earth.

Culturally, many ancient civilisations associated lunar eclipses with omens, deities, or supernatural occurrences. Some believed they signalled change or divine messages.

In Hindu mythology, lunar eclipses are linked to the demon Rahu, who is believed to swallow the moon. Other cultures view the eclipse as the moon being swallowed by other creatures, such as a jaguar in Mayan tradition or a dog in China.

How to view the lunar eclipse?

Lunar eclipses are some of the most accessible celestial events to observe.

To witness one, just step outside, and look up – no telescope or special equipment is required. However, using binoculars or a small telescope can enhance the experience by revealing more details of the moon’s surface.

NASA also recommends finding a dark location as “the eclipse will be more vivid in areas away from city lights and light pollution”.

UPDATED: Rivers Assembly Asks DSS To Investigate Chief Judge Over Alleged Age Forgery

The political crisis enveloping Rivers State has taken a new dimension as the Rivers State House of Assembly has asked the Department of State Services (DSS) to investigate the Chief Judge of the State for alleged age falsification.

This was the subject of plenary earlier on Thursday at the Assembly following the presentation of some documents to the Speaker by the leader of the House, Hon Major Jack.

Afterwards the Deputy Speaker, Hon Dumle Maol raised an allegation against the Chief Judge of the state, Simeon Amadi saying, “These document before me simply say that the Chief Judge of the state, Justice Simeon Amadi falsified his age in service. Mr Speaker, that is a very serious allegation, and I do hope that this House takes legislative notice”.

The House debated on it and resolved to write a letter to the Director of the DSS to do its investigation and revert to the House on their findings.

In his remarks, the Speaker, Martin Amaewhule said, “The documents are only suggesting a case of age falsification by the honourable Chief Judge of the state, Simeon Amadi. What it means is that there has to be an investigation to that effect”.

Katie Price reveals Mucky Mansion trauma as she shares heartbreaking detail

Katie Price has opened up about the trauma she has from her Mucky Mansion.

The former model was evicted from her mock Tudor home in May last year after she failed to keep up her payments on the mortgage for the property. Katie had purchased the home from ex Tory peer, Francis Maude, and it even had its own Channel 4 programme as she attempted to renovate the derelict building she once called home.

But after moving out of the once glorious property with sprawling gardens, Katie lashed out and said that it was “cursed” and she had nothing but “bad memories” as she looked to start a fresh in her swanky new home. Now, the 46-year-old has opened up about the home and the trauma she feels when she drives past it.

“Everything is going so well for me”, Katie said, adding: “Moving house, being in this house, it’s the best thing I ever did was move from that house. When I drive past my old house, I get a knot in my stomach, my anxiety, my brain is like a flip chart of all different memories.

Katie has revealed the trauma she experiences when she sees Mucky Mansion

” It’s just a trigger for me that, even when I have to drive past that house. I can’t avoid it sometimes from the areas that I go to. “Katie continued:” But it’s weird how a house can torment you mentally, memories, it’s weird. “Having been declared bankrupt for the second time last year, Katie’s Mucky Mansion was sold in December for just £1.5 million in order to pay off her debts.

Last year, before she left Mucky Mansion, sources told that Katie was excited to turn her back on Mucky Mansion. They told The Sun:” Katie has been dreading this day for so long but now it is here, she can’t wait to leave. The house has caused her so much grief and was too much to handle on her own. With work and the kids it all became too much in recent years. And she’s convinced it’s haunted. “

Meanwhile, Katie said:” I absolutely hate the Mucky Mansion, even how it’s been called the Mucky Mansion because of all the stuff that happened there before. I can’t wait to get out of that house I’ve had nothing but bad memories in that house for nine years. I hate the Mucky Mansion, I never want to see it again. New beginnings, new start, reset button, I love it. “

Katie sold Mucky Mansion for £1.15 million, a fraction of the cost it was originally listed for at a whooping £1.35 million. However, Katie didn’t receive a single penny from the sale as she hadn’t owned it at the time. The property which sits on 12 acres of land was Katie’s home for several years.

After she vacated the home, the property was left in a severely neglected state. The grounds became overgrown, the swimming pool water turned green, and cleaners had to clear piles of rubbish and remove abandoned vehicles before it could be listed for sale. Reports claim that over 20 tonnes of waste needed to be cleared to make the property market-ready.

Men’s Six Nations: Italy v Ireland

Venue: Stadio Olimpico, Rome Date: Saturday, 15 March Kick-off: 14: 15 GMT

Jack Crowley has been recalled at fly-half for Ireland’s final Six Nations match against Italy in Rome, as Sam Prendergast drops to the bench.

Munster’s Crowley played every minute of Ireland’s title-winning campaign in 2024, but Leinster’s Prendergast has started the past six Test matches.

Crowley, 25, returns to the starting XV amid reports linking him with a move to English Premiership side Leicester Tigers when his Munster deal expires this summer.

It is one of six changes made by interim boss Simon Easterby as Ireland aim to bounce back from last week’s crushing defeat by France that ended their Grand Slam hopes.

In the backline, there are also returns for fit-again wingers James Lowe and Mack Hansen, while Garry Ringrose starts at outside centre after missing the France match through suspension.

James Ryan is recalled to the second row, replacing Joe McCarthy, and Jack Conan – who has scored tries in Ireland’s past three games – starts at blind-side flanker.

Having recovered from a calf injury, prop Tadhg Furlong is set to make his first appearance since last year’s series in South Africa after being named on the bench.

Centurions Peter O’Mahony and Conor Murray will make their final Ireland appearances from the bench, but Cian Healy – who is also retiring – is not included.

Ireland will win a third consecutive title if they secure a bonus-point win over Italy and both France and England fail to win.

If Ireland win without a bonus, France and England both have to lose for the trophy to remain in Dublin.

Ireland line-up to face Italy

Ireland: Keenan, Hansen, Ringrose, Henshaw, Lowe, Crowley, Gibson-Park, Porter, Sheehan, Bealham, Ryan, Beirne, Conan, Van der Flier, Doris (capt).

Andrew Porter and Tadhg Beirne, who were criticised by France head coach Fabien Galthie for their part in Antoine Dupont’s season-ending injury, are retained in the Irish pack.

Galthie reported both players to the match’s citing commissioner, but no action has been taken against them, and Porter later dismissed the coach’s claim of foul play.

But lock McCarthy drops to the bench after being yellow-carded for cynically pulling back Thomas Ramos, resulting in the penalty from which France scored their opening try.

Easterby reverts to a five-three split of forwards and backs on the bench after opting for a six-two against France. Gus McCarthy and Jack Boyle join Furlong, McCarthy and O’Mahony as forwards cover, while Bundee Aki is the third backline replacement alongside Murray and Prendergast.

Lowe, a last-minute withdrawal from the France game because of a back spasm, returns on the left wing as Hansen is reinstated on the right after recovering from a quad problem.

Calvin Nash and Jamie Osborne, the starting wings against France, drop out of the squad.

“While there was disappointment with certain aspects of our performance last weekend, we are thankful for the chance to get back on the horse this week.
