Liverpool boss proud of Hinds for ‘taking a stand’

Liverpool interim manager Amber Whiteley says she is “proud” of Taylor Hinds after the defender called out “sexually inappropriate comments” made to her during Sunday’s victory at Arsenal.

Hinds says she heard the comments while down with a head injury during Liverpool’s 1-0 FA Cup quarter-final win.

After the comments were reported to officials, a member of the crowd was removed from the stadium, and Arsenal started an investigation.

Jamaica international Hinds said it was “hard” to continue playing.

Speaking before Liverpool’s Women’s Super League game against Manchester United on Friday, Whiteley praised Hinds.

“What happened at the game was completely unacceptable”, said Whiteley.

“We’re proud of Taylor for making the stand. It’s important for her but everyone else in the game too, for every little girl out there who dreams of being a professional footballer.

” I’ve got two little boys at home so it’s important for them, too, to know that sort of behaviour is not acceptable and won’t be tolerated.

“We’re really proud of Taylor and we’re right behind her. She’s in a good place.

Jeremy Clarkson is giving away 1,000 kegs of free beer after fending off ‘financial ruin’

Presenter Jeremy Clarkson will be giving away kegs of beer and cider after teasing in a video message that he’s avoided “financial ruin” at his own pub.

Jeremy, 64, opened the Farmer’s Dog in the Cotswolds in August last year. The pub’s menu includes beverages from his Hawkstone brewery, with it even described as the first “filling station” for the brand. The former Top Gear host has since spoken about the difficulty of running the business though, including having once expressed doubts over the prospect of its investors making their money back.

He teased over the possibility of “financial ruin” in a message for fans on Instagram earlier this week. Jeremy revealed in the video that he is prepared to give away Hawkstone lager and cider to other pubs if they reach out to the brand.

Sat at the bar of his pub, Jeremy said in the video uploaded to Hawkstone’s account on the platform on Tuesday: “Right, welcome to the Farmer’s Dog. It’s a pub I’ve had for about six months now and I’ve worked out it is a brilliant way of turning £100 into about £94 using nothing but customers”.

Jeremy continued: “The only thing that’s saving me from financial ruin is the fact that we serve Hawkstone lager]and] cider. Now, if you’ve got a pub and if you want to see if this strategy works for you as well, get in touch with us at]our website] and if we like the sound of your pub – if it’s the kind of place we think we wanna be in – we’ll send you a free keg. 88 pints of Hawkstone lager or cider for nothing”!

It was revealed in the caption that 1, 000 kegs will be given away for free. It read: “Calling all pubs! Click the link in our bio to apply for a keg of award-winning Hawkstone Lager or Cider on us! Jeremy knows how hard it can be to run a pub, so we want to make it easier. In support of British pubs, we’re giving away 1, 000 free kegs”. The post also encouraged fans to tag their local pub and get them to register.

The brand’s website states that trade is “tough and getting tougher”, teasing: “Things are tough out there for British pubs right now. Jeremy knows this firsthand after becoming a publican himself at The Farmer’s Dog and having to firefight on a daily basis. And we know this secondhand because we have to listen to him complaining every time something goes wrong”.

It adds: “It doesn’t matter if you’re an existing stockist or you’ve never stocked us before. All you need to do is sign up and fill out the form, choose lager or cider, and we’ll be in touch if you’re one of our lucky recipients”.

Qatar begins supplying natural gas to Syria through Jordan

Qatar has begun providing natural gas to Syria through Jordan to tackle the country’s electricity shortage and power cuts, state news agency QNA has reported.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Qatar said the initiative comes as part of a deal signed with Jordan and in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme.

According to the agreement, Qatar will provide natural gas supplies “generating power from 400 megawatts of electricity daily and gradually increase production at the Deir Ali power plant in Syria”.

The electricity will be distributed to several Syrian cities, including the capital Damascus, Rif Dimashq, As Suwayda, Daraa, Al Qunaitra, Homs, Hama, Tartous, Latakia, Aleppo, and Deir ez-Zur, it added.

“This initiative represents a pivotal step towards meeting the Syrian people’s energy needs and reflects a shared commitment among all parties to work together for the benefit of the region”, said Fahad Hamad Hassan Al-Sulaiti, who heads the Qatar Fund for Development, according to QNA.

Syrian’s interim authorities have struggled to provide electricity to civilians since they removed former President Bashar al-Assad in December, with much of the country’s infrastructure battered by more than 13 years of civil war.

Gene Hackman’s funeral plans in disarray after unexpected death with wife in Santa Fe

The passing of Gene Hackman has led to an unexpected twist in his funeral plans.

Iconic for his role in ‘ The French Connection’, the actor was found deceased at his Santa Fe home, aged 95, in February. Alongside him were his 65 year old wife, Betsy Arakawa, and one of their pets. Gene’s nephew, Tim Hackman, revealed that they had initially planned on Betsy coordinating his funeral due to the couple’s age gap of three decades which implied he would predecease her. Now, in light of recent events, it appears Gene’s offspring will have to assume responsibility for the funeral’s organisation.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, Tim expressed uncertainty about the future, stating: “Now with this, it significantly changes things. I have no idea what – I’m assuming one of his kids will probably take over – and]plan]. I don’t know. It’s still very, very early”,. Tim, whose father Richard often doubled for Gene in stunts and is also Genes brother, expressed the familys astonishment at the news, as there was no prior knowledge of any grave health concerns except Gene’s advanced age: “I mean, he was old. I’m sure he had some]health] concerns, but nothing that was shared”, he divulged.

Although Tim had not seen Gene since his own father’s funeral many years before, he insisted that the star of ‘ Bonnie and Clyde ‘ had not become estranged from the family. He suggested Gene chose instead to live a quiet life away from the public eye. Contracted through contact with infected rodents, the disease carries a high fatality rate. The CDC has reported that 38% of those who experience respiratory symptoms may succumb to the illness.

Gene and Betsy, died just seven days apart before being found in their home a week later. The couple were both found dead, alongside their dog, Zinna. It was confirmed last week that Betsy, 65, died on February 11 from Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome – a rat-borne disease – on February 11 before Gene died around February 18. Forensic pathologist Dr. Michael Baden has now explained a potential reason as to why the couple weren’t found for so long, detailing, “I think what]happened] here is he didn’t realize it and … didn’t understand that she was dead. He didn’t understand that he needed to call 911”.

While Gene’s cause of death is stated as heart disease, his advanced Alzheimer’s is also cited as a contributing factor. And continuing his analysis, Dr. Baden told Fox news: “It sounded like he kind of wandered around, was able to drink water from…]the] kitchen sink or even get some food out of the refrigerator…]he] probably couldn’t cook anything but could eat bread or something if he was hungry”.

Medical analyst Dr. Marc Siegel added to the outlet: ‘ If he was incapable of calling 911, and getting her seen, and just sat there for a week, then he either went into a state of great despondency or was somehow incapacitated himself. Or his Alzheimer’s was so severe that he was incapable of even noticing what was going on”.

While suffering from late-stage Alzheimer’s, Gene was being looked after by his wife in the time prior to their tragic deaths – with a friend saying that the award-winning actor would have died” long ago “if Betsy wasn’t there to look after him.

The Palestinians Israel displaces in the West Bank have nowhere to go

In early February, Israeli forces stormed Nur Shams refugee camp in the occupied West Bank and began bulldozing homes, demolishing shops and tearing up roads.

Nur Shams is located just outside the northern coastal city of Tulkarem, which has been subjected to increasingly violent Israeli raids in recent years, particularly in the Tulkarem refugee camp.

Israel’s quick, deliberate destruction of the Tulkarem and Nur Shams camps has uprooted thousands of inhabitants and upended countless lives in days.

Hamdan Fahmawi’s shop was damaged and vandalised in the raids – the third time in a year.

On February 26, the 46-year-old, who had left the area, made the risky decision to return with his 17-year-old son and some staff to inspect his shop in Nur Shams and retrieve some cash and important paperwork.

“Israeli soldiers eventually told us to get out]of the shop and leave the camp], so we did. One of them raised his gun at us and we felt we were in danger, but thankfully nobody got hurt”, said Fahmawi.

Displacement

Since Israel’s assaults began on the West Bank on January 21 – days after it had to pause its devastating war on Gaza – Israeli soldiers have forcefully expelled at least 40, 000 Palestinians from their homes in the camps.

The stated aim of Israel’s new raids, dubbed Operation Iron Wall, is to root out “Iranian-backed groups” affiliated with Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) in three refugee camps: Jenin, Tulkarem and Nur Shams.

In 2021, desperate and aggrieved Palestinian youth formed ad-hoc armed groups to resist Israel’s ever-entrenching occupation, according to a report by the International Crisis Group.

However, they hardly pose a threat to Israeli soldiers or illegal settlers, instead clashing with Israeli security forces when they raid the camps.

Israel has still tried to exaggerate the armed groups ‘ capabilities – framing them as Iranian proxies – to justify destroying camps and uprooting thousands of Palestinians as part of a greater plan to make Palestinian life unbearable in the occupied West Bank, analysts, inhabitants and human rights monitors say.

“I think people]who have been displaced] are lost and they are not sure what to do or what their next steps will be”, said Murad Jadallah, a human rights researcher with Al-Haq, a Palestinian rights group.

“We have reached a new level of uncertainty”, he told Al Jazeera.

Nourdeen Ali, 17, said many families fled or lost their homes in Nur Shams and ended up staying with relatives and friends just outside the camp.

But then many were uprooted for a second time when Israeli forces raided the homes surrounding Nur Shams and kicked more families out.

Israel typically converts homes in and around the camp into makeshift “interrogation” centres, Ali told Al Jazeera.

“What happens is the Israelis will]come into a neighbourhood] and take over one random house … and then nobody in that area is able to enter or leave their house without risking being shot and killed or searched and arrested”, he said.

‘ People will go back ‘

Israel’s indiscriminate attacks are forcing thousands of people to seek shelter in schools, mosques and football pitches, say inhabitants, who add that the only help available to them is coming from Palestinians who mobilised to provide basic relief – donating blankets, bedding, food and water.

Ali believes that most Palestinians will return to their homes in the camps once Israel halts its raid.

“The way I see things, no matter what the Israelis do, people will go back to the houses where they grew up because a life without the camp is impossible for them”, he told Al Jazeera.

Fahmawi adds that most people from the camp are too poor to afford life in the larger cities, so they will return to Nur Shams even if Israel entrenches its presence to intimidate and harass Palestinians.

“Everywhere in Palestine is dangerous, not just the camps … there is no law and]the Israeli army] can shoot any Palestinian at any time. &nbsp, However, we don’t have any other place to go. We have no choice”, he told Al Jazeera.

More affluent Palestinians have different considerations.

Jadallah said a close friend relocated to Jordan with his family out of fear that Israel will soon attack and destroy Palestinian cities – such as Tulkarem, Jenin and Ramallah – in the same way they are attacking the camps.

“My friend used to live in Jenin camp, but then he got a good income, so he moved with his family to Jenin city”, Jadallah explained.

“They recently decided to go to Jordan and put their children in school there, because Jenin city is becoming too dangerous”, he added, referring to the Israelis ‘ frequent military raids that often target civilians.

Fahmawi doesn’t think leaving will make Palestinians safer.

He refers to the recent abduction of Palestinian PhD student Mahmoud Khalil by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement on March 8, despite Khalil having legal permanent residence in the United States.

The administration of US President Donald Trump revoked Khalil’s permanent residency as punishment for him leading Columbia University student protests against what many experts and rights describe as Israel’s genocide in Gaza.
