Australia ‘back on the tracks’ for Lions series
Before the British and Irish Lions’ summer visit, Australian rugby is “back on the tracks,” according to Wallaby captain Harry Wilson.
Australia ended last year with an encouraging European tour, including a famous win over England, despite a turbulent period both on and off the field.
Number eight Wilson claims that the feel-good factor is regaining as he gets ready for the start of his Super Rugby career with the Queensland Reds.
He told BBC Sport, “I think the rugby public back home can see that we are moving in the right direction.” “There is a lot of confidence back in the game,” he said.
“I feel like last year we got rugby back on the tracks and headed in the right direction,” says the Australian rugby team after 2023, when the country wasn’t in the best space.
Wilson is playing for the Reds in the UK on a pre-season tour, starting in Bristol on Friday, and then playing for Ulster in the following month.
Given that the Lions tour is in its next, he claims that everyone involved in the Australian setup will be keeping a close watch over the Six Nations.
“I can’t wait to watch it – I love watching my rugby”, he added. We will all keep an eye on the fact that we could face off against the best players in six months. It is an awesome competition to watch, too”.
Joe Schimdt’s side pulled off a famous heist against England at Allianz Stadium in November, a result that has given the group confidence following a disappointing 2024 Rugby Championship that resulted in just one win out of six matches.
“That was obviously massive for us”, he added. “We had a tough rugby championship, but I thought we actually played some good footy in the majority of those games. In rugby you need an 80-minute performance, but we didn’t do that at all.
“That England game was truly special for us,” he said. It definitely gave us that belief.
