Atletico Madrid will launch an investigation into the alleged mass altercation that caused their 3-2 Champions League defeat at Anfield when a member of their backroom team appeared to spit into the crowd.

Following a heated argument with a supporter at Anfield that led to a melee close to the away bench, Atletico head coach Diego Simeone was shown a red card.

Following Virgil van Dijk’s late winner, Simeone’s team appeared to be filmed throwing rocks into the crowd during the incident.

After reviewing all relevant official reports, Uefa, the governing body for European football, may take disciplinary action.

Atletico have confirmed to speak to BBC Sport that they will also look into the incident, but they won’t make any public comments.

Liverpool will provide any relevant CCTV footage and other details to support a potential Uefa investigation.

A fan who was yelling at Simeone had to be physically prevented.

The Argentine coach continued after the game, “It’s never very good when we react as managers, is it? ” However, managers can also become enraged and respond when there are comments about racism or insults.

He [the supporter] turned around and insulted me when they scored the third goal. I turned around and realized I was a human.

When asked for details on the insults, Simone replied, “I’m not going to go into the specific nature of the insults.

I’m not interested in getting involved in that. I must continue to be there. I am aware of what transpired behind the manager’s bench.
