In a match between the English and German league leaders on Wednesday, Arsenal held on to maintain their perfect Champions League record.

After Lennart Karl, age 17, pulled the Bundesliga team level, Noni Madueke restored the lead to Arsenal and fellow substitute Gabriel Martinelli capitalized on a huge mistake made by goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.

Bayern, who had won four games out of four, placed Bayern at the Emirates top of the Champions League standings, just above the Gunners.

The Gunners won the match after Jurrien Timber headed home from a Bukayo Saka corner with a sluggish Neuer unable to intercept.

The goal highlighted Arsenal’s unwavering skill from set pieces.

Eberechi Eze had a fantastic chance to increase Gunners’ lead, but his shot was blocked wide. He scored a hat-trick against Tottenham on Sunday.

Bayern were back in the game right away in the 32nd minute thanks to a Karl goal after an Arsenal exit that had appeared a little uncomfortably comfortable.

Former Arsenal player Serge Gnabry had a fantastic diagonal ball that Joshua Kimmich played, and Karl finished well past David Raya.

In the second half, Neuer sent a fierce Saka shot over the bar. Arsenal were soon on their best foot.

Karl then jumped down the right and headed into Raya’s penalty box, but Raya was quick to take his subdued effort.

Before Neuer saved a Cristhian Mosquera header from point blank range, Arsenal’s Mikel Merino failed to connect with another dangerous corner properly as the intensity increased.

It was now exclusively Arsenal.

As Declan Rice bore down on him, with Saka unable to turn in the loose ball, Neuer was called back to action, saving with his legs.

However, with less than 20 minutes left, Bayern’s Dayot Upamecano intercepted a loose ball that substitute Riccardo Calafiori picked up on the left.

The ball was headed home by fellow substitute Madueke after he crossed.

Bayern could not have asked for a worse situation when Eze sent a long ball over the top, leaving Neuer well outside his area.

Martinelli had a free run at goal after Martinelli’s first pass passed the stranded goalkeeper and kept his composure to slot home.

Harry Kane, a former Tottenham player, was mocked by the delirious Arsenal fans by chanting “Harry, Harry, what’s the score?”

Both clubs are in good position to advance to the last 16 of the 32-team Champions League phase, which guarantees automatic passage to the last 16.
