Arsenal have submitted an appeal to have Myles Lewis-Skelly’s controversial red card overturned.
The defender was sent off during his side’s 1-0 win against Wolves on Saturday.
In the 43rd minute, Lewis-Skelly was sent off for catching Wolves’ Matt Doherty above the ankle with a late tackle to break up a counter-attack just outside the Wolves box.
Video assistant referee (VAR) Darren England upheld the decision of referee Michael Oliver.
Lewis-Skelly is set to miss Arsenal’s next three games – a Premier League home match against Manchester City on Sunday, next week’s Carabao Cup semi-final second leg at Newcastle and a league match against Leicester on 15 February.
After the game, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta claimed he thought the referee had made the wrong decision and that it was “so obvious that you don’t need my words,” before later saying to Sky Sports that he was “absolutely fuming.”
Former officials and experts also criticized the decision.
Joao Gomes, a second yellow card for Wolves, was sent off later in the match before Riccardo Calafiori, an Arsenal defender, scored the only goal.
