After leading Team Europe 3-1 over Team World on the opening day of the Laver Cup, Carlos Alcaraz claims he has “enough battery to pull off some good things.”
Alcaraz, the world number one, is competing in his first tournament since winning the US Open earlier in September.
On Friday, he defeated Team World’s Taylor Fritz and Alex Michelsen 7-6 (9-7) 6-4. He teamed up with Czech player Jakub Mensik.
Casper Ruud of Norway defeated American Reilly Opelka to put Team Europe’s first point on the board in San Francisco, winning 6-4, 7-6, 6-4.
Alcaraz, a six-time major champion, claimed that playing in the doubles gave him the opportunity to display his signature style.
The 22-year-old said, “I think it doubles] gives you more opportunities to make great shots and great volleys.
“Duels are not just about one player,” he said. Jakub, a great player, and the team did an excellent job.
He impressed me with his skills and ease on the court.
Alcaraz and Mensik did not have a break point with American pair Fritz and Michelsen, who both had strong footwork from the baseline and good hands from the net.
Alcaraz won seven titles on the ATP Tour this year, losing just six of his 67 matches.
On the first day of the Laver Cup, matches won on the first day of the competition are worth one point each, with victories on day two and three getting two points each.
The first team in the three-day competition to receive 13 points out of 24 is the winner.
