Alan Carr was in Morocco with Cleo Rocos when a man brandished a knife at her during a night out – and the comedian didn’t hesitate to step in to protect his friend

The Celebrity Traitors winner Alan Carr once saved his friend’s life when she was attacked during a night out in Morocco.

The comedian, 49, tackled an assailant who was brandishing a ten-inch blade at actress Cleo Rocos, 63, and knocked the weapon out of his hand. The shocking incident happened in the city of Marrakesh, Cleo said, as she explained the man came out of nowhere and told her he wanted to be with her.

Cleo and Alan didn’t think he was being serious – but at some point, he took out a knife, which terrified her. But Cleo recalled that despite the tense moment, Alan managed to remain calm, pulled his friend to the other side and told the man: “Don’t be so rude.”

“Before the man could react, he slapped the knife out of his hand,” she explained. Speaking to The Sun, Cleo said she was “shocked” and after Alan intervened, they walked off at a pace, while still looking behind to ensure the man wasn’t following them.

Cleo, who lives in Brazil where she runs the AquaRiva tequila company, said: “Alan had really knocked the wind out of him – he didn’t punch him or anything but he disarmed him and he was so brave in the way he handled it. That night could have gone terribly wrong, but Alan dealt with the situation so decisively – he literally saved my life.”

She added that once back home, she recounted the story but Alan never mentioned it again. “That’s how humble he is,” Cleo said. “And I suddenly realised that Alan is a really big person. He is much taller than people realise and he is also strong and chivalrous despite his nervous demeanour. He’s a real gentleman, which is so nice, and he’s very protective.”

After winning The Celebrity Traitors, Alan has been tipped as the new host of Strictly Come Dancing, replacing Claudia Winkleman – and there are also rumours that his former long-running Channel 4 series Chatty Man could return. One source told The Mirror: “Alan’s comedy talents were showcased perfectly in the Traitors castle and it’s reminded many people just how funny he is.

“Even people who claimed they didn’t like him before have loved watching him laugh and lie his way through the episodes. It would be no surprise if Chatty Man now got a reboot – not necessarily on Channel 4 – and the Beeb could do way worse than letting Alan loose in the ballroom. He’d be a hoot.”

Viewers saw Alan burst into tears as he won the £87,500 prize on The Celebrity Traitors, as he told Faithfuls Nick Mohammed and David Olusoga: “I’m so sorry, it’s been tearing me apart.” Speaking afterwards, the comic said he couldn’t help the outpouring of emotion at the very end.

“I think all the deceit, the lying, the murdering of Paloma and Celia had all taken its toll and then I think it dawned on me that I had won such a huge amount for my charity, Neuroblastoma UK,” he explained. “Hopefully when people see how upset I was they won’t feel so bad that I killed all those national treasures.”
