The US mission’s disastrous 20-year mission in Afghanistan, its limitations, and its lasting effects
More than 20 years of conflict in Afghanistan, trillions of dollars spent, tens of thousands of civilian and military casualties lost, and the Taliban finally regaining control. What was the purpose of this US intervention, was it worthwhile, and was it ever actually successful?
The US failed to achieve its goals of creating a stable Afghan state and a military capable of battling the Taliban despite spending more than $2.3 trillion and spending two decades there between 2001 and 2021. We hear from Taliban officials, American military personnel, Afghan civilians, key political figures and experts, with different perspectives on the war goals, strategies and ultimate failure.
The movie examines the human costs of the occupation, as well as the Afghan country’s continuing difficulties as a result of the Taliban’s return. It also reflects on the broader themes of imperialism, nation-building and the enduring struggle for sovereignty.
