Afenifere Demands Nnamdi Kanu’s Release, Appoints Dele Farotimi As Secretary

The Yoruba socio-cultural organization’s Afenifere leadership has requested that President Bola Tinubu immediately release Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra who has been imprisoned.

The separatist leader’s fair hearing may no longer be guaranteed due to contentious and conflicting legal proceedings, according to the group’s statement from Tuesday.

The communique was issued after its general meeting – presided over by the group’s deputy leader Oba Oladipo Olaitan&nbsp, – held at Isanya-Ogbo, the hometown of its leader, Ayo Adebanjo.

Afenifere argued that Kanu should be released in order to promote justice and national harmony in the statement signed by both Olaitan and Justice Faloye, the group’s national publicity secretary.

The organization claimed that Kanu’s continued detention without trial is not justified by his label as a political detainee.

It is clear that Nnamdi Kanu is undoubtedly a political detainee, according to the communique, especially since his abduction in 2021, his repatriation to Nigeria, and his subsequent exposure to contentious legal proceedings in various courts, which would make his fair trial in the eyes of resolute members of the public impossible.

The communique continued, “There is no justifiable reason to keep him in detention without trial.”

Dele Farotimi, a lawyer, has also been appointed Afenifere’s national organizing secretary.

The Afenifere’s General Meeting “considered and approved” the appointment of Barrister Dele Farotimi as its national organizing secretary, according to the statement.

Afenifere argued that a single unitary police command cannot effectively and meaningfully secure the vast territory, population, and federation.

Afenifere reiterates the need for a single command unitary police structure to ensure immediate constitutional institutionalization of state police in the country because it cannot be effectively and meaningfully secured by its vast territory, population, and as a federation.
