Red Bull set to complete Newcastle Falcons takeover

Newcastle Falcons will likely be renamed Newcastle Red Bulls starting next season, with Red Bull’s takeover expected to be finalized in the coming days.

The energy drink company will add Newcastle to a sporting portfolio that includes a Formula 1 team, as well as German football team RB Leipzig and New York Red Bulls in Major League Soccer in a move that could have a significant impact on Gallagher Prem and rugby union in the north-east of England.

For the most part of the past decade, Newcastle have struggled on and off the field, finishing last in the league three seasons.

The club will enter a new era with the acquisition set to be confirmed next week, though the investment won’t be for the club.

Jaguar Racing was purchased by Red Bull in 2004 from Ford, and the team has since become a dominant force in Formula One, winning six constructors’ championships and eight drivers’ championships.

In their first season in the German top flight, RB Leipzig was established in 2009 as a fifth-tier football team that rose to the fifth-tier of the league as soon as 2015, earning them a place in the Champions League.

One of the factors that led Red Bull’s interest is thought to be the opportunity to revive Newcastle’s fortunes and restore them as a force in the English and European club games.

The other league shareholders are prepared to intervene to prevent the club from going bust and further reduce the league to nine teams, just months after Newcastle manager Steve Diamond revealed the club needed an urgent cash injection in order to compete in the league next season.

After Wasps, London Irish, and Worcester all shut down in a 12-month period between 2022 and 2023, English rugby’s top flight has a 10-team division.

You want a financier who won’t just invest a few million dollars to get us through the year. In March, Diamond remarked, “We need to look bigger than that.”

With Newcastle’s squad already in place for the following season, Red Bull’s investment should stop the club’s exodus of top talent.

Australia flanker Valetini misses final Lions Test

third Test match between Australia and the British and Irish Lions

Accor Stadium Date: Saturday, August 2nd, 11:00 BST

Rob Valetini, a renowned Australian flanker, misses the third and final Test against the British and Irish Lions as the Wallabies attempt to avoid a series whitewash on Saturday in Sydney.

Valetini made a significant first-half contribution to Melbourne’s 29-26 second Test defeat, but he was later dropped due to a calf issue and is no longer a member of the matchday squad.

Head coach Joe Schmidt makes a few adjustments for other positions as the Wallabies try to bounce back from a “gut-wrenching” late defeat in Melbourne.

For his first series appearance, tighthead Taniela Tupou takes the place of the experienced Nic White, who has announced his retirement from international rugby.

After the defeat, Schmidt described it as an “incredibly deflated group.”

This week, Tizzano “coordinated a lot of online abuse.”

Carlo Tizzano, who was involved in the controversial ruck that resulted in Lions flanker Jac Morgan, is not included in the squad, while Dylan Pietsch replaces the injured Harry Potter on the left wing.

Schmidt claims he has had to deal with a difficult few days following the collision, and Tizzano has received criticism for his response.

He’s been the target of a lot of online abuse this week, Schmidt continued.

A rugby player as well-equipped as Carlo did not suffer any serious injury, but just over 54 Gs of direct force, which were allegedly used to defend him.

He’s probably left to take a deep breath, though. We are all familiar with Newton’s third law, which states that every reaction has an equal and opposite reaction. He recoiled out of the back of the ruck when that force struck him and the head’s speed was sluggish.

He didn’t seem to want to recoil in that way, but force is what it is. Carlo should probably ignore this one, in my opinion.

We didn’t know much about him on Tuesday because he was sore, but he is back to being an unstoppable force.

Schmidt cited the strength of his kicking ability in what are expected to be wet conditions as evidence that White spoke to him last week about his retirement.

It’s a Test match, according to Schmidt, and I’m not a sentimentalist.

We made the choice because we believed Nic would be able to do the job. Nic, who serves for the Western Force against the British and Irish Lions, excelled in both his kicking and player confidence.

Valetini’s absence was described as “preventive,” with Schmidt citing Australia’s busy international schedule following the Lions series.

Schmidt remarked, “He’s not right this week.” It has just gotten worse, just like it did before. It was taken precautionary, and it is likely taken precaution not to play him this weekend.

The return of the massive Tupou will give the Wallabies a power boost, while Valetini’s ballast at the back of the scrum will be missed.

The 23rd Tupou has struggled lately with form and confidence, but he has the potential to be one of the game’s most destructive props. He replaces Allan Alaalatoa, who has been injured.

third Test match between Australia and the British and Irish Lions

Accor Stadium Date: Saturday, August 2nd, 2019 12:00 BST

For the third and final Test against the Wallabies on Saturday, British and Irish Lions coach Andy Farrell made two changes to his team.

James Lowe is relegated to the left wing by Blair Kinghorn, who has already won the series, and James Ryan takes Ollie Chessum’ place at lock. The Leinsterman joins Chessum and Joe McCarthy as Maro Itoje’s third alternate starting Test partner in the second-row, making up the other nine Irish players in the starting lineup.

Mack Hansen and McCarthy are not both members of the squad. Both were predicted to succeed, but both have been dealing with injuries.

Chessum is moved to the bench with the backs and forwards split in six-two. Lowe, who is not currently playing, is completely absent from the squad.

The two backs on the bench are Owen Farrell and Alex Mitchell, Farrell covering 10 and 12 respectively.

There is no consensus on whether Farrell would offer Test spots to some players who hadn’t yet appeared in the series, most notably Josh van der Flier, but there is no such thing. After a strong try-scoring performance in the first Test in Brisbane, Sione Tuipulotu misses out on the second Test in a row.

Itoje will start his ninth Test start in a row for the Lions in 2017, making eight starts and one off the bench in New Zealand in 2017.

The Lions are attempting to win three Tests in a row since Willie John McBride’s side in South Africa in 1974. The Lions’ team will become the first to finish a clean sweep since the boys of 1927 in Argentina won with a 4-0 victory if they are successful in winning Saturday’s Test.

After recovering from the calf injury that kept him out of the first Test in Brisbane, the Wallabies will be without their wonderful flanker, Rob Valetini.

Allan Alaalatoa, a highly skilled prop, who leaves the team with a shoulder issue, is another senior player who Joe Schmidt is missing. Following last week’s impressive performance for First Nations &amp, Pasifika against the Lions in Melbourne, the hulking Taniela Tupou takes the place of Alaalatoa.

Schmidt’s scrum-half has changed. Tate McDermott will start on the bench for Nic White, who may leave international rugby after Saturday’s test.

Axing of The Late Show reveals how monopolisation has gutted US media

The recent cancellation of Stephen Colbert’s well-known The Late Show by CBS is yet another instance of heavy-handed political and corporate meddling in the US media landscape. The comedian and host made headlines just three days after CBS’s parent company Paramount settled a multimillion dollar dispute with Trump. Colbert referred to the settlement as “a bribe.”

The Late Show will be discontinued after May 2026, according to CBS’ announcement, which would end a 33-year live-audience run.

Whether or not one of Paramount’s pivots was based on lower Nielsen ratings, however, may indicate that the decision was made with more in mind than just profit. After months of stalling, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) finally approved the $ 8 billion deal that will add to the mountain of monopolistic moves in US media.

David Letterman, the previous host of The Late Show from 1993 to 2015, criticized Paramount’s recent decisions to cancel the show and settle the Trump lawsuit. “This is pure cowardice.

The relentless scrutiny of Trump’s policies, policies, and practices by the US media over the past ten years has had a significant impact on its decline. The Fourth Estate has increasingly taken on the role of stenographer as the US moves closer and closer to autocracy, promoting lies, rumors, lustful policies, and corruption as “misinformation” and “misinformation”

Trump’s age is just the start of the iceberg, though. The media industry has been completely destroyed by the combination of the political class’s constant realignment with media corporations and their monopoly of the media in the US over the past 45 years. The concept of a free press has been severely distorted by this repression and the media.

With the gradual deregulation of both media ownership and editorial freedom in the 1980s, the landscape of US media started to change. In 1987, the FCC voted to end what was once the Fairness Doctrine in US media law, which mandated that multimedia broadcasters broadcast opposing viewpoints on issues of national importance rather than just one viewpoint. After Congress had attempted to codify the doctrine in a bill, President Ronald Reagan had vetoed their request. Over the years, attempts to reestablish the Fairness Doctrine have failed, including the Restore the Fairness Doctrine Act, which was sponsored by Tulsi Gabbard, the director of national intelligence, in 2019. The House floor was never able to vote on that bill.

Many of the remaining rules that protected US media from monopolization and the influence of billionaires and megacorporations were removed in a truly bipartisan effort in the 1990s. Only 16 of 430 votes in the House of Representatives and 5 of 96 in the Senate were “No,” which was the lobbyist-influenced Telecommunications Act of 1996, which passed through Congress with overwhelming support.

The deregulations, which were intended to increase competition between media companies and their multimedia platforms, actually extended media monopoly. Between 1983 and 2015, there were “more than 50” corporations that collectively controlled 90% of the US media market, including books, newspapers, magazines, mobile and cable television, internet, music, movies, and professional athletic teams. Five megacorporations now control 90% of US media, with the exception of CBS and Paramount and Amazon’s enormous foray into streaming services and multimedia productions in the years since.

Rupert Murdoch, the founder of Star, became a key player in the monopolization of US media in all its forms. He merged with the New York Post and founded the tabloid paper Star. The FCC approved the agreement that gave Murdoch the right to purchase 20th Century Fox and acquire Fox broadcast stations in 1985. Due to federal laws at the time restricting foreign ownership of and investment in broadcasting, this occurred after Murdoch became a naturalized citizen of the United States. Murdoch and media executive Roger Ailes founded Fox News with the ironically deceptive slogan “Fair and Balanced” eleven years later, and just months after the passage of the Telecommunications Act of 1996. Fox News’ decidedly biased far-right stance was deliberate and built solely for profit now that the Fairness Doctrine has been abolished and the need for fair media coverage has been eliminated. The late Ailes’ remark repeatedly in support of Fox News’ approach to news coverage is that “people don’t want to be informed, they want to feel informed.”

Americans have long lost faith in the Fourth Estate as a result of billionaires dictating editorial decisions in major news outlets like The Washington Post, The Los Angeles Times, and The Wall Street Journal. Over the past three decades, “fewer journalists, thinner reporting, and increasingly desperate advertising content” have resulted from monopolisation and the associated business pressures. This trend is telling when combined with the rise of social media as the primary method of news distribution for Americans (54% vs. 50%) and 48%, respectively), and also in tandem with the rise of social media. There are no indications that biased, fact-reduced, and fact-free media coverage will soon stop.

Murdoch’s strategy, which prioritizes profit over fairness every step of the way, helped to fuel this buying frenzy by allowing deregulation to establish a monopoly and usher in the era of fact-free journalism. By the end of the 1980s, Rush Limbaugh, the late president of the United States, was leading the charge with his nationally syndicated The Rush Limbaugh Show. His constant swarm of racism, sexism, queerphobia, and other hyper-masculine talking points became a source of echo for about 15 million listeners over the course of the next 30 years.

Progressive initiatives have frequently failed, despite the fact that center-left radio like Air America made minor inroads in the 2000s. In a media that is increasingly monopolized and has a biased viewpoint, they frequently lack political support and financial backing. When critics saw MSNBC’s purely centrist political news coverage as “liberal” in the “Lean Forward” era,” its executives disputed that MSNBC was the leftist version of Fox News. No, according to Phil Griffin, who ran MSNBC from 2008 to the beginning of 2021. Like Fox News, we don’t “pull out talking points all day.” “Corporations are like sharks,” he said. They simply turn their attention to the money. That’s all they do, according to a former news organization executive. The progressive tabloid Gawker was essentially destroyed by eugenicist tech billionaire Peter Thiel in 2016. Thiel assisted the late wrestler Hulk Hogan in winning a $ 140 million lawsuit against Gawker for the publication of his sex tape, angry that Gawker had outed him as gay in 2007.

It is frequently said that effective journalism accurately captures the events of the world, without bias, and makes every effort to expose the true nature of news events. If this is truly the epitome of good journalism, then US journalism has spent decades looking in the mirror and fracturing it. In 2025, it’s not just that many Americans only believe the news when it fits their personal narrative or that they don’t believe in the media they consume. Many Americans are aware of the fact that the media constantly sells lies, half-truths, and gossip in an unending search for profit, all while ignoring their customers.

In a media world where there is no such thing as a monopolized media world, what is the case with reporting on the spread of autocratic rule, blaming complicity in genocide, or questioning the ethics of billionaires and megacorporations? Anyone in the media who works for fairness and truth is easily liable to lose their job, or worse, even someone with as much power as Stephen Colbert.

British athletes battle for Worlds places at trials

Images courtesy of Getty

This weekend, Britain’s top athletes will compete in Birmingham to qualify for the World Championships.

A top-two finish at the UK Athletics Championships, combined with a World Athletics entry standard, will help the nation’s stars place in Tokyo’s squad.

Josh Kerr, Katarina Johnson-Thompson, and Georgia Hunter Bell, who won gold in the summer, will all be in the lineup on Saturday and Sunday, but they are each assured of selection based on their victories last summer.

Olympic 800m champion Keely Hodgkinson is one of the notable absentees as she recovers from injury and will have to work up a sweat to prepare for the competition that will take place in Tokyo’s capital from September 13 to September 21.

How do athletes get into Tokyo, and how does Hodgkinson do it?

The formula is straightforward for the majority of athletes competing at the British trials this weekend.

A top-two finish in their respective Birmingham event, as well as a World Athletics entry standard that has been established since August 1, 2024, will confirm their place in Tokyo.

Selection is guaranteed for individual medal winners from the 2024 and 2023 world championships, as well as for those who won a World Athletics wildcard, as long as they have demonstrated “current form that gives confidence in their ability to fulfill the performance objectives of the championships.”

Hodgkinson hasn’t competed in almost a year since winning the gold at Paris 2024.

The 23-year-old will focus on proving her fitness in the final weeks before the British squad is announced on August 27 after meeting the entry-level requirements for World Athletics with her performance at the last summer’s Games.

The two-time Olympic champion’s return has been deterred further by a hamstring injury suffered in February, which caused her to recover from a frustrating start.

Additionally, Matthew Hudson-Smith and George Mills are unable to attend the trials, where a person’s medical condition or injury prevent them from competing.

Athletes and happenings in Birmingham

Training partner Hunter Bell competes in both the 800 and 1500 meters in Hodgkinson’s absence as she chooses which Tokyo event to target.

Laura Muir, Revee Walcott-Nolan, and Katie Snowden compete in the 1500-meter race alongside Jemma Reekie, who won the medal for the Olympic 1500m bronze medal in the 800m.

The men’s 800m competitors Jake Wightman and Neil Gourley are competing against each other in the 1500m category, while Max Burgin and Ben Pattison lead the men’s 800m competitors.

JavaScript must be enabled in your browser to play this video.

Dina Asher-Smith competes in the 200-meter race in the women’s 200-meter race, while Amy Hunt and Daryll Neita both add the 100-meter.

In addition to Jeremiah Azu and Zharnel Hughes, Louie Hinchliffe is focusing on keeping his 100m crown, while Jeremiah Azu and Zharnel Hughes are competing for glory in men’s events.

In the women’s event, world indoor champion Amber Anning and world champion Charlie Dobson are both favorites to keep their 400-meter titles in place of Hudson-Smith.

High jumper Morgan Lake will look to build on her recent success in the field events while pole vault champion Molly Caudery will try to keep up her good form following her victory in the London Diamond League.

As Johnson-Thompson prepares to defend her third world title, she also competes in the 100-meter hurdles, javelin, and shot put.

Hulk Hogan felt ’embarrassed’ and ‘weak’ days before WWE star’s death

Hulk Hogan, 71, passed away on July 24th, and his friend Eric Bischoff has since revealed details of their final conversation.

Hulk Hogan felt “weak” and “embarrassed” shortly before he passed away, a friend has shared. The wrestling icon died from a heart attack on 24 July, aged 71, and his close mate Eric Bischoff has now revealed details of his final meeting with Hogan, who was ’embarrassed’ to be seen by his pal.

He said, “I could tell he was weak,” in a statement made on the podcast 83 Weeks with Eric Bischoff. He sounded worn out. Hogan said, “I really want to see you, but I feel a little embarrassed because I’ve been pretty sick.” I can’t see what you see in the mirror when you look at me, so I’ll be down Monday.

Hogan’s personality still shined through in their conversations despite his health struggles. He said, “He was the same guy, but it was work.”

Brooke Hogan reflected on their turbulent relationship on social media earlier this week and paid tribute to her father.

The 37-year-old star wrote on Instagram: “When he left this earth, it felt like part of my spirit left with him. I felt it before the news even reached us.

He’s now at peace, free of pain, and in a place that was as beautiful as he had hoped. He once described this situation with such wonder and optimism. He said that meeting God was his best accomplishment of all time.

A sweet reel of Stevie Nicks’ Crystal playing over the top was displayed in the upload.

Brooke also used her position to “clear a few things” about their separation. No one will ever hear, understand, or hear it, according to the reality star, who described the series of private phone calls.

“My father spoke to me about issues that weighed heavily on both his personal and professional life. In whatever capacity was required, I made an offer to serve as a life raft. I assured him that I was with him. I pleaded with him to rest and take good care of himself.

Steven Olesky, a wrestler legend, had actually moved closer to Brooke and her spouse because of his health issues.

She explained that after going through almost 25 surgeries together, he abruptly stopped wanting me there. Everything started to become a thick veil. I couldn’t penetrate his force field, as it appeared to be. (sic)”.

The post comes just months after Brooke revealed that she was estranged from her father, as well as her mother Linda.

On March 26, Brooke’s mum Linda shared a heartfelt Instagram story that revealed her daughter cutting ties with her eight years before. She claimed that ex-husband Hulk caused the family feud, however Brooke hit back and revealed more about the family drama.
