US Supreme Court says Trump can remove Democrats from consumer safety panel

Donald Trump’s victory in his efforts to impose more control on the executive has been confirmed by the US Supreme Court, which allows him to remove three Democratic members from a consumer safety watchdog.

Trump can remove three members of the Consumer Product Safety Commission that were appointed by his Democratic predecessor, former President Joe Biden, with the court’s ruling.

Trump was prohibited from doing so by a lower court’s decision, which was overturned because he had overstepped his authority by requesting their removals.

After being fired from the Consumer Product Safety Commission, a private organization established by Congress, in May, Mary Boyle, Alexander Hoehn-Saric, and Richard Trumka Jr. sued the Trump administration.

Their seven-year terms were scheduled to run out in 2025, 2027, and 2028, respectively.

They claimed in their lawsuit that Trump had overstepped his authority by firing them without cause. According to a 90-year-old Supreme Court precedent known as Humphrey’s Executor, the president cannot appoint independent board members without providing a justification.

Additionally, the commission members claimed that the public would lose valuable expertise and oversight if they were fired.

However, the Department of Justice has argued that the president’s constitutional authority is undermined by his decision to appoint members of the executive branch.

According to the Justice Department, the executive branch includes even independent organizations like the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

On July 2, US District Judge Matthew Maddox issued an order preventing the three Democratic appointees’ dismissal while their case was pending, which gave the Trump administration a victory.

However, Trump’s Justice Department sent an urgent appeal to the Supreme Court, whose conservative majority agreed with the president in a brief, unsigned order.

The majority of the time, according to the majority, the government was more likely to suffer if it allowed fired employees to continue serving in the executive branch than illegally removed them while their legal cases were pending.

However, the three left-leaning justices of the court disagreed and criticized the decision as a weakened separation of powers. The Consumer Product Safety Commission, according to Justice Elena Kagan, was established as a result of a legislative act, answers both the president and the legislature.

The majority has stifled Congress’s choice of agency bipartisanship and independence, according to Kagan, saying that by allowing the President to remove Commissioners for no reason other than their party affiliation.

She continued, noting that the court’s decision on Wednesday was one of a string of decisions that resulted in “an increase of executive power at the expense of legislative authority.”

The Trump administration has frequently used a maximalist interpretation of presidential authority to exert greater control over federal agencies that were created and funded by Congress. The Supreme Court, which has six conservative members, has largely supported these initiatives.

As their cases progressed, the court granted Trump the right to remove Democratic members from the National Labor Relations Board and the Merit Systems Protection Board in a similar case in May.

Marcus Rashford joins Barcelona on loan from Manchester United

As he signed for the La Liga champions on a season-long loan from Manchester United with an option to buy at the end of the 2025-26 season, England international Marcus Rashford referred to Barcelona as a “dream club where dreams come true.”

After the player accepted a pay cut, Rashford’s wages would be covered by Barcelona’s media reports, with the 27-year-old’s option to purchase set at about 30 million euros ($35.25 million) after the player’s acceptance of a pay cut.

“Very excited,” he said. I believe it to be a place where people’s dreams are realized. They are awarded numerous prizes. And I also value the club’s significance in large part. After his unveiling on Wednesday, Rashford said, “I feel like I’m at home.”

“The positive exchanges I had with the manager [Hansi Flick] adds another factor.” He did a fantastic job last season.

It demonstrates everything I believed I knew about the club, and it’s everything I wished to lead such a young team to a very successful season and come back to preseason with still wanting more.

Rashford, who had a turbulent relationship with manager Ruben Amorim before making his debut at Aston Villa on loan in February, was once regarded as a club icon and homegrown star. He had a dramatic fall from grace at United, which was followed by a subsequent disagreement with Amorim.

Manchester United has been in a period of change for some time. I’m not in any bad ways about it because it has been a significant part of both my life and my career, he continued.

“But like life, things don’t always go as smoothly as you might have imagined, and this is my next chapter, and I’m totally focused on getting better and helping the team win medals.”

Rashford’s contract was already signed earlier on Wednesday afternoon, according to Barcelona. In an attack, Rushford can play anywhere. The Barca team stated in a statement that he is “right footed, he can take players on, and he is an excellent finisher,” adding that this is qualities that the club can now display in their shirts.

In the middle of the February transfer window, Marcus Rashford left Manchester United for Aston Villa.

Second chance thanks to the Barca loan agreement

Rashford, who played for United in 426 senior games and scored 138 goals in all competitions before moving to Barcelona, fell out of favor with Amorim, who questioned his work ethic.

After Amorim said he would prefer to have a goalkeeper coach on the bench than a player who doesn’t give their all, Rashford, who won two FA Cups, two League Cups, and a Europa League title with United, signed on loan from Aston Villa.

As United announced the deal with Barcelona, United issued a statement wishing Rashford well.

The club said, “Everyone at Manchester United wishes Marcus the best of luck for the season.”

The forward, who has made 17 league goals for England in 62 appearances, said he is feeling more fit and better now that he has signed for Villa, where he scored two goals in 10 league games while United finished 15th in the standings’ worst-ever Premier League campaign.

Rashford claimed he wanted to join Barca in the middle of the transfer window when he first joined Villa.

I knew right away that I wanted to join Barcelona. Possibly starting in January. I went to Villa and had a good time there because it didn’t work out in January, he said.

It was time to reconsider. It was a simple choice for me. I’ve used to attend family clubs in the past, like Barcelona. It resembles home.

Beginning on July 27, Barcelona will host three friendlies in Japan and South Korea.

Winona Ryder has revealed how she fell for Hollywood icon Al Pacino when they worked together – but he rejected her advances. The pair starred in Richard III – Finding Richard together in 1996, where they portrayed love interests.

When I worked with Al Pacino, Winona told Elle UK, “I was absolutely in love with him.” She continued, “I was actively in love with him, even though the actor, who is over three decades her senior, didn’t quite feel the same way. He would take me everywhere in New York, like, to the strangest locations, to try various coffees because he was coffee-obsessed. I’m 22, or whatever.

I’m like, “I love you, you know, and he finally drops me off where I’m staying. I have a true love for you. And he said, “Aw, honey, noooo,” I met his girlfriend, who is younger than me, about ten years later.

Winona claims that the friendship has endured despite the fact that they may not have been romantically involved. “I still play poker with him occasionally. The best is it.

Al Pacino’s last public girlfriend was Noor Alfallah, who is over 50 years his junior. The couple began dating in 2022 and welcomed a son, Roman, the following year. However, in October last year, it was reported they had parted ways.

High-profile romantic relationships with actors like Kathleen Quinlan, Beverly D’Angelo, and Diane Keaton are among the actor’s romantic past. He is the father of his two sons, Roman and Olivia, along with actress Beverly D’Angelo and three other children, Julie and Anton.

Winona, a Stranger Things actress, acknowledged the pressure to look young after 40 years in the showbusiness world. “I always wanted to be older, and I started my career as the youngest.” I was always aware of my youthful appearance.

But she also acknowledged that ageing would start quickly as I grew older. Just relax your forehead, they’ll say. Relax . They keep saying, “I’m trying to be a great actor,” they continue to say. Although it’s nice that people are mentioning how age is acceptable, the pressure is still great. You see, every role I’m given is one of motherhood, right?

“My career has definitely shifted.” Talking of the cosmetic surgery pressures, Winona admitted, “I don’t mind it. But what’s weird is when you’re surrounded by young women getting weird s*** done.”

Beginning July 31st, ELLE UK will be offering the September issue.

EU and US edge closer to trade deal as tariff deadline looms

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz reported that progress has been made in the ongoing trade negotiations between the United States and the European Union.

Merz said in Berlin on Wednesday ahead of a dinner with French President Emmanuel Macron that “we have been hearing that there could possibly be decisions” in reference to ongoing discussions aimed at avoiding expensive tariffs on European goods.

If no agreement is reached by August 1st, the United States has threatened to impose a 30% tariff on EU exports.

After reports that both sides are close to reaching a deal that would impose a 15% tariff on EU goods, a compromise similar to the US and Japan’s most recent agreement, increased this week.

Macron claimed that European leaders and the European Commission had been in “constant contact” to coordinate their response to US pressure.

He continued, “We want to be respected as partners that we are, as well as the lowest possible tariffs.”

Scott Bessent, the US Treasury Secretary, echoed the optimism, telling Bloomberg Television that things were “going better than they had been” and that things were moving forward.

Following the most recent round of discussions, EU Commissioner for Trade Maros Sefcovic and US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick held additional discussions with EU member states.

Diplomats claim that Brussels is now under more pressure to accept a compromise due to the recent agreement between Washington and Tokyo, even reluctance.

An EU diplomat told the Financial Times that “the Japan agreement made the terms of the shakedown” clear. The majority of the member states “are holding their noses and could accept this deal”

According to the newspaper, the EU-US agreement might have some restrictions, such as those for alcoholic beverages, medical equipment, and aircraft.

However, the European Commission, which controls EU trade policy, has already put together a strategy to respond with tariffs of more than $100bn in the event of a failed agreement.

Littler wins Wattimena thriller but Van Gerwen goes out

After being defeated by Josh Rock, Luke Littler escaped with a real scare before coming back to defeat Jermaine Wattimena 13-11 in a close match to advance to the World Matchplay quarter-finals in Blackpool.

Littler, the reigning world champion, fell to Dutchman Wattimena with a score of 4 0 and then fell to 7 2 2.

A clearly incensed Littler drew one leg back just before the second break and waved a yell of joy to the crowd to assure him that he was not going home at the moment.

Littler came out of the break feeling renewed, winning six legs in a row, but Wattimena found his composure and the two players exchanged blows to bring the game to a tie.

Littler missed two match darts as the tension grew, but after the third, he once more roared in celebration and pointed to the star, which reads his World Championship victory.

According to Littler, “I’m a world champion for a reason, I find these gears when I need them,” when I pointed to the star on my shirt.

Since the first round of the World Championship, I haven’t experienced that kind of pressure. It’s my third game here, and I’ve won two of them, so I was a little anxious.

I want to return to the stage, and I’m currently looking forward to the quarter-final.

Van Gerwen started well against Rock in Northern Ireland, opening the match with a 150 checkout before soaring to a 5-1 lead.

At the second break, Rock cut the lead to 6-4 before Van Gerwen, who appeared to be on the verge of victory, took a 9-6 lead.

However, Rock fought back and the momentum quickly gained when a top-notch 152 checkout cut Van Gerwen’s lead for the first time, before winning the next two legs to take the lead for the first time.

Van Gerwen needed a 138 checkout to keep the score at 10-10, but Rock persevered during a tense tie break.

I believe I maintained my emotions throughout the game. He told Sky Sports, “I don’t know what was going on, but I did get into the game at the conclusion.”

One of the most dramatic games, “I had my heart pumping the entire time.” The strain has finally subsided. What a game.

Chris Dobey defeated England’s Gerwyn Price 11-3 to reach the quarter-finals.

In a dominant performance, Welshman Price, who had an angry argument with Daryl Gurney in the previous round, averaged 108.7 and hit eight 180s.

It was fantastic, I must say. He told Sky Sports, “I felt like I couldn’t miss the middle of the game.” Chris was put a lot of pressure by me. In patches, I believe he still performed fairly well.

“I think we were both flying at the time, and I think I was just pipping him on a few legs, probably disheartening him a little bit.” It’s a good game for me.

Why is Trump quitting global institutions?

The US is reportedly leaving UNESCO because it believes it is concerned about divisions.

UNESCO was established in the wake of World War II with the bold idea of promoting peace through science, education, and culture.

One of its founding members, the United States, is now stepping down from the UN agency again because of what it refers to as “anti-Israel bias.”

Critics claim that the decision is the result of a deeper shift, including a rejection of international norms and a retreat from multilateral diplomacy.

They add that it raises questions about US support for international cooperation and leadership.

What were Washington’s actual intentions, then, in terms of?

What effect will it have on the UN system as a whole?

Is this a part of President Donald Trump’s wider pattern of disengagement with the United States?
