BREAKING: Grammy-nominated Locked Up singer Akon arrested

Singer Aliuane Thiam, known as Akon, was arrested in Georgia on an out-of-county warrant and spent six hours behind bars before being released, it was reported today.

The 52-year-old was taken into custody on 7 November. The warrant for his arrest was issued from Roswell, New Mexico, but the reason for its issue has not yet been disclosed.

According to jail records, the singer was booked into DeKalb County Jail by Chamblee Police. The officers arrested him after his Tesla triggered a security camera alert linked to the Roswell warrant.

One officer, Joshua Rosa, wrote in a report that he found the car outside of Tint World, a shop that tints windows, on Chamblee Dunwoody Road, and that Thiam was standing nearby. Police confirmed Thiam was the wanted person running his license plate.

Officer Rosa wrote that the singer “complied by remaining calm” and informed the police that he knew of the warrant for his arrest.

Thiam was searched and taken into custody at DeKalb County Jail. The Sheriff’s Office later confirmed to TMZ that they had arrested Thiam but “he’s already been let out of jail”.

The R&B singer is a five-time Grammy nominee and rose to fame in the early 2000s with hits including Locked Up and Smack That. He is regarded as one of the most distinctive voices of the decade, having also collaborated with the likes of Snoop Dogg and Lady Gaga.

Recently, he had been focusing on philanthropic projects, such as his Akon Lighting Africa initiative, which aims to provide solar power to thousands across the continent.

He has also looked into tech and development projects and has planned his own futuristic city in Senegal called Akon City. Announced in 2018, the project was thought to have a potential cost £4.7 billion and was dubbed a “real-life Wakanda:, inspired by the setting of Marvel’s Black Panther. It would have been near the coastal town of Mbodiene and would have been powered by the singer’s own cryptocurrency Akoin.

Akon’s representatives have been contacted for comment.

The Los Angeles 2028 Olympics will kick off “with a bang” with the women’s 100m final taking place on day one and the men’s 100m final on the second day, says World Athletics president Lord Coe.

The opening ceremony of the Games will be on 14 July and the closing ceremony on 30 July, with athletics – which will run for the entire Games – starting in the first week and swimming in the second in “a historic swap”.

As they outlined the schedule the Games organisers said it would be the biggest Olympics “featuring 36 sports and 51 disciplines across 49 competition venues in 18 zones throughout the Los Angeles region and Oklahoma City”.

There will also be a ‘Super Saturday’ on 29 July (day 15), which includes 26 finals in 23 sports.

“It will be an honour for the women’s 100m to open the LA Games,” said British sprinter Dina Asher-Smith.

“It’s such an exciting opportunity – celebrating the enduring legacy, strength and global power of women’s sprinting, exactly 100 years on from the first time women competed in Olympic track and field. I can’t wait to set the tone for what will be a thrilling and spectacular Games.”

The athletics will be at the LA Memorial Coliseum, while the first medal event will be the women’s triathlon and the last will be in swimming.

Swimming has moved to the second week so it can take place at the opening ceremony venue, SoFi Stadium.

The first official day of the Olympics will also include the most women’s finals in a single day.

“The LA28 Olympic Games will feature a record-breaking number of female Olympians, with every team sport featuring an equal or greater number of women’s teams compared to men’s teams for the first time ever, and 50.5% of the total athlete quota allocated to women across the 36 sports and 51 disciplines,” said the organisers.

Love Island icon splits from boyfriend after he ‘cheats’ on her

Love Island icon Demi Jones has revealed she has split from her partner, after suggesting that he cheated on her, as she was joined by her best friend Liv Hawkins

Love Island icon Demi Jones has split from her boyfriend and suggested that he cheated on her. The Love Island star found fame in the 2020 series of the show and re-entered the villa recently.

During her time on All Stars, Demi struck up a romance with Luis Morrison but the pair ended up splitting soon after their exit from the villa. Demi since moved on with another man, but it looks like she’s decided to end their romance.

Taking to TikTok, she posted a clip of her lipsyncing to Will.i.am’s Feelin’ Myself, where she wrote: “When you don’t even know you’re getting cheated on.” The camera then showed her best friend Liv Hawkins. “But your best friend finds out before you do,” the caption added.

Lots of people reached out in the comments to back Demi, with one writing: “His loss, boo.” She liked the comments.

Demi previously claimed she would never date anyone famous again. Speaking before her break up, she said: “I’ve been so good, the Love Island All Stars wave is slowly dying down and I’m getting back into my normal routine.

“I’m seeing someone new. No… they’re not famous. I don’t think I could date a famous person ever again. He’s been treating me so nice, I’ve been on a bit of a rollercoaster, so it’s nice to find someone.”

Demi admitted earlier this year that she struggled on All Stars, more so than her original series. “It’s a very [incestuous] Love Island family. All the people you meet, you’ve either done something with already, or your best made has, and it’s like, ‘Well, I can’t go there now,'” she said.

“I was like, ‘Honeys, I’m not a size eight anymore. I’m not ready to get back in that bikini. You’re sat there with a bikini on, and your hair is growing back, and you’re like, ‘Damn, this is hard.””

Seeing her friends using weight loss jabs has made her more insecure. She added: “I feel like my body image dysmorphia has got worse since people are doing that… I go to these parties, and it has made me feel self-conscious.”

Ahead of her All Stars stint, Demi admitted her biggest fear was not finding anyone. She said: “I’m nervous I’m gonna go in there and no one is gonna fancy me. When you’re not coupled up on the show, it’s actually very lonely. Even though you’re surrounded by people, you feel like you’re third wheeling times ten.

“I think I’m nervous because it’s Love Island All Stars – there’s going to be such iconic people in there. Last time, although I was coupled up and I got to the final, internally, I always [thought], ‘Do they really like me?’ I always felt that inside of me. I felt like my energy wasn’t being completely reciprocated, sop I hope that if I am coupled up, that my energy is reciprocated.”

2027: Elections Are Won When Voters Trust In Outcome – Uzodimma

Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, on Wednesday, said elections are won when voters trust the outcome of the exercise.

He stated this at the 2025 All Nigerian Editors Conference, which held in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

“The reality heading into 2027 is that elections are won and lost not only on policies or candidates but on whether voters believe the outcome will be legitimate.

“That belief is shaped by whether they have been hearing fragmented, tribal narratives or cohesive, nation-building ones. And that is an editorial choice you make daily,” he stated.

Uzodimma, who is also the Chairman of the All Progressives Governors’ Forum, charged journalists, especially editors, to always abide by the code of ethics of the profession.

He saluted the efforts of Nigerian editors over time, saying they have accomplished much that deserves recognition.

Role Of Media

The governor cited instances where media practitioners had used their newsrooms to produce investigative journalists who exposed corruption.

“You have published reports that held power accountable. Through your coverage, you have amplified marginalised voices.

“These contributions matter, and they are essential to democracy. But what is often missing is journalism that actively builds cohesion, not just reports on its absence.

“There is a difference between neutrally documenting division and actively choosing narratives that remind Nigerians of shared values, shared stakes, and a shared future,” the Imo governor said.

“You report on ethnic tension, regional disparities, and religious conflict; as you should. But how often do your editorial choices highlight what binds us rather than what divides us?

“None of this requires abandoning your watchdog function. You can hold the government accountable and avoid framing every accountability story as evidence of irredeemable dysfunction. You can report electoral irregularities and avoid suggesting that the entire system is corrupt. You can cover political competition and remind citizens that competitors will govern the same country afterwards,” Uzodimma added.
