Who will reach Super League play-off semi-finals?

The regular season has ended. Before a legendary Ashes Test series, another Super League campaign is about to come to an end.

On Friday (20:00 BST), Leigh Leopards take on a mightily impressive Wakefield Trinity in a thrilling elimination match.

In a sure-fire roaring Headingley matchup between Leeds Rhinos and St. Helens just 24 hours later, the two teams will battle it out for the title to face either Warrington, the league’s champions, or Wigan, the quadruple winners of the previous season.

The tremendous work both teams have done over the past few seasons to improve their fortunes when Leigh Leopards face Wakefield Trinity in the first of this year’s Super League play-off games will come to an end.

Adrian Lam, Leigh’s manager, is pleased that the two sides will meet, having previously been unsuccessful in major competitions.

“They’ve made the six, it’s been fantastic. I’ve congratulated [Daryl] Powell]. I enjoy watching different Super League events like Leigh’s third place finish, Wakefield’s sixth, and Hull KR’s minor Premiership win. He stated to BBC Radio Manchester, “I think that’s great for rugby league and this country.”

They “have done a really good job of forcing their way into that six spot,” according to the report.

On their way back to the Super League, Wakefield has become stronger, much like Leigh.

Compare and contrast their sixth-placed finish this term, which included 15 victories and 30 points, with their most recent top-flight appearance in 2023, which included just four victories, eight points, and a bitter Championship drop.

They arrive in Leigh knowing that they are only two games away from a Grand Final, which is a significant improvement over the perilous state they were two years ago, and Powell sees no reason why his team can’t cause a stir on Friday and beyond.

“I see a chance for us to do something special,” she said. In sports, you never say never. According to Powell, “you look around and there have been unbelievable things done over the years.”

Whatever happens, Powell believes Wakefield has set themselves up for the long run as a result of their impressive season, which means they have qualified for the Super League play-offs for the first time since 2012.

If we don’t accomplish our goals for the year, he continued, “it helps us understand what it’s about for the following year.”

“Regardless of how it falls, it feels like it’s been a really special season for us,” she says. How unique? We’ll decide that in the coming weeks.

Powell’s opposite number shares the same sentiment, with Lam also predicting that his side might cause their own upheaval.

“We could make the Grand Final, but it’s not out of the question.” There is still a lot of work to be done, Lam continued.

Leeds finished second last year, but thanks to their first top-four finish since 2017, they were able to reclaim the top six and a home eliminator tie with St. Helens.

Rhinos boss Brad Arthur is anticipating another physical encounter this weekend as knockout rugby begins following their most recent meeting at Headingley with St. Helens, which ended in a close 6-0 defeat.

Every game, “it’s been tough] against St. Helens.” They probably owned a few more moments than us during difficult times, Arthur claimed on BBC Radio Leeds.

“Both coaches felt a little slack during the games,” they said. But it only serves to illustrate how rigorously both teams put forth and how physically demanding the environment is.

Nothing else is expected, we say. The coaches will share the same feelings. Perhaps because both teams are very physically strong, we could be a little more clinical.

Arthur claimed that his side’s demands for this season were not fully met, and that he thinks his team can do better.

I anticipated a better performance than we had been this season. If we hadn’t participated in the play-offs, he continued, “I would have been really disappointed.”

Since Paul Wellens’ St. Helens team has faced Leeds four times already this season, and they have already won three of those encounters, he is familiar with their opponents for Saturday’s elimination.

Some teams perform differently throughout the competition than others. However, Wellens claimed that the one thing we consistently have in common with Leeds is the unfathomably difficult and difficult game.

They play the game with intensity and are a physically strong team. They are extremely quick, agile, and aggressive. All of those qualities and characteristics that support team success.

“We have no illusions about the challenge that lies ahead this weekend.”

If Saints are eliminated from Saturday’s play-offs, Morgan Knowles’ career with the club would come to an end.

The 28-year-old has made over 200 appearances for the club and has won numerous awards, including four Super League titles, but he will leave at the end of 2025 to join NRL side the Dolphins, where he will work alongside former Saints boss Kristian Woolf.

Morgan Knowles’ time at the club being one of the reasons we were motivated to finish 2025 in the right way is one of those reasons, Wellens continued.

Diddy in courtroom message to family as he tries to get two convictions thrown out

Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs shared a message of pride and love with his supportive family as his team try to get his two Mann Act convictions thrown out

Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs turned to his family to reel out a “proud” message as appeared in court. The disgraced musician, 55, was at his acquittal hearing on Thursday when he showered his family with praise.

He was attempting to get his two Mann Act convictions thrown out and following the day’s proceedings it’s said he turned to the pews behind him, where his family were sitting, to share a message.

It’s thought he had turned to the members of his family, including his mother and six of his children and more, to tell them how proud he is of them and that he loves them.

According to TMZ, Combs specifically turned to his mother Janice and blew her a kiss. The publication says he told her she is beautiful before he thanked his family for their support.

The outlet reports him as saying: “Every day, every hour I get closer to coming home” and then waved at the group as he was walked out of the court.

During the hearing, Combs’ team argued prostitution only applies to someone who pays someone else for sex. They claimed it doesn’t apply to someone who just sits back and watches like they claim their client did during the “freak-offs”.

His sentencing is set for October 3. The star faces a maximum of 20 years in prison after he was found guilty of two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution. However, he has pleaded not guilty and is said to be appealing his conviction.

In a recent court filing, his lawyers have asked for a lesser sentence for the star. They also suggested supervised release with mandatory drug treatment, therapy as well as group counselling. Claims by his lawyers say it would be “sufficient, but not greater than necessary” and prosecutors will have until September 29 to recommend a sentence.

During the highly publicised two month trial, the court heart how the Bad Boy Records founder flew people around the country, including his girlfriends and paid male sex workers, to engage in sexual encounters, a felony violation of the federal Mann Act.

He was acquitted of racketeering conspiracy and sex trafficking charges, relating to allegations that he forced his former girlfriends into drug-fuelled sex encounters – known as ‘freak-offs.’

At the time, Combs had asked the courtroom to pray for his family before the verdict was read out. As he learned of his fate, the musician fell to his knees with his head down in a chair.

He appeared to be praying again after avoiding life in prison for the highest charge in his case.

Starbucks to close underperforming stores in restructuring efforts

As CEO Brian Niccol works toward a company restructuring plan worth $1 billion to revive the company’s struggling sales, Starbucks announced it will close its underperforming stores in North America.

The coffee shop made the announcement on Thursday.

By the end of the 2025 fiscal year, the iconic Seattle roastery is expected to experience a drop in store count in the United States and Canada, or a drop of several hundred.

After six straight quarters of declining US sales, Niccol is attempting to restore the chain’s “coffeehouse” feel to entice customers back.

900 employees are expected to be affected by the cuts, which come after 1,100 corporate employees were cut earlier this year. Niccol’s compensation package, which was $66.5 million last year, or 666 times more than the typical barista, highlights the cuts. According to the Institute for Policy Studies’ 2025 executive excess report, it is the largest CEO-to-worker pay gap of any S&amp, P 500 company.

Hit stores are unionized

Starbucks’s largest unionized location in Seattle, which had an in-house roastery, was one of the closed stores, the company confirmed.

More than 12, 000 baristas are represented by the Workers United union, which started negotiations last April, but they have since hit a halt.

In a strike that lasted for several days during the busiest holiday season in multiple US cities in December, some union members took their jobs.

Workers at the Seattle store, which is close to its headquarters, voted to unionize in 2022, and the union took control of the store on Monday due to dispute over contract terms.

Ridge Avenue, a unionized store in Chicago, was also shut down, the union confirmed. The union claimed that the store’s employees planned to pick up on Thursday morning as part of a strategy put forth prior to the store’s closure.

The Chicago area’s stores were the picket line’s source of the baristas. Diego Franco, a resident of a store in Des Plaines, said, “We’re here to remind the company that it’s the workers who actually bring the people into the stores.”

A Starbucks spokesman said that the store union status “did not play a role in the decision-making process.”

Starbucks Workers United criticized the closures in a statement. The union stated that it planned to bargain for the affected workers so they could be moved to other locations. “It has never been more clear why baristas at Starbucks need the backing of a union,” the union said.

According to TD Cowen’s analysts, the restructuring impacted about 500 of the company’s stores in North America.

The Workers’ Union, which represents over 12, 000 baristas, and Starbucks started talking about it in April, but negotiations have since broken down.

Attempts to change

In his first year at Starbucks, Niccol has focused on lowering management layers, reducing service times, and restoring a coffee-house atmosphere.

As demand for its pricey lattes declined as consumers began to become picky and competition was soaring, the company has experienced a string of quarterly sales declines in the US.

In a letter to employees, Niccol wrote, “We identified coffeehouses where we’re unable to create the physical environment our customers and partners expect, or where we don’t see a path to financial performance.”

Nearly 18,300 Starbucks locations, both privately owned and licensed, would be present at the end of the fiscal year, according to the CEO, who stated that the business would have closed in the US and Canada. In contrast, the 18, 734 locations that were disclosed in a regulatory filing in July, are 18.

Since taking over as CEO of Chipotle Mexican Grill, Niccol has gained the support of investors and is credited with leading the burrito chain’s turnaround.

“Starbucks is aggressively pursuing turnaround initiatives. We believe the store closures fall within management’s previously announced zero-based budgeting framework, according to TD Cowen analyst Andrew Charles, while the store closures are more than we anticipated.

Starbucks added that many of its support teams would be closed as well as a number of other open positions as well as the company would make job cuts on Thursday.

As of September 29, 2024, the company had about 10,000 employees working outside the coffee industry.

According to Niccol, “This is a more significant action that we know will have an impact on customers and partners.”

Starbucks is also making investments in enhancing the staffing and incorporating technology to improve the efficiency of the ordering process and enhance the customer experience.

Where Ryder Cup battle will be won and lost

Images courtesy of Getty

The past five Ryder Cups have ended in resounding victories for the home side.

Will Bethpage change this week as the US competes to reclaim the title that Europe so successfully won in Rome?

There are a number of reasons why Europe is being tipped to win for the first time since 2012, despite the bookmakers having the home side as slight favorites.

Ryder Cup 2025

September 26-28

Listen on Sounds

A quick start was necessary.

In the immediate aftermath of victory in Rome, Rory McIlroy called winning an away match “one of the toughest things to do in golf”.

He raised the bar a little more on Thursday, stating that Europe has a chance to “go down as one of the greatest Ryder Cup teams in history” this week.

And the final winner will likely depend on the opening session on Friday.

In each of the past five events the overall victors have trounced the visitors in the first-day foursomes. In these sequences, Europe won only half a point out of 12 in 2014, 2018, and 2023.

Four years ago, the US won the record 19-9 victory at Whistling Straits by winning the opening foursomes 3-1. In 2016 they won the Friday foursomes session 4-0 at Hazeltine and Europe never truly recovered.

Europe leads 1112-411 in foursomes in the most recent away matches of 2016 and 2021. They appear to be having any chance this week if they can reverse this trend.

overcoming the home advantage

A quick start is also crucial because it could help determine whether Bethpage’s infamously boisterous fans will change it from the playground it has always been into a “bear pit.”

The build-up has been dominated by talk of how the home fans will treat the away players.

American Collin Morikawa described the practice days as “tame,” with a large number of kids who were looking for autographs. He anticipates “absolute chaos” on Friday.

Keeping the fans subdued will be high on Europe’s agenda.

In the “walloping in Wisconsin” of 2021, the US won by ten points, the home supporters cheering on encouragement on the first tee midway through Justin Thomas’ beer-swilling, can-throwing antics.

The American players found the stands that swung over the first tee in Rome to be too intimidating the previous time. They failed to win the opening hole in any of the first dozen matches as Europe romped to an early lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

The visitors have been doing a charm offensive, signing thousands of autographs and taking selfies, but they are aware that the noise will be turned up on game day. As at Whistling Straits four years ago, the visitors have been doing it.

Luke Donald, the European captain, gave his players virtual reality headsets that could be abused in a variety of ways. A gimmick perhaps but if it provides a marginal gain for one player it will have been deemed worth it.

Robert MacIntyre alluded to controlling the controllables, and Robert MacIntyre simply said, “It’s my job to play good golf,” as his team-mates have frequently said.

Since playing a key role in the last team to win away in 2012, the famed “miracle at Medinah,” when Europe recovered from 10-4 down late on Saturday to win 14.5-13.5, Justin Rose is aware of the importance of getting European blue on the board.

“As soon as we were able to flip the script, the crowd did change, they did go quiet”, he told BBC Sport.

Donald v. Bradley

Luke Donald does not lose Ryder Cups. He won four games as a player. As a captain, one was won and one led.

The experience of winning in Rome has laid the perfect foundation for this week. With only one face in his dozen in Rasmus Hojgaard replacing his twin brother Nicolai from Rome, his build-up appears calm. This is helped by the presence of a unified team.

And he has delivered his thoughts in a confident manner while on script in New York, perhaps with a sly nod at the Americans being paid for the first time at a Ryder Cup during his opening ceremony speech.

His opposing number has had a more cluttered countdown. After Tiger Woods declined to lead the team, Keegan Bradley admitted more than a year ago that he was as surprised as anyone else when he was asked to do so.

The majority of his subsequent year was spent deciding whether or not he would make his debut as player-captain since 1963 when Arnold Palmer was in charge. Eventually sense prevailed and Bradley, who finished 11th on the US qualifying list, opted to focus solely on the leadership role.

However, he then messed up Wednesday’s opening ceremony speech. When he said, “I was 13 years old, perched on my dad’s shoulders, watching Justin Rose’s miracle putt drop on 17,” he intended to refer to Justin Leonard’s notorious putt at 1999’s “Battle of Brookline” and the subsequent contentious celebrations, despite Jose Maria Olazabal having a shot to half the hole.

A sign of nerves?

To count, what experience?

To play this video you need to enable JavaScript in your browser.

With 32 appearances between their dozen and 15 for the US, Europe undoubtedly has more experience playing.

Naturally, Europe’s players have won more points too, leading 68½-30 in that category.

Only two players, aside from Donald, who was also on that team at Medinah in 2012, are the only two to have won away from Europe.

They both came to New York on the back of excellent years, accumulating 3312 points from 13 combined appearances.

McIlroy became just the sixth player to complete the career Grand Slam by winning the Masters in April, while Rose, beaten in a play-off at Augusta by his team-mate, won a PGA Tour title in August

Tommy Fleetwood, Jon Rahm, Tyrrell Hatton, Matt Fitzpatrick, and Shane Lowry all returned for a second tilt on US soil despite Rose’s absence from Whistling Straits.

Fleetwood once remarked, “All of us on that team didn’t feel like we did ourselves justice,” which was a huge motivating factor for Rome.

But that works both ways and he pointed out the US players will “have been hurt from last time”, adding “they’ll want to win in front of their home crowd, and that’s just as it should be”.

The Americans’ standout player is undoubtedly Scottie Scheffler. The runaway world number one won six major titles, including the US PGA and Open Championship, in addition to his previous best year.

However, Sir Nick Faldo is adamant that Scheffler will be the only player Europe will fear this week.

Faldo told BBC Sport, “Scottie will be a target because he’s meant to win.” That’s a victory, if you only manage to score him one half point. The rest don’t scare me”.

Scheffler and Brooks Koepka lost 9&7 to Viktor Hovland and Ludvig Aberg in a rookie season at Whistling Straits in 2021, but they were left speechless in Rome after their respective victories came back this week.

Given that Faldo and Justin Thomas both have the best Ryder Cup records on the US team, they might have something to say about his comments.

The Trump Effect

Given he is a huge fan of the sport, it is not surprising that US President Donald Trump will be on site on Friday.

Fans, media, and volunteers are being urged to arrive early because the course will be extremely secure, and organizers want to avoid the disruption Trump’s earlier appearance at the US Open men’s tennis final earlier this month.

Bryson DeChambeau, who has played with Trump, said, “I hope he will inspire us to victory.”

“I think he’ll be a great force for us to get a lot of people on our side. Watching the reaction of the crowd and everyone will be fascinating and fascinating.

Pakistan beat Bangladesh by 11 runs to meet India in Asia Cup 2025 final

After defeating Bangladesh by 11 runs in a thrilling Super Fours match in Dubai, Pakistan have staged a blockbuster Asia Cup 2025 final against archrivals India.

Bangladesh’s batting, which was 136 for the winners-take-all match at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Thursday, completely failed in front of Pakistan’s pace bowling attack, led by Shaheen Shah Afridi.

After registering a mediocre total of 1385-8 in 20 overs, Afridi put on a strong fast bowling display by taking two wickets in his first two overs and delivering 3-17 in four overs, winning the match.

Bangladesh’s innings was wrapped up by fellow pacer Haris Rauf’s three own wickets, two of which were bowled by left-armed slow bowler Saim Ayub, who also bowled a tidy 2-16 over four overs.

Saif Hasan (18), Mahedi Hasan (11) and Nurul Hasan (16), both started for Bangladesh, but none of the batting positions held up long enough to sustain the team.

Bangladeshi fans were briefly hoped by late-rounder Shamim Hossain (30), but Pakistan quickly emerged as clear favorites to win the match.

As Bangladesh’s innings came to a close with 124-9 in 20 overs, Rishad Hossain, who had a strong showing with the ball and in the field, hit two fours and a six in his 16-over innings but kept losing batting partners.

Before, Pakistan’s stand-in captain Jaker Ali had already drafted the bat and the move almost immediately paid off as the Pakistani openers struggled to score runs.

Sahibzada Farhan was dismissed on the fourth ball of Pakistan’s innings as a result of Taskin Ahmed’s disciplined opening spell, while Mahedi was Mahedi’s one-up batter.

Although Fakhar Zaman (13) and Salman Agha (19), a quick and unhittable partnership, were unable to hit a single six.

In the seventh over, Rishad dismissed Zaman and sent Hussain Talat back, before returning with two more catches before going on to bowl. Between the two Rishad wickets, Mustafizur Rahman took the loss for Pakistan, who dropped to 49-5.

On a challenging Dubai pitch, Mohammad Haris (31 off 17), Muhammad Nawaz (25 off 15), and Afridi (29 off 13) led Pakistan to 135-8.

Afridi’s all-around heroics earned him the title of “player of the match.”

Before Sunday’s final against bitter rivals India, Pakistan will be especially pleased to see their top pace bowler return to winning ways.

India and its neighbors in South Asia have already met twice in the tournament, both of which ended decisively.

The first India-Pakistan matchup in the Asia Cup final since it first started in 1984 will take place on Sunday, which will also take place in Dubai.

In both of the teams’ previous two meetings this month, political standoffs have erupted and tensions have risen on the cricket field.

With the trophy in hand, fans can anticipate another politically charged game.

Seven Kidnap Victims Rescued In Kwara After Gun Battle With Bandits

In a forest close to Owa-Onire in the Kwara State Ifelodun Local Government Area, seven kidnap victims have been found.

Their rescue came after security personnel’s efforts caused a gunfight between bandits and their rescue.

Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, the Kwara State Police Command’s spokesperson, made this known in a statement on Thursday.

She claimed that the team stormed the Patigi Local Government Area after extensive search and rescue operations were put in place following the bandit attacks on Tuesday in the Motokun and Agboro communities.

Read more about the police’s arrest of suspected gun suppliers to criminals in Ondo.

“During the operation, security personnel encountered armed resistance from the kidnappers, which sparked a fierce gun battle.” All seven victims were safely rescued, according to Ejire-Adeyemi, who forced the criminals to leave their hostages and flee further into the forest.

She added that one vigilante officer is responding to treatment after suffering a gunshot wound during the confrontation.

Adam Khadijat, 23, Mamud Miriam, 24, and Mumini Ahmed, 17, were Oko’s rescued victims. Hamadu Haruna, 44, of Ajase-Ipo, Afusatu Alhaji Ladan, 16 and Abibat Umaru, 16, of Oke-Ode, are the other two children: Usman, 9 months old, and Hamadu Haruna, 44.

The victims have since been debriefed and brought back together with their families, according to a spokesperson for the Command.

In response, the state’s Commissioner of Police, Adekimi Ojo, praised the “gallantry and resilience” of the operatives and pledged to keep fighting against criminal hideouts until kidnappers and bandits are brought to justice.
