How ‘delicious’ Verstappen move caught McLaren by surprise

McLaren was completely caught out by Max Verstappen’s surprise at the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix to seal his second victory of the year and serve as a reminder that he cannot be ruled out of this year’s Formula 1 championship match.

The surprise came in two ways: firstly, by the spectacular move by Oscar Piastri of McLaren to take the Red Bull driver’s lead at the first corner, and then by Verstappen’s impressive pace once outside in front.

Verstappen also led the opening 20 laps of the race in Miami, but he was quickly snagged by the McLarens of Lando Norris and Piastri before being abandoned for the long run.

This is different.

Verstappen once had the advantage of holding the lead in the race. And while McLaren were left to regret some of the “wrong calls” made during the race, Piastri claimed they were aware that none of them would have affected the outcome.

In light of how the race turned out, with first a virtual safety car followed by an actual one, Piastri had to choose to pit early for fresh tyres. And Piastri and Norris came in third and third, which is the reverse championship order in which the season’s protagonists came in.

Norris remarked, “It was the best result I believed we could actually achieve today.” I probably didn’t anticipate the Red Bull to be as quick as they did.

But that’s first. It was delicious.

Verstappen actually had lost ground on the first corner, with Piastri seemingly still in the lead after Mercedes’ George Russell edged ahead on his inside.

However, Piastri braked earlier than he should have done in the middle of the track, which was all Verstappen needed.

He “sent it” with complete devotion and pissed off Piastri, a typically unaware and instinctive racer himself.

The Australian responded, “Yeah.” “I thought Max made a wise decision, and I thought it was pretty under control.” So, I’ll be clear on that when I do next.

In retrospect, “definitely would have done something different.” Probably ten meters later, I would have braked. Yes . That is it. Live and discover.

“But I wasn’t overly worried about not being in the lead,” I said at that time. But then, I realized our pace wasn’t as fast as I had anticipated.

Verstappen was even impressed by the move.

He said, “I was a little backwards.” “Basically in P3 at the time before braking. I had to travel a long way, of course, but I was on the typical braking path.

Even on a track where overtaking is as notoriously challenging as Imola, it might not have mattered if McLaren had shown the pace advantage they had in Miami, Bahrain, China, or Australia.

But that was not their choice. Verstappen’s grip on the pitch was initially strong until Piastri sensed his tyres disintegrating, so McLaren made the decision to pit him.

The tyres went through a phase where they felt like they were going off before coming back on the same day. However, it only made a change, and McLaren came in second and third.

Verstappen believed that his improved form could be explained by two different factors. Some upgrades that Red Bull had provided had been successful. However, the track itself was present.

As with his previous success this year, Verstappen’s Jeddah, where he squared off against Piastri, “has quite a few high-speed corners, which I think our car likes”.

It’s very track specific, he continued. High-speed tracks and high-speed corners have been the hallmarks of every other time we have been really competitive.

“We still have work to do,” the team said. “I do believe it was a very positive weekend.”

“Feb. 9 was still very challenging, but I believe we had a better setup for Saturday.” And I just hope that we can use that a little more frequently because it undoubtedly opened up more space for the car.

Norris remarked, “The high-speed corners have been where we’ve been going the entire season.” Therefore, we must work in that field, which may have caused some of our pain this weekend.

We’ve been saying “we have to keep working hard,” we said right away. Max has repeatedly outqualified us, and their pace only increased today to Sunday.

What might follow?

Seven races in, and a pattern is emerging. The Red Bull and McLaren are rivals on a high-speed track. The McLaren has a clear advantage over competitors in a different speed range, though.

The pendulum may continue to swing therefore. The pace of Monaco is what it is this weekend. McLaren should win.

Verstappen once said, “Montemarle is, of course, very different. Let’s see how we will perform there, then. You may recall that our last year was very challenging. Because there is, of course, a lot of low speed, I don’t anticipate it to be much easier this time around.

The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya is full of long, medium, and high-speed corners on the weekend in Spain. territory for Red Bulls. Except for the high levels of tyre degradation, which should benefit McLaren.

However, overall, McLaren still favors the math and the trend.

Because either team can win on the tracks where the cars are fairly evenly distributed. Verstappen was defeated, for instance, in Saudi Arabia. Additionally, there are tracks that McLaren are simply better at. Red Bull will need McLaren to be a failure in their current form to succeed.

There aren’t, at least so far, any tracks where the Red Bull is dominant in the same way that the McLaren has been at about half the events so far.

Although Piastri is by nature a down-to-earth person who doesn’t let anything obstruct his sang-froid, he may have been considering this when he summed up his feelings in third place.

Deadly blast rocks police station in eastern Syria, killing three: Report

According to a security source, the SANA state news agency reported that at least three people were killed when a blast targeted a police station in Al-Mayadeen, in eastern Syria.

Without providing further details, the report claimed that several people were also hurt by the explosion in the Deir az Zor countryside on Sunday.

The aftermath of the explosion are depicted in a video released by Al Jazeera’s Sanad fact-checking team.

The incident occurred in Aleppo one day after Syrian authorities claimed security forces had killed three ISIL (ISIS) fighters and taken four of their prisoners. The interim government made the announcement against the armed group for the first time.

Multiple ISIL sleeper cells operating across Aleppo were targeted by the General Security Department and the General Intelligence Directorate, according to a statement from Syria’s Ministry of Interior on Saturday. According to the report, one security officer was killed during the operation.

Ahmed al-Sharaa, the interim leader of Syria, has long opposed ISIL. He took office in Damascus in December. During the Syrian War, his forces fought the self-declared caliphate of the group.

After Bashar al-Assad’s longtime leader was overthrown by his armed group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, Al-Sharaa’s lightning opposition offensive took its toll on the Syrian regime. Al-Sharaa cut ties with al-Qaeda in 2016.

The most recent operation comes shortly after Syrian authorities reported a covert ISIL bombing plot near the Sayeda Zeinab shrine, a significant pilgrimage site for Shia Muslims south of Damascus.

Villarreal Beat Barca To Secure Champions League Place

Villalcarreal defeated newly crowned La Liga champions Barcelona 3-2 on Sunday to earn a comfortable 3-2 victory that will help them advance to next season’s Champions League.

Leganes improved to 2-0 victory over Las Palmas while Kylian Mbappe scored for Real Madrid in another area as Leganes boosted their survival chances.

On Friday, Barcelona stars celebrated their 28th league title on an open-top bus, but Hansi Flick cautioned against “those who party, can work” and chose a strong side.

However, after Nicolas Pepe set him up, the visitors were able to defeat in-form striker Ayoze Perez, who slotted past Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

Lamine Yamal added a stunning goal to level the scoring as Barca won the league on Thursday at Espanyol.

The 17-year-old arrowed a shot into the far bottom corner after passing two defenders.

Before Fermin Lopez surged in, Yamal hit the bar, soaring home from the box.

In the 80th minute, Santi Comesana lofted over Ter Stegen to give the visitors an equalizer before Tajon Buchanan had already snuck in to equalize.

Barca lost their first game at home since 2025 and also lost to their first league opponent this year, but champions chants rang around the stadium on what might be their final appearance before a trip to Camp Nou, which had been completely renovated.

To cap a fantastic first season under Flick, the domestic treble winners received the league trophy at the end of the game.

The team has a lot of potential, according to a proud Flick, who believes they can improve a little bit. They adapted to the idea of how we want to play and showed they can play football.

Everything is possible when you have confidence, according to the saying.

Villarreal’s 4-1 defeat at Atletico Madrid sealed their return to Europe’s top competition, closing a big gap on Real Betis, who are sixth.

As Diego Simeone’s third team, third, came out comfortable winners, Julian Alvarez added two and added one more.

De Bruyne won’t play for Man City in the World Cup, according to De Bruyne.

In Carlo Ancelotti’s penultimate game at the helm, Real Madrid defeated nine-man Sevilla to earn their 29th league goal of the year.

The hosts were halted by Loic Bade’s red card in the 12th minute for a professional foul on Mbappe, and Isaac Romero was sent off for a high tackle on Aurelien Tchouameni at the start of the second half.

In the end, Mbappe, the division’s top scorer, fired home Madrid’s opener from close range, and Jude Bellingham, who had just scored, grabbed a second late in the match.

“We were playing for nothing today, but we have to defend this shirt,” said Madrid’s Fede Valverde, “because at this club you always play for everything.”

After claiming a Champions League and La Liga double in the previous campaign, Madrid will compete in the American Club World Cup this summer.

Valverde continued, “We’re excited and looking forward to it, proud to represent Madrid.”

By the time Madrid are in the US, Xabi Alonso, a Bayer Leverkusen player, might have found a new coach.

The veteran Luka Modric made a strong impression for Madrid, but his future is uncertain beyond the end of the season.

Everyone is aware of Modric’s love for him, and Madrid will have a chance to decide accordingly, said Ancelotti.

“For the club, for him, and for the future,” he said.

Leganes defeated Las Palmas 1-0 to extend their season-long fight for survival.

The 18th-placed Madrid minnows face relegated Real Valladolid in their final game, two points clear of safety.

Espanyol are in danger of dropping after losing to Osasuna 2-0, and the 17th-ranked Catalan side will face Las Palmas on Saturday knowing a victory would keep them in contention.

With victories over Valladolid and Mallorca, respectively, Getafe and Alaves secured safety.

Don’t Allow Marte Fall To Boko Haram, Zulum Begs FG

Babagana Zulum, the governor of Boro State, has urged the federal government to use decisive measures to prevent Marte town from becoming a target for Boko Haram/ISWAP rebels.

Zuluum, who was active in coordinating security logistics up until late on Saturday, took a tour to assess the difficulties faced in Marte and look for sustainable solutions to promote stability.

Following a Boko Haram attack last Friday, thousands of people took refuge in Dikwa town, leaving Marte completely deserted before Zulum arrived.

The governor made a point of speaking to journalists on Sunday by stating that his goal with his visit to Marte was to promote community cohesion, resilience, and ongoing support for security forces.

He claimed that Marte was resettled about four years ago, but it has since been racked up and displaced once more. ”

“About 20,000 people departed Marte for Dikwa,” he said. This large number poses a threat because, according to the governor, keeping them in the camp could make the majority of the younger people more vulnerable to insurgent recruitment.

Alhamdulillah, we went back to Marte yesterday and spent the night there with our volunteers and the Nigerian Army. The community has now completed its second resettlement. To keep this town on the ground, my prayers are with the Nigerian Federal Government and the Nigerian Army.

There are over 300 towns and villages in Marte Local Government, but there is only one standing. If we can’t maintain this, we will lose the entire Local Government to the insurgents, which will be very annoying, and I think we will not allow this to happen. I’m therefore calling on the Nigerian Army and the Federal Government to unite and fight back against the demise of this one small town in this LGA. ”
