Female footballers might need ‘different pitch type’ to cut injury risk

Images courtesy of Getty

According to Brighton’s CEO Paul Barber, female footballers may require “a different kind of pitch” in order to lower the chance of injuries.

According to Barber, the club is looking into building a purpose-built stadium for their Women’s Super League team in order to ensure the safety of various surfaces.

The chosen location for the ground, which will be close to the men’s team’s Amex Stadium, is currently being finalized by Brighton.

Barber claims he has “convinced” that playing football on men’s surfaces can cause female players to hurt, and that he has urged more investigation.

Brighton are working on their own research, which will likely involve working with local universities, to ensure that the surface of their new women’s pitch is appropriate.

Is it because we are training them for male athletes that pitch surfaces are contributing? At a Women in Football event, Barber told BBC Sport.

“A brief is starting to come together. It makes perfect sense to get this pitch right if we’re developing it and making that kind of investment.

There has recently been a lot of coverage about the high standards on which women’s football players are asked to play on, and for us, the entire purpose of building a women’s stadium is to show the same respect for the female athletes as we show the men’s.

Stadium with areas for changing babies and breastfeeding

Barber claims that the new stadium will have more family-friendly amenities and amenities than the current one.

There will be “buggy parks” for prams to be stored as well as breastfeeding rooms, baby changing facilities, and baby changing areas.

Because they weren’t designed for women football players or an audience that follows women’s football, “we don’t have]t those facilities in most football stadiums in our country,” Barber said.

Brighton are “inching toward the final piece of the puzzle,” according to the report.

We are currently finalizing a location with the landowner. Because of where it is, who owns it, and how it got its place to work, Barber continued.

“We’re really excited and really committed to delivering it,” the company said. We’ve always vowed to be as close to Amex as possible.

Relegation, investment, and FFP

The Women’s Professional Leagues Limited (WPLL) are currently making several changes to the game’s structure to promote growth.

At their quarterly shareholders meetings, clubs will be asked to discuss and vote on any proposals. One possible change would be the temporary removal of Relegated from the Women’s Super League.

Barber says Brighton’s board should not have addressed this issue, but he is open to suggestions for improvement.

Barber remarked, “I think it is appropriate that the WPLL are looking at every possible way to promote the growth of the women’s game.”

We must take into account that if that means we need to provide owners with more security in order to invest more quickly. We need to have every argument on the table, not just that, I’m not saying that’s right or wrong.

WSL clubs “get that they will endure financial losses for a period of time as they invest in women’s football,” according to Barber, but they must also look to make it sustainable.

Because we can’t just run women’s football clubs at a loss forever, he continued, “The most important thing is that we are investing in the right things to turn around that position in the not-so-distant future.”

For those who want to enter a place, be paid well, and be looked after, “that doesn’t make any sense for anyone,” and that is unhealthy.

“We need to build a business that is financially sound for the future.”

When asked whether Financial Fair Play requirements should be included in the WSL, Barber responded that he believes there must be a balance between limiting investment and preventing losses. It’s very challenging.

The key is to pick up as many men’s game lessons as possible to prevent football teams from adopting more precautionary positions.

‘I fought so hard to be back’ – Jones on injury woes

Wales vs. England at the Women’s Six Nations

Cardiff Principality Stadium Date: Saturday, March 29 Kick-off: 16:45 GMT

It’s difficult to miss one Premiership Women’s Rugby final due to injury, but missing two is just cruel.

Kelsey Jones, a Wales hooker, watched Gloucester-Hartpury win three straight titles earlier this month, completing the “threepeat” with a victory over Saracens.

Jones missed the 2024 showpiece because she had a disc removed in her neck while recovering from a serious knee injury in May.

“They are the times when I want to be on the field, and the business end of the season is probably when I enjoy rugby the most.”

Due to her involvement in the first final at the start of the season, Jones claimed that being forced to miss the first final was “probably the hardest.”

I simply knew it wasn’t possible for me to be there this time around, she continued. I just assumed a different role.

“It was utterly crazy in the shed, supporting my friends as loudly as I could, cheering them on.”

It was still a wonderful experience, but it was also bittersweet.

In the Women’s Six Nations, Jones made her comeback to action last Saturday, playing off the bench in Wales’ opening-round defeat to Scotland.

She cited the support of her family, friends, and team-mates as saying, “I fought so hard to try to be back.”

Gwenllian Pyrs and Donna Rose, two other front-row stalwarts from Wales, joined Jones in making the weekend’s return.

Both have neck surgery scars, just like Jones.

For Sale Sharks loose-head Pyrs, Scotland was their first appearance since undergoing surgery in November, which involved disc replacement and disc fusion, while Saracens tight-head Rose underwent a similar procedure in December.

After watching WXV [last October], we decided it was time to work and then we had enough time to recover for the Six Nations, according to Pyrs, who scored a try on her return in Edinburgh.

Playing on, however, was not an option for Rose.

I had been playing through it for a while, denying to myself how awful it actually was, before I realized I needed to tell myself, “You do need this surgery, let’s be honest here,” Rose said.

I was kind of of the impression that if I admit to hurting my neck, it will end up being a career-ending injury. I thought about it and endured the pain, but I still manage to stay fit and ready to leave today.

When Jones questioned whether her long-term physical reliance as a first-row forward preyed on her, Jones said that injury was “part and parcel of the sport.”

You are aware that playing rugby involves risks, but I don’t believe I’d make any changes. I’m here, living in the best possible way. When I get there, I’ll be worried about how much I adore it.

The accomplished trio, who have won over 100 caps, are expected to feature on Saturday against England at the Principality Stadium.

The game has already broken the previous record for a standalone women’s international rugby match in Wales with more than 12 000 sold.

How the discovery of a mass grave sparked uproar over the missing in Mexico

Since the revelation on March 5, Mexican media has collected numerous testimony from those who claim to have escaped Rancho Izaguirre or survived.

Many of those who spoke out made the decision to remain anonymous. They described how they were lured to the ranch from Guadalajara by false job promises in online advertisements or simply kidnapped.

One young man claimed that the ranch had been “hitman school.” Those who criticized, questioned, or failed to pass the harsh tests were put to death.

One survivor referred to it as “a little school of terror,” according to Indira Navarro, the leader of the Warrior Searchers of Jalisco, in a radio interview.

[Jared Olson/Al Jazeera] A protester lights a candle next to a pair of missing shoes on March 15.

Other documents have emerged that suggest that the town’s local authorities may have been unaware of the site’s existence but ignored it.

A report released on March 12 by the advocacy group Mexicans Against Corruption and Impunity revealed that National Guard personnel had burned bodies in the same area in August 2019.

Additionally, it discovered that a regional police commissioner had attempted to bribe the National Guard by sending them a message in March 2020.

An anonymous female caller claimed that National Guard personnel would receive money in exchange “for reducing the intensity of the operations” in the area.

The highest official number of forced disappearances in Mexico is found in Jalisco. More than 15, 000 people have been reported missing in the state alone since the government began collecting data on disappearances in the 1950s.

The Teuchitlán site has been heavily inspected, but the state attorney general, Salvador Gonzalez de los Santos, claimed the area is too large to search in its entirety because of the recent uproar.

The federal government has since pointed the finger at local authorities for failing to conduct thorough investigations.

At a press conference on March 19th, Mexico Attorney General Alejandro Gertz Manero stated that “they failed to locate the evidence or identify anything that was discovered abandoned there.” No fingerprints or a full examination of the site were taken.

Federal and state authorities conducted a tour of the site for journalists, officials, and search team members on March 20. More than 12 buses, some with social media influencers, arrived.

However, the visit received a lot of negative reviews, not the least of which were for allowing the public to enter a persistent crime scene.

The disappearing family members also questioned why the influencers allegedly had access to the ranch before they were. Later, some of the influencers wrote online accounts disputing the existence of crematoriums on the site.

Meanwhile, President Sheinbaum has ordered federal prosecutors to begin the investigation under the leadership of Gertz Manero.

“The first thing we need to do is investigate, because the images are painful, and what happened there, before anything else,” she said.

However, some critics worry that the investigation’s leadership can be attributed to the federal authorities. After all, Sheinbaum’s mentor, former president Andrés Manuel López Obrador, was the man who founded the National Guard in 2019.

Federal authorities announced progress in their investigation on Monday, though.

They confirmed that a recruiter for the Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generación was being detained in a low-income neighborhood of Mexico City and that he had allegedly arranged for youths to be transported to the “extermination site.”

In addition to the ranch, two former police officers from a nearby village were detained.

However, reports from academics and investigative journalists suggest that the Teuchitlán ranch is a large network of training facilities in the mountains west of Guadalajara.

A separate search team announced on March 12 that it had discovered another “extermination site,” this time in Reynosa, Tamaulipas.

Police stand guard outside the National Palace in Mexico City, their riot shields spray-painted with the word
As protests take place on March 15 [Jared Olson/Al Jazeera] in Mexico City, police patrol the National Palace.

As the evening dipped, tensions started to escalate at the most recent protest at the Zócalo. In front of the National Palace, some demonstrators fought with police who were holding riot shields, breaking through barricades.

“Mercenaries! ” Killers”! They yelled at the president of Mexico’s palace, which is its official residence.

Sebastián Arenas, a journalist at the National Autonomous University of México, claimed that many of his fellow protesters believed Teuchitlán to be a sign of a nationwide mass murder plot.

According to him, “in the press, it’s said that things have changed in Mexico, that there aren’t disappearances, or that they’re going down, that the judicial reform is going to bring justice.”

Coronation Street legend Simon Gregson has sparked concern over his marriage after appearing to ditch his wedding ring. The actor, 50, who plays Steve McDonald on the ITV soap, has been married to wife Emma for 14 years.

Simon fuelled split rumours earlier this year when a tax report regarding his finances said the star and his “estranged” wife, had three years to pay back debt from their production company’s account. And he’s now got tongues wagging again after appearing without his wedding band while out running errands after Emma was spotted without hers last month.

The star’s alleged relationship with his ex-wife was revealed in official documents after his fans expressed concern about her.

The Mirror previously reported the Steve McDonald star could be forced to sell his house if he does not pay back a £252,000 loan he took from his production firm, with official papers showing the soap legend and Emma must repay Simon Gregson Productions a sum of £1,500 per month. The paperwork states the pair, who have been married for 14 years and have three sons, had separated. However, Coronation Street confirmed last week that the couple was still together.

The director’s report stated that she had an overdraft of £282,824 on her loan account. Additionally, it was discovered that this money had been moved into Mr. Gregory’s joint bank account with his estranged wife after being taken out of the company’s bank account. Any dispute would therefore be directed at both parties.

The couple revealed their relationship to one of his soap star coworkers last year. Emma continued, “I used to go to Bev’s pub with my brother Michael and she was running a singing competition called Eccles Factor,” adding, “We met 18 years ago in the pub in Eccles owned at the time by Beverley Callard.

Because he likes you and is single, Bev asked if I liked him. When Simon and Emma ran into each other at a charity event a few weeks later, they have been dating ever since.

She’s conquered telly, now This Morning favourite Alison Hammond has her sights set on cracking Hollywood. The presenter said she’d love to play a superhero – and she reveals the movie star she almost dated.

“I’ve always wanted to be a Hollywood actress,” she revealed. “Have I done it yet? No. But give me a call, Marvel. I’m ready for my close up.” Brummie Alison, who rose to fame on the 2002 series of Big Brother, teased an exciting encounter with one huge name. Opening up about her biggest regret, she said: “Not swiping right on Idris Elba when I had the chance (kidding… or am I?)”

The Great British Bake Off host, 50, is now one of the most in-demand stars on the box and became the new face of For the Love of Dogs following the death of Paul O’Grady. She currently presents ITV’s This Morning on a Friday with co-host Dermot O’Leary and is also a team captain on Rob Beckett’s Smart TV for Sky. Earlier this year her new travel series: Florida Unpacked, went out on BBC Two. It saw her travel the US state with son Aidan.

For years Alison worked as a tour rep following in the footsteps of her mother, who was a hard-working, no-nonsense travel agent. She says she owes her success down to “being unapologetically me” and her mother. Asked about her biggest influence, she said: “Without a doubt, my mum. She taught me to laugh loud, love big and always be myself. And look where that’s got me – This Morning, Bake Off, three books, working with Maybelline…”

Alison also had a dream in Hollywood. “I’d be there in a flash if I ever received the call to join her (Dua Lipa) on stage for Physical.”

Alison says there needs to be much more done to increase representation in the sector, despite the opportunities that are opening up for her. She urged more diversity in television by calling for more voices, stories, and actors from various backgrounds to shine. Although there is still work to be done, the industry is awakening.

Alison earned a huge sum last year, making around £35,000 per week after landing a series of lucrative deals. Host Alison also has money spinning jobs like being the voice of Wren Kitchens which bring in thousands of pounds. The host also has a deal with online firm Very.

After the TV showman reportedly booked him for a £150 massage, the mother-of-one has been dating David Putnam, 27. Before even meeting model David, artist Art began imitating life after writing in her book Bombshell about a woman dating a 27-year-old. She and Noureddine Boufaied, the mother of Aidan, 19, were married before splitting up, but they never reconciled.

The jobs just keep rolling in for Alison, as she’s reportedly being lined up to host the reboot of cult BBC series Hole In The Wall. The original show, which aired from 2008 to 2009, featured celebrities trying to fit through moving wall cut-outs to avoid being pushed into a pool of water. It was previously hosted by Dale Winton, with Strictly Come Dancing star Anton Du Beke later taking over. The BBC is yet to announce an official air date for the Hole In The Wall reboot, but if the pilot proves successful, it’s expected to make a comeback later this year.
