Huge movie star to replace Dame Maggie Smith in brand new Harry Potter series

A top Netflix actress is rumoured to be in discussions to replace the late Dame Maggie Smith as Professor McGonagall in HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series.

Janet McTeer, an Oscar and Emmy-nominated actress, could be the new face of the beloved Hogwarts deputy headmistress, according to Deadline. The 63 year old actress is best known for her role in the 2000 comedy Tumbleweed and as attorney Helen Piece in the popular TV show Ozark. Meanwhile, Paapa Essiedu is reportedly finalising his deal to play Severus Snape, originally portrayed by Alan Rickman.

The 34 year old actor has been involved in projects such as The Lazarus Project and Gangs Of London. HBO recently stated: “We appreciate that such a high-profile series will draw a lot of rumour and speculation. As we make our way through pre-production, we will only confirm details as we finalise deals”.

John Lithgow is currently the only confirmed cast member, announcing he will be playing Albus Dumbledore in the HBO series. The 79 year old actor expressed surprise at being chosen to fill the shoes of the magical headmaster, a role first played by Richard Harris and Michael Gambon.

“It’s a new chapter of my life. I’m afraid”, he confessed, “But I’m very excited. Some wonderful people are turning their attention back to Harry Potter. That’s why it’s been such a hard decision. I’ll be about 87 years old at the wrap party, but I’ve said yes”.

Dumbledore, the fictional headmaster of Hogwarts and a mentor to Harry Potter, is one of the most cherished characters among fans of Rowling’s original books and the film series. However, not all die-hard fans were thrilled with his casting, arguing that a British actor should have landed the role, not an American, as per the original films.

On X, fans expressed their disappointment: “I can’t understand why John Lithgow is the new Albus Dumbledore in the Harry Potter HBO series. Dumbledore is British, Lithgow is from the USA”. Another said: “Nothing against John Lithgow, but Dumbledore and the whole Harry Potter franchise is British”.

A third commented: “I love John Lithgow. Absolutely bananas they’re not hiring a British actor to play Dumbledore”. A fourth chimed in: “WarnerBros quite literally need to pull something out of their hat to save Harry Potter. John Lithgow as Dumbledore certainly feels like it’s going to put a lot of people off wanting to watch it. Whatever happened to keeping it all British”?

The new Harry Potter television series promises a deeper exploration of the wizarding world and could run for up to 10 years.

Last month, Coleen penned an emotional tribute to her sister Linda on the day she would have turned 66. The Loose Women star lost her beloved sister Linda in January following a courageous battle with cancer. Linda, a member of the renowned pop group The Nolans, passed away at the age of 65.

Pulse win inaugural Netball Super Cup as Forest impress

London Pulse beat Leeds Rhinos to win the inaugural Netball Super Cup at Sheffield’s Utilita Arena.

Pulse’s Olivia Tchine scored 16 points in the final, which the London club won 20-15.

The standalone competition took place before the Netball Super League (NSL) starts on 14 March.

“I am so proud of the girls, so excited”, player of the final and Pulse captain Zara Everitt told Sky Sports.

“In previous years we have just missed out, we know this isn’t the league trophy but it gives us a taste of, hopefully, what is to come”.

The format throughout the one-day competition saw each game last 14 minutes, rather than the usual 60.

Manchester Thunder and Leeds Rhinos topped the two groups after each team had played three matches.

Despite their great form all day, Thunder narrowly lost 17-16 to Pulse in the semi-final thanks to great late defending by Pulse’s Funmi Fadoju.

As play got under way in the final, Pulse goal shooter Tchine was a standout performer, scoring three in a row to cancel out Leeds shooter Joyce Mvula’s early score.

Rhinos captain Bethany Brittain hit back next but Nichole Breedt then slotted in a super shot – a new rule which in the new season will allow shooters to score two points from a dedicated area on the edge of the shooting circle during the last five minutes of each of the four quarters of every match.

Scores flew back and forth but Pulse gained a 12-6 lead at half-time.

Leeds looked as though they were staging a comeback, particularly through the skill of Sophie Egbaran in the second half.

However, Tchine kept the scoreboard ticking to give Pulse the title.

Nottingham Forest take their bow

Nottingham Forest, along with Birmingham Panthers, are one of two new franchises admitted to the NSL this season.

The Super Cup was both teams ‘ first time on court in official competition against their rival top-flight clubs and Forest thoroughly impressed, beating the likes of London Mavericks to reach the semi-finals.

The entry into the league of Forest, who are backed by the Premier League football club, was part of a move that saw Team Bath, Strathclyde Sirens, Surrey Storm and Severn Stars cut from the top tier.

It marks the start of a new chapter for domestic netball in the UK in the first campaign as the division moves towards professionalisation.

The top-flight has also introduced new rules for the upcoming campaign including the super shot and no draws.

Forest’s first game in the NSL is against Pulse on 16 March and will be shown live on the BBC.
