Trump says imposing 50-percent tariffs on Canadian steel, aluminium

US President Donald Trump has announced he will double planned tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminium imports to 50 percent, escalating a trade war with the United States’s northern neighbour.

In a social media post on Tuesday morning, Trump said the increased tariffs come in response to a decision by the province of Ontario to put a 25-percent surcharge on electricity exports to some US states.

He said the increased tariffs on steel and aluminium would come into effect on Wednesday.

“The only thing that makes sense is for Canada to become our cherished Fifty First State. This would make all Tariffs, and everything else, totally disappear”, Trump wrote on Truth Social.

US-Canada relations have plummeted amid Trump’s push to impose steep tariffs on a range of Canadian goods and his repeated threats to annex the country.

The US president has said the tariffs – some of which came into effect last week – are part of an effort to balance the countries ‘ trade relationship. However, the Canadian government has rejected the measures as “unjustified” and unveiled retaliatory levies.

On Monday, Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced that his government would impose a 25-percent surcharge on electricity exports to the US states of Michigan, Minnesota and New York.

Ford – who has taken a strong line against Trump’s economic policies – told reporters that Ontario electricity powers 1.5 million American homes and businesses in those US states.

The surcharge, the premier said, would cost families and businesses as much as $276, 000 (400, 000 Canadian dollars) per day.

“Let me be clear, I will not hesitate to increase this charge. If necessary, if the United States escalates, I will not hesitate to shut the electricity off completely”, Ford said.

The US stock market plunged this week amid the uncertainty around Trump’s economic and trade policies.

Canada and the US are major trading partners, with the US importing $412.7bn from its northern neighbour in 2024, according to the Office of the US Trade Representative. American exports to Canada that same year totalled $349.4bn.

Canada tops the list of foreign suppliers of both steel and aluminium to the US, with imports of $19.5bn last year, according to data from S&amp, P Global.

“While steel represents a significant portion of total US imports, the country depends far more on Canadian aluminum to meet domestic demand”, the Canadian Chamber of Commerce said in a recent factsheet.

It said US tariffs on steel and aluminium could lead to job losses in Canada, while retaliatory measures by the Canadian government could raise prices for consumers.

Despite concerns that a prolonged trade war with Canada could raise prices for Americans and hurt the US economy, the Trump administration has defended its tariff policy as necessary to close a trade deficit between the two countries.

In his Truth Social post on Tuesday, Trump warned Canada that if it did not drop its tariffs on US goods, his administration would increase planned reciprocal levies set to take effect in early April.

That “will, essentially, permanently shut down the automobile manufacturing business in Canada”, Trump said.

“Those cars can easily be made in the USA! Also, Canada pays very little for National Security, relying on the United States for military protection. We are subsidizing Canada to the tune of more than 200 Billion Dollars a year. WHY??? This cannot continue”.

Larry Summers, a veteran economist and former US Treasury secretary, slammed the increased tariffs as Trump’s “worst trade policy yet”.

“Increasing the price of key inputs for the US manufacturing industries–who employ 10 million people–is what a US adversary would do”, Summers wrote on X. “It is a self-inflicted wound to the US economy that we cannot afford, at a moment when recession risks are rising”.

The Canadian government did not immediately comment on Trump’s announcement.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is expected to formally step down in the coming days to allow the new leader of his governing Liberal Party, Mark Carney, to step in as the country’s next prime minister.

Carney has promised to take on Trump and deepen Canada’s relationships with other trading partners.

“We didn’t ask for this fight, but Canadians are always ready when someone else drops the gloves”, he said during his Liberal leadership victory speech on Sunday.

Victoria Beckham delivers perfect curtsy as she meets Camilla at Buckingham Palace

Posh Spice lived up to her name today as she spent some time with Queen Consort Camilla Parker Bowles at Buckingham Palace.

Victoria Beckham, 50, rubbed shoulders with the likes of Loose Women star Penny Lancaster as King Charles ‘ wife hosted an event to mark the 15th anniversary of Women of the World (WOW).

The singer-turned-designernailed the royal curtsy as she was greeted by Camilla at the swanky event, wearing a teal-coloured satin gown for the fancy occasion. Other notable guests at the palace included Sarah Lancashire, Ruth Jones, Ruby Wax and Cherie Blair.

The guests were handpicked to honour women who are leaders in their respective fields, from arts to education and business, along with staff members of WOW. During the reception, the Queen engaged in conversation with the attendees before delivering a speech to commemorate the event.

Victoria’s meeting with Camilla comes just months on from her husband David Beckham being snubbed for a knighthood once again. In December, it was revealed that the Manchester United and England legend had been overlooked in the 2025 New Year’s honours list

The snub could be due to the controversy from over seven years ago when he lambasted the honours committee in a leaked email for leaving him out. In the emails, Beckham allegedly called the honours committee “unappreciative c***s” and expressed indifference about being knighted, although he has suggested some of the content was doctored.

The leaked correspondence includes Beckham reportedly stating: “I expected nothing less. It’s a disgrace to be honest and if I was American I would of got something like this 10 years ago”. It’s been reported that David had a go at opera singer Katherine Jenkins for receiving an OBE in the emails regarding her honour.

A source close to David told The Mirror in 2017 that while Beckham remains composed amid the controversy because he knows his substantial contributions to UNICEF, “But he is just saddened that people would question all of that work. Genuinely, he wasn’t as vitriolic as that, but you do say some things in private and in the heat of the moment”.

They added that David feels his dedication to his country goes above and beyond: “To be honest, he does feel that he has given so much to his country. And sometimes you say things in private that anyone would say and you don’t really mean it. While he was frustrated in those emails, he was over it the moment he sent them. Getting the knighthood is not what his work is about. He doesn’t care if he gets a knighthood or not”.

Meghan Markle needs to pick one of two options to recover from panned Netflix show, expert says

Meghan Markle has two options if she wants to move past her brutal Netflix show reviews, an expert has warned.

It has been a week since With Love, Meghan hit the streaming platform showing the Duchess of Sussex share tips and tricks when it comes to cooking and hosting. But the eight-part series, which sees her joined by a string of celebrity friends, has been savaged by critics, with some claiming it is ‘ boring’.

The show had been viewed as a make-or-break moment for the Sussexes, who signed a multimillion-pound deal with Netflix in 2020. However, it was revealed that it will be returning for a second season in the autumn with filming for it already taking place.

With more episodes in the pipeline and her lifestyle brand selling jam and flower sprinkles still to come, PR expert Ed Coram-James has revealed how Meghan can shake off the criticism. And he told the Mirror there are two roads she can take – either do nothing or re-evaluate her role in the show.

He explained: “On With Love, Meghan, the duchess is glowing, surrounded by seemingly close friends and family, in stunning Montecito, which she calls home. She seems happy — it’s her passion project — she’s experimenting and is lucky enough to have the resources and platform to share her passion.

” Some people have compared her to Brooklyn Beckham, not knowing his forte, but experimenting with everything from cooking to photography, and I don’t think this is a bad thing at all.

“Perhaps she simply won’t care about the reviews and expected bad feedback if she has any self-awareness. It might be best to simply ignore them and continue doing what she does best: making headlines as she continues her journey post-royal life”.

But Ed, CEO of Go Up, believes that the poor reviews will sting for Meghan and she should attempt to “reframe the narrative”. He explained: “Meghan has experience pivoting in the media — take her Oprah interview, for example, where she took ownership of her own story.

” Moving past these reviews will require her to lean into her authentic self even more, perhaps by showing up more prominently in the content and being more transparent about her involvement. She’s recently returned to Instagram but could be doing more with it, such as taking her audience behind the scenes of her work. “

The second season of With Love, Meghan is coming in the autumn, and has already finished filming, according to Netflix. Meghan posted on her Instagram stories on Friday with a video of her wearing a hat with the writing” lettuce romaine calm “on and grinning, then turning and putting her hands in the air.

The caption on the Instagram story said:” Lettuce romaine calm… or not (!) because I’m thrilled to share that Season 2 of ‘ With Love, Meghan ‘ is coming! “The story was shortly followed by a post on her Instagram with a reel with clips of her cooking and the caption:” Oh, how I love ASMR! If you’re loving Season 1, just wait until you see the fun we cooked up on Season 2! “Thanks for joining the party, and an endless thanks to the amazing team and crew who helped bring it all to life! @netflix”.

The Hundred draft – who should each team target?

The Hundred draft takes place on Wednesday before the fifth edition of the tournament this summer.

With a host of big-name players up for grabs, the 16 teams – eight men’s and eight women’s – will be looking for the additions to give themselves the best chance of lifting the trophy at Lord’s on 31 August.

Men’s draft

Birmingham Phoenix

Current squad: Liam Livingstone, Ben Duckett, Trent Boult (overseas), Jacob Bethell, Benny Howell, Adam Milne (o), Dan Mousley, Tim Southee (o), Will Smeed, Chris Wood, Aneurin Donald.

What do they need? The best player available. With established openers (Duckett and Smeed), a flurry of all-rounders (Livingstone, Bethell, Mousley, Howell) and their Kiwi pace trio (Boult, Milne, Southee), Phoenix can be flexible with their selection and pick who they think is the best player available at the time.

London Spirit

Current squad: Jamie Smith, Liam Dawson, Daniel Worrall, Kane Williamson (o), Richard Gleeson, Olly Stone, Ollie Pope, Keaton Jennings.

What do they need? An explosive all-rounder.

Given a slow-ish scoring top four of Jennings, Smith, Williamson and Pope and tricky six-hitting conditions at Lord’s at the end of innings, Jamie Overton could fit the bill.

Manchester Originals

Afghanistan's Noor AhmadGetty Images

Current squad: Jos Buttler, Phil Salt, Heinrich Klaasen (o), Matthew Hurst, Scott Currie, Josh Tongue, Tom Hartley, Sonny Baker, Tom Aspinwall.

What do they need? A wicket-taking spinner. The Originals only picked up 31 wickets across eight games last season, the joint lowest for any side.

Left-arm wrist-spinner Noor Ahmad took 13 wickets at 17.5 in the recent SA20 with an economy of 6.90.

Northern Superchargers

Current squad: Harry Brook, Adil Rashid, David Miller (o), Mitchell Santner (o), Brydon Carse, Matthew Potts, Ben Dwarshuis (o), Graham Clark, Pat Brown, Tom Lawes.

What do they need? A top order run-scorer. Nicholas Pooran (fourth with 227 runs) was the only Supercharger in the top 10 run-scorers last season. Their top three batters collectively average 18.9 (only Spirit were worse in 2024).

Oval Invincibles

Lhuan-dre Pretorius bats for Paarl Royals in SA20SA20

Current squad: Sam Curran, Will Jacks, Tom Curran, Jordan Cox, Rashid Khan (o), Saqib Mahmood, Sam Billings, Gus Atkinson, Nathan Sowter, Donovan Ferreira (o), Tawanda Muyeye.

What do they need? A left-handed opener. Having retained most of their back-to-back title winning squad, with the exception of Dawid Malan, they’ll be looking for a good value overseas option in the middle rounds of the draft.

Southern Brave

Current squad: James Vince, Jofra Archer, Tymal Mills, Chris Jordan, Faf du Plessis (o), Leus Du Plooy, Craig Overton, Laurie Evans, Finn Allen (o), Danny Briggs, James Coles.

What do they need? Lower-order power. Established top-order batters Du Plessis and Vince should do the bulk of the run scoring but the squad is missing a big hitter to clear the ropes at number six.

Kieron Pollard, who memorably hit Rashid Khan for five sixes to win Southern Brave a match last year, could return. He boasts a six every nine deliveries he faces in Hundred cricket.

Trent Rockets

Sunil NarineGetty Images

Current squad: Joe Root, Marcus Stoinis (o), Tom Banton, John Turner, Sam Cook, Sam Hain, Tom Alsop, Calvin Harrison.

What do they need? Mystery spin. Rashid Khan has left for Oval Invincibles and Andy Flower’s side have always had an overseas spinner in their ranks (Rashid, Chris Green, Ish Sodhi, Tabraiz Shamsi, Imad Wasim).

Sunil Narine could be the next. His availability because of the CPL is a concern but that hasn’t stopped them picking Rashid in the past.

Welsh Fire

Current squad: Chris Woakes, Steve Smith (o), Jonny Bairstow, Tom Kohler-Cadmore, Tom Abell, Luke Wells, Stephen Eskinazi.

What do they need? Bowlers! Fire released all of them, with only Woakes coming in. Franchise-leading wicket-taker David Payne was a particularly surprising release.

New Zealand quick Matt Henry is an exceptional new-ball bowler in helpful conditions and in high demand after his Champions Trophy exploits.

Women’s draft

Birmingham Phoenix

Current squad: Ellyse Perry (o), Amy Jones, Emily Arlott, Megan Schutt (o), Hannah Baker, Charis Pavely, Sterre Kalis, Ailsa Lister.

What do they need? A top-order batter. The departure of Sophie Devine leaves a big gap – but Phoenix will pick first in the women’s draft.

Georgia Voll is a WPL star and now an Australia international. The 21-year-old’s stock has only risen throughout the winter thanks to both franchise and international exploits.

London Spirit

London Spirit captain Heather Knight with The Hundred trophy in 2024Getty Images

Current squad: Grace Harris (o), Danielle Gibson, Sarah Glenn, Charlie Dean, Deepti Sharma (o), Georgia Redmayne (o), Eva Gray, Cordelia Griffith, Tara Norris, Sophie Munro.

What do they need? Their title-winning captain. After lifting the title last year, Spirit followed both Oval Invincibles and Welsh Fire in retaining 10 players, with their 11th an established player returning in the top bracket.

Manchester Originals

Current squad: Amelia Kerr (o), Sophie Ecclestone, Beth Mooney (o), Lauren Filer, Mahika Gaur, Eve Jones, Kathryn Bryce, Fi Morris, Danielle Gregory.

What do they need? A dynamic middle-order batter. With Beth Mooney and Amelia Kerr expected to score the bulk of the runs, the Originals will be looking for a quick scoring batter to finish off innings.

Northern Superchargers

Mady Villiers bowls for Oval Invincibles in The HundredGetty Images

Current squad: Phoebe Litchfield (o), Annabel Sutherland (o), Georgia Wareham (o), Kate Cross, Bess Heath, Linsey Smith, Hollie Armitage, Alice Davidson-Richards, Grace Ballinger, Davina Perrin.

What do they need? The best player available. With the Superchargers not picking until round nine, they’ll have jump on whoever drops down.

Mady Villiers has been a mainstay at Oval Invincibles and, while capable of bowling in both the powerplay and at the death, her ability to keep it tight through the middle has helped her side squeeze opposition.

Oval Invincibles

Current squad: Marizanne Kapp (o), Alice Capsey, Lauren Winfield-Hill, Amanda-Jade Wellington (o), Meg Lanning (o), Tash Farrant, Ryana Macdonald-Gay, Sophia Smale, Jo Gardner, Rachel Slater.

What do they need? Continuity. Jonathan Batty has kept a core of players throughout his time as Invincibles head coach and has been joined by his WPL skipper Meg Lanning in the off-season.

Paige Scholfield has capped herself at £50, 000 for the draft and looks all but certain to return to the Invincibles.

Southern Brave

Chinelle Henry bats for UP Warriorz in WPL 2025BCCI/WPL

Current squad: Laura Wolvaardt (o), Danni Wyatt-Hodge, Maia Bouchier, Lauren Bell, Freya Kemp, Georgia Adams, Tilly Corteen-Coleman, Rhianna Southby.

What do they need? All-round talent.

Lauren Bell led the Brave in wickets last year with nine, but that was only joint 13th best in the competition. With the bat, Brave’s scoring rate in the final 25 balls of the match was the second lowest in the competition, a clear sign of a lack of power.

West Indies ‘ Chinelle Henry has lit up the 2025 WPL, averaging 27 while striking at 196 with the bat, hitting more sixes (15) than fours (12).

Trent Rockets

Current squad: Ash Gardner (o), Nat Sciver-Brunt, Alana King (o), Heather Graham (o), Bryony Smith, Grace Scrivens, Kirstie Gordon, Alexa Stonehouse, Natasha Wraith, Cassidy McCarthy.

What do they need? X-factor pace. While pace isn’t everything, the Rockets were the only side last year to not register a ball over 70mph in the entire competition.

While spinners Gardner and King are exceptional, they could be backed up by spells of fiery pace.

Welsh Fire

Sophia Dunkley bats for Welsh Fire in The HundredGetty Images

Current squad: Hayley Matthews (o), Tammy Beaumont, Jess Jonassen (o), Shabnim Ismail (o), Sarah Bryce, Georgia Elwiss, Freya Davies, Georgia Davis, Emily Windsor, Beth Langston.

What do they need? Continuity. Welsh Fire have retained the core of last year’s runners-up side and will look to do the same with their only pick in the top eight rounds, with Sophia Dunkley expected to return.

Dunkley started the 2024 Hundred brightly before her form tailed off.

Molly-Mae Hague’s go-to skincare brand launches new serum that plumps and firms skin

TikTok-viral beauty brand Laneige – best known for its Lip Sleeping Masks, pots of thick, rich lip balm in a range of delicious flavours – also makes some equally impressive skincare products – and the latest to launch is a super-hydrating, ‘ youth-preserving ‘ serum that promises a plumper, juicier, more radiant complexion.

Laneige has just added to its Bouncy &amp, Firm skincare line with the new Bouncy &amp, Firm Serum, which launched today (11 March 2025) exclusively at Space NK. This lightweight formula claims to result in skin that is, according to Laneige, ‘ visibly plumper, firmer and smoother’, while also tackling ‘ early line formation’.

Laneige’s latest skincare drop (Laneige)

The key ingredients in this must-have new serum – which costs £39 for a 30ml bottle – include a plumping and hydrating peony and collagen complex, firming peptide water, and 24, 000 of what Laneige calls SmoothTech™ Capsules, which smooth the skin. The result is a lightweight, non-sticky and quickly-absorbed formula that instantly makes skin look better.

We think it’s a great one for guys too, whose skin often suits a clear, hydrating, gel-type serum.

Space NK says that this new serum pairs perfectly with Laneige’s Bouncy &amp, Firm Lip Treatment, which costs £23 on its own, or you can buy both of them together for £62 (these lip balms last for ages, too).

Alternatively add Laneige’s most iconic product to your basket: the Lip Sleeping Mask, £21. Now available in a number of different shades and flavours, this lip balm went even more viral after mega-influencer Molly-Mae Hague revealed that she packed it in her hospital bag before giving birth to daughter Bambi.

Another Laneige product Molly loves is the Water Bank Blue Hyaluronic Cream Moisturiser, £19.50. On a video on Lookfantastic’s TikTok channel, the 25-year-old says, “I’ve put so many of my friends and family onto this. For dryness, this is incredible, and it’s not too unreasonably priced.

” The consistency and the formula is so lightweight yet so hydrating, and under make-up this sits beautifully too. “

If you’re looking for an alternative to the new Laneige Bouncy &amp, Firm Serum, we also really love Vichy Mineral 89 Hyaluronic Acid Hydrating Serum, at 75ml, you get more product for your money, and it’s currently part of a ‘ buy one Vichy product, get one half price ‘ offer at Boots.

You’ll also find the cult classic No7 Protect &amp, Perfect Intense ADVANCED Serum reduced down from £27.95 to £10 today as part of Boots ‘ £10 Tuesday deals – but you’ll need to be quick if you want to nab it at this price.
