Why Swiatek’s reign as ‘Queen of Clay’ is under threat

French Open 2025

Dates: 25 May-8 June Venue: Roland Garros

Iga Swiatek’s recent dominance at the French Open – and the tournaments leading up to it – has led to a regal nickname: the Queen of Clay.

The 23-year-old Pole has won four of the past five Roland Garros women’s singles titles and arrives in Paris as the three-time defending champion.

But this year there are considerable doubts about if she can continue her reign.

For the first time since 2020 – when she claimed her maiden title as an unheralded teenager – Swiatek arrives without winning a WTA tournament in the first five months of the season.

As a result, the former long-time world number one has dropped to fifth in the rankings.

‘My life turned upside down’ – the mental toll

Most players on the WTA Tour would be envious of Swiatek’s record this season.

She has won 27 of her 36 matches so far, reaching four semi-finals and contesting another three quarter-finals in eight tournaments.

But Swiatek has rarely reached her dominant best over the past few months.

She has often looked tense, tightly wound with emotion, and it has poured out after tough defeats.

Swiatek was inconsolable after losing in the Olympics semi-finals at Roland Garros last summer, saying she cried for “six hours” afterwards.

Two weeks later came a bombshell – Swiatek had failed a doping test.

It was announced in November she had tested positive for heart medication trimetazidine (TMZ) in an out-of-competition sample and was subsequently given a one-month ban after the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) accepted the result was caused by contamination.

“My life went upside down in November. It wasn’t easy and wasn’t easy to accept afterwards.

“It took me a long time to do that, but now I feel like I have space just to work and hopefully I’m going to use that.

“I’m looking for a peaceful time and just waiting for it to happen.”

Swiatek was alluding to a series of issues that have cropped up this year.

In March, Swiatek was criticised for reacting angrily towards a ball boy at Indian Wells, then given extra security after being verbally abused by an “aggressive and taunting” fan in Miami.

She made a short trip back to Warsaw last month for the funeral of her grandfather before her Madrid Open title defence began.

During a heavy semi-final defeat by Coco Gauff, Swiatek broke down at a changeover and sobbed beneath her towel.

And in Rome, she was visibly upset during a brief chat with the media after a chastening third-round loss to Danielle Collins.

“For sure it hasn’t been easy. For sure I’m doing something wrong,” she said afterwards.

‘I’m focusing on mistakes’ – the technical uncertainty

With these issues lingering in the background, Swiatek has been nowhere near her best level throughout the clay-court swing.

Her destructive forehand – arguably her most effective tool – has lost its reliability, while her service game has been picked apart by big-hitting opponents.

The mistakes, according to Swiatek, are because of slight technical tweaks she is making.

But there is also an element of uncertainty in her usually sharp footwork, hinting at her crisis of confidence.

The manner of the early exit in Rome – a 6-1 7-5 loss to Collins – was particularly concerning, with Swiatek converting just two of 10 break opportunities.

“I’m making decisions that are not really good at the moment because I just remember how it felt in previous tournaments or previous years,” Swiatek said.

“I kind of assume it’s going to go in and then I make mistakes.

Swiatek appointed Wim Fissette – a leading coach who has helped several players win Grand Slams – after parting ways with Tomasz Wiktorowski last year.

In a recent interview with a Polish journalist, Swiatek said it was “very harsh and unfair” to blame Fissette for her recent results.

“During a tournament, under the influence of various factors, including stress, I sometimes make a mistake and go back to my old technique,” she told the Sportowefakty website.

“But it’s not the coach’s fault – that’s how training and sport work.

Can she bounce back at the French Open?

For Swiatek, the clay-court events leading up to the French Open usually build her rhythm and confidence, ensuring she can peak at the business end of the tournament.

Clearly that has not happened this year, but Roland Garros is the one place where you would back Swiatek to rediscover her mojo.

The statistics underline her recent dominance:

“Sometimes you can start the Grand Slam in really bad shape and not playing perfectly, but then find your game during,” Swiatek told BBC Sport.

Swiatek’s speed and agility of movement give her time to unleash her Rafael Nadal-esque top-spin forehand – a key component in her success.

American world number two Gauff, one of the main contenders for the trophy, insists it would be foolish to rule Swiatek out.

“I always think if someone wins a tournament that many times, regardless of what shape they’re in, they can definitely figure out a way to win again,” Gauff said.

But immediately after her Rome defeat, Swiatek seemed unsure.

She curtly dismissed suggestions that returning to Roland Garros could rekindle positive feelings.

King Charles’ surprising birthday gift to David Beckham after Harry and Brooklyn’s chat’

King Charles and Queen Camilla have revealed they sent David Beckham a rather lavish gift for his recent 50th birthday after their two sons found ‘common ground’

David Beckham thanked King Charles and Queen Camilla for their rather surprising birthday present. The former Manchester United legend celebrated his 50th birthday earlier this month amidst an ongoing family feud. While David’s famous family pulled together for the occasion, his eldest son, Brooklyn, failed to attend any of the three celebrations.

It was recently claimed that Brooklyn, 26, and his wife, Nicola Peltz, 30, met with Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, at their home in Montecito, California, with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex offering their support to the Peltz-Beckhams following the family fall-out. But while the Beckham’s and the royals have had a long-standing friendship, it appears that the King and Queen are showing their support to David.

The 50-year-old attended the Chelsea Flower Show on Monday alongside the likes of Alan Titchmarsh. While attending the regal event, Beckham was seen sporting a rose as a buttonhole, and it has since emerged that the flower has a very royal connection.

The King, 76, was heard asking David if he had received the recent gift for his birthday after they met on an official line-up. “You got it, didn’t you?” the Monarch asked. David responded: “It was incredible, thank you. It was very kind.”

Just moments later, Queen Camilla met Beckham and commented: “Nice to see you again, glad you got the roses.” The footballer told Her Majesty that he had a “perfect” but “busy weekend,” adding it was “a lot of fun.” Beckham’s rose, a King’s Rose was named in honour of the King who has never shied away from discussing his love for horticulture.

The meeting comes after the King’s second son, Prince Harry, offered David and Victoria Beckham’s eldest son his “unwavering support” following the Beckham feud. It’s reported Nicola and former Suits actress Meghan found “common ground” over allegations of their apparently similar story of allegedly helping to split famous families.

A source told Mail Online: “Brooklyn knows how hurt David and Victoria were when Harry and Meghan accused them of briefing stories about them. David, who is very mild-mannered, was absolutely furious.”

They added: “Brooklyn was very much around and spending a lot of time with his parents when this all happened. It was over five years ago but the upset and dislike is still very much there.

“Victoria was especially good to Meghan in the beginning, and it all got thrown back in her face.” David and Victoria are believed to have fallen out with Meghan and Harry in the past, despite once appearing close with the footballer and former Spice Girl even attending their wedding seven years ago.

The Sun, however, claims that Peltz-Beckham and Sussex’s dinner had been arranged prior to Brooklyn’s fall-out with his family. A source told the outlet that it was an “unexpected invite” for Brooklyn and Nicola, who were described as feeling “pretty battle-wounded,” but was “gratefully received”. The source said that Prince Harry and Meghan were “very kind” and “empathetic” to their guests.

The source added: “Harry was fully aware of the situation and offered Brooklyn his unwavering support as someone who has been through similar.” They added: “Nicola and Meghan also had a bit of a ‘deep [and] meaningful’ [chat] as obviously both women have been positioned in the media as home-wreckers – the women to tear apart their husbands’ families.”

‘Oversight’ on goalkeepers catches Scotland short

The lack of emerging goalkeepers is “probably an oversight,” according to head coach Steve Clarke.

Craig Gordon, 42, is still missing, so Angus Gunn will travel to Iceland and Liechtenstein in June.

Prior to being selected at Euro 2024, Gunn was a free agent after leaving Norwich City, earning him 15 caps and reclaiming his spot.

Robby McCrorie and Cieran Slicker provide backup, with the latter having played ten minutes of Ipswich Town’s entire season.

McCrorie started 20 Premiership games for Kilmarnock, while the majority of the top-flight Scots players are international.

“We haven’t quite had the same quality coming through since we had Craig, David Marshall, and Allan McGregor,” said one reviewer.

We ought to have taken note of it a few years ago. It’s most likely an oversight. You would think “that will never end” when three of our goalkeepers played at once of what level.

Marshall played 47 times, and McGregor resisted after 42 appearances, while Gordon, who made his international debut in 2004, has 81 caps.

You don’t know how the younger ones will develop, Clarke said.

You can say “we haven’t got anything,” but suddenly some 18, 19, and 20-year-olds might get some playing time and have a chance to play more frequently.

You’re looking at more and putting them in against their peers, I told the 17s, 19s, and 21s coaches in March. Then you’re searching for the one who can rise to the top of that age group.

Hearts’ Liam McFarlane and Ruairidh Adams of Dundee United have been busy this season, both on loan at East Fife and Kelty Hearts, with the exception of Ruairidh Adams, who both have recent Scotland Under-21 experience.

Before being replaced by 35-year-old David Mitchell, Lewis Budinauckas lost in his place to Greenock Morton’s Lewis Budinauckas, who had eight games with Partick Thistle and four for Rangers.

In the second half of the term, Murray Johnson of Hibernian was only allowed to play one minute with Queen of the South after playing 13 games for Airdrieonians.

“The children must play,” Clarke continued. “Many teams are essentially kept in squads to sit on the bench.” They only learn good habits through training while working with good people.

Maybe we can find a way to send these young goalkeepers to League 1, League 2, and the Championship at a younger age where they can play and perform well.

“You’re going to put a more experienced goalkeeper back in, obviously, if you’re a manager and you take a young goalkeeper and he throws a couple into the net.”

Trump signs bill outlawing ‘revenge porn’

A bill prohibiting so-called “revenge porn,” including images created with artificial intelligence, has been signed by US President Donald Trump.

The Take It Down Act, which was signed on Monday, makes it illegal to publish intimate photos of someone without their permission, and requires social media sites to take down those photos as soon as possible.

The legislation applies to both authentic photos and realistic-looking AI-created images, known as “deepfakes,” which were approved by the US Congress earlier this year with near-unanimous support.

“Numerous women have been harassed with deepfakes and other explicit images distributed against their will as a result of the rise of AI image generation.” At a signing ceremony held at the White House in Washington, DC, Trump declared, “This is wrong… just so horribly wrong.”

“We’re making it completely illegal today because it’s a very abusive situation.”

After her husband’s return to the White House, First Lady Melania Trump praised the legislation as a “powerful step forward in our efforts to ensure that every American, especially young people, can feel better protected from their image or identity being abused.”

The legislation attracted criticism from digital rights organizations on privacy and anti-censorship grounds despite enjoying rare bipartisan support and the backing of numerous organizations fighting sexual harassment and assault.

The Electronic Frontier Foundation claimed that the law’s provisions for removing flagged content from the internet “risikoed free expression, user privacy, and due process, without addressing the problem it claims to solve”.

In a statement released in February, the group claimed that “lawful content, including satire, journalism, and political speech, could be unfairly censored.”

The US has $36 trillion in debt. What does that mean, and who owns it?

A significant congressional committee in the US approved President Donald Trump’s new tax cut bill on Sunday, which is expected to pass the House of Representatives later this week.

The bill extends Trump’s tax cuts from 2017 and could raise the country’s debt by $5 trillion, raising questions following Moody’s’ recent downgrad of US credit ratings on Friday, which raised concerns about the country’s growing $36 trillion debt.

The US is grappling with growing concerns about its long-term fiscal stability, which is the highest level of the world.

How much debt is US?

Debt is simply the total amount of money that the US government currently owes its creditors, totaling $ 36. 2 trillion. This accounts for 122 percent of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) annually, and it is expanding by about $1 trillion every three months.

During the pandemic in 2020, the ratio reached 133 percent, which was the highest debt-to-GDP ratio. The US has the highest debt-to-GDP ratio among the top ten nations in the world.

Why does the debt ceiling keep rising, and what is it?

The government runs a deficit when it spends more money than it collects.

The government takes more money out to pay this deficit. The US Congress establishes a maximum amount of money that the government can borrow to pay off existing obligations like Social Security, healthcare, and defense in order to ensure that borrowing is approved by the legislature. The debt ceiling refers to this cap.

If the cap is not raised or suspended by Congress, the government is unable to borrow more once it has been exceeded. Congress has 78 times raised, suspended, or changed the debt ceiling to allow for more borrowing from the US.

Under various presidents, the federal deficit increased.

The government spends more money than it spends in a single year, or in terms of the federal deficit. A surplus in the federal government would indicate that the US is spending more money than it is bringing in.

During Trump’s first term, the deficit increased sharply, particularly in 2020 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, during which the government spent a lot while job losses caused tax revenues to decline. The deficit accounted for nearly 15% of the GDP in that year.

There was a federal surplus under former president Bill Clinton as a result of favorable economic conditions, such as the dot-com boom, as well as tax increases that generated higher income.

Treasury bills, notes, and bonds: what are they?

The Treasury, the federal government’s finance division, is the place where the US goes when it needs to borrow money.

The Treasury sells a variety of debt instruments to investors, including Treasury bills, Treasury notes, and Treasury bonds, for borrowing money.

The US government receives these loans in the form of loans, which are essentially promises to repay them with interest.

Because of the low risk of the US failing to pay its investors, US Treasuries have long been regarded as a safe asset.

Different debt securities have different maturities, and the investor receives a refund for the debt.

Treasury bills (T-bills) are short-term and expire in a year.

  • Treasury notes (T-notes) are medium-term and mature for between two and ten years.
  • Treasury bonds (T-bonds) have a 20 to 30 year maturity.

Who is a US debtor?

About $27.2 trillion of the US debt, or 35%, is held domestically, out of which:

US private investors and organizations own $ 15.16 trillion (42%), the majority of which are in the form of savings bonds, mutual funds, and pension funds.

  • US intra-governmental organizations and trusts hold $ 7.36 trillion (20%) of that amount.
  • The Federal Reserve holds $4.63 trillion (13%) in its hands.

The largest non-government holder of US Treasury bills, worth $314 billion, is Warren Buffett, who owns the majority of the money among individuals.

The remaining quarter’s worth, which is $2.05 trillion (25%), is held by foreign investors.

Over the past 50 years, foreign companies have increased their stake in US debt by fivefold. Only 5% of foreign investors owned the company in 1970, up from 25% today.

INTERACTIVE-Who holds US debt OVERALL_EDIT-MAY5-2025 copy-1747665373

Which nations are the most indebted abroad?

Countries purchase US debt because it facilitates exchange rate control, provides stability, and guarantees interest income. It also provides a safe, stable investment for their foreign currency reserves.

Foreign investors currently have debt totaling $9.05 trillion:

  • $ 1.13 trillion is held by Japan.
  • The United Kingdom holds $779.3 billion, making it the second-largest non-US treasury holder since March.
  • China holds $765.4bn
  • Because it is a tax haven, the Cayman Islands ($455.3 billion) are a significant source of US debt.
  • Canada ($426.2bn)

In trade negotiations with the Trump administration, both Japan and China have indicated that they will use their substantial holdings of US Treasury securities as leverage.

Japanese Finance Minister Katsunobu Kato earlier this month stated that trade negotiations could turn to Japan’s massive holding of US treasuries.

China has also been slowly selling US Treasury bills for years. China’s US Treasury holdings dropped to their lowest level since 2009 as a result of efforts to diversify reserves and persistent trade tensions.

What does the typical American’s high US debt mean?

Budgets and public spending can be impacted by the US government’s increasing spending on debt interest repayments as it becomes more expensive to support itself.
