How Schmid screengrab reignited putter debate

Images courtesy of Getty

His best PGA Tour appearance so far, Matti Schmid, from Germany, addressed his ball in a crucial tap-in on Sunday in second place at the Charles Schwab Challenge.

The television cameras captured the club’s upper reaches in one word. The thumb was resting on top of the grip on a clenched left hand. His thumb’s knuckle creased around his blue-patterned shirt.

Was his chest also in contact with his knuckle, as the image suggested? Was it firmly pressed against his sternum if so? A fixed anchor point had he been discovered? He broke the law, right? Or was everything okay?

What is stated in the regulation?

A player must not “do it ‘directly’, by holding the club or by holding my hand against any part of the body,” according to Rule 10.1 of the Golf Rules.

Schmid acknowledged that the image was a “bad look” when I showed a screengrab of it to a leading referee who was unaware of the daylight between his left thumb and his shirt.

There is no violation of this rule if the player’s club, gripping hand, or forearm is only merely touching their body or clothing during the stroke, without being held against the body, he added.

What makes this controversial?

Despite legislation being put into effect almost ten years ago, the question of “anchored” continues to be one of the murkiest in the industry.

It actually seems to be getting more and more relevant.

With a second-place finish behind Ben Griffin, Schmid led the putting charts at Colonial. The two-time former European Amateur champion moved up to 55th in the FedEx Cup standings after gaining more than eight strokes with his prowess on the greens with his prowess.

All of this is not to say that the 27-year-old’s actions violated any laws. His stroke may have a sufficient amount of lateral movement to suggest that he is not stabilizing to a fixed point.

However, the topic of interest in professional locker rooms continues to be.

The referee I spoke to continued, “He’s probably OK.” He’s probably just touching the shirt material, but what he’s trying to achieve is to be as close to his chest as possible, which in turn results in player integrity.

Under the condition of anonymity, another official who refers to the DP World Tour said, “It is incredibly difficult to enforce.”

We spoke with a few players who we thought were breaking the rule, and they are all pleased to report that they have since resumed their shorter putters.

What previous instances have there been?

Following a string of major victories won by golfers using extended putter shafts, the rule was made effective in 2016.

Ernie Els and Keegan Bradley both won the 2011 US Open with their midriffs, and Keegan Bradley did the same for his subsequent Open success. Adam Scott won a year later at the Masters and Webb Simpson won a broom-handle major at the 2012 US Open. The Aussie uses the long putter even though there is still daylight between his body and his stroke.

Nine years ago, anchoring was prohibited due to the “fundamental characteristics of the putting stroke.”

Because it moves the hit, an extended shaft can be clamped against a forearm (as does US Open champion Bryson DeChambeau does).

However, some players believe even this method makes putting “too easy” to do.

Additionally, there are many more opponents who opt for longer implements and avoid convention. The likes of Akshay Bhatia, Si Woo Kim, and Lucas Glover make the most of these potentially contentious clubs, along with Schmid.

Bernhard Langer and Scott McCarron have long endured having their techniques questioned on the Seniors tour, and Eugenio Chacarra’s victory in the Indian Open on the DP World Tour in March attracted attention.

The rules have been vehemently refrained by Langer and McCarron.

According to Langer, “I personally don’t understand it because I’m a man of integrity, and breaking rules and being known as cheating is the last thing I want to do.”

Because I have control over my hand, I can tell when I’m anchoring and when I’m not. You can see it going sideways.

I’m not anchoring or touching any part of my body when my knuckle is away from the body, and I know I’m in compliance with the rules.

The issue is that it frequently is impossible to enforce and is not even apparent to the eye.

It means that a problem as fundamental as the putting stroke is obscured by more grey areas than a flotilla of battleships, which is highly unsatisfying and unfair on Schmid given how brilliantly dominant they are on the greens are they.

Eddie Pepperell, winner of the DP World Tour, says it’s “quite simple” to find a solution.

He remarked on the podcast Chipping Forecast that “insist on the putter being the shortest club in the bag.”

Some referees concur.

One official said, “The simple solution is to limit the putter’s maximum length and then finish with it.”

2025 AMA: Tyla Wins Favourite Afrobeats Artist, Rekindles Genre Debate

At the 51st Annual Meeting of the American Music Awards (AMAs), held on Monday night at the Fontainebleau Las Vegas, South African singer Tyla won the category for Favorite Afrobeats Performer.

Tyla won the award after defeating Asake, Tems, Wizkid, and Rema, making her the first South African and first woman to do so since its introduction in 2022. &nbsp,

Wizkid, the inaugural winner, was one of the nominees this year.

Read more about Cannes’ Highlights as the film festival comes to an end.

Asake, Rema, Tems, and Wizkid are in a photo combination.

Her success was largely attributed to her success, including her popular single Water, which became well-known worldwide.

During her acceptance speech, Tyla said, “This means the world to me.” It’s a dream come true to be recognized on this stage alongside legends I respect. Thank you to everyone who backed me.

However, the victory has rekindled debates about genre classification in global music awards.

Tyla has previously outperformed Nigerian Afrobeats stars in a genre-related category. &nbsp,

She won the Best Afrobeats Music Video at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs), outperforming other African artists like Burna Boy, Tems, and Ayra Starr.

Tyla addressed the confusion surrounding her musical identity after that victory by thanking her and stating that she does not consider herself an Afrobeats artist.

Because I am aware that there are some African artists who are grouping under the name of Afrobeats, she said, “This is so special but also bittersweet.” &nbsp,

African music is so diverse that it transcends just Afrobeats, says the group, “but African music has opened many doors for us.” I stand up for Amapiano and my country.

Some people objected to her victory, asking why she wouldn’t accept awards in the afrobeats categories if she didn’t belong in the genre. &nbsp,

They argued that artists who directly influence Afrobeats’ sound and evolution should be given this honor.

During the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards ceremony on January 26, 2020 in Los Angeles, US singer-songwriter Billie Eilish poses in front of the audience with the awards for album of the year, record of the year, best new artist, song of the year, and best pop vocal album.

Billie Eilish won all seven of her nominations, including Artist of the Year, Album of the Year, Favorite Touring Artist, Favorite female pop artist, and Favorite pop album Hit Me Hard and Soft, on the night. Additionally, Birds of a Feather won the awards for Best Pop Song and Song of the Year.

For Cowboy Carter, Beyoncé won two awards, including Best Female Country Artist and Best Country Album.

For Favorite Hip-Hop Singer/Sänger and Favorite Hip-Hop Recordings The Death of Slim Shady (Coup De Grâce), Post-Malone won his first award in the country category and Favourite Male Country Artist. Eminem also won his first AMAs in 15 years. &nbsp,

Jennifer Lopez made a dance medley of 23 of the biggest hits from the previous year to open the evening with a new host of the AMAs for the first time in a decade. &nbsp,

Five of his children presented the Lifetime Achievement Award to Rod Stewart, who then wrapped up the show with his classic Forever Young.

He said in his acceptance speech, “I am absolutely shocked, I didn’t know they were here, my children.”

“I had this burning ambition to sing when I started singing in the early 1960s, well before all of you guys were here.” All I wanted to do was do that. I opted not to be wealthy or well-known, but I’m still here many years later.

Hunger Games prequel launches open casting call – but there’s one catch

This is your chance to join Lionsgate’s open casting call if you’ve ever dreamed to survive The Hunger Games, but one aspect has disappointed some fans.

Hunger Games fans now have the chance to act in Sunset on the Reaping(Image: Dumfries Standard)

Have you ever dreamed of entering the fictional world of Panem? Lionsgate Studios put out an open casting call for Hunger Games fans to become the latest addition to the hotly anticipated Sunrise on the Reaping – and let’s just say, the auditions have been interesting.

It was the studio’s turn on X. One lucky fan will be chosen for a role in Sunrise on the Reaping in accordance with the official casting call. Show us your best performance during an audition, such as acting out a scene, singing a song, or surprising us with something completely novel. All abilities welcome. No prior knowledge is required.

Sunrise on the Reap, Suzanne Collins’ most recent entry in the Hunger Games franchise, is a prequel to Haymitch, which will feature the beloved character mentor Haymitch. It will be released as a major motion picture in 2026. Already starring the star-studded cast are Kieran Culkin and Elle Fanning, who have both received Oscars.

Without prior authorization, content cannot be displayed.

Three crucial factors will be taken into account when judging for the auditions, Lionsgate have stated: 25% acting ability, 25% charisma, and 50% thematic relevance. The prize includes an on-set visit with a guest in addition to the chance to appear on-screen.

Users have been putting their best effort into making TikTok famous all over the site. And judging from the auditions, it seems that fans of the Hunger Games were impressed by three phrases: “surprise us!” and “all talents welcome; no experience required.

hopeful starlet @jwalkerbooks conducted one of the most popular auditions so far. She walked out of a refrigerator door in an explosive (literal) audition with only a bottle of milk in hand. The result is a flashy appearance.

She referred to her performance in “My audition for SOTR (as President Snow’s milk).” She continued, “I can be 2%, 1%, or completely whatever you need.” One commenter attempted to change the iconic phrase “Fire is catching” from the franchise to something more appropriate. No. The liquid is spilt.

Fans have been eager to play other food items as well. Another fan posed next to a bowl of eggs in her kitchen in an audition for the role of “one of the Google eggs Katniss brings Haymitch.”

Fair enough, some auditions featured real talent. After auditioning “for a tribute who uses camouflage to hide in the hunger games,” user @simplystephjaye showed off abilities that Peeta himself would be envious of. Then she began filming herself against a wall covered in wallpaper.

Some strong acting and script-writing skills have been displayed too. TikTokker @oyesebastien caught the world’s attention after auditioning to be a District One tribute (aka one of the antagonists). Strolling in front of the camera, he proceeded to let out a menacing growl, before saying his now-famous line, “What was your name again? Haymitch? More like, hey b—h!”

Of course, many people are unsure about Lionsgate’s ability to hire one of the many hopefuls given the standard of the auditions. Despite this, some TikTok users have been expressing their admiration for the clever marketing, with many of the auditions receiving millions of views.

Unfortunately, not all fans approve of the casting call. Only legal residents of one of the 50 US states may enter, per the competition’s official regulations. which has caused some non-American fans to feel less hopeful about seeing their film on the big screen.

Azarenka’s 48-minute ‘double bagel’ sets records

French Open 2025

Location: Roland Garros, May 25 – June

Victoria Azarenka defeated Belgium’s Yanina Wickmayer in the final round of the French Open, moving into the second round with a 48-minute “double bagel” victory.

The Belarusian won a Grand Slam main-draw match with a score of 6-0 6-0, making him the 35th player in the Open era.

She also becomes the first woman to win a Grand Slam double bagel in three different eras without losing a game.

Wickmayer, who is currently ranked outside the top 1,000 in the world and has declared she will retire this summer, only managed one game point in the contest.

Wickmayer was undone by 26 errors that were unforced, while Azarenka, a two-time major winner, won 15 of the 66 points on offer.

Since 2000, only Maria Sharapova and Kim Clijsters have won more Grand Slam matches than Azarenka’s five with a score of 6-0 6-0.

Since the 2016 Australian Open, she has won one double bagel at a major.

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s wedding plans as fans beg sports star to propose

Fans are clamoring to see one of the hottest couples in the world, Taylor Swift, and American football player Travis Kelce, who is a billionaire.

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce are keeping the world waiting when it comes to their much-hyped engagement. The Bad Blood billionaire, 35, and American football star, also 35, have been dating for almost two years and fans are desperate to see them walk down the aisle.

Recently, the couple has maintained a somewhat low profile, leaving their devoted fans to wonder if everything is awry. They did, however, make a comeback last week after enjoying all that Harry’s Bar and Restaurant had to offer on a date night in Florida.

The restaurant, which is a short drive from Trav’s plush new $20 million (£15m) waterside mansion in Boca Raton, provided the pair with a whole host of culinary treats, including Wagyu-style beef, lobster risotto, cacio e pepe pasta, dover sole and more. The bill, according to the Mail, reportedly totalled more than $400 (£295).

When will Travis attempt to answer the question, though? According to a source, “Everyone is just waiting for Travis to ask her parents for her hand in marriage, and her parents will say yes, and they can’t wait for them to get engaged.”

Nothing seems imminent, but it will absolutely happen. Since this is their last relationship, Taylor and Travis are treating this one like it’s their last, and when they get engaged, married, and start a family, it will happen exactly as they say it.

The new NFL season kicks off in September and is expected to be Travis’ last. After the Chief’s shocking Super Bowl loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in February, it is understood that ‘Killa Trav’ has been laser-focused on maintaining his fitness.

Travis would appear to have Tay-Tay’s parents’ approval if he were to ask the question. They shared a lunch with both of their mothers earlier this year in Philadelphia along with Travis’ brother and sister-in-law, Jason and Kylie, on Mother’s Day in the US.

Taylor’s supporters anticipated that the Americana star would win six awards at the Monday American Music Awards, where she and Travis were nominated for.

However, Taylor was a no-show at the Jennifer Lopez-hosted glitzy bash, where Billie Eilish won all seven awards she received.

At the event, it was reported that Taylor, who didn’t receive any awards on the night, would be announcing major news about her new album.

The star did a Midnights Mayhem With Me series to introduce all the song titles when she was hyping up the release of her album Midnights years ago.

Turn-down phones were featured in both the second and sixth videos of the May’hem series. Fans were persuaded that something would occur on May 26 because of this. Taylor’s 26th theory is further supported by the recent reduction of some items to 26% off her website.

Fans will have to wait a little longer for information regarding the album and her engagement.
