Super Typhoon Fung-wong approaches Philippines, nearly 1 million evacuated

Nearly a million people have evacuated their homes in the Philippines as the country braced for another powerful storm, days after a typhoon killed more than 200 people.

The storm, named Fung-wong, started battering northeastern Philippines on Sunday before its expected landfall, knocking down power and prompting warnings from the weather bureau of a “high risk of life-threatening conditions” in parts of the country.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said Fung-wong, locally known as Uwan, is forecast to make landfall in Aurora province as early as Sunday night with maximum sustained winds of up to 185 kilometres per hour (115 miles per hour) and gusts of up to 230km/h (143mph).

It raised the highest alert level, Signal No 5, for southeastern and central areas, including Catanduanes, Camarines Sur, and Aurora province, while Metro Manila and nearby provinces were under Signal No 3.

Fung-wong, which could cover two-thirds of the Southeast Asian archipelago with its 1,600km (994-mile-) wide rain and wind band, was approaching from the Pacific while the Philippines was still dealing with the devastation wrought by Typhoon Kalmaegi, which left at least 224 people dead in central island provinces on Tuesday before pummeling Vietnam, where at least five were killed.

Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr has declared a state of emergency due to the extensive devastation caused by Kalmaegi and the expected calamity from Fung-wong.

Tropical cyclones with sustained winds of 185km/h (115mph) or higher are categorised in the Philippines as a super typhoon, a designation adopted years ago to underscore the urgency tied to more extreme weather disturbances.

More than 916,860 people were evacuated from high-risk villages in northeastern provinces, including in Bicol, a coastal region vulnerable to Pacific cyclones and mudflows from Mayon, one of the country’s most active volcanoes.

Evacuation calls

Defence Secretary Gilbert Teodoro Jr, who oversees the country’s disaster response agencies and the military, warned about the potentially catastrophic effect of Fung-wong in televised remarks on Saturday.

“We ask that people preemptively evacuate so that we don’t end up having to conduct rescues at the last minute, which could put the lives of police, soldiers, firefighters and coastguard personnel at risk,” he said in a public address.

“We need to do this because when it’s already raining or the typhoon has hit and flooding has started, it’s hard to rescue people,” he added.

Teodoro said the storm could affect a vast expanse of the country, including Cebu, the central province hit hardest by Typhoon Kalmaegi, and metropolitan Manila, the densely populated capital region, which is the seat of power and the country’s financial centre.

More than 30 million people could be exposed to hazards posed by Fung-wong, the Office of Civil Defense said.

In Isabela in northern Luzon, dozens of families were sheltering in a basketball court repurposed as an evacuation centre.

“We heard on the news that the typhoon is very strong, so we evacuated early,” said Christopher Sanchez, 50, who fled with his family.

“We left our things on the roofs of our house since every time there’s a storm, we come here because we live right next to the river,” he told the Reuters news agency. “In previous storms, the floodwaters rose above human height.

“We’re scared,” he said. “We’re here with our grandchildren and our kids. The whole family is in the evacuation area.”

Authorities in northern provinces to be hit or sideswiped by Fung-wong have meanwhile preemptively declared the shutdown of schools and most government offices on Monday and Tuesday. At least 325 domestic and 61 international flights have been cancelled over the weekend and into Monday, and more than 6,600 commuters and cargo workers were stranded in at least 109 seaports, where the coastguard prohibited ships from venturing into rough seas.

Authorities warned of a “high risk of life-threatening and damaging storm surge” of more than 3 metres (10 feet) along the coasts of more than 20 provinces and regions, including metropolitan Manila.

The Philippines is battered by about 20 typhoons and storms each year. The country is also often hit by earthquakes and has more than a dozen active volcanoes, making it one of the world’s most disaster-prone countries.

Ogier cuts Evans’ WRC lead before Saudi finale

Elfyn Evans will take a World Rally Championship (WRC) lead of just three points into the final round of the season after rival Sebastien Ogier won Rally Japan.

Welsh driver Evans, 36, finished 11.6 seconds behind his Toyota team-mate, collecting 25 points from the penultimate event, while eight-time world champion Ogier took the maximum 35.

The 41-year-old Frenchman dominated throughout, including topping the Super Sunday standings on a final day hit by torrential rain.

“I was going to say it’s fun but that’s a bit of a lie about today,” said Evans who is bidding for his maiden world title.

“Overall it’s been a fun weekend to try and fight with Seb.”

A third Toyota driver, Kalle Rovanpera, now only has an outside chance of winning his third WRC title – trailing by 24 points after placing sixth in Japan.

Evans held a 13-point lead over both Ogier and Rovanpera going into the Toyota City-based event.

However, the Finn’s hopes took an early blow, dropping more than five minutes on Friday after damaging his rear suspension in a collision with a barrier.

Evans began slowly, placing sixth on the opening stage, but put together back-to-back stage wins on Friday and a strong Saturday morning sequence to rise up to second just 1.4secs behind leader Ogier.

The Frenchman responded with a dominant performance on Saturday afternoon, which continued as he was also the quickest driver across the final day’s six stages – including adding a further additional five points with victory in the final bonus power stage.

“It’s obviously a perfect result,” said Ogier, who is looking to equal Sebastien Loeb’s record nine world titles.

“It’s been a challenging weekend because after the rain today nothing was certain, it was the start of a new rally this morning.

“Now, let’s go to the next one. This was a perfect weekend for us to come back so close [to Evans] and let’s hope the last one is not a lottery.”

Toyota Gazoo Racing have already secured their fifth consecutive WRC manufacturers’ title and are now guaranteed to take the top three places in the drivers’ championship.

Rovanpera, though, looks destined to finish third in his final rally season before switching to a career in circuit racing.

“Definitely not the weekend we wanted to have but sometimes it’s like this,” said the 25-year-old Finn.

I’m A Celeb star Kelly Brook’s ‘struggle’ amid marriage to famous husband

As she’s set to make her I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here! debut, pals say Kelly Brook is concerned about how she’ll cope being apart from her husband Jeremy Parisi

She will face hundreds of creepy crawlies, have to sleep in a jungle and eat not much more than rice and beans for up to three weeks, as Kelly Brook is tipped to star in the latest series of I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!, which kicks off next weekend.

For the next few weeks, the presenter will be living alongside the likes of soap star Lisa Riley, model and podcaster Vogue Williams, rapper Aitch and the late Ozzy Osbourne’s son Jack. But as she settles into camp life, a source claims Kelly is concerned about how she will manage without her partner of 10 years, Jeremy Parisi.

Last month, she shared an insight into her relationship with the French actor and model. Kelly, 45, confessed to being “co-dependent” on her 40-year-old husband, who she married in 2022, as they must eat dinner together every night and have the same work schedules.

“I’m very co-dependent and I think Jeremy and I just wanna be together all the time,” she told her fellow panellists on Loose Women. “Well, I definitely want to be with him all the time, not sure he’d say the same. We like to go off and work separately, but I think in the evenings, we really pride ourselves on having dinner together, that’s really sacred to us. My marriage is really sacred.”

Kelly revealed how the pair ensure their schedules match to give them as much time together as possible, and would even turn work down if it meant they couldn’t see each other.

Her surprised Loose Women co-star Mariella Frostrup quipped, “I’m feeling quite suffocated just listening to you,” but Kelly insisted her marriage is “number one”.

The source tells us, “Kelly is extremely close to Jeremy. He does everything for her. He really is the most easygoing guy. She’s going to have real FOMO without him by her side.

“She’s going to really struggle to be honest, because they’re never apart it will be painful emotionally at times. It’s going to be interesting to see how she manages. She wants to push herself but she’s not used to being without him.”

Previously, Kelly was engaged four times before finally finding The One in Jeremy. One of her most high-profile romances was with actor Jason Statham, when they met in 1998.

He even popped the question but they parted ways after six years together. “I’m not the same as I was when we met,” said Kelly of their romance, which began in her late teens. “I’m a lot more complex now – a lot more high maintenance.”

Kelly went on to date Titanic star Billy Zane, getting engaged once more during the course of their four-year relationship that finished when she reportedly didn’t want to move to Los Angeles permanently.

She also dated rugby player Danny Cipriani for two years, but Danny admitted to cheating. “She went through my phone and saw lots of messages she probably didn’t enjoy reading,” the sports star revealed in his autobiography. “She just caught me red-handed.”

She moved on with Danny’s teammate Thom Evans, but Kelly suffered a miscarriage in May 2011. Shortly afterwards, they got engaged, making it Kelly’s third. Later that year, Kelly got pregnant again but miscarried for a second time in December, and their relationship ended the following year.

Kelly then had a whirlwind romance with former Gladiators star David McIntosh, who she got engaged to in 2014. However the pair broke up in 2015. The source adds, “We know she’s had a bit of a past, so she’s naturally more vulnerable.

“Jeremy doesn’t put a foot wrong, and he absolutely adores her, but it’s only natural she’d be scarred from the past. She’s worried about being in the jungle because she relies a lot on him. He’s her safety blanket so it’ll be interesting how she gets on.”

While heading to Oz will be a big ask for Kelly, she is also following in the footsteps of her rival Katie Price. She became swept up in a spat with Katie in 2013, which began when Katie cruelly called Kelly a “heifer” in her newspaper column.

Katie added, “Rumour has it she’s been hanging out with our mutual ex Danny Cipriani. Knowing him, I guess she’s probably been doing a bit of comfort eating.” Kelly slammed the comments as “unladylike” and said she felt let down by a woman airing “that sort of thing publicly about another woman”. But at one point Kelly even thanked Katie.

She said on Celebrity Juice, “I owe her a lot actually. She was the one who warned me about Cappuccino [Danny Cipriani] and his cheating ways. So that’s it, Katie and me are officially over it and I don’t hold a grudge. If it wasn’t for her I’d still be dealing with Danny. So thank you, Katie.”

Kelly plans to use her time on I’m A Celeb to change people’s perception of her. The source says, “There has been animosity between Kelly and Katie, but Kelly won’t concern herself with anything she might say about her while in the jungle.

“Kelly is a home girl, she loves food, she loves cooking, she loves the outdoors and wants to show that side of her. Kelly would love to see what this does for her career so she’s going to push through missing Jeremy and do this for herself.”

Farrell savours debut after career ‘lifeline’

Tom Farrell was close to shutting the door on a potential Ireland career.

With his seven-year Connacht spell coming to an end at the end of the 2023-24 season, the 32-year-old centre was close to moving abroad before Munster gave him what he now calls a career “lifeline”.

Having opted to stay at home, he flourished at the two-time European champions, his all-action displays thrusting him into the Test conversation.

Overlooked in the summer, he was not initially selected by Andy Farrell – they are not related – for the autumn Tests, only to be called up before the All Blacks game last weekend.

On Saturday, six years on from first earning a call-up for the 2019 Six Nations, he finally made his bow in Ireland’s 41-10 win over Japan, playing all 80 minutes.

“Massive, massive amount of pride to be honest,” he said, summing up his first run out in green.

“Particularly during the anthems, I was trying to catch eyes with some of my family.

‘I wasn’t ready in 2019’

Farrell scored 10 tries in 25 games for Munster last season, enough to earn him the province’s Player of the Year award, and impressed in last month’s United Rugby Championship win over Leinster at Croke Park.

“I was very close to going abroad and then this opportunity arose and then a couple of injuries and a few different situations happened at Munster where I got on a bit of a roll of games,” added the Dubliner, who signed a new Munster deal last month.

“I managed to pick up a good bit of form and my game went from strength to strength last year.

“Luckily, this year again, I managed to get in for rounds two and three of the league, just before the Ireland squad was selected, and that probably worked in my favour as well.”

Farrell missed out on making his debut under Joe Schmidt six years ago, but having established himself as a midfield option for Farrell, he is determined to make the most of his opportunity.

“The last time I was in camp was 2019, and I probably let the opportunity pass me by a bit,” he admitted.

“I probably wasn’t ready for the intensity and demands of international rugby and probably let the opportunity slip by.

Amanda Seyfried’s under-£100 waterproof boots ‘stop dirt and water getting on your socks’

If you’re looking for a pair of waterproof, warm and practical boots for winter, then Amanda Seyfried has found the perfect pair for under £100 that she wears every day on her farm

With the winter approaching, it’s inevitable that we’ll have to endure at least some time outdoors in the cold and wet weather, which makes a good pair of boots absolutely essential. If you’re after a pair that will keep your feet warm and dry no matter the weather, then Muck Boots are the perfect pick.

The hard-wearing waterproof wellies even come with a celebrity endorsement, as Amanda Seyfried recently revealed that her RHS Muckster II Short Boots are part of her everyday uniform whilst at home on her farm. In a recent interview with TODAY.com , Amanda said she loves that dirt and water don’t “get into your socks” whilst wearing them, even while carrying buckets of water, and that her “caretaker wears them without fail on the farm.”

The RHS Muckster II Short Boots were one of Amanda’s top choices when asked about her go-to off duty uniform at home, so you know these sturdy boots will stand up to every weather condition. Priced at £99, the boots come in four different colours and are 100% waterproof, with a fully lined 4mm neoprene leg shaft for added comfort.

They also have a breathable air mesh lining, comfortable topline midsole and an outsole that’s been designed for light duty use on firm surfaces. As well as being a firm favourite of Amanda’s, the RHS Muckster II Short Boots are also the only gardening footwear endorsed by the Royal Horticultural Society, so you’ve got two stamps of approval.

Ideal for slipping on and off in the mud or wearing during a rainy dog walk, the boots can be worn rolled up for a longer leg shaft, or rolled down for more of an ankle boot style. The rubber outsole is also great for offering extra grip in the mud, but sheds dirt quickly so you don’t end up trailing it all over.

Alternatively, Hunter’s Downpour Short Boots in Khaki are a great option for slipping on and off with ease, and are currently on sale at Schuh down from £95 to £74.99. You could also pick up Barbour’s Mowbray Mid Welly for £80 at ASOS, which feature fabric check trims that can be adjusted with a toggle to keep the cold and rain out.

TOWIE’s Lauren Goodger’s ‘real reason’ for taking eye-opening celibacy vow

EXCLUSIVE: Lauren Goodger recently hinted she’s sworn off sex after a string of failed romances, and no longer has time for casual flings and instead wants something more meaningful

Lauren Goodger’s celibacy journey has been praised by pals who say she is right to “take her time” before embarking on her next relationship.

Last week, the TOWIE star hinted that she’s sworn off sex after a string of failed romances, and no longer has time for casual flings and instead wants something more meaningful.

Taking to Instagram, Lauren shared a post about a man discussing why women stay celibate, which read, “The longer a woman stays celibate, the idea of someone touching her who doesn’t meet her mental, physical, and spiritual wants and needs will literally make her feel sick.”

It went on, “She’s no longer willing to settle for meaningless exchanges or relationships that don’t serve and nourish her soul.” Now, a source close to Lauren has told new her pals are relieved she’s taking a stand, after years of heartache.

“She’s trying to meet the right person because she’s had such a traumatic, turbulent love life in the past,” says our source. “She deserves someone good, but she usually rushes in and goes for the bad boys.

“So, this time, she’s really going to take her time and she wants to find the right one. She’s getting older and she wants to be settled. I think she’s being sensible for once.”

Lauren, 39, has previously confessed to enjoying periods of celibacy. In 2019, she famously posted, “Can’t believe I didn’t have sex for 2 years”, but quickly deleted it. Hinting why she’s no longer a fan of meaningless flings, she’s previously said, “I’m a very sexual person, but I don’t want to be intimate with someone unless I’m in a relationship. I want to settle down and have the fairy tale.”

“She became celibate because she was making bad decisions with the worst sort of men,” adds our source, regarding Lauren’s decision to wait for Mr Right. “She felt every time she went to bed with one of them, it wouldn’t work out.

“She’s had a lot of therapy and they said, ‘Don’t rush in.’ She always seems to rush in, so this is her way of trying to find the right guy, because she just jumps into bed with them. Then, the next thing, she’s fallen for them, and it’s not worked out, and she just gets hurt.”

Recently, fans were concerned Lauren had rekindled her relationship with ex Charles Drury – father to her daughter Larose, four, and Lorena, who tragically died shortly after her birth in 2022. Over the summer, the pair were said to have enjoyed a “double date” with Lauren’s TOWIE pal Junaid Ahmed and his boyfriend Joe Blackman.

While Lauren has lurched from one ill-fated relationship to another, she now appears to have gained some clarity. But our source says her troubles stem from never fully recovering from her very public break-up with fellow TOWIE star Mark Wright 13 years ago.

“She’s always loved Mark, she will always love Mark – and she feels Mark will always love her,” says our source. “They were good together when they were together. I think it’s had a big, deep effect on her. She’s had a tough time, she’s had a lot of grief.”

Earlier this year Lauren confessed she has struggled to find another man who measures up to her first love, who’s now happily married to Brassic actress Michelle Keegan, who he shares eight-month-old daughter Palma with.

Speaking last year on Married At First Sight UK expert Paul Brunson’s podcast, We Need To Talk, Lauren said, “He was the love of my life. We wouldn’t have stayed together for that long if he didn’t have this mutual feeling for me. I never ever thought I was going to love anyone else. I was with him for 12 years on and off.”

Lauren and Mark, 38, were the ITV reality show’s original golden couple, getting engaged on screen in March 2011. But their relationship was dogged by cheating scandals, with Mark having flings with co-stars Sam Faiers and Lucy Mecklenburgh, and the pair separated the following year.

After Mark found love with Michelle, also 38, in late 2012, Lauren embarked on an ill-fated three-year relationship with Jake McLean, who was killed in a car accident in 2022. And after dating jailbird Joey Morrison for two years, in 2020 she fell for builder Charles, who had previously dated her former pal, Katie Price.

But that also ended on a sour note. After briefly splitting in 2021, they finally called time on their relationship the following summer. In August 2022, Drury was accused of assaulting Lauren on the day of their daughter’s funeral, but the case was dropped after she withdrew her support for the prosecution.

For now, Lauren’s pals feel staying single would give her time to heal and prepare for when she finally meets someone special. “She’s had a lot of bad boys in her life and she needs to work on herself,” says our source. “She needs to work on her own self-esteem.”

Article continues below

After everything she has endured, it’s good to see Lauren finally putting herself first.
